SUN 18:00 Words and Music (m0022sm6)
German Romanticism
Beethoven, Schumann, Wagner, Caspar David Friedrich's art, the writing of Goethe, ETA Hoffmann, Novalis and Dorothea Schlegel feature in an episode celebrating German Romanticism.
The linking of art, philosophy, science, music and literature was crucial in the development German Romanticism. On September 5th 1774, the painter Caspar David Friedrich was born. His images often featured Gothic ruins, silhouetted figures on rocks, dramatic mountain landscapes, the light of night skies and morning mists. His works became an emblem of German Romanticism. In today's Words and Music we'll hear Johanna Schopenhauer describing one of his paintings of the Baltic Sea, part of Goethe's influential novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and an excerpt from Penelope Fitzgerald's novel The Blue Flower about the poet Novalis. Composers like Robert Schumann, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Strauss typify this era, with recurring themes of returning to nature, exploring the supernatural and contentment in solitude. There are also pieces inspired by these themes such as My Neighbour Totoro by Joe Hisaishi, Mr Sandman by the 1950s vocal group The Chordettes and a string arrangement of Duke Ellington's Solitude.
Our readers are Emily Pithon and Nuhazet Diaz Cano
We feature readings suggestions and some translations from Dr Seán Williams, who teaches Germanic languages and culture at the University of Sheffield and is a BBC/AHRC New Generation Thinker on the scheme which showcases the research of early career academics. On BBC Sounds you can find Seán sharing information with Andrew McGregor about tourism in the Alps in the interval for the Proms concert 27 (tx August 9th) featuring Strauss's Alpine Symphony, which you can also hear in this edition of Words and Music.

Schoenberg in the USA
Marin Alsop explores the impact of Arnold Schoenberg's move to the United States in 1933 both on his own music and that of his new homeland. She traces Schoenberg's arrival and early days in New York, her own hometown, and his subsequent move to Los Angeles where he joined an illustrious community of emigres including Thomas Mann, Igor Stravinsky and Alma Mahler. Schoenberg famously enjoyed playing tennis with Charlie Chaplin and George Gershwin, and he made an indelible mark on the Hollywood film industry, which was in its golden era at the time.
On the surface, Schoenberg enjoyed living in the USA, but what happened to his relationship with the Old World, and especially the music of the Austro-Germanic tradition, after he emigrated, and how did his reconversion to Judaism influence his life and work in the USA?
Marin Alsop talks to Schoenberg's youngest son, Larry Schoenberg, who still lives in Los Angeles, and both the pianist Mitsuko Uchida and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who are closely associated with Schoenberg's Piano Concerto and Violin Concerto respectively. She also talks to the composer Tod Machover, who has been fascinated by Schoenberg since an early age and wrote an opera entitled 'Schoenberg in Hollywood', and the American writer Alex Ross. Plus the Schoenberg experts Sabine Feisst, author of 'Schoenberg's New World', Leon Botstein, also a conductor, and Therese Muxeneder, of the Arnold Schönberg Center in Vienna.
The programme also includes voice recordings of Arnold Schoenberg, used by kind permission of the Arnold Schönberg Center, and archive sounds of New York in 1934 from the Moving Image Research Collections at the University of South Carolina.

Churchill versus Reith
Churchill versus Reith by Mike Harris
It’s 1926: the General Strike. Churchill wants to commandeer the infant BBC to crush what he considers to be a Bolshevik-inspired uprising. The BBC’s founder, John Reith, is determined to preserve its independence. Churchill is an ambitious, volatile, bon vivant aristocrat. Reith is an ascetic, deeply religious, middle-class Scot. Churchill thinks Reith’s desire for political neutrality is ‘defeatist,’ even traitorous. Reith regards Churchill as a dangerous extremist. Both are egotistical geniuses with a powerful sense of their own destinies. What is at stake is the future independence of British broadcasting.

Sitar player Jasdeep Singh Degun is both a custodian of the instrument’s long history and tradition and a determined innovator whose solo and collaborative work seeks out new spaces for the sitar to inhabit. Elizabeth Alker welcomes him to the Unclassified Listening Chair where he’ll select a piece of music that has the capacity to take him elsewhere.
Elsewhere in the show, Elizabeth will, as ever, present a selection of fresh music from genre-defying artists whose work plays with orchestral textures and classical form as well as the latest from a new generation of contemporary composers whose output is infused with the spirit of rock, pop and electronica.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934)
Early Horrors
We often think of composers as solitary geniuses, scribbling away at their masterpieces, working alone. But this isn’t always the case. Gustav Holst, most famous for composing The Planets, struggled all his life with neuritis, a condition that made his arms feel like “jelly overcharged with electricity.” It was frequently impossible for him to play or even write, so, to bring his vision of our solar system to life, he needed help. This week, Donald Macleod charts Holst’s interplanetary expedition and discovers the unsung heroes who placed him amongst the stars.
In this programme, Donald explores Holst’s first forays into music, composing in his childhood bedroom and later a tiny bedsit, without the aid of the piano.

Five Kinds of Amadeus
16/09/2024
Geoffrey Colman speaks to poet Patrick Mackie about the impact that the film Amadeus had on its release in September 1984. He discovers how the film became a watershed for classical music and why the idea of "the right thing at just the right time" powerfully matches the life and impact of the composer himself in the late eighteenth century. Patrick reveals how Mozart himself seized the opportunities offered by a modernising world to launch his own musical genius.

Gustav Holst (1874-1934)
The Mystic
We often think of composers as solitary geniuses, scribbling away at their masterpieces, working alone. But this isn’t always the case. Gustav Holst, most famous for composing The Planets, struggled all his life with neuritis, a condition that made his arms feel like “jelly overcharged with electricity.” It was frequently impossible for him to play or even write, so, to bring his vision of our solar system to life, he needed help. This week, Donald Macleod charts Holst’s interplanetary expedition and discovers the unsung heroes who placed him amongst the stars.
In this programme, Donald explores Holst’s life as a teacher, his discovery of astrology and the route into mysticism which led him to compose The Planets.

Andrew McGregor with pianist Lucy Parham introduce performances from the semi-final stage of one of the most prestigious of all music competitions - The Leeds - held this week at the Great Hall, Leeds University. Attracting some of finest young pianists from across the globe the competition has now whittled the competitors down to just ten, each of whom is hoping to make it through to the final five for the concerto finals which culminate tomorrow evening. In the semi-final stage each pianist will present a varied programme of music which includes classic works from the pianist's repertory, contemporary music, plus chamber music for which they join forces with members of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective.

Five Kinds of Amadeus
20/09/2024
Geoffrey Colman speaks to Vanessa-Mae, Jane Glover, Mark Anthony Turnage, Simon Callow and poet Patrick Mackie for their powerful and revealing reactions to Peter Shaffer's Amadeus, and their particular relationship with Mozart and his music.
Across five episodes, each guest offers their own very personal connection to Mozart, with views on the film that became a watershed for classical music when it was released forty years ago in September 1984.

Cosmic Junction - A New Planets Suite with NikNak and Gibrana Cervantes in session
Verity Sharp presents a cosmic Late Junction collaboration session between the innovative violinist and composer Gibrana Cervantes and eclectic and award-winning turntablist NikNak. The two artists meet each other here for the first time, to join in with Radio 3’s Gustav Holst 150th birthday celebrations by improvising a set of pieces inspired by the British composer’s famous orchestral suite, The Planets.
Gibrana Cervantes is a violinist who has a gift for combining noise and melody in the creation of emotive, contemplative compositions, pulling from her background both as a classically-trained musician alongside her roots in Mexico’s metal scene. A notoriously powerful live performer and improviser, her most recent album Vórtex Submarino dexterously combines manipulated violin, drone and field recordings. She is a member of the metal band Vyctoria and Mexico City-based experimental collective Amor Muere.
NikNak is a Leeds-based Londoner and an award-winning turntablist and multidisciplinary sound artist. Since releasing her debut album Bashi in 2018 on Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Records, she’s become known for her ability to use turntable scratching, processing and reversing to create intensely cinematic soundscapes through an imaginative fusion of jazz, jungle, trip-hop and experimental sound worlds. Inspired by Black spirituality, her most recent album Ireti delves into Afrofuturism.
Elsewhere in the show, sound sculptor Klara Lewis offers up a mutant acid techno tribute to her friend, the composer and former Editions Mego label boss Peter Rehberg; plus there are percussive sounds made from canoes and fishing gear by N’golá-speaking anglers from São Tomé and Príncipe; and an expansive deconstruction of an Anatolian folk song from Istanbul-born, Berlin-based sound artist Başak Günak.
