In his new show for Saturday lunchtimes, Jools shares his lifelong passion for classical music. With fascinating guests each week who bring their own favourite music and occasionally perform live in the studio.
Today, Jools chooses recordings by some of the artists and composers featured at this year's Proms, including Steven Osborne playing Messiaen, Isata Kanneh-Mason playing Clara Schumann and Andras Schiff playing Bach. We'll also hear about some of the important moments in Proms history such as the outbreak of war in 1939, Martha Argerich's Proms debut in 1966 and the premiere of Malcolm Arnold's Concerto for 2 Pianos (3 hands) in 1969, written for Cyril Smith and Phyllis Sellick. Plus Jools shares his own memories of playing at the Proms in 2017 in a celebration of Stax Records.

Paul Conroy
Clive Myrie is in conversation with news correspondents about the music they’ve heard whilst reporting from the front line. With his own extensive experience of covering wars and conflicts, and his personal love of opera and jazz, Clive and Paul Conroy share stories to reveal something of the power and significance of music when working in extreme conflict situations.
Paul is an award-winning photojournalist who’s worked extensively in combat zones such as the Balkans, the Middle East, and Libya. He worked alongside Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin. His many musical memories whilst working include hearing Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis whilst filming the Kosovo border exodus. Having Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre in his head whilst smuggling himself from Budapest into Belgrade under a bus when NATO were bombing Serbia. He listened to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherezade on a loop during the Iraq invasion. And during an illegal nighttime border crossing with Marie Colvin and the Free Syrian Army, he remembers having Grieg’s In The Hall Of The Mountain King from Peer Gynt Suite rattling through his brain as they tiptoed through land mines.

Edward Seckerson chooses his favourite recording of Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No 5 in D minor.
With the 1926 premiere of his brilliant first symphony, the career of 19-year-old Shostakovich could hardly have begun better. Ten years later, however, Shostakovich's prospects seemed bleak indeed after Pravda, the official newspaper of Stalin's Communist Party, had savagely denounced his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. His confidence battered, Shostakovich withdrew his fourth symphony, his most adventurous orchestral score to date, immediately before its premiere. His next symphony was much more conservative and it did the trick when a reviewer pronounced it 'a Soviet artist’s reply to just criticism' and it had huge public success, both in the Soviet Union and the West.
With its conventional symphonic structure, memorable tunes and triumphant-seeming finale the fifth symphony is still one of Shostakovich's most popular works. But with the benefit of hindsight and testimonies of varying reliability, no effort has been spared to scour it for traces of ambiguity, subversion and anti-Soviet revolt.

Jess Gillam's guest this week is pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, the senior sibling in the prodigiously talented Kanneh-Mason family. Isata has a busy summer ahead, playing Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto at the first night of the BBC Proms, and releasing a new album of music by another set of famous siblings: Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.
Isata brings along some of her favourite tracks, including Leonard Bernstein, Philip Glass and Bob Marley. Jess has a vintage recording of Tchaikovsky's piano music, and a Nina Simone take on a Rodgers & Hart classic.
Plus there's more of the best music, new and old, to pave the way for Saturday evening.

A jaded old 'philosopher' bets his two younger friends that, within 24 hours, their respective lovers will be unfaithful to them. The two men set out to prove him wrong but what do you know...?
The title of Mozart's comedy, Così fan tutte – Women are all like that (where 'that' means being unfaithful) – is a bit of a spoiler. But nothing can spoil an evening in the company of some of Mozart's greatest music where orchestra and voices fuse in a beguiling succession of solo numbers and ensembles to create subtle psychological characterisation and an unsettling, ambiguous tension between comic and serious.
Recorded earlier this month at the Royal Opera House, and introduced by Tom Service in conversation with Mary Ann Smart.

Clio Barnard
The director Clio Barnard won prizes and critical acclaim for her first feature film The Arbor: it blended fact and fiction to depict the short, troubled life of the brilliant Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar.
Since then she’s taken on a wide range of British stories. She directed Claire Danes and Tom Hiddleston in The Essex Serpent, a six part adaptation of the best-selling book by Sarah Perry.
She returned to Bradford for Ali and Ava, a love story which won a BAFTA nomination for outstanding British film, and for The Selfish Giant, the tale of two children trying to make money from selling scrap metal.
Music often plays an important part in her films, and her choices include Alice Coltrane, Biber and Philip Glass.

Metastasio's Olimpiade
As excitement builds for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympics Games, Mark Seow explores sport in Baroque opera. L'Olimpiade is a dramma per musica by Metastasio, which was first set to music by Antonio Caldara in 1733. The plot is set at the competitions in ancient Greece, and the opera has virtuosic vocal acrobatics to match. Caldara’s premiere brought an onslaught of competition: Metastasio’s text was then set by many others composers throughout the 18th century – including Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Sarti and Galuppi. Swimming
Yeats brings us fish; Emily Dickinson mermaids:, Marriott Edgar Channel swimming; and Lewis Carroll a pool of tears. We visit the Ladies pond at Hampstead in a poem by Linda Gregerson and are transported to the East Coast of America in John Cheever's short story The Swimmer, brought alive by Marvin Hamlisch’s haunting score from the film version. But swimming can also bring perils and we look back to Stevie Smith’s Not Waving, but Drowning and observe ponds and lakes as places where bodies are on display in EM Forster's Room With a View and Alan Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty. Music of the Vikings
Viking music received some challenging reviews. Andalucian Arab traveller, Ibrahin ibn Yaqub was an enthusiastic fan of Viking food, drink and hospitality but he shared the opinion of many southern visitors to the Norselands; “There is no uglier song than the groans that come out of their throats. It is like the baying of hounds, only worse.”
Norse scholar, Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough, is determined to recover their musical reputation. She doesn’t buy ibn Yaqub’s cultural dismissiveness. There’s no doubt that the Vikings prized music highly - it’s a regular theme of the great sagas. So what did it actually sound like?
So begins an epic quest, in which Eleanor is joined by the Norwegian composer, musician and instrument maker Einar Selvik. Einar is a former Black Metal star who now fronts the influential Nordic folk project, Wardruna. He has put Old Norse poems to orchestral scores with the Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester and created soundscapes from Viking sites and landscapes.
Eleanor conjures up the scene in a huge reconstructed Viking hall at Lejre in Denmark. Poets and musicians are gathered together to celebrate the international raiding adventures of the local Jarls. We have the poetry- handed down orally to the saga writers- and we know that music accompanied the poems. But what was the soundtrack?
Archaeologists, instrument makers, composers and singers share their insights with Eleanor before she returns to Einar's studio on the south-east coast of Norway. Here they consider the evidence, play ancient instruments and use contemporary music technology until they produce an authentic shiver up the spine of musician and historian. Is this the sound that the Jarls of the Viking world would have feasted to?
Eleanor is also assisted on her quest by composer Edmund Hunt of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, archaeologist Søren Michael Sindbæk of Aarhus University, musician and instrument maker Jens Bonde of the Ribe Viking Museum, Charlotte Frantzdatter of Sanglandet Lejre, Michael Lerche Nielsen, Anne Mette Hansen and Natasha Fazlic of the Arnamagnaean Manuscript Collection and Sara Heil Jensen of the Viking Museum, Fyrkat.

Love and Information is a vivid mosaic of contemporary consciousness. In a series of fascinating vignettes, characters withhold, extract and disclose information; they believe things that aren’t true and disbelieve things that are true; they interpret and misinterpret; they go to great lengths to discover pointless things; they regret a lack of connectivity. The scenes consider the relationship between knowledge and faith and between feeling and knowing; how memory works and whether it's always better to know.
A company of ten stage and screen actors play over a hundred characters in over fifty scenes. They are: Michelle Austin, Josh Barrow, Rosie Cavaliero, Kathleen Cranham, Emma Fielding, Karl Johnson, Joel MacCormack, Sam Swann, Danielle Vitalis and Alan Williams. The glorious voice of Irish mezzo Niamh O'Sullivan is heard in a dramatic song by the composer-conductor, Hamilton Harty and the brilliant Leonkoro Quartet plays Schumann in a performance recorded earlier this year at Wigmore Hall. Forced to return home early from a concert tour with his wife, Clara, the thirty-one-year-old Robert found himself alone in Leipzig. Home alone Schumann was visited by what he called “quartet-ish thoughts” and used this time to study the quartets of Mozart and Beethoven. The quartet in A is the happy outcome.

Donald Macleod asks how Robert and Clara Schumann reconciled their domestic creative tension.
The 1840s was the decade when Robert and Clara Schumann’s married life began, and was the decade in which he established himself as a significant composer.
Schumann’s marriage to Clara gave him the stability he needed, and brought out the best in him as a composer. But the major question was whether the creative tension between the couple could ever be reconciled. Clara's greater fame, her desire to practice at home, and to go away and perform concerts was firmly set against Robert's desire for her to be a wife and home-maker, to leave her public behind.
Today, Donald Macleod looks at how the Schumanns strove to reconcile these seemingly opposing outlooks.

Cheltenham Festival 2024: Sean Shibe, the Dunedin Consort and Alim Beisembayev
A Cheltenham Festival double-bill from New Generation Artists past and present.
The first half sees Kazakh pianist Alim Beisembayev present a programme of romantic gems from across the repertoire, with Debussy’s evocative Images, a Romance by Clara Schumann and Chopin’s much-loved kaleidoscopic Etudes.
After the interval, guitarist Sean Shibe and the Dunedin Consort take us on a fluid, folk-inspired journey tracing the roots of the Scottish-Canadian diaspora from the renaissance to the 21st century. Beginning with Scottish lute manuscripts, they trace a line via Purcell’s music for viols, through to living composers James Macmillan and Linda Catlin Smith. It culminates in a brand new guitar concerto from Canadian composer Cassandra Miller, “Chanter” – which draws on an old Highland air for bagpipes.

Dawn
The sounds of wild Poland with nature recordist Izabela Dłuzyk is a long, immersive listen to the sounds of the wetlands and forests of the eastern Polish borderlands. Izabela has been recording since childhood, teaching herself the sounds of species by ear alone, as she was born without sight. She was given her tape recorder at the age of ten and went on long recording walks with her grandfather in her home town of Gdansk on the Baltic coast, capturing the voices of birds, frogs and anything they came across. These early adventures set her on the path to a life-long passion for recording. 'Nature recording is an adventure,' she says 'a way of delving into another world.' In this episode we're listening to the sounds of dawn in the Biebrza marshes and the Bialowieza primeval forest that's half in Poland and half in Belarus.

‘Round Midnight is presented by award-winning saxophonist Soweto Kinch. This weekday late-night show celebrates the thriving UK jazz scene and spotlights the best new music alongside incredible acts from past decades.
British trumpeter, composer and former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Laura Jurd is Soweto's guest this week. She is performing at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival this week, as well as curating a series of concerts at the festival.
Laura will be taking part in Flowers - a part of the show which gives artists the chance to celebrate fellow musicians - contemporaries, unsung heroes and living legends. Her first bouquet goes to Shetland-born, Glasgow based artist, Norman Willmore.
Plus, there's music from Julian Lage, Oreglo and a live session track from clarinettist Adrian Cox to preview his Maida Vale session on Jamie Cullum's Radio 2 show tomorrow evening.

Harmonies
Adventures in wild Poland with nature recordist Izabela Dłuzyk. This is a long, deep listen to the sounds of the wetlands and forests of the eastern Polish borderlands. Izabela has been recording since childhood, capturing the voices of birds, animals and plant life. She has very precise listening skills and is able to identify the sound of a specific creature in a large, complex chorus. But she also enjoys the harmonies of the ecosystem, in which flocks of the same or different species harmonise together. 'Nature recording is an adventure,' she says, 'a way of delving into another world.' In this episode we're listening to some of the natural harmonies she’s recorded on her adventures from the amazing sound of running swans to the unearthly vibrations that snipe make with their tail feathers.

Ahead of Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic's two visits to the BBC Proms in September, a chance to hear a spectacular concert recorded earlier this year at the orchestra's home, the Berlin Philhamonie.
Lisa Batiashvili, is the soloist in Karol Szymanowski’s intensely passionate, richly colourful and exotic-sounding Violin Concerto No 1, a secret love letter to the player it was originally conceived for, fellow Pole Paul Kochanski.
There are few secrets in Richard Strauss's Symphonia domestica. Strauss was already a major international figure 1902 when, after a triumphant trip to London, he took a little holiday on the Isle of Wight, where the initial ideas for the Symphonia domestica took root. The music vividly depicts Strauss's family life: a screaming baby, a nocturnal love scene, marital strife and a final and jolly reconciliation (the day after he arrived on the Isle of Wight, Strauss received a telegram from his wife asking for a divorce). The sounds of wild Poland with nature recordist Izabela Dłuzyk is a long, immersive listen to the sounds of the wetlands and forests of the eastern Polish borderlands. Izabela has acute hearing and has taught herself to listen closely not just to individual species but to the natural world as a whole landscape, with all its complex interactions and relationships. One of Izabela's favourite birds is the Thrush Nightingale. It breeds all over Eastern Europe, especially in wetlands, but is hardly ever seen in the UK.

The 1840s was the decade when Robert and Clara Schumann’s married life began, and was the decade in which he established himself as a significant composer.
Today, Donald Macleod looks at a period of civil unrest on the streets of Dresden. Revolutionaries were rounding up able-bodied men to bolster their forces. Richard Wagner was already manning the barricades. Would Schumann be forced to serve too? We look at how Schumann coped with this upheaval. And we see the strength he took from forming his own choir.

In this episode we're in the Bialowieza primeval forest that's half in the far east of Poland and half in Belarus.
The forest is one of the last stretches of the ancient forest that once spread across the whole European plain. Some of the oak trees there are many centuries old. Numberless generations of birds and animals have lived up in their branches and below in their undergrowth. In this episode we’ll hear the sounds of the trees themselves.

Izabela has been recording since childhood, teaching herself the sounds of species by ear alone. She believes that anyone can become a recordist - there's no need for fancy equipment, all you need is a phone and the willingness to listen. Izabela was born without sight, but that hasn't held her back. Darkness presents no problems for her and in this episode she's recording at night in the ancient woodland in the eastern borderlands of Poland.

International Moon Day is upon us! Join Verity Sharp for a moonwalk through sound, giving a nod to music that feels the pull of the lunar. We’ll drop in on a celestial nighttime vision, experienced from the shadows of the forest, courtesy of David Lynch; and in southern Albania, a shepherd, a police commissioner and a barber come together as Grupi Lab to sing stirring polyphonic folk songs by moonlight. Yoshikazu Iwamoto, meanwhile, offers a Buddhist anthem, “Shingetsu (Moon of the Heart)”, played on a Shakuhachi bamboo flute.
Elsewhere, composer Simon Fisher Turner’s new release is an intricate exploration of sound, reflecting on the restorative nature of “singing of ourselves and to ourselves”; and we’ve extreme and immersive noise from Pedro Vian and Merzbow’s new album, Inside Richard Serra Sculptures.
