Lyse Doucet
Clive Myrie is in conversation with news correspondents about the music they’ve heard whilst reporting from the front line. With his own extensive experience of covering wars, and his personal love of opera and jazz, Clive and Lyse Doucet share stories to reveal something of the power and significance of music when working in extreme conflict situations.
As BBC Presenter and Chief International Correspondent, Lyse’s working life is full of encounters with music and musicians. When she was starting out as a freelance journalist in conflict situations in Chad, Liberia, Burkina Faso, she fell in love with the playing of Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung and Mendelsohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor was a constant companion during her travels. She heard Domenico Scarlatti’s Sonata in B Minor K27 at the height of the Syrian war in the Damascus Opera House. It felt like a mournful elegy to a lost land. In 2021 she attended the last rehearsal by the Afghan National Orchestra before the Taliban swept into Kabul and destroyed the Conservatoire. They were rehearsing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the Ode to Joy. She still can’t believe that everything then fell apart so quickly.

William Mival chooses his favourite recording of Korngold's Violin Concerto.
Premiered by Jascha Heifetz in 1947, Korngold's Violin Concerto was the first concert hall piece he had composed since his self-exile to America, fleeing Nazi persecution in his native Austria. The concerto's thematic material borrows music from the many film scores Korngold wrote during his time in America, and the work brims with romance, energy and dazzling tunes, now firmly established as one of Korngold's most popular pieces.

The Art of Video Games
Video games have come a long way from the pixels of Pong and Pac-Man. From games based on medieval manuscripts like Inkulinati and Pentiment, to hand-drawn wonders such as Cuphead, games have become works of art in themselves. Some even ask the player to create that art. Elle Osili-Wood dusts off her easel and to illustrate the best of them.
Elle's guest on the programme has been involved with a number of such titles - "Chicory: A Colorful Tale" and "Ori and the Will o'the Wisps" - she is the go-to woodwind soloists for game and film composers alike: Kristin Naigus.

Jess Gillam with... Anna Clyne
Jess's guest this week is the GRAMMY-nominated composer Anna Clyne, who the New York Times has described as a 'composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods'. Anna's work has been performed at The Barbican, Carnegie Hall, and the Last Night of The Proms, and she has collaborated with artists such as Pekka Kuusisto and Yo-Yo Ma, as well as San Francisco Ballet and Royal Ballet. Her new piece 'The Gorgeous Nothings', which sets poetry by Emily Dickinson, will be premiered by BBC Philharmonic and The Swingles at Prom 15 on 30th July 2024. She and Jess discuss physicality in music, as well as the power of simplicity.
Anna and Jess load up the This Classical Life jukebox with the music they love, including an Incan-influenced track from Simon & Garfunkel, music for Italian clowns from Leoncavallo, and a song of resilience and hope from American roots musician Rhiannon Giddens.
Plus Jess plays some of the best music to take you into Saturday evening.

Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea
Hannah French presents Monteverdi's Coronation of Poppea from the Liceu Theatre, Barcelona, starring Julie Fuchs, Magdalena Kožená and David Hansen and conducted by Jordi Savall.
Monteverdi's last opera is a masterpiece of political and sexual intrigue, as the seductive Roman aristocrat Poppea twists the Emperor Nero (Nerone) around her little finger. The bit of him she's really interested in is his crown, and in her single-minded determination to fulfil the opera's title she tramples a stream of victims underfoot - including her previous lover Ottone, the wisest of Nero's courtiers, the philosopher Seneca, and finally Nero's empress, Ottavia.

Rolf Hind's Blue to the Throat for Elaine Mitchener
Tom Service introduces some of the latest sounds from the world of new music, including the premiere of Rolf Hind's Blue to the Throat.
Rolf Hind’s new work Blue to the Throat is a sequence of eight movements for the singer Elaine Mitchener who performed it at Wigmore Hall with Apartment House. Each of the movements takes a different view from philosophy, poetry and nature of the idea of the throat from Catholic blessings of the throat, to Sanskrit and the natural world and an eloquent new poem by Dante Micheaux. Also in the programme, Aftermath of the Overflow, the third of Giulia Monducci's Avenue works for large ensemble is performed by Klangforum WIen. And, amongst the new releases, is a celebration of the sounds of Greece from Spyros Polychronopoulos and Jannis Anastasakis.

Richard Thompson
Richard Thompson began his career as a guitarist and a songwriter when he was still a teenager – and six decades on, his passion for making and sharing music is as strong as ever.
In the late 1960s he co-founded the pioneering folk-rock band Fairport Convention. In 1969 alone, they released three albums. All featured the voice of Sandy Denny, and one - Liege and Lief - was later acclaimed as the most influential folk album of all time. In the early 1970s, Richard left the band to form a decade-long musical partnership with his then wife Linda.
He’s now spent over 30 years as a solo artist, winning an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, a Lifetime Achievement Award from BBC Radio 2 and countless plaudits for his guitar playing.
Richard's music choices include Beethoven, Purcell, Britten and Manuel de Falla.

Proust
7 volumes, 4,300 pages in one translation, featuring more than 2,000 characters: Proust's A la Recherche du Temps Perdu was first refused by the publisher Gallimard but then, after he paid for it to be published himself and for reviewers to write about it favourably, it became recognised as a literary classic. But the writer had died of pneumonia before he finished his revisions and the final 3 volumes had reached print.
In a series of vignettes featuring each of the five senses, we find ourselves at the salon given by Madame Verdurin, where Swann hears the little musical phrase which fascinates him; we follow the narrator as he views a famous 18th century fountain, before kissing Albertine, who has driven him wild with jealousy. Later, we find him pondering the death of his grandmother, before having the cup of tea with the madeleine cake whose taste triggers in his mind a whole world of memory, presumed lost, but conjured up now without any effort of the will.
The English translation is that by C.K. Scott-Moncrieff, along with passages from a new version of Swann in Love by Lucy Raitz. On the way we hear tributes to Proust from other authors, and a Proustian soundtrack including music by Ravel, Johann Strauss and Schoenberg.

Undine Smith Moore - The Dean of Black Women Composers
Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989) was a composer, teacher, and musical force of nature. Pianist Samantha Ege uncovers how Moore continues to influence students, performers and listeners on a deeply personal level; to help them find strength in anger.
Professor Undine Smith Moore was an educator and composer - but her powerful, experimental work remains much less well known than her European male counterparts from the time. Born in Virginia in 1904, Moore experienced the effects of segregation first hand - as well as her parents' determination to uplift their daughter through education and literature.
In 2022 Samantha Ege performed the world premiere of Undine Smith Moore's composition 'Soweto' (1987). She explores how Moore’s eloquent musical rage at injustice has helped others.

A radiophonic adaptation of the major poetic text - Beowulf - using the different BBC versions broadcast over the years, from the 1940s, including a Welsh language version, song, and a new commission by Patience Agbabi. Seamus Heaney's version pulsates its way through the entire poem interconnecting the many different versions. To celebrate and mark the BBC's strong relationship with poetry throughout its history.
Beowulf is the foundational myth of English literature, a classic text that has been interpreted by writers, poets and radio and film makers over and over again in the BBC's history. In this special remixed version we pull together extracts from the various productions over the years, showing how this text has been variously interpreted in different decades.
It's one of the great universal stories - a hero who fights against the odds, finally arriving at a point where he must meet his destiny.

Donald Macleod introduces us to young Tom and some of the mysteries surrounding his story.
English composer, Thomas Linley the Younger, was destined to become one of the brightest musical stars of eighteenth century. No less a person than Mozart, who was also a personal friend, hailed him as a ‘true genius’. Even so, Linley’s life was troubled. He and his siblings were ruthlessly driven by their ambitious father. He saw his beloved sister become fodder for the celebrity-hungry gossip mongers of the British press and must have wondered if he might be next. He was forced to navigate a dangerous atmosphere of prurience and moral suspicion about the private lives of ‘theatre people’ like himself. A cloud of mystery hovers over Tom’s shocking and early death at the age of just 22. Donald Macleod is joined by Linley’s biographer, Tony Scotland, to shine a light on this charming and often enigmatic composer, alongside music by Tom and his circle.
Today, Donald introduces us to young Tom and also his colourful family, who’ll play a significant role in his many triumphs and struggles to come.

Transfigured Night
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales are joined by conductor Jac van Steen to perform three exceptionally powerful pieces of music. They begin with the world premiere of a BBC commission by Stephen McNeff, The Celestial Stranger. It was inspired by newly rediscovered poetry by Thomas Traherne, and alongside two of his poems, also features poetry by Walt Whitman, Dylan Thomas, and Queen Lydia Kamakaeha Lili’uokalani. The tenor Gavan Ring will join the orchestra to tell the tale of the titular alien who discovers our earth, revelling in its beauty and, eventually, its imperfections. On either side of the interval are two deeply moving tales of love. First is Fauré's Pelléas and Mélisande — music which he wrote for a play which follows the ill-fated lovers of the title to their doom at the hands of Mélisande's husband. Then, after the interval, there is another love triangle in Schoenberg's ravishing Verklärte Nacht or Transfigured Night. That was inspired by a poem in which the third party is never seen, but whose presence is felt, and ends with a transcendent accord between the lovers.

The Early Years
Michael Longley is Northern Ireland's most eminent contemporary poet, described by Seamus Heaney as 'a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders.' He has devoted a lifetime to the art of poetry and has won numerous poetry prizes.
In the first episode of this series of The Essay, he talks about his home town of Belfast and his love of jazz, saying that, 'Good poetry for me combines two things: meaning and melody.' He also loves the classics, which he studied at Trinity College Dublin, where he met his wife, Edna, a distinguished literary critic. He was one of a group of young poets that emerged from Northern Ireland in the 1960s and he describes the mutual support, rivalry and excitement of that time.
He reads his poems Elegy for Fats Waller and an extract from his poem River and Fountain from a new collection, Ash Keys: New Selected Poems (Cape Poetry), published to mark his 85th birthday on 27th July 2024. He also reads Bookshops from his collection Angel Hill and Poem from The Slain Birds.

Donald Macleod follows Tom to Italy, where he’s finally able to escape his father’s watchful eye.
English composer, Thomas Linley The Younger, was destined to become one of the brightest musical stars of eighteenth century. No less a person than Mozart, who was also a personal friend, hailed him as a ‘true genius’. Even so, Linley’s life was troubled. He and his siblings were ruthlessly driven by their ambitious father. He saw his beloved sister become fodder for the celebrity-hungry gossip mongers of the British press and must have wondered if he might be next. He was forced to navigate a dangerous atmosphere of prurience and moral suspicion about the private lives of ‘theatre people’ like himself. A cloud of mystery hovers over Tom’s shocking and early death at the age of just 22. Donald Macleod is joined by Linley’s biographer, Tony Scotland, to shine a light on this charming and often enigmatic composer, alongside music by Tom and his circle.
Today, Donald sees Tom finish his education in Italy, where he encounters a new mentor, disreputable patrons, and a life-long soul mate in the shape of fellow boy-wonder, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The BBC Philharmonic and their Finnish Chief Conductor, John Storgards celebrate the bicentenary of Bruckner's birth with a performance of his life-affirming Fifth Symphony. Sadly he never heard this uncompromisingly optimistic music played by an orchestra.
The programme opens with music by John Storgards's compatriot, Lotta Wennäkoski and was commissioned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius's birth. 'Verdigris' is the layer of greenish haze that characterises mature bronze statues; in this tribute to Sibelius's music she draws inspiration from his tone poem 'En Saga', aspiring she says, to "write new layers of musical history", energised by musical sense of place and his string writing. 'En Saga' completes the programme; the title translates as "fairy tale" but there isn't a story here - Sibelius said he felt the piece created an atmosphere which was a "revelation of his own character" and the music is imbued with a rhythmic propulsion but also a dark melancholy.

Tom returns from Italy to discover his sister has become a celebrity. With Donald Macleod.
English composer, Thomas Linley The Younger, was destined to become one of the brightest musical stars of eighteenth century. No less a person than Mozart, who was also a personal friend, hailed him as a ‘true genius’. Even so, Linley’s life was troubled. He and his siblings were ruthlessly driven by their ambitious father. He saw his beloved sister become fodder for the celebrity-hungry gossip mongers of the British press and must have wondered if he might be next. He was forced to navigate a dangerous atmosphere of prurience and moral suspicion about the private lives of ‘theatre people’ like himself. A cloud of mystery hovers over Tom’s shocking and early death at the age of just 22. Donald Macleod is joined by Linley’s biographer, Tony Scotland, to shine a light on this charming and often enigmatic composer, alongside music by Tom and his circle.
Today, Donald follows the fortunes of Tom’s sister, Elizabeth whose beauty and singing talents had made her famous. But Tom is aghast when her notoriety attracts harassment and advances from unwanted suitors. Elizabeth decides to run away; scandal and violence follows and Tom is left wondering at the destructive power of fame

Scottish Chamber Orchestra: The Lark Ascending
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and conductor Andrew Manze perform a concert of music by Vaughan Williams, celebrating his pastoral inspiration and use of folk songs to create a distinctly British sound and style.
The SCO's leader Stephanie Gonley performs Vaughan Williams's much loved work for solo violin and orchestra, The Lark Ascending. It's a musical depiction of a bird on the wing, its song filling the air inspired by George Meredith's poem of the same name. Young musicians from the SCO String Academy join for Vaughan Williams five movement Concerto Grosso, written initially in 1950 for the Rural Music School strings programme. The concert ends with Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5, a hopeful, spiritual work written during the Second World War with musical themes taken from his opera The Pilgrim’s Progress.

Poems of the Troubles
Michael Longley is Northern Ireland's most eminent contemporary poet, described by Seamus Heaney as 'a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders.' He has devoted a lifetime to the art of poetry and has won numerous poetry prizes.
In 1968, violence erupted in Northern Ireland, the beginning of 30 years of the Troubles. In the third episode of this series of The Essay, he talks about writing poems that remembered some of those who were victims of the violence and his most famous poem, Ceasefire, which looks to Homer's great epic poem The Iliad as it reflects on the cost of peace.
As well as Ceasefire, he reads his poems The Troubles, The Ice-Cream Man, and All of these People from the collection Ash Keys: New Selected Poems (Cape Poetry), published to mark his 85th birthday on 27th July 2024.

Today, Donald sees the Linley family move to London to take residence at the Theatre Royal. Tom is overworked but a greater worry are the friends, colleagues and supporters who he sees attacked, as homophobia and moral panic infects certain quarters of the press. Will they next turn their poison pens on Tom?

Michael Longley is Northern Ireland's most eminent contemporary poet, described by Seamus Heaney as 'a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders.' He has devoted a lifetime to the art of poetry and has won numerous poetry prizes.
His refuge from the city streets of Belfast is in County Mayo, in one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the west of Ireland. He has been writing about its nature and landscape for over 50 years and it has provided endless inspiration for poems. In more recent years he has recognised the threat of climate change and he expresses the hope that younger generations will take greater care of the world.
He reads his poems The Leveret, Remembering Carrigskeewaun, Stonechat and The Comber from his collection Ash Keys: New Selected Poems (Cape Poetry), published to mark his 85th birthday on 27th July 2024, and Merlin from his collection The Slain Birds.

Donald Macleod investigates Tom’s early death and asks if it was really as accidental as it was reported.
English composer, Thomas Linley The Younger, was destined to become one of the brightest musical stars of eighteenth century. No less a person than Mozart, who was also a personal friend, hailed him as a ‘true genius’. Even so, Linley’s life was troubled. He and his siblings were ruthlessly driven by their ambitious father. He saw his beloved sister become fodder for the celebrity-hungry gossip mongers of the British press and must have wondered if he might be next. He was forced to navigate a dangerous atmosphere of prurience and moral suspicion about the private lives of ‘theatre people’ like himself. A cloud of mystery hovers over Tom’s shocking and early death at the age of just 22. Donald Macleod is joined by Linley’s biographer, Tony Scotland, to shine a light on this charming and often enigmatic composer, alongside music by Tom and his circle.
Today, Donald reviews some of the unanswered questions that linger over the circumstances of Tom’s untimely demise – and Tony Scotland reveals the new evidence he’s discovered about what really happened.

Michael Longley's Life of Poetry
Poems of Love and Ageing
Michael Longley is Northern Ireland's most eminent contemporary poet, described by Seamus Heaney as 'a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders.' He has devoted a lifetime to the art of poetry and has won numerous poetry prizes.
In recent years, Michael has been writing more than ever. He is recognised as a very fine love poet and in this episode he reads poems that address the gift of a decades-long love and marriage and the inevitability of ageing. After a lifetime dedicated to poetry, he says, 'I can't imagine that I would be alive now if I hadn't had poetry propelling me forward.'
He reads his poems The Pattern, The Linen Industry and Age from his collection Ash Keys: New Selected Poems (Cape Poetry), published to mark his 85th birthday on 27th July 2024, and Foam from his collection The Slain Birds.

Pollution Opera’s mixtape
Verity Sharp shares a mixtape from intercontinental experimental noise duo Pollution Opera, the new project dreamt (or nightmared) up by Nadah el Shazly and Elvin Brandhi. Nadah is a singer, composer, and producer from Cairo who combines electronic music with contemporary classical and popular historical Egyptian music. Elvin is an artist, vocalist, and avant-garde musician from Bridgend, Wales, a seasoned improviser both as a solo artist and as half of father-daughter duo Yeah You.
Together, Nadah and Elvin aim for Pollution Opera to be an ‘uncompromising futurist depiction of our disfigured, dystopian, and dying reality’, weaving breathless shouts, screams, and screeches, alongside samples, field recordings and electroacoustic fragments. The project was conceived in 2020, during a tandem motorbike ride through Nadah’s hometown of Cairo, the second-loudest city in the world, where they found the extreme noise pollution cathartic, inspiring and existential. They’ve crafted an exclusive mixtape for Late Junction that’s bound to put hairs on your chest.
