The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 13:00 Music Matters (m00202xc)
25 Years of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra

From Strength to Strength

Clemency Burton-Hill charts the West-Eastern Divan Project’s remarkable achievements and developments around the world in recent years.

The Divan Orchestra has had great success over the years with appearances at the BBC Proms, the Salzburg and Lucerne Festival, the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

The Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin was opened in 2016 offering musical training and a grounding in the humanities. This building includes the Pierre Boulez Saal a concert hall specially designed by architect Frank Gehry.

The Barenboim-Said Center for Music in Ramallah was established in 2012, committed to integrating classical music within the Palestinian community and to strengthening public appreciation of the arts and music through concerts and public events.

And Michael Barenboim formed the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble to mark the orchestra’s 20th anniversary in 2019.

The West-Eastern Divan is an orchestra where Arabs and Israeli young musicians play alongside each other. It was the brainchild of Daniel Barenboim – an Argentinian musician born to Russian, Jewish parents. And Edward Said - a Palestinian, American academic and political activist.

Including interviews with Daniel Barenboim, Mariam Said, Michael Barenboim, biographer Elena Cheah, the Divan’s General Manager Tabaré Perlas.

Clemmie spent several summers touring in the violin section of the Divan. In January 2020, she suffered a brain haemorrhage and this is her first radio series since her recovery.

All the orchestral music is performed by the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Barenboim.

Building a Library

Jonathan Cross chooses his favourite recording of Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra.

Richard Strauss's tone poem, Also sprach Zarathustra, was composed in 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical novel Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The initial fanfare, "Sunrise", became well known after its use in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The BBC used the theme in its television coverage of the Apollo space missions. It also became a regular intro to Elvis Presley's concerts in his later years.

3.45 pm
Record of the Week: Andrew’s top pick.

They settle in for a listening party of the music they love, including an epic Bruckner scherzo, joyous Irish folk by Kan, haunting new music by Aleksander Debicz and something from the father of Ugandan pop Elly Wamala.

And, from Birmingham, the Bozzini Quartet plays Michael Walters' I fear (4) my life, a work he says which channels the party-atmosphere-meets-activism of Pride events; it's directly inspired by the statistics for sexual orientation motivated hate crimes in Canada and the UK. In 2004, while filming in Saudi Arabia, Frank and his cameraman Simon Cumbers were ambushed by al-Qaeda gunmen. Simon was killed and Frank was shot six times and left for dead. He survived, but was partially paralysed. He returned to reporting within a year, using a wheelchair.

Mark Seow joins Hannah in the studio to chat through the latest goings-on in the early music world, including some of their favourite recent and forthcoming releases from the likes of The Gesualdo Six and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

Plus Hannah hears from some of the winning groups at this year's REMA Awards, the European Early Music Network's prizes that were awarded at the Stockholm Early Music Festival earlier this month.

Producer: David Fay.

SUN 18:00 Words and Music (m001zvdg)
Portraits of Suffolk

Benjamin Britten founded the Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts in 1948. This year sees the 75th (with one unfortunately cancelled in 2020 because of coronavirus). To mark the occasion, Words and Music takes as its theme the county of Suffolk. The items are all linked to Suffolk and the Festival with music featured in the very first concert, compositions about the county or by musicians associated with it; and prose and poetry, old and new, describe Suffolk life and landscape from writers born or resident there.

Musically the prime mover behind the Festival, Lowestoft-born Benjamin Britten, of course looms large, but there are also other Suffolk composers like the eighteenth century Joseph Gibbs and the contemporary Magnus Fiennes. Plus Michael Tippett, who composed the music for Peter Hall's 1974 film based on the book Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village by Ronald Blythe. Traditional Suffolk folk songs and tunes sit alongside modern pop performers like Ed Sheeran and Nik Kershaw and Brian Eno’s ambient sounds reflect the county of his birth.

The rivers, coast and even Sizewell’s nuclear power station have inspired poets like Stevie Smith, John Betjeman, Blake Morrison and Deryn Rees-Jones while prose writers including Brendan Behan, Esther Freud and Melissa Harrison have explored the lives of the people of Suffolk.

The readings are by Orford’s Miranda Raison and Bury St Edmunds’ Michael Maloney.

Producer: Harry Parker

SUN 19:15 Sunday Feature (m00202z9)
A Most Queer House

For more than 150 years, 9 Lower Mall, Hammersmith, has been a home or a haven for creative homosexuals and bohemians who enriched the cultural life of the eras in which they lived.  Early habitués included the American photographer Alvin Langdon Coburn and the painter Henry Scott Tuke. The secret homosexual society, the Order of Chaeronea, met there and went on to become a worldwide fraternity in the Victorian era, the first LGBTQ+ organisation. Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas visited frequently. Theatre manager George Devine moved into the house in 1953 and created the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre with George Goetschius and Tony Richardson. 9 Lower Mall became a hub for a generation of playwrights and directors.  It was where unknown playwright John Osborne speculatively slipped his script of ‘Look Back in Anger’ through the letterbox.

Clare Barlow, the curator of the Tate Britain ‘Queer British Art’ exhibition; Zorian Clayton, the Prints Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum; artist Jez Dolan; art historian Richard Cork; Professor Sue Healy; architectural historian Alan Powers; dramatist Nicholas Wright and Harriet Devine tell the story of a most queer house.

The presenter is Matt Cook, professor of the history of sexuality at Mansfield College, University of Oxford.

SUN 20:00 Drama on 3 (m00202zc)
Jubilee!

As the dust settles on the American Civil War, a group of young black university students begin an extraordinary journey.

Made In Manchester's 90-minute BBC Radio 3 Drama, Jubilee! tells the story of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a choir peopled entirely from once enslaved young men and women and founded to raise money for their beleaguered university. These young musicians would go on to captivate America and Europe, perform before presidents and royalty and become international celebrities. Uniquely, the choir introduced Spirituals to the world – secret songs once sung on blood-soaked plantations across the South – songs that began the march to freedom.

Written by award-winning writers Garth Bardsley and Ray Shell, and starring major talent including Samuel West, Sophia Nomvete and Simon Callow, Jubilee! is directed by multi-award winning director Andy Jordan and recounts a remarkable, life-affirming story of hope - revealing once again the rich diversity of the African diaspora. In a contemporary world in which the immigrant is vilified and the poor subjugated, Jubilee! celebrates the bravery, talents, resilience and integrity of a group of people who originated from the cruellest of backgrounds.

A Date with Dublin

Bloomsday, the 16th of June, the date upon which that most dazzling of modern novels, James Joyce’s Ulysses, is set. Like the book, the day offers a celebration of that most illustrious and musical of cities, Dublin. Joyce himself was a trained singer, forever bursting into song, and his obsession with music spilled into his book, just as the Bloomsday revellers spill into the Dublin streets. To mark this year’s event, Elizabeth Alker looks across the Irish Sea to find out what Dublin’s best ambient, experimental and neo-classical musicians are up to right now, as they seek out the ineluctable modality of the audible.

MON 16:00 Composer of the Week (m002031m)
Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Family Man

Kate Molleson uncovers Dvořák’s devotion to his nearest and dearest.

Antonín Dvořák was one of the most heartfelt tunesmiths in classical music - a man who not only brought the sound of Czech folklore to the world, but also had an indelible impact on the musical nationhood of America. As a character he was sometimes shy, sometimes melancholy, routinely homesick and deeply passionate. Through the week Kate Molleson explores five windows onto Dvořák’s soul, aspects of life that were really central to his convictions and his music.

Today, we learn about Dvořák’s family - one of the guiding forces in everything he did and created, from his roots in a dynasty of music-loving butchers and innkeepers, to building his own brood of six children. He wasn’t the sort of composer to lock himself away and loved nothing more than the happy chaos of his domestic life. We hear how his family inspired some of his purest music, and how they factored into some of his biggest career dilemmas.

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Pigeons and Prairies

Kate Molleson explores Dvořák’s vital connection to nature.

Antonin Dvořák was one of the most heartfelt tunesmiths in classical music - a man who not only brought the sound of Czech folklore to the world, but also had an indelible impact on the musical nationhood of America. As a character he was sometimes shy, sometimes melancholy, routinely homesick and deeply passionate. Through the week Kate Molleson explores five windows onto Dvořák’s soul, aspects of life that were really central to his convictions and his music.

Today, Dvořák the nature-lover. The outside world wasn’t just something he took a bit of quaint inspiration from, but something he couldn’t live without. He was scared of crowds, thieves and fire, so cities tested his nerves. His summer house, Vysoka, was the necessary antidote to the demands of a busy metropolitan life, where he walked, wrote, and most importantly, looked after his beloved pet pigeons.

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

In Good Faith

Kate Molleson takes a look at Dvořák’s religious life.

Today, we hear about another key part of Dvořák's personality - his faith. Raised Catholic, he was steadfast throughout his life, and would sign off each manuscript with “God be thanked”. Dvořák thought of his faith and creativity as inextricably linked, and it was through prayer that he found his direction in moments of troubled soul-searching, answers to ethical dilemmas and a refuge in times of deep personal pain.

Aldeburgh Festival 2024: Mahler's 4th Symphony

In Britten's Violin Concerto we hear all of that composer's hallmarks: recurring drama, daring virtuosity, and searing harmonies. With this performance the brilliant soloist Daniel Pioro joins the canon of leading violinists to have played Britten's iconic work at the Aldeburgh Festival.

Elizabeth Watts joins the orchestra in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, his sunniest. The whole work arises from a simple child-like song, “The heavenly life”, that the composer wrote a decade before the symphony itself. It is a work of tremendous, almost celestial, beauty.

In similar fashion, Judith Weir began Forest “with nothing but the opening melody in mind. Nearly everything in the piece has grown from the tiny musical seeds encountered in the opening bars, and the composition has unfolded in a particularly natural and organic way. On reaching the conclusion I felt rather like a fairytale character pressing deeper and deeper into a mysterious prospect of trees”.

Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Homeland

Kate Molleson discusses Dvořák’s identity and nationhood.

Today - his love of his homeland and its people. Although Dvořák wasn’t a man who got too involved with active patriotic organisations, his Czech identity mattered to him deeply, and his work was nonetheless political in his choices of language, of folk melody, all the proud and painful yearning that saturates his music. Over in America, hopes were pinned on him to foster a common musical language for a pioneering polyglot nation – and against a backdrop of segregation and persecution, he stuck his neck out and demanded respect for the power of indigenous and minority cultures.

Aldeburgh Festival 2024: Bruckner's 7th Symphony

One of Bruckner’s most popular symphonies, the Seventh opens with a theme which he apparently heard in a dream – and it proceeds on a grand scale, with a seemingly ever-unfolding melody, and bold sustained climaxes which contrast strikingly with moments of serenity and playfulness.

And composed especially for Alban Gerhardt, Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto has been described as "the biggest and most ambitious... and arguably the most important concerto for that instrument to appear since Lutosławski's in 1970. The solo writing pushes the cellist –the superb Alban Gerhardt– to the limits of the possible."

FRI 16:00 Composer of the Week (m002036d)
Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904)

Trainspotter

Kate Molleson journeys across Dvořák’s life through his passion for all things transport.

Today we join Dvořák on some of his most memorable travels. As a boy, he grew up watching a major new railway line being built metres from his house, and for the rest of his life, he was captivated by trains – so much so that in Prague, trainspotting was part of his daily routine . His career took him thousands of miles away, and brought him a new passion for steamships – but he also had to wrestle with his propensity for extreme homesickness.

FRI 22:00 Late Junction (m002036n)
Sounds for a Midsummer’s Night

Verity Sharp picks a selection of adventurous tracks to celebrate the longest day of the year, embracing the summer with open arms (and ears). Amongst the selections are a composition made from field recordings collected by Kate Carr during a walk along the Thames during the 2023 Summer Solstice; plus circular, hypnotic hymns from the new album by New England collective, Old Saw.

We’ll head outdoors ourselves, rolling through the luminous grass of sound artist Ludwig Berger’s Garden Of Ediacara, a fictional place, imagined as existing 600 millions years ago, where various ecosystems coexist harmoniously. In the distance, the mysterious harmonies of a Gregorian chant-like piece from Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence are coming nearer. And, as the sun eventually disappears, there’s time to dance to Azu Tiwaline and Forest Drive West's dubwise beats and the trance-inducing music of Sipaningkah, who draws on both his sonic heritage as Minangkabau, an ethnic group native of West Sumatra, as well as Western electro-acoustic traditions. And - who knows? - there might just be time for an appearance from “the clamorous owl, that nightly hoots and wonders / At our quaint spirits” before sleep takes hold.
