The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

Building a Library: Brahms; Symphony No.1 in C minor, Op.68, with Ivan Hewett.

Brahms' 1st Symphony begins in struggle, in C minor, and progresses from the turbulent searing string line kept in check by the powerful, persistent timpani beat in the opening bars to a triumphant finale in C major by the end. The whole symphony feels in a sense like a battle. Although Brahms began to compose the first movement of his 1st Symphony in 1862, he took the best part of fourteen years to complete the whole symphony. During the intervening years, he composed the Variations on a Theme by Haydn, his Sextet and many solo piano pieces. When the 1st Symphony was finally premiered in 1876, it was hailed as the most significant since Schumann. There are echoes too of Beethoven's 5th Symphony which likewise progresses from C minor to C major.

SAT 12:15 Music Matters (b0b03cg9)
Night Blossoms

With Tom Service. As part of Radio 3's Night Blossoms, Tom visits Japan during cherry blossom season, finding musical portals to other worlds: from Noh theatre to Japanoise, and from Bach to today's composers fusing ancient and modern ideas. Tom is accompanied by the violinist and translator Midori Komachi.

At a traditional house in the back streets of Tokyo, Tom meets the composer Yuka Takechi, shakuhachi player Rei Jin and koto player Yoko Nishi, who reveal the meaning of Ma, the space between words, objects, and sounds which is full of significance for Japanese culture: and a principal which underpins much of the music in this programme.

Dating back to the 14th century, Noh theatre is known for its rich repertoire of stories, distinctive staging, masks, costumes and music. To discover the secrets of how it connects this world with the world beyond the stage, Tom meets Diego Pellecchia, an Italian-born Noh practitioner who teaches at Kyoto University, and visits the Kita school in Tokyo to witness Noh's unique final rehearsal, the moshiawase, for the play Sakuragawa (The River of Cherry Blossoms).

At Tokyo's Soup bar, an influential venue for Japan's noise music scene, singer Taichi Nagura of Endon explains how his extreme vocal techniques enable him to transcend to other dimensions. And on the other end of the spectrum, conductor Masaaki Suzuki tells Tom about his annual performances of the St Matthew Passion, and how Bach's music has helped Japanese audiences in times of natural disaster.

And in Inokashira Park, with people gathering for one of Japan's famous Night Blossom parties, Tom encounters one of the country's leading composers, whose other-worldly music combines the delicacy of blossoming flowers with the untamed power of nature: Toshio Hosokawa.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (b0b0wlh1)
Inside Music with Claire Booth

A new series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside. Today soprano Claire Booth explains how a song by Mussorgsky has to be sung in Russian to stop it sounding like Gilbert and Sullivan, why the scherzo of Bruckner's 8th Symphony requires just the right tempo and how a Liszt arrangement of a Schubert song made her daughter cry with fear.

At 2 o'clock Claire reveals her Must Listen piece. It's a work she describes as dividing musical opinion - but wonders whether the sceptics have simply been listening to the wrong recordings. As she says, her chosen performance has opened her ears to the piece's sense of space.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3.

SAT 15:00 Sound of Dance (b0b0wlh4)
Caribbean Dance

So much of the culture of the Caribbean has been shaped by the many and various peoples who have informed its history, and this is mirrored in its music and dance.

Katie Derham looks at some of distinctive dance styles of the Caribbean and meets the award-winning choreographers Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, whose latest dance collaboration DFS, currently running at Sadlers Wells, fuses Caribbean Dance Hall with the music of Machaut.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b07qblw7)
Steve Silberman

Steve Silberman is an award-winning investigative reporter based in San Francisco; he writes for The New Yorker, Nature, Wired and Time Magazine. He has spent ten years researching the untold history of autism for his book "Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently". Published last year, it won the biggest British prize for a non-fiction book, the Samuel Johnson prize, as well as many American awards.

The book sets out to answer a deceptively simple question: why is so little understood about autism, 70 years after it was first discovered? Since writing it, Silberman has become an ally to thousands of people with autism who haven't had a voice, and for what's become known as "neurodiversity".

In Private Passions, Steve Silberman talks to Michael Berkeley about his time listening to people with autism, trying to understand the world from their point of view. He discusses the connection between autism and eccentricity, and between autism and musical ability. He reveals too his own sense of being an outsider, growing up gay, and reminisces about years spent working as an assistant to the poet Allen Ginsberg.

Steve Silberman's music choices are fascinating and unconventional, ranging from the 13th century to Steve Reich. He includes music by the contemporary American composer Lou Harrison, who was wonderfully eccentric - he built an American version of a gamelan out of hubcaps! Other music choices include Bill Evans with "Peace Piece" and "Timeless" by Oregon.

How does video game music work?

Bleep... bleep.... bleeeeep

It's amazing how a few electronic bleeps can tell us so much about what's going on in a video game without us even being aware of it

But music in video games has come a long way from the arcades, from the bleeps and bloops of Space Invaders and Super Mario to epic orchestral scores of the Legend of Zelda and Bioshock, Tom Service goes on an interactive odyssey to discover the secrets behind our favourite video game music. Along the way he meets composer Jessica Curry and video game expert Tim Summers who tell us what's really happening in the music when we're playing, the composer tricks of the trade and how video games can get new audiences closer to classical music.

bleeeeeeep... GAME OVER.

Reconciliation

In our personal lives or on the world stage, reconciliation is an essential part of humankind's co-existence and civility. It can sometimes be a painful process, admitting our mistakes or failings, but it can also be a moment of celebration where we achieve redemption and forgiveness; where we can put the past behind us and move forward with great hope and optimism. Actors Harriet Walter and Oliver Dimsdale read poetry by John Donne, Peter Porter and Christina Rossetti, with music by Tchaikovsky, John Adams and Nick Cave.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b0b0wrpk)
Japan's Never-Ending War

Rana Mitter visits Tokyo to talk to directors, critics and students about how today's Japan tells itself the story of World War Two through its movies.

In Europe, the War is history, but in East Asia it's still current affairs. The way the War is remembered has deep resonance, even as disagreement over what happened persists.

So Rana explores how recent Japanese war movies have focused on the suffering of Japanese civilians in the late stages of the war, such as Arai Haruhiko's THIS COUNTRY'S SKY and Katabuchi Sunao's blockbuster anime IN THIS CORNER OF THE WORLD.

He finds out how there has also been something of a rise in movies which, for some at least, are seen as venerating the sacrifice of the Japanese armed forces, including the kamikaze pilots, such as FOR THOSE WE LOVE and the huge hit THE ETERNAL ZERO. Though, as Rana discovers, this is a contentious question, as some read THE ETERNAL ZERO as an anti-war film.

Rana talks to two directors whose recent war movies express their fears that Japan may be heading back towards a more bellicose mindset. Tsukamoto Shinya explains the warning he wants his brutal indy hit SHADOWS ON THE PLAIN to deliver to young Japanese viewers, who are far removed from direct memories of the horrors of war. And Harada Masato tells Rana what drove him to make THE EMPEROR IN AUGUST - a sympathetic take on Hirohito's role in the Japanese decision to surrender. As Harada puts it, the story shows how much harder it is to end a war than to start one.

Rana also talks to critics and historians, and meets a new generation of movie-goers to find out what they see in these movies. And he explores how China is dramatizing the war on screen. He talks to the director and the Chinese-American executive co-producer of a new documentary, charting the devastating impact of Japanese military violence in the Chinese city of Nanjing in 1937.

Finally, Rana asks, can Japanese and Chinese perspectives on the war be reconciled? And can movies encourage mutual understanding?

With: Arai Haruhiko, Katabuchi Sunao, Harada Masato, Tsukamoto Shinya, Jeff Kingston, Mark Schilling, Jasper Sharp, Akio Takahara, Cecilia Chan and Vanessa Roth

PRODUCER: PHIL TINLINE.

In this episode, Copland returns to his home town of New York, where he made his name during the early 1930s. Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin remembers friends killed in the First World War.

John Adams's 'The Wound Dresser', for baritone and orchestra, sets words by Walt Whitman, who tended the battle-wounded in the American Civil War, while Ross Harris's 'Face' celebrates the work of fellow New Zealander, the plastic surgeon Harold Gillies, who pioneered facial reconstruction during the First World War in London, and contributed to the rehabilitation of thousands of servicemen. Face, with a libretto by Vincent O'Sullivan, is scored for solo and choral voices with orchestra.

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b0b0x4b2)
My Life in Music, Cage Sonatas and Hancock's Head Hunters

Away from the concert platform, five musicians write about the music that has shaped their personal lives.
Composer Kerry Andrew met bassist and heavy metal enthusiast Andrew online. On meeting in the flesh, she discovered that amongst their vast individual CD collections, they had two discs in common: John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes, played by Boris Berman, and Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock. Would this overlap in musical taste be an indicator of a successful partnership for life?

Verity Sharp with Stephen Prince

Verity is joined by wyrd folk and hauntology enthusiast Stephen Prince. Stephen puts out records and books under the name A Year In The Country that celebrate otherly pastoralism and the further reaches of folk. Tonight he shares records that revel in nostalgia for a mis-remembered past and quiet unsettling atmospheres.

Verity adds her own seasonal flavour with springtime tracks from The Hare And The Moon and Neil McSweeney. South Indian violinist Jyotsna Srikanth basks in raga rotations and there's celestial siren calls created through electro-acoustic vocal treatments by composer Sarah Davachi.

Produced by Rebecca Gaskell for Reduced Listening.

From the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester

Presented by Tom Redmond

Strauss: Tod und Verklärung
Mark Simpson: Cello Concerto (world premiere)

Music Interval

Shostakovich: Symphony No.1

Leonard Elschenbroich (cello)
BBC Philharmonic
Clemens Schuldt (conductor)

Mark Simpson has been Composer in Association of the BBC Philharmonic since 2015 and tonight's concert gives us the opportunity to hear the world premiere of his most recent work, his Cello Concerto, commissioned for the BBC Philharmonic and a virtuoso favourite of the orchestra, Leonard Elschenbroich. Pieces written by other composers in their youth feature in the rest of the programme. Strauss's 'Tod und Verklärung' is a graphic portrayal of the death of an artist, a work which seems even more remarkable as he was a mere twenty-five when he composed it. He spoke of the tone poem in a letter to a friend, "The hour of death approaches, the soul leaves the body in order to find gloriously achieved in everlasting space those things which could not be fulfilled here below." Shostakovich wrote his First Symphony as his graduation piece from the Leningrad Conservatory and the piece quickly gained worldwide recognition. It is amazing that his unique, distinctive musical personality and a great emotional depth ring through this work, written when he was nineteen.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b0b0xcrn)
Aaron Copland (1900-1990), A Witchhunt

Aaron Copland is the composer who, more than any other, defined the sound of American classical music. Copland's life spanned every decade of the 20th Century, and this week Donald Macleod explores the composer's life and music against the background of the events of that Century. In today's episode, Donald recounts the struggles that Copland endured through the 1950s as he found himself persecuted for alleged communist activities by Senator Joseph McCarthy.

THU 14:00 Afternoon Concert (b0b10j8x)
Opera Matinee: Weber's Oberon

This week's Opera Matinee features some of the best operatic music you've never heard. Productions of Weber's fantasy opera Oberon are like hen's teeth (or perhaps unicorns' horns) because the plot is even more crazy than most in opera, there's too much talking, and Weber died young before he could replace the spoken dialogue with music. But for this broadcast of a lively new production from Bavarian State Opera we've minimised the talking to leave you with the music Weber did compose. And it's absolutely brilliant.
(Special shout-out to Wagner fans: see if you can spot the bits RW cribbed. It's not a tough assignment: some of them are gobsmackingly obvious...)

Presented by Penny Gore

And so at true mid-Night
Shall I steer this boat forwards
With the comfort of lights receding
And over the threshold between salt water and ethe?

The years remind me, just as Winter pulls the trees
That I have been born before the light
And need to become by crossing over
One key to one abyss

He gave us four magnificent choral works, three of which we hear in this concert, and one of which, Zadok the Priest, has been heard at every British coronation since 1727. Stephen Farr joins St James' Baroque for Handel's delightful 'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale' organ concerto before the concert closes with Handel's thrilling Dixit Dominus, a work from his early years in Italy. Sofi Jeannin returns to London and the BBC Singers for this stirring celebration of Handel.
