Martin Handley presents Radio 3's classical breakfast show with music marking "Debussy's Paris" commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Debussy this weekend.
8.30-8.40 Debussy's Paris 2: Le Chat Noir"
Georgia Mann takes a jaunt around Belle Epoque Paris and a look at the background to the celebrated Bohemian cabaret club, Le Chat Noir.
Email 3breakfast@bbc.co.uk.
Georgia Mann on a journey through Debussy's Paris visits the place where symbolist poet Stephane Mallarme held his famous Tuesday salons to discuss some of the latest thinking and ideas about the arts. Georgia is joined in Mallarme's house on the Rue de Rome by Mallarme expert Dr Damian Catarni.
Presented by Tom Service.
As part of "Debussy's Paris" on BBC Radio 3, marking the 100th anniversary of the composer's death this weekend, Tom explores new perspectives on Debussy's music.
At a centenary conference hosted jointly by the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Glasgow, Tom discovers Debussy's Manchester connection, and meets researchers at the forefront of today's thinking about the French composer: Marianne Wheeldon, on the legacy of the late works written during the First World War; Helen Abbott and Mylene Dubiau on bringing meaning out in performances of his songs; and Matthew Brown, on the influence of Bach on the Violin Sonata.
Tom also talks to the conductor Francois-Xavier Roth about releasing the colours in Debussy's music, both with his French period instrument ensemble Les Siecles and with the London Symphony Orchestra. The composer Betsy Jolas reveals the inspiration of the Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp on her own music, and Bruno Mantovani, director of the Paris Conservatoire, considers whether young composers today are retaining enough of a Debussy connection.
Plus the author of a new biography, Stephen Walsh, on the challenges of putting into words how Debussy's music works.
Conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier chooses music from Paris in the Belle Époque as part of "Debussy's Paris" marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Debussy this weekend. His choices include music by Maurice Ravel, Paul Dukas, Florent Schmitt, Jacques Offenbach, Camille Saint-Saens, Lili Boulanger, and Claude Debussy.
1.30-1.40 Debussy's Paris 4: "The Paris Expositions and Art Nouveau"
Georgia Mann continues her journey through fin-de-siècle Paris at the Eiffel Tower and the Grand Palais with French art curator Emanuel Coquery and a look at the impact of the Great Paris Expositions and the explosion of the Art Nouveau.
Georgia Mann with a look at the importance of money and the haute bourgeoisie in Debussy's Paris. She walks in the footsteps of Marcel Proust, in the affluent area around the Parc Monceau and visits one of the most luxurious private houses of the period, that of Eduard Andre and his wife Nelie Jacquemart. A house, built in 1875 and bequeathed to the state in 1913 and which is still much as it was in their day.
Matthew Sweet on the spirit of decadence and the thirst for the exotic in 19th-century Paris and introduces music performed by the Nash Ensemble and French actress Lesley Caron.

Artist Howard McGhee and Fats NavarroGeorgia Mann continues her journey through Debussy's Paris with a visit to the 19th-century Cirque d'Hiver for a focus on the impact of popular entertainment on artists of the day.
Like Lautrec, Seurat and Picasso, Debussy loved the circus, and famously depicted the clown 'General Lavine' in one of his piano preludes. "The attraction of the virtuoso for the public is very like that of the circus for the crowd," he once said.
Julian Joseph presents Gwilym Simcock's jazz influenced version of Debussy's Children's Corner Suite specially arranged for piano, saxophone and string quartet. Recorded at the BBC's studios in Salford featuring Simmy Singh (violin), Lucy McKay (violin), Francesca Gilbert (viola), Rachel Shakespeare (cello), Rob Buckland (soprano and tenor saxes) and Gwilym Simcock on grand piano.
Georgia Mann explores facets of Debussy's Paris with a look at the arrival of Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes, and a visit to the Art Deco temple to the arts, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
Diaghalev and his Russians made a huge impact on the Parisian art world at the turn of the 20th century and one of the first composers Diaghilev sought to write a new ballet for his company was Debussy. A new, forward-looking theatre was required, a place that reflected modern thinking and modern ideas - a place such as the newly built Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on Paris's west side.

Sarah Walker with music by Beethoven, Bach, and Buxtehude, as well as Vaughan Williams and Peter Maxwell Davies. Plus two very different interpretations of Sheherazade.
Xavier Bray is a renowned specialist in 17th- and 18th-century art, and he's been director for a year now of the Wallace Collection, that rich collection of rococo painting, china, and armour, housed in a grand mansion in Marylebone that remains something of a well-kept secret. Bray would like to change that, opening up the gallery to a wider public and to music of all kinds. He himself would have loved to be an opera singer, and he has sung in choirs all his life. His party piece is a demonstration of Mongolian throat singing, which he taught himself after going to a concert as a student. He gives Michael Berkeley a demonstration, and discusses, more seriously, the connection between the visual arts and music. He reveals his other musical passions: for Marin Marais, flamenco, Bizet, Messiaen, and for the Italian tenor Beniamino Gigli.
Produced by Elizabeth Burke
A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

Stile Antico
The long reign of Elizabeth I saw an unparalleled flourishing of musical composition. Elizabeth's personal patronage of William Byrd and Thomas Tallis, her attempts at religious tolerance, and her own love of music created an environment for a 'golden age' of music. Stile Antico explores the events of Elizabeth's life and reign; from antiphons recalling the glories of Henry VIII's Catholic court, to virtuosic madrigals using the latest continental innovations to praise the 'Virgin Queen', the programme celebrates the rich musical legacy of Elizabeth I.

1010 Time Traveller - A quirky slice of cultural history
1050 Each day this week the writer and illustrator Judith Kerr, of "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" fame, reveals the cultural influences that have inspired and shaped her life and career.
Donald Macleod looks at the life and music of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, notorious for the murder of his first wife and cousin, Maria d'Avalos. In his earliest extant composition he pleads for divine mercy for his misdeeds. This was written several years before committing a brutal murder to defend his honour. Until the death of his older brother, Carlo Gesualdo was always destined for a career in the Church. But on becoming the heir to the house of Gesualdo he married his beautiful cousin, Maria d'Avalos, said to be the most beautiful woman in Naples. Later, learning of her infidelity, he was obliged to act to preserve the honour of his house. Donald recounts some of the horrendous events of that night in 1590 when Gesualdo - a man passionately interested in music and in hunting - would deal with his wife and her lover.

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and organist Julian Wilkins give a concert of Debussy, Messiaen and Bach from Symphony Hall. Tom Redmond presents.
"Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien is a masterpiece that has not yet been understood. Debussy wrote his Parsifal that day." So wrote Emile Vuillermoz in 1920, 9 years after Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien received its heavy censuring. But the scandal it caused wasn't really surprising, given its quasi-religious ecstasy and complex sexual implications - not least the cross-dressing of dancer and choreographer Ida Rubinstein. Debussy retorted "I have made mysterious Nature my religion". And what an influence this mysticism had upon disciple Messiaen, whose concluding section of the radiant and monumental Dieu parmi nous was inspired by the mountains close to Grenoble.

In the first of five essay's responding to the BBC's TV series Civilisations, Sir Roger Scruton explores the notion that music might be a civilising force. His response draws on his own boyhood experiences of Classical Music as well as the nuanced thoughts and conclusions of Plato. He also tackles the uneasy relationship between history's less savoury music enthusiasts, Stalin and Hitler, and the lack of any civilising impact it had on them. There are no pat answers to these serious and challenging questions, but Sir Roger's conclusions rely for the most part on his responses to music and the potential he sees in it alongside religion, morality and love in any encounter with darker forces.

1050 Each day this week the writer and illustrator Judith Kerr, of "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" fame, reveals the cultural influences that have inspired and shaped her life and career.
Donald Macleod looks at the extraordinary life and music of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa.
A mere two years after murdering his first wife, the beautiful Donna Maria d'Avalos, Gesualdo is betrothed to marry another eligible woman - Leonora d'Este. He sets out for the Este court at Ferrara, and among the 300 items of luggage he transports there he takes care to pack his books of madrigals. The experience of Ferrara's wondrous musical culture will profoundly influence his own compositions. As to the second marriage - it was barely happier than Gesualdo's first.

Professor Alice Roberts chooses to look thousands of years back in human and pre-human history for signs and signals that music was not so much a civilising as a humanising force. Her exploration takes her to ancient archaeological sites where traces of early instruments have been found and the evidence of shifts and re-shapings in our pre-hominid ancestors which suggest some kind of musical interaction long before language developed.
To mark the publication of a new book about Molly Drake, English poet, musician and mother to Nick Drake, Max Reinhardt explores the roots of famous musical families including the Carters, Bach's and Ligeti's.
Elsewhere in the programme, Max previews new music by Bruno Heinen.

Donald Macleod continues his look at the life and music of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa. Now remarried, Gesualdo is far from being a model husband. There are whispers that he abuses her verbally, and sometimes physically. Certainly, they spend many months apart. As ever, Gesualdo is obsessed with music, and in common with some of his contemporaries further explores the expressive possibilities of chromaticism and counterpoint in madrigals and motets. Both Gesualdo and Leonora, his wife, take delight in their young son Alfonsino, but will be devastated when the infant falls ill and dies.

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Afua Hirsch and Tarjinder Wilkinson debate activism, social change and Britishness with Philip Dodd.
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is a journalist and broadcaster who regularly comments on immigration, diversity, and multiculturalism. She's a founding member of British Muslims for Secular Democracy and the author of books including, Exotic England: The Making of A Curious Nation and Refusing The Veil.
Afua Hirsch is a writer and broadcaster. She has worked as a barrister, as the West Africa correspondent for the Guardian, and as social affairs editor for Sky news. Brit(ish) is her first book and was awarded a RSL Jerwood Prize for Nonfiction.
Tarjinder Wilkinson is a primary school teacher working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Birmingham, Leicester and London. She blogs on race, culture and identity at All In Britain and writes on the failure of left-wing progressive methods in education, making the case for a more traditional, academic approach for all.
Professor Kofi Agawu of Princeton University provides the third in The Essay series running in parallel to the BBC TV series Civilisations. Once again he is responding to the question of whether or not music is an entirely civilising force, and he does so having just returned from a visit to west Africa. Prof Agawu wonders how the musicians of the Asante kingdom, the sophisticated drummers, poets and singers, might respond to the idea that what they do is civilising, but he also tackles the colonial notion that the music of the colonisers was somehow superior to indigenous music and with that civilising. It's not a theory that stands the test of time when he recalls the four-part Lutheran hymns he remembers from his youth with the highly sophisticated rhythmic and poetic structures of Asante music which are now used in serious and popular music around the world.
The sound of secrets and subterfuge. Perched on top of a man-made hill created from the remains of war-ravaged Berlin, Field Station Berlin is a stark reminder of the quiet but ever-present threat of the Cold War. Its huge, golf ball-like radomes were designed to intercept communications from the East but are now a magnet to graffiti artists. They're also a sonic playground; the highest radome is one of the few intact spherical spaces in the world and the acoustic effect is startling. Max presents a collection of field recordings made at the abandoned NSA listening post Field Station Berlin.
Elsewhere on the programme, Max has a music from cellist Clarice Jensen who co-created work with Jóhann Jóhannsson for her latest album, Brad Meldhau's take on Bach, and music by Charlemagne Palestine who pays tribute to his departed friend and collaborator Tony Conrad.

1010 Time Traveller - A quirky slice of cultural history
1050 Each day this week the writer and illustrator Judith Kerr, of "The Tiger Who Came to Tea" fame, reveals the cultural influences that have inspired and shaped her life and career.
Donald Macleod continues the strange and sometimes baffling tale of Carlo Gesualdo. Frequently ill and afflicted with melancholy, he is caught up in an extraordinary scandal involving two lovers, and a potentially deadly charge of dabbling in witchcraft. Nor is his wife Leonora free from the danger of spells and enchantment. She even calls on the services of an exorcist priest to deliver the castle from malign forces at work. Despite this disturbing background, Gesualdo works on writing some of his finest and most moving sacred music.

In a space of less than a mile, seven bridges link Newcastle with Gateshead including the distinctive shape of the Tyne Bridge. But what kind of human endeavour goes into imagining and realising such man-made wonders? Newcastle University's Sean Wilkinson, Erica Wagner author of Chief Engineer, and architect Simon Roberts look at the bond between the visionaries and the grafters with Rana Mitter and an audience at Sage Gateshead.
Erica Wagner is the author of Chief Engineer: The Man Who Built the Brooklyn Bridge, a biography of civil engineer Washington Roebling. Erica is former literary editor of The Times, the author of several books and is a lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Goldsmith's University of London.
Sean Wilkinson is a Reader in Structural Engineering at Newcastle University whose research includes work on resilient communities, the design of high rise buildings and earthquakes.
Architect Simon Roberts works for Wilkinson Eyre who designed the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and has worked solely on bridge projects for the past decade
Producer: Debbie Kilbride.
Jameela Siddiqi remembers her own relatively late discovery of the power of Indian classical music in the hands of the Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. A successful TV news producer with a stable job and a casual enthusiasm for music from Bach to the Beatles she found her world turned upside down by a concert by Khan in the late 1980s. She describes what happened to her, the musical world into which she felt inducted and the qualities of that world that she believes are entirely civilising.
Verity Sharp hosts a concert from North Wales recorded at Neuadd Ogwen, Bethesda, showcasing local artists working in experimental music genres.
Featuring sets from Hopewell Ink (spoken word and multi-instrumentalist duo), Accretion Entropy (electronic music trio) and Sweet Baboo (solo drone-based set featuring synthesizer and saxophone).
Prolific Scottish musician, unorthodox folk singer and champion of traditional song Alasdair Roberts crafts a mixtape for Late Junction.
Influenced by traditional folklore and time spent in the School of Scottish Studies archive in Edinburgh, as well as a healthy obsession with the darkest corners of musical history, Alasdair is equally at home creating his own epic ballads and channelling ancient songs he's dug up from the distant past. His work, spanning 25 years and at least that many albums, weaves together his own original storytelling with interpretations of traditional songs and myth from Scotland and beyond.
Known for his collaborations, Alasdair has worked with just about everyone, from the Scottish psych folk quintet Trembling Bells to German electronic duo Joasihno, as well as performing as part of folk supergroup The Furrow Collective. His most recent collaboration with Amble Skuse and David McGuinness has been described by another of his collaborators, the legendary Shirley Collins, as 'the album of the decade'.
Expect early 20th-century field recordings from the Appalachian Mountains, haunting female vocals from Transylvania and, of course, a sonic voyage into the nooks and crannies of Scotland's past.

Donald Macleod concludes his account of the extraordinary life and music of Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa. By the time Gesualdo publishes his collection of Responsaries for Holy Week, and his final books of madrigals, he is a sick man, beset by various physical and mental infirmities. Nevertheless, he appears to be determined to secure his future reputation as a musician, and to secure the future of the house of Gesualdo. Estranged from his sole surviving heir from his first marriage, he is briefly reconciled with his son Emmanuele, only to be devastated when that son is killed in a hunting accident, leaving no direct male heir. With the effective extinction of the male line, Gesualdo loses hope and turns his face to the wall. His final publications, printed in his very own castle, secure his reputation as an ingenious, if somewhat unhinged, composer of madrigals and motets.

The writer and psychoanalyst Adam Phillips is the author of 'On Kindness', and 'On Kissing, Tickling and Being Bored' amongst other works of non-fiction. He is also a regular contributor to the London Review of Books. Adam invited The Verb into his west-London consulting room to discuss the rules and significance of Freud's concept of 'free association', the importance of inconclusive conclusions and what he sees as the lopsided relationship between poetry and psychoanalysis - something he explores in his new book 'In Writing: Essays on Literature' (Hamish Hamilton).
AL Kennedy is a writer and stand-up comedian - for The Verb she explores the importance of 'no' in conversation and in writing, the illusion of spontaneity in comedy and the reasons why Meg, one of the characters in her latest novel 'Serious Sweet' (Vintage), is sceptical of 'talking cures'. AL Kennedy won the Costa Book of the Year award in 2007 for 'Day'.

Paul Morley would be happy to sign up to the notion that music is a civilising force were it not for the fact that everywhere he finds it co-opted for purposes that have precious little to do with the common good. Making a journey in a lift more relaxing, easing the stress of the shopping experience and luring people towards a purchase do not seem to him to be the hallmarks of civilisation. Paul finds much to rejoice at in the way technology has made music available to so many but calls for a vigilance in the easy assumption that all music is good.
Kathryn Tickell introduces a concert by the Afro-Cuban All Stars, recorded at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
