SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b05zgh5w)
Alison Goldfrapp

As part of the BBC's Classical Voice season, Michael Berkeley's guest is singer Alison Goldfrapp.

Alison Goldfrapp burst onto the music scene fifteen years ago, as lead singer in the duo Goldfrapp with the debut album Felt Mountain. Rock critics reached for adjectives such as 'lush', 'symphonic', 'epic'. Since Felt Mountain there have been five more hit albums, moving across pop, dance, electronic music - but each featuring the same extraordinary voice. Alongside the six gold albums, Goldfrapp also composed the soundtrack for the John Lennon film, Nowhere Boy, and the music for the recent Medea, starring Helen McCrory, at the National Theatre.

In Private Passions, Alison Goldfrapp talks to Michael Berkeley about finding her voice, and about the childhood that inspired her. Her father ('a closet hippy') used to take all six children out into the Hampshire woods, and make them sit still and listen, for hours; when there was a full moon he would drive them to the sea, for a night swim. The first time Goldfrapp heard her own voice soar was as a schoolgirl at the Alton Convent School in Hampshire, and encouraged by the nuns, she sang higher and higher until she felt a kind of 'buzzing' in her head: an unforgettable experience.

Goldfrapp chooses music which features a choir of extraordinary women's voices, the Bulgarian State Radio female choir, and Jessye Norman singing Fruhling from Strauss's Four Last Songs. She also chooses Atmospheres by Gyorgy Ligeti - music she finds very frightening - and celebrates both Mahler, and Ennio Morricone's film music, especially his score to an erotic thriller from 1969, Dirty Angels. And she reveals the music her partner Lisa Gunning sends her to listen to when they're apart.

A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

SUN 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b05y61y9)
Wigmore Hall Mondays: Gould Piano Trio

The Gould Trio in a concert of chamber music, live from London's Wigmore Hall.

York Bowen's Rhapsody Trio op 80, a romantic work by one of the major figures on the British music scene in the first half of the twentieth century. He was nicknamed "The English Rachmaninov" and the Gould Trio are among those bringing his music back into the repertoire after decades of neglect.

Schubert's Piano Trio in B flat major is a large-scale work, but never loses a sense of intimacy. Although written in the final year of his life, Schubert writes lyrical music full of joy. According to Robert Schumann, "One glance at Schubert's Trio and the troubles of our human existence disappear and all the world is fresh and bright again."

The Gould Piano Trio are Lucy Gould (violin), Benjamin Frith (piano) and Alice Neary (cello).

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b05zgh64)
An Anatomy of Singing

Mary King investigates how advances in our knowledge of anatomy are changing the way we sing.

The craft of singing is famously traditional. Teachers hand on knowledge to pupils who hand it on again. A performer who is "good" to one set of ears can be "bad" to another. West End casting guru David Grindrod may have some answers. But are there physical factors that determine how we decide on style, taste and sound? Why do our voices sound different to each other? What parts of our body are essential to vocal production? How much do we know about what happens in our body when we sing? Is vocal ability due to our anatomy, our intuition or training? Is there a point at which understanding how our singing voice functions converges with training? Author of a vocal pedagogy, singer and teacher Janice Chapman believes understanding vocal function is fundamental to acquiring a good singing technique. We'll hear from Andrew Watts, Toby Spence and Connie Fisher, three singers whose personal vocal experiences have resulted in contrasting relationships with their vocal anatomy.

A professional singer and vocal coach herself, Mary King gathers the latest findings from within the music and scientific community and tests out some of the more popular theories of yesteryear.

Pioneering laryngeal surgeon Steven Zeitels' "Atlas of Phonomicrosurgery" is considered by many surgeons to be a definitive text in microsurgery of the larynx. But identifying the importance of understanding our vocal anatomy can be traced back to the pioneering work of a nineteenth-century singing teacher, Manuel Garcia. In 1840 he published the Garcia School Complete Treatise on the Art of Singing. This guide to vocal production included Garcia's own observations as to how sound is produced by vocal techniques. Garcia is arguably credited with the invention of the laryngoscope. At the Royal College of Surgeons, Dr. Sam Alberti explains what our forebears would have discovered by dissecting specimens of the larynx and thorax, still on display today. Rather more recently, the invention of the endoscope has revolutionised the work of surgeons like consultant laryngologist Declan Costello, whose voice clinics offer help to singers when their voices go wrong. However, despite the mechanics responsible for making the sound, singing remains an emotional activity; brain imaging is providing information on emotion for neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott from University College, London. Looking to the future, Steve Zeitels says he's close to being able to repair the vocal folds by coating them with bio-materials. How far away is the age of the super-singer?

SUN 22:00 Drama on 3 (b03bfjqx)
The Father

August Strindberg's notorious drama from 1890 was his response to the most famous gender drama of the day, Ibsen's A Doll's House and charts the explosive power-struggle between a married couple.

This new version by Laurie Slade makes the The Father an uncompromising and psychologically astute portrayal of the battle of the sexes in a 19th-century middle-class marriage, with surprising insights into issues such as gender, the meaning of marriage, parental attitudes to child education, and the conflicts between science and religion.

This production was originally staged at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry with award-winning actors Joe Dixon and Katy Stephens as the Captain and his wife Laura.

An uneasy stand-off exists between an army Captain and his wife. A disagreement over the future of their daughter Bertha triggers an all-out war. Laura will stop at nothing to gain control of her daughter's education and when she suggests to the Captain that he may not actually be the girl's father at all, she sets a chain of events in motion, from which nobody escapes unharmed.

A Unique Production for BBC Radio 3.

Minds at War: Series 2

Tagore's Nobel Lectures

Further Essays in the major Radio Three series exploring how great artists and thinkers responded to World War One in individual works of art.

1.Rabindranath Tagore: Santanu Das explores the great Indian thinker's Nobel lectures

Afer Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, he became one of the most feted literary figure of the war years. He was read at home but also in the trenches, by the likes of Wilfred Owen.

With his long white beard, flowing Indian clothes and intense gaze, Tagore came across as some sort of Oriental prophet, speaking for peace at a time of war. In 1916, he gave a series of lectures in Japan and the United States on 'Nationalism'. In them he noted: 'In this frightful war, the West has stood face to face with her own creation'. For him, the War was neither a sudden eruption nor a case of Europe sleepwalking into conflict but, rather, the shattering logical climax of unchecked Western nationalism and imperialism: 'suddenly, with all its mechanism going mad, it has begun the dance of the Furies, shattering its own limbs, scattering them into the dust. It is the fifth act of the tragedy of the unreal.'

Santanu Das, Reader in English at King's College, London, tells the story of a largely fogotten writer and thnker.

Producer: Beaty Rubens.

MON 23:00 Jazz on 3 (b060psvn)
Ornette Coleman Tribute

A special tribute programme to one of the giants of jazz and the avant-garde, saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman, who died at the age of 85 earlier this month.

Coleman profoundly changed the course of jazz history in the late 1950s through albums such as 'The Shape of Jazz to Come', bringing a new harmonic freedom and way of interacting to the music. And he continued to push back the boundaries over the next half-century, whether as a founder of free jazz, through excursions into electric music, or collaborations with everyone from Pat Metheny to The Grateful Dead.

Jez Nelson is joined in the studio by John Fordham to chart Coleman's career through key recordings. The show includes favourite tracks and personal reflections from some of the musicians who worked closely with or were inspired by him, including singer Neneh Cherry, pianist Paul Bley, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and bass player Jamaaladeen Tacuma. We also hear exclusive archive interviews with trumpeter Don Cherry, and from the man himself: 'There's only 12 notes that satisfy the whole world - either you make something out of it, or you don't.'

Presenter: Jez Nelson
Producer: Chris Elcombe.

Minds at War: Series 2

Tzara's Dada Manifesto

How great artists and thinkers responded to the horrors of the First World War in individual works of art.

2.Stand-Up comedian Arthur Smith presents a suitably Dada-esque account of Tristan Tzara's Dada Manifesto.

Arthur Smith has long been fascinated by the Dada movement, which began one hundred years ago in 1915. His interest was re-ignited by a recent visit to the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, where Tzara - a French writer and performance artist of Romanian-Jewish descent - first came to prominence. This visit led him to reflect both on the seriousness of the dadists' project - as a protest against the meaningless horrors of the First World War - and on their use of comedy to express their ideas.

Juxtaposing the Dada Manifesto with his thoughts on that most conventional of War poets, Rupert Brooke, Arthur Smith's comic and thought-provoking Essay is a document of which Tristan Tzara himself - had he been a radio broadcaster - would have been proud.

Producer: Beaty Rubens.

Arvo Part (1935-)

Silence Is Like Fertile Soil

Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the life and music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.

Pärt had been listening, looking, reading, studying, probing, observing through some nine years of virtual silence, searching for a new style, when, one sunny morning in February 1976, he came through on the other side as he wrote down a piano piece which was to be called, in Estonian, Aliinale: For Alina. The music has no fixed metre or tempo. It's marked: "Calm, exalted, listening to one's inner self." It's seemingly so simple - timeless - but it answered many questions for Pärt. He says of this point in his life, as if he were describing the music of For Alina itself: "Begin from zero, from nothing. It's like if there is fresh snow and nobody has walked [on it], and you take the first steps on this snow. And this is the beginning of new life." Part of the BBC's Classical Voice Season, celebrating the art of singing.

We then move to Ireland's National Botanic Gardens for a performance of Beethoven's String Quartet in A Major, Op 18 no.5, performed by former Radio 3 New Generation Artists, the Escher Quartet. By the time this work was composed Beethoven was very much his own master, but ready to acknowledge, in his own voice, his particular debt to Mozart and an honoured past.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b05zhbgn)
Minds at War: Series 2

Woolf's Mrs Dalloway

Virginia Woolf spent the First World War on the Home front mainly in London. It was an anxious time; she lost several cousins in the conflict, and her brother-in-law Cecil Woolf died at the Front; in 1915 she suffered a mental breakdown.

For Woolf the war had changed everything, and her three novels written soon after it - Jacob's Room (1922), Mrs Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927) - display a marked shift in style. 'There had to be new forms for our new sensations', she wrote in a 1916 essay, and in 1923 went further:
"We are sharply cut off from our predecessors. A shift in the scale - the war, the sudden slip of masses held in position for ages - has shaken the fabric from top to bottom, alienated us from the past and made us perhaps too vividly conscious of the present."

In 1925, Woolf's brilliant novel Mrs Dalloway would amaze readers with its literary techniques and its counterpointing of society hostess Clarissa Dalloway and war veteran Septimus Warren-Smith. Here was a work of fiction in which the principal characters never meet, where the Victorian staples of plot and family relationships are eclipsed by a new emphasis on what the characters think rather than what they do or say.

For Dame Gillian Beer this thronging novel with its cast of war profiteers, war casualties, and passers-by ultimately has a positive message. In Mrs Dalloway Virginia Woolf draws the reader and the novel's characters together: "Whether known or unknown to each other, in a shared humanity," she says, "her work draws us all alongside, across time.".

Eternity and Purpose

In the autumn of 1979, Arvo and Nora Pärt had an unexpected caller at their apartment. It was a leading member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Soviet Estonia. He'd dropped by to offer a friendly suggestion: it might be better all round if they left the country. It was meant to look like a voluntary decision, but it was really an eviction order. So, at five o'clock on the morning of 18th January 1980, telling their children they were all going on a round-the-world trip, they set off from Baltic Station in Tallinn. Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the life and music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, in this programme focusing on the years after Pärt's move to the West. Ligeti: Piano Concerto

Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano
London Sinfonietta
George Benjamin, conductor

Two heavyweight but luminous modern works are at the heart of the London Sinfonietta's collaboration with George Benjamin and Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Ligeti's Piano Concerto, now strongly associated with Aimard's recordings, is filled in its fast movements with pounding cross-rhythms and dizzying virtuosity, while its slow movement yields to a desolate, lamenting abyss that lurks below the composer's dazzling surface.
'Dazzling' is also the key to Benjamin's At First Light, an evocation inspired by Turner's painting Norham Castle, Sunrise of a landscape in which all detail is washed out by overpowering light. Birtwistle and Knussen's works are both titled as 'songs', but where Birtwistle's is a rhythmic moto perpetuo in the vein of Ligeti's concerto, Knussen's miniatures are highly lyrical. The UK premiere of Jordan-born Haddad's mini-concerto for two cellos and ensemble completes the programme.

Followed by a chance to hear highlights from a Cardiff Singer of the World Masterclass given last week by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Minds at War: Series 2

Parade

The long-running series in which scholars, writers and critics explore the impact of the First World War on individual artists through a single work of art.

4.The distinguished art critic, Richard Cork, discusses Pablo Picasso's designs for the Ballets Russes production, Parade, which premiered in Paris in 1917, with music by Erik Satie and a one-act scenario by Jean Cocteau.

Picasso's sets and costumes for Parade are now considered key works, representative of the tumultuous era in which they were produced. At the onset of war, Picasso had left France and moved to Rome, where the Ballets Russes rehearsed. He soon met the ballerina Olga Khokhlova, and married her in 1918, so these were years of personal change as well as artistic.

Although the ballet took time to gain critical response, its originality was recognised by some at the time. Guillaume Apollinaire, who wrote the programme notes for Parade, described Picasso's designs as "a kind of surrealism" (une sorte de surréalisme) three years before Surrealism developed as an art movement in Paris, partly as a response to the war.

Producer: Beaty Rubens.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b05zhbgs)
Minds at War: Series 2

Akhmatova's July 1914

The poet and translator Sasha Dugdale explores the impact of the First War on the great Russian poet, Anna Akhmatova.

Her focus is on the collection, White Flock, published in 1917, but written during the war. In many poems, Akhmatova mentions the war directly, and in others, echoes of loss and war sound, refracted through peculiarly Russian folk imagery.

Sasha focuses on a two-part poem called 'July 1914'. In the first stanza, the turf has been burning for four weeks and the dry summer smells of smoke and fumes. The birds aren't singing and the aspen isn't moving. A one-legged wanderer comes to the house with terrible prophecies and predicts that 'soon there won't be room for all the fresh graves'. In the second part, the juniper's sweet smell rises from the burning wood and the widow's cry sounds. Instead of water and the rain they have prayed for, a warm red wetness floods the trampled fields.

Sasha's powerful Essay includes a new translation of the poem and a poignant account of how some of its motifs are now reappearing in contemporary writing about the war in Ukraine.
