The Scrapbook: Memoirs of a Forensic Investigator

Jack Sturiano is no stranger to death.

Originally from the USA, Jack served in the Vietnam War as a medic, treating soldiers and Vietnamese villagers alike, sometimes under enemy fire. After the war he became a Forensic Investigator. The FI is called out to fatal accidents, suicides and any unexplained death to pronounce the victim dead and to check there is nothing suspicious. Jack calls himself a modern day Charon and has witnessed thousands of scenes of tragedy, or stupidity, or plain bad luck.

Many times when driving to an accident late at night Jack would play a CD of his favourite movie, Taxi Driver, which starred Robert De Niro as a Vietnam Veteran who didn't adjust particularly well to life after the war.

Jack got fed up living in the USA and now lives in Ypres, Belgium. Producer Matt Thompson travelled to Ypres to record Jack and a selection of his self-published stories for 'The Empath'.

What is a life like spent in the company of the dead?

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b05wynm1)
Left-Handed Liberty

Theatre critic Andrew Dickson hears about one of the more provocative attempts to commemorate Magna Carta's 750th anniversary and the radical theatre culture of 1965.

One of the forgotten stories of Magna Carta is the City of London's attempts at commemoration in 1965. Left-Handed Liberty, written by the Marxist playwright John Arden and performed, in front of the Queen at the Mermaid Theatre, caused consternation among its commissioners in the City. They had not fully realised Arden's leanings and view of the monarchy! Arden was given free rein and instead of creating a cultural theatrical appreciation of Magna Carta he decided to focus on the Charter's failure.

Andrew Dickson pieces together the haphazard commissioning of the play and its staging at the Mermaid. And he reassesses Arden, nicknamed Britain's Berthold Brecht, and a key figure in the radical theatrical culture of 1965, a year of shock and surprise with Edward Bond's notoriously violent Saved, and John Osborne's controversial and provocative A Patriot for Me.

Producer Neil McCarthy.

SUN 22:00 Drama on 3 (b03th7fk)
Head Hunters

By Michael Eaton. In the early years of the twentieth century, the man generally credited with being the founding father of the new science of anthropology was James George Frazer, author of 'The Golden Bough'. Whereas Frazer rarely left his Cambridge study, it was Alfred Cort Haddon who led the first anthropological field-work expeditions, and in 1898 Haddon became the first anthropologist to film a re-enactment of an initiation rite on Mer, an island in the Torres Strait. Nearly twenty years later he signed up to work as a YMCA volunteer just a few miles from the trenches on the Western Front, and it was there that he re-met one of the members of his Mer team, now working on a study of the psychological impact of modern warfare on soldiers - 'shell shock'.

Michael Eaton

Writer and director Michael Eaton studied anthropology at Cambridge and in 2010 made a film 'The Masks of Mer' about the unique film shot in the Torres Straits by Alfred Haddon in 1898 lasting for less than a minute and the world's first example of anthropological cinema. 'The Masks of Mer' tells the extraordinary story of this experiment and traces the masks worn in the sacred initiation ceremony Haddon filmed. As a writer he is best known for his investigatory dramas for television, which include 'Shipman' and 'Shoot to Kill'.

Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967)

A Maverick

This week Donald Macleod surveys the life and work of one of Hungary's greatest musicians - Zoltán Kodály. As composer, educationalist, musicologist, scholar, and passionate champion of indigenous folk music, Kodály worked tirelessly throughout his life in the service of music making. Born in rural Hungary at a time when the railways were still a relatively new presence in the landscape, Kodály lived his life in the face of a storm of technical, cultural, and political change. A near contemporary of Béla Bartók, with whom he became collaborator and lifelong friend, Kodály devoted his own artistry to the service of his nation and its people, developing radical techniques for teaching music to children. Donald Macleod is joined by Kodály scholar and teacher David Vinden to discuss Kodály's life and legacy, and to enjoy some of his vividly evocative music.

Keith Tippett Octet in Session

British pianist and composer Keith Tippett performs his piece The Nine Dances Of Patrick O'Gonogon in session with his octet, also featuring guest vocalist Julie Tippetts.

Over the past 40 years Keith Tippett has forged a path as one of the most important figures of the European scene. In the early 70s his big band Centipede did much to fuse the worlds of rock and jazz (as did his work with prog group King Crimson), whilst his time with exiled South African musicians Harry Miller and Louis Moholo permanently changed the sound of British free music. Today Tippett's presence as a composer and pianist continues to resonate. Here in a special session for Jazz on 3 he performs The Nine Dances Of Patrick O'Gonogon - his latest suite, inspired by his own Irish heritage.

Joining him in the studio are musicians from a younger generation, including Fulvio Sigurta on trumpet and flugel horn, Sam Mayne and James Gardiner-Bateman on reeds, Richard Foote and Rob Harvey on trombones and bassist Tom McCredie, whilst Tippett's longstanding comrade Peter Fairclough completes the line-up on drums and percussion.

Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967)

Wanderlust

Zoltán Kodály's early life took him from rural Hungary to Budapest, then on to the glamour of 1900s Berlin and Paris. Donald Macleod traces the course of the journey.

A sense of happy adventure seems to have characterised the early life of Zoltán Kodály. Born into an idyllic childhood in rural Hungary, he claimed to have learnt to sing before he could talk. At 16 he left home for university in Budapest, where he met the woman who would become his wife and the man who would become his lifelong friend, Béla Bartók. Together Kodály and Bartók were in the vanguard of a new breed - musicologists - as they set out into the depths of the Hungarian countryside capturing for posterity the sounds of the folk music they heard. Kodály's adventures continued with study visits to Berlin, where he encountered the brilliance of the Joachim String Quartet, and to Paris, where the music of Debussy made an indelible impression. In conversation with Kodály expert David Vinden, Donald Macleod looks at the formative years of this unique and maverick composer.

Episode 2

Katie Derham continues a week featuring the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra who, to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Erik Chisholm, recently gave the first performance for more than 60 years of the Glasgow-born composer's Violin Concerto. Last heard at the 1952 Edinburgh Festival, it's a tour-de-force for both soloist and orchestra, richly coloured by the composer's deep interest in Indian classical music. Around this, two works strongly associated with Chisholm who conducted the British premiere of Mozart's opera Idomeneo with the Glasgow Grand Opera Society in 1934, from which we'll hear the exquisite ballet music, and Bartok's second orchestral suite. Chisholm befriended Bartok, bringing him to Glasgow twice to perform recitals of his music, and Chisholm was described as a 'Scottish Bartok' because of his use of folk idioms in his music. Plus Mozart's Fourth Horn Concerto with soloist Richard Watkins, and a selection from Mahler's song cycle Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the mezzo-soprano Alice Coote.

Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967)

A Folk Hero

Few composers have championed their nation's folk music as passionately as Zoltán Kodály. Talking to scholar David Vinden, Donald Macleod picks out some gems.

"Real art is one of the most powerful forces in the rise of mankind, and he who renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a true benefactor of humanity." So said Hungarian composer, Zoltán Kodály. As a young man growing up in the early years of the twentieth century, he identified, with almost religious zeal, his duty to celebrate the folk music of his native country. Kodály captured it on primitive recording devices, transcribed it, and arranged it for children's choirs; but perhaps even more importantly, elevated it to the status of concert hall art music. In doing so, particularly in the years following the first world war when Hungary was economically decimated, Kodály played a vital role in helping a nation to rebuild itself in the wake of a devastating conflict.

Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967)

The Internationalist

In the 1930's, Kodály's reputation reached the international stage. Donald Macleod reflects on how Kodály's music captured the European imagination.

Although there are few composers whose work is located so securely within the indigenous folk culture of their homelands, Zoltán Kodály was, by the late 1920s, building himself a formidable international reputation. By now in his 40s, he had had successful premieres across Europe, and was in dialogue with colossally influential figures such as Arturo Toscanini. His difficulties with the Hungarian authorities were long behind him and, buoyed by a new publishing deal, he was at the height of his powers - responding to commissions with exciting new compositions, and able to travel Europe as a champion of Hungarian music.

The words of Zoltán Kodály: a composer whose commitment to the celebration of his nation's culture, and the education of his nation's children, was virtually unparalleled. In the closing programme of this week's series, Donald Macleod talks to Kodály scholar and teacher David Vinden about Kodály's role as a music educationalist, and about how his much fêted teaching 'method' works.

LIVE from Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff - simulcast with Radio Cymru and Radio Wales, presented by Nicola Heywood-Thomas

It will happen at Hoddinott Hall, Wales Millennium Centre, and Y Wladfa in Patagonia, to the accompaniment of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (conductor - John Quirk), and will be a live broadcast on BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio 3, simultaneously.

The song in question will be the Welsh hymn Calon Lan, with the first and second verses being sung as a duet between Shan Cothi in Cardiff and Andres Evans in Patagonia (7000+ miles away). So as well as celebrating the first ever BBC Music Day, we will also be part of the ongoing, year-long celebrations, noting 150 years since the first Welsh settlers left for Patagonia.

The first and second chorus, along with the third verse and repeated chorus at the end will be sung by a choir in Patagonia (Cor Ysgol Gerdd y Gaiman), and an inter-generational composite choir in Hoddinott Hall. The composite choir in Cardiff will be made up of the in-house Radio Cymru choir, members of the BBC NOW Chorus, members of the BBC Choir of the Year - Cor CF1, and Wales Millennium Centre/Only Kids Aloud Chorus (conducted by the Music Day ambassador - Tim Rhys Evans).
