Ian Skelly presents Radio 3's classical breakfast show, featuring listener requests.
In a new mini-series Rob Cowan looks at works by composers who composed just one symphony, starting with Cherubini, and he explores music of lamentation and celebration. Mozart's Piano Sonata No 5 in G Major, K283, is played by Peter Katin and there's this week's Sunday Supplement suggested by a listener. We also remember Israel Yinon, who died this week, with three pieces for string orchestra by Pavel Haas.
Rory Kinnear is in danger of becoming a national treasure. Audiences across the world know him thanks to two Bond movies, where he plays M15 officer Bill Tanner. He was the journalist in the TV thriller Southcliffe, he was Denis Thatcher in the Margaret Thatcher TV biopic, he's the straight man to Count Arthur Strong... And he's established a reputation as one of our finest Shakespearean actors - his performance as Hamlet at the National Theatre was screened across the UK as part of the National's 50th anniversary celebrations. This summer he played an unforgettably chilling Iago to Adrian Lester's Othello, again at the National. And he's just turned playwright - his first play, The Herd, directed by Howard Davies, has opened in London.
He's a difficult actor to pin down. But in conversation with Michael Berkeley he reveals the man behind the theatrical mask. He talks movingly about his father, the actor Roy Kinnear, who was killed during a film stunt, and how he kept sane after the accident by playing the piano. Rory still plays in rehearsal rooms across the world, grabbing his chance at the piano while the other actors eat lunch. He reveals too that music is the key to his relationship with his sister, who was born with profound disabilities; Rory composes music for her, and plays songs as a way of communicating with her. He works increasingly with musicians, at the Proms last year, and in recordings. And, be warned, every morning he walks across London listening to music on his huge headphones - and singing along at the top of his voice.
Music choices include Mark Padmore singing Bach, Haydn's Trumpet Concerto, a Beethoven violin sonata, Erroll Garner, and Big Rock Candy Mountain.
Russian-German pianist and former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Igor Levit performs an all-Tchaikovsky's programme.
Lucie Skeaping looks at the life and music of the Viennese composer Georg Christoph Wagenseil. Although today he's largely relegated to the footnotes of musical history, in his day he was internationally admired, not least in the Mozart household. His tercentenary year gives cause for a fresh look at this founding father of the Viennese Classical style.
An Archive Recording of a Service for Epiphany, first broadcast in January 2009 from All Hallows' Church, Gospel Oak, London with the Choir of King's College, London, directed by David Trendell who died last October.
Exploring a rather unusual area in the choral world, this week Sara Mohr-Pietsch delves into music composed for choir and solo cello. Plus, another of Sara's 'Choral Classics', this week from the English Renaissance composer William Byrd, his Mass for Four Voices. Also this week, Sara speaks to the composer Cecilia McDowall about her favourite choral music.
Anna Chancellor and Malcolm Storry read from literary names including Edith Wharton, Franz Kafka, D. H. Lawrence, P. G. Wodehouse and John Buchan who all published in 1915. For some the war is a vital subject, for others, it's a background presence - and for many, their work shows no hint of the conflict unfolding in Europe and beyond. The music includes Delius, Barber, Bessie Smith and an archive recording of Elgar conducting his own work Polonia Op 76.
This is a story of loot, revenge and devastated beauty that still looms over British-Chinese relations. The imperial summer palace in Beijing was an extraordinary collection of beautiful architecture, landscapes and precious art. It was looted by invading French and British troops in 1860. Then the British commander, Lord Elgin, ordered its complete destruction. It was a dramatic moment of 'national humiliation' every Chinese schoolchild learns about today, encouraged by the communist government. Chris Bowlby discovers why it happened, with a surprising personal twist along the way. There's a rare interview with the current Lord Elgin on his family's controversial role in imperial history. And what about all the looted art? We hear how it still sits in British museums, or re-emerges in lucrative auctions - while angry Chinese voices, including the martial arts star Jackie Chan, demand its return.
Live from London's Barbican Hall, rising German conductor David Afkham conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto (with soloist Nicholas Angelich) and Brahms's Second Symphony.
Born in 1983 in Freiburg, rising German conductor David Afkham was mentored in his early career by Bernard Haitink, and won the 2008 Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, as a result of which he became Assistant Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra for two years. He has since worked with many leading orchestras in Europe and the USA, conducted Verdi's La traviata at the Glyndebourne Festival last summer, and has recently been appointed Principal Conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra.
A starry cast in George Bernard Shaw's dazzling romantic comedy from 1897, in a production directed by Martin Jarvis. The play follows a battle of the sexes beside the seaside, with marital mayhem and social strategy.
Mrs Clandon (Rosalind Ayres) celebrated New Woman, returns to England from Madeira, with her three grown children. In Torbay they meet Valentine (Jamie Bamber), an impecunious dentist. The offspring know nothing of their father, but they'll need one in British polite society. Valentine introduces the Clandons to his landlord, Mr Crampton (Christopher Neame.) Guess who he turns out to be?
Valentine is besotted by gorgeous Gloria Clandon (Sophie Winkleman). But in accepting him it's clear who'll be wearing the Shavian trousers. Matters are resolved by old William-the-waiter (Ian Ogilvy), his QC son (Julian Holloway) and cynical solicitor (Adam Godley.) Gloria's feisty twin siblings (Moira Quirk and Matthew Wolf) satirise everybody and it's barrister Bohun whom Gloria allows to have the first dance. As the waiter remarks: 'You never can tell, sir.' Richard Sisson's piano arrangements reflect the sea-breezy emotions of these engaging characters.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Turning Point
At the end of 1822, the 25-year-old Viennese composer Franz Schubert discovered he was suffering from a disease for which there was no known cure. He had just six years left to live but in that time he wrote some of his greatest masterpieces. Donald Macleod introduces some of the remarkable works from those years beginning with a piano sonata containing some of Schubert's most sombre music to date and, by way of complete contrast, his genial and ever-popular Octet.

Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann
The poet Hoffmann is in a tavern waiting for his love, Stella to return from singing the star role in an opera. He tells the stories of his past three loves, all of which have ended in disaster; the mechanical doll Olympia who gets ripped apart, Antonia who sings herself to death, and the courtesan Giulietta who steals Hoffmann's reflection. When Stella finally arrives, Hoffmann is drunk and she leaves with Lindorf, Hoffmann's rival for her affections.
Vittorio Grigolo sings the tortured poet, and the three heroines are played by Erin Morley, Hibla Gerzmava and Christine Rice. Thomas Hampson sings the Four Villains, and Yves Abel conducts Offenbach's sparkling score.

Deborah Levy on Hampstead Heath
Novelist Deborah Levy records a walk on London's Hampstead Heath under layers of snow. She also has time to tell us about a tin of crabmeat. Russian crabmeat...
The wonders of winter are best observed on foot. So five writers were asked to go walking whilst the landscape was still transformed by the cold. Deborah Levy, Christopher Hope, Scarlett Thomas, Erica Wagner and Owen Sheers all headed out to different places, and then reported back about their journeys and the actual activity of walking. What did it mean to them?
Producer Duncan Minshull.
MON 23:00 Jazz on 3 (b050xkb1)
Enlightenment (In the Spirit of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane)
The Enlightenment Ensemble perform a re-envisioning of John Coltrane's classic album A Love Supreme.
Fifty years since its original release, A Love Supreme remains one of the most celebrated and sacred works in the jazz canon. To mark its anniversary at the 2014 Meltdown Festival, British flautist and composer Rowland Sutherland took on the challenge to write a new arrangement for the 14-piece Enlightenment Ensemble, directed by Black Top's Orphy Robinson. Their performance draws on Coltrane's global spirit, channelling ideas from different cultural and musical backgrounds - with voices, kora and bata drums integrated alongside Robinson's xylosynth and traditional jazz instrumentation. Among the line-up, saxophonist Steve Williamson delivers stunning Coltrane-esque bursts on the tenor, bass clarinettist Shabaka Hutchings provides some of the set's standout solos while drummer Mark Mondesir grooves ferociously. It's at once a joyous homage and an inventive exploration of new territory.
Presenter: Jez Nelson
Producer: Miranda Hinkley.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Death and the Maiden
Schubert never married but during his short life fell in love with several, mostly unattainable, women. In the summer of 1824 Schubert formed a passion bordering on the obsessive for Caroline Esterhazy who was thought to be the inspiration behind all Schubert's future works. The following year it was the spectacular scenery of Upper Austria which formed the creative impulse behind what came to be regarded as his greatest symphonic achievement. Donald Macleod introduces part of the symphony, plus a song-setting of words by the hugely popular Scottish novelist of the day - Sir Walter Scott, a set of variations for piano duo written for Caroline Esterhazy and the turbulent final movement from one of his best-loved quartets, written at a time of deep depression.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Recognition
Throughout his career, Schubert was keen for his talents to be recognised by the influential Viennese music society, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. By 1825 Schubert's vocal quartets and lighter piano music were increasingly performed at their Thursday chamber concerts and he was elected one of the twenty 'deputies' of the committee of the Society. There was little public appetite for Schubert's more serious chamber music however and he had great difficulty getting any of it published. Donald Macleod introduces one of the sonatas Schubert finally saw into print in 1827, regarded by Schumann as Schubert's 'most perfect work, both in form and conception' plus some settings of verses by a budding young poet and the last of his three great string quartets.

BBC SSO - Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Glazunov
Live from City Halls, Glasgow
Presented by Ian Skelly
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its Principal Guest Conductor, Ilan Volkov, give a concert of some rare Russian gems. They perform a suite of Shostakovich's music from the 1971 film based on King Lear directed by Grigori Kozintsev. The orchestra is joined by Yuri Vorobiev to perform an orchestral arrangement of Mussorgsky's dark and brooding song-cycle, Songs and Dances of Death.
And the concert concludes with a key work by a hugely influential figure in the fin de siècle Russian music world: Glazunov. His 'The Seasons' is a 1-act ballet first performed at the St Petersburg Imperial Ballet in 1900. Full of the magic and sparkle of Russian theatre music, it captures, in its deftly orchestrated music, the changing atmospheres of the Russian landscapes as winter passes to autumn.

Greece, Daniel Evans on Sarah Kane, Indian Summers
Anne McElvoy assesses reports that members of the new Greek government are rediscovering age-old links between Greece and Russia. As SYRIZA seeks to renegotiate the terms of the Greek national debt to the European Central Bank, could Ministers look beyond the borders of the EU for support? With Roderic Lyne, former British ambassador to Moscow; Mary Dejevsky, leader writer for The Independent and veteran Kremlin watcher; Professor Vassilis Fouskas, economic historian at the University of East London; and Spyros Economides is Associate Professor of International Relations and European Politics at the London School of Economics.
Plus as Sheffield Theatres begin a season looking back at the work of Sarah Kane, Director Daniel Evans discusses her writing with Anne McElvoy; also a review of Indian Summers - Channel 4's new costume drama about the end of colonial rule.
The Sarah Kane Season runs at Sheffield Theatres until Mid March.
Indian Summers screens on Channel 4 for 10 weeks beginning on Sunday February 15th at

Winterwalks
Erica Wagner
Author and critic Erica Wagner recalls a journey that happens at midnight, taking in a hill, a castle and biting winds. But it's really about couples walking together. How do they respond?
The wonders of winter are best observed on foot. So five writers were asked to go walking whilst the landscape is still transformed by the cold. Deborah Levy, Christopher Hope, Scarlett Thomas, Erica Wagner and Owen Sheers all headed out to different places, and then reported back about their journeys and the actual activity of walking. What did it mean to them?

A selection of music including '5 Reasons to Love... Beecham Lollipops'. Throughout the week Sarah offers a selection of the British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham's lighter pieces which he offered as encores; pieces such as Berlioz's Ballet des Sylphes and Saint-Saëns's Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, which he felt had more to offer than many other larger scale 'serious' classical works.

Take part in our daily musical challenge: listen to three musical extracts, try and find a connection and see if you can suggest the missing fourth.

Sarah's guest this week is Stuart Maconie. Sophie Bevan (soprano)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Ryan Wigglesworth (conductor)
Ryan Wigglesworth is one of the UK's most exciting young composer-conductors. Praised for 'his conjurer's ability to cast a spell', his iridescent music is intricately woven, with a strongly lyric impetus.
Orchestral manoeuvres of a different kind are to be found in the mischievous Mauricio Kagel's Studies (1992-6), where by witty sleights-of-hand the music turns on a dime from charm to snarling menace.
Between the two, one of our brightest young sopranos, Sophie Bevan, joins the orchestra to sing Strauss's voluptuous songs. 'Bevan is pure sunshine: like the legendary Elisabeth Schumann, she sings for joy.' (Daily Telegraph)
The concert ends with Schumann's great Third Symphony.

Lopa Kothari - Quarteto Fuego in Session, BBC Introducing
Lopa Kothari with tracks from across the globe, plus a live session with Argentina's Quarteto Fuego and Jesus Hidalgo, plus BBC Introducing comes to World on 3.
Quarteto Fuego, Argentina's 'Fire Quartet', consists of four young players bringing a contemporary approach to tango - bandoneon player Clemente Carrascal, violinist Christine Brebes, pianist Matias Feigin and bass player Facundo Benavidez. Singer Jesus Hildago has become something of a national icon in Argentina, having sung a version of their national anthem with Mercedes Sosa in 2008. They are currently performing with the Tango Fire Company at the Peacock Theatre in London.
BBC Introducing, the BBC's new talent scheme which gives undiscovered and unsigned music artists a platform, will for the first time feature world music in 2015, through working with World on 3. Lopa Kothari writes:
"Are you a brilliant Turkish saz player living in London? Or maybe a fine traditional Sufi singer in Birmingham? Perhaps you have a whole new take on folk roots music? You might be famous in your own community, but how do you get heard beyond that? The answer could be the BBC Introducing Uploader. Since 2007 BBC Introducing has done a great job of picking up and promoting new talent across the UK, well supported by both BBC local and BBC network stations. But not all music fits into the music policy of the national stations. So this is where World on 3 comes in. The World on 3 team will listen to every submission. If we like what you upload, you could hear it being played on the programme. We might even ask you to come in and play live on air. And who knows, there may be a chance to play on the BBC stage at Womad, the most prestigious world music festival around.
If BBC Introducing had been around in my day this is just the thing that would have given me and my band a chance to be heard across the UK and who knows maybe all over the World! So, go on, upload your stuff to BBC Introducing and open up your music to a whole new world of possibilities.".
