Crime writer John Harvey has no shortage of fans. His prize-winning books have sold over a million copies and have been translated and published all over the world. His Nottingham detective Charlie Resnick is now so well known – after 12 novels, two television adaptations and four radio plays – that he seems like a real person: a brooding solitary sensitive man who has a passion for ... listening to jazz. And this is where the fans come in. Because for years now they have been sending Harvey compilation tapes of the kind of jazz tracks that they think Resnick would enjoy. So no surprise to discover that his creator John Harvey has a lifelong love of jazz, conceived during a misspent youth in London jazz clubs.
As part of the jazz season across Radio 2 and 3, with highlights from the London Jazz Festival, John Harvey chooses his favourite jazz tracks. The playlist includes early Billie Holliday, Thelonius Monk, James P. Johnson and Chet Baker. Harvey, who’s a fine poet as well as a crime writer, reads a moving poem about Chet Baker’s mysterious death. Other music choices include Shostakovich, Mendelssohn’s ‘Hebrides Overture’, and a Tango for corrugated iron by Jocelyn Pook.
Harvey reveals that he dislikes how crime fiction has changed during the 25 years he’s been writing it: ‘There almost seems to be a competition who can have the most disgusting things in their books, and what awful things you can do particularly to female victims.’ And he talks about his decision to retire his detective Resnick, leaving him sitting on a park bench, ‘hankering after a fresh helping of Thelonius Monk`.

Words and Music celebrates the great capital city with music and texts read by two distinguished London-born actors, Dame Eileen Atkins and Sir David Jason.
In many ways a city of contradictions, Words and Music celebrates the Thames, the church bells, the parks and the architecture, along with the less salubrious side of the city - the overcrowding, the noise and the stench which Londoners have complained about for centuries. We view London through the eyes of its chroniclers such as Daniel Defoe and John Evelyn, along with eminent visitors to the city such as Handel and Haydn. There are also references to key events in London's history - the Fire, the Plague, the Blitz, and the terror of Jack the Ripper. Above all, there is a sense of the love of the city from the writings of authors and poets who lived there, including Charles Dickens, George Orwell, T.S. Eliot and John Keats.
London has inspired many composers, and the readings are accompanied by music by Vaughan Williams, Walton, Britten, Haydn and Elgar.
Christopher Harding explores the influence of Freud on psychotherapy in Japan and India. Freud's travels around Europe and the USA a century ago catapulted psychotherapy to fame.
The invitations to Japan and India came too late for him to travel but he found his work debated throughout Asia. In India he was discussed by British colonial officers, who penned amateur tracts about Indian nationalism as mere sexual trauma.
Thousands of miles further east in Tokyo, Freud was partnered with a medieval Buddhist saint in the hybrid psychoanalytic technique of Heisaku Kosawa. Mishima read and was influenced by his work. Christopher Harding explores the spread of Freud's influence and its significance.
John Gallagher focuses on the history of a long-overlooked form of literature: the foreign language phrase book. The British often assume that most people we meet abroad will speak English - and many of them do.
This was not the case three or four centuries ago, when the Grand Tour became a rite of passage and an increasing number of entrepreneurs forged trade links across Europe and beyond. At that time English was a minority language.
Phrase books and travel guides of the time reveal the preoccupations of the day and, in the varied dialogues and phrases they offered, reflect the needs of a variety of travellers, be they tourists keen to visit the art of Italy or the salons of Paris, merchants seeking to make deals in Dutch marketplaces, or spies intent on learning the secrets of continental powers.

Big Band
Pioneers
During the London Jazz Festival this week Donald Macleod is joined by jazz trumpeter, composer and conductor Guy Barker to look at the story of Big Band Jazz. From pioneers like Fletcher Henderson, the superstars of swing Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, to Dizzy Gillespie and Gil Evans, they explore the development of the art of arranging for big band from the 1920s onwards, and the contributions of the key figures involved over the decades.
In the first programme this week Donald Macleod looks at the pioneers of the big band sound, including Fletcher Henderson and Paul Whiteman, with the help of Guy Barker. While Henderson helped to establish the model for big band arranging for the next two decades, Whiteman created a show band and aimed to take jazz into the concert halls.

Saxophonist Branford Marsalis's quartet is one of the most revered and long-established ensembles in contemporary jazz. Growing up in New Orleans as part of the Marsalis dynasty that includes his pianist father Ellis and trumpeter brother Wynton, Branford's music communicates a deep reverence for the jazz tradition while also reflecting a career that has taken in funk, R&B and performances as a classical soloist. With only one change in personnel in over a decade, his quartet has an almost telepathic sense of interplay and an intense, adventurous spirit. Marsalis is joined by Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and drummer Evan Sherman in this performance recorded at the 2014 EFG London Jazz Festival, presented by Jez Nelson.

They explore the work of the superstars of the day, as well as that of less well-known arrangers and bandleaders who were to have a huge influence on the future sound of big bands.

Knowing Your Characters: David Greig and Siobhan Redmond in Conversation
Matthew Sweet talks to playwright David Greig and actor Siobhan Redmond about their approaches to drama. How much do you have to know about the characters and the story before you begin? How has theatre contributed to the recent discussions about Scottish identity ?
David Greig, the National Theatre of Scotland's first Dramaturg, is one of our leading playwrights whose work has been produced around the world, including Dunsinane, his sequel to Macbeth, The Events, written after the Breivik massacre in Norway; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and his Yes/No plays on Twitter before the Scottish referendum.
Siobhan Redmond has worked in theatre, television and radio including work for the RSC, National Theatre of Scotland and Renaissance
Theatre Company. She played the role of Gruach (Lady Macbeth) in Greig's Dunsinane.

BBC SSO - Sibelius, MacMillan, Shostakovich
Live from City Halls Glasgow
Presented by Jamie MacDougall
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra welcomes back long-time collaborator Martyn Brabbins to conduct a concert of darkness and light.
At the core of this evening's programme is James MacMillan's Piano Concerto No. 3. The orchestra is joined by Peter Donohoe to perform 'The Mysteries of Light', the composer re-imagining the rituals of his strongly-held religious faith through the musical structure of this 'quasi-dramatic' meditation.
MacMillan talks about a concept not far from a concerto tone-poem, while the concert opens with Sibelius' orchestral tone-poem rooted in tale-telling: his work En Saga.
And the evening ends with a symphonic testament to a troubled life and a dark-clouded period in Russian history. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, written by a composer contending with artistic censorship and political oppression, features some of his most strongly characterised music and builds to a grand, if ambiguous, climax.

Jodie Ginsburg is the Chief Executive of Index on Censorship and former London bureau chief for Reuters.
Dr Rufus Pollock is Founder and President of Open Knowledge, an international non profit organisation which promotes making data and information accessible.
Kenneth Cukier is Data Editor for The Economist magazine.
From advocates of open source who claim that information should be set free from to new economic models that purport to place cooperation over competition, the discussion looks at what these changes mean and how they ripple out to affect our behaviour offline as well as on - disrupting notions of ownership and originality.
Recorded in front of an audience at BBC Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival of Ideas at Sage Gateshead. The festival theme this year was the limits of knowledge.
All the discussions and essays from the Free Thinking festival are available as Radio 3 Arts and Ideas downloads.
