BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert: La Stagione Frankfurt: Works by Vivaldi, JS Bach and Telemann
The orchestra La Stagione Frankfurt is considered one of the most successful ensembles in the field of authentic music performance. Over the years, as well as performing music by well known Baroque composers, they have focused on lesser known musical gems by composers such as Franz Beck, Stradella, Alessandro Scarlatti, Holzbauer and the sons of Bach. This concert was recorded last year as part of the Concertgebouw Sunday Morning series and includes music by Vivaldi, JS Bach and Telemann.
The young Classical guitarist Milos Karadaglic has topped the classical music charts around the world, and has been compared to the legendary John Williams and Julian Bream. He presents a personal choice of music that has inspired him, and describes how his musical tastes dramatically expanded when he left his native Macedonia to study in London. Milos chooses not only music for guitar but a wide range of classical music, including the Russian greats Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich.
Matthew Sweet introduces a selection of film music in homage to the late Richard Attenborough. Matthew's guest is the composer George Fenton who collaborated with Attenborough on many films: "Gandhi"; "Cry Freedom"; "Shadowlands"; "In Love and War"; "Grey Owl". The programme also features music from "The League of Gentlemen"; "Sea of Sand"; "The Great Escape"; "Seance on a Wet Afternoon"; "Whistle Down The Wind"; "Jurassic Park"; and "Closing The Ring".
The late Kenny Wheeler, Canadian born but a cornerstone of British jazz since the 1950s, died last month. Listeners recall many aspects of his work, plus music from the Modern Jazz Quartet, Kenny Baker's Dozen and vibraphonist Teddy Charles.
Julian Joseph presents a collaborative concert set featuring BBC Radio 3's New Generation Jazz Artist Trish Clowes and vocalist Norma Winstone recorded at Kings Place, London. Since studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Iain Ballamy and Pete Churchill, Trish has worked with a range of artists including pianist Gwilym Simcock, guitarist Mike Walker and drummer Martin France. In tonight's concert set she unveils new music as part of her 'Under Your Wing' project featuring Norma Winstone. The concert also includes arrangements for strings, featuring a quartet that previously worked with Clowes on 'Barbara Song' (London Jazz Festival 2012). The full line-up includes: Mike Walker electric guitar, Conor Chaplin bass, James Maddren drums, Thea Spiers violin, Catriona Parker violin, Adam Robinson viola, Louise McMonagle cello, Norma Winstone vocals and Trish Clowes on saxophones.

The Nash Ensemble, chamber group in residence at the Wigmore Hall, marks the month of its 50th anniversary with a delicious programme from a corner of the repertoire in which it has long specialised - French music from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Two favourite works - by Fauré and Ravel - are framed by chamber arrangements of Debussy's revolutionary orchestral masterpiece, and of Berlioz's nocturnal song-cycle, performed in a version by one of the many composers with whom the Nash has had a long relationship - David Matthews.
Ivan Hewett presents an 80th birthday tribute to one of today's leading composers, Bernard Rands. Once described as, 'a composer with a poet's sensibility and a painterly love of colour and line', Rands has for many years been resident in the USA. However, he was born in the UK in Sheffield so it is especially appropriate that tonight's recordings were made at the Royal Northern College of Music's celebration of his music held in June.
Rands has held teaching positions at many leading universities and music schools across the US and is himself a onetime pupil of Dallapiccola, Berio and Boulez. His brand of post-Impressionist elegance combined with rhythmic vigour has resulted in residencies with many of the United States' top orchestras. Rands says that he writes his music 'to be as honest and as deeply personal as I can', and this is evident in his 'Chains like the sea'. The work is inspired by a poem by Dylan Thomas, as Rands uses the sounds of bells to map out life, from birth to death.
And in Composers' Rooms, Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores the urban workspace which the composer Emily Hall shares with a community of other musicians and visual artists.

David Lan
David Lan is a huge force in theatre in Britain, indeed internationally. But how he got there is surprising. Brought up in Cape Town, he began his career as an anthropologist, living for two years in a remote area of Zimbabwe in order to study spirit magic. He went on to become a playwright and documentary director, and he's written the libretto for two operas. One critic recently described Lan as a 'Diaghilev-like figure' because of his flair for bringing artists together. As Artistic Director of the Young Vic, he led the £12.5m theatre rebuild - and has over the last 14 years established a reputation both for spotting new talent, and for persuading directors from all over the world to come to London to direct wildly inventive productions. His latest role, announced this year, is Consulting Artistic Director for the New York Arts Centre, which is still being built, on the site of the 9/11 attacks.
In Private Passions, David Lan talks about his upbringing in South Africa, and how he learnt to love music as a young boy in his grandmother's shop, which sold bicycles - and piles of old 78s. He describes his time as an anthropologist in Zimbabwe, living in a remote and dangerous part of the country just after the war of independence. And he pays tribute to the relationship at the heart of his life, with distinguished playwright Nicholas Wright, whom Lan met when he was only 17.
Music includes Beethoven, Shostakovich, Paul Simon, Nina Simone, a Bach Prelude played by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, and the overture to Mozart's Magic Flute - played on marimbas.

Lucie Skeaping introduces a programme of sacred choral music by the German composer Hans-Leo Hassler. The music was specially recorded for the programme by the BBC Singers, conducted by Andrew Griffiths.
Hassler was highly influenced by the two Gabrielis and by Orlando di Lassus. He wrote for both the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches, although he himself was a Protestant. As well as his music for the church, he also wrote a large quantity of secular music, including Italian madrigals in five or six voices, instrumental works and dance songs that are highly rhythmic.

The Full Montaigne
Jim Broadbent plays Michel de Montaigne, whose 'Essays' entertainingly ponder sex, marriage, animals, memory, and cruelty in an attempt to answer one question: 'How to live?' With music including Bach, Ligeti, Mendelssohn and Randy Newman.
Montaigne drew on a lifetime of experience and observation, but far from inscrutable musings, the Essays are often earthy and direct - at once scatological and astute, philosophical and witty, playful and profound.
The Essays were first published in 1580 and are positively Shakespearian, both in their range and in their humanism. Montaigne speaks as himself, directly and in clear prose, and says the most extraordinarily heretical things. Some of his arguments include the notion that human beings are on a par with the animals and that they are just a tiny part of Nature, all of which deserves equally to be respected and that death is just the end of life and it is life which is the important thing.
In 1676 the Vatican caught up with Montaigne the best part of a century after his death when the Essays were put on its index of prohibited books, where they stayed until 1854. The Essays have been continuously available for the last four and a half centuries not only because they are engaging and entertaining but also because of the spark of self-revelation they so often generate.
In this programme, seasoned Montaignistes will find themselves recognising an old friend, and those coming to the Essays for the first time will find a new one.

Rana Mitter travels to Beijing to explore the recent flourishing of theatre in China.
Through interviews with leading Chinese playwrights, directors and producers, he examines Chinese theatre's re-invention as an art-form of youthful, urban cool.
Drama has been a hugely important force in Chinese culture for centuries, but spoken word drama as western audiences understand it, only took root in the early 20th century. Released from the restrictions of the Cultural Revolution, the latest generation of theatre practitioners in China has breathed new life into Chinese theatre, led by the charismatic director and playwright Meng Jinghui (director of the cult hit Rhinoceros In Love, written by his wife, Liao Yimei - and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 later this evening).
Rana attempts to define this specifically Chinese version of experimental theatre - dubbed by academic Rossella Ferrari as 'pop avant-garde'.

Sibelius Symphony No 1
Today is the launch of a two-week survey of Sibelius's Symphonies performed by the BBC Philharmonic with conductor John Storgards, as part of Afternoon on 3's Nordic and Baltic season.
This week numbers 1 to 3 - Sibelius makes his name, and his career takes off in the early years of the twentieth century - these first three symphonies are bold and confident works.
Also running through the week are a series of works by French composer Gabriel Pierné. He succeeded César Franck as organist of St.Clotilde in Paris, and conducted the premiere of Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird" in Paris in 1910. His music is filled with the ambience of fin-de-siècle Paris. Pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet joins the BBC Philharmonic and Juanjo Mena in these recordings.

Rossini's Moses in Egypt
Christopher Cook presents Welsh National Opera's new production of Rossini's Moses in Egypt, given at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff. Although not as well known as the Barber of Seville, La Cenerentola, or William Tell, Moses in Egypt is among Rossini's greatest musical achievements. First heard in Naples in 1818, Rossini's telling of the Old Testament story pulls focus between the epic and the intimate, as the story of an entire people persecuted by a cruel tyrant is juxtaposed with the forbidden love of two young people on either side of a religious divide.
The Pharaoh refuses to free the Hebrews from slavery and allow them to leave for the Promised Land. Moses, with God's help, brings down plagues on the Egyptians until eventually he and his people are freed. But Pharaoh's son, Osiris, is in love with a Hebrew girl, Elcia, and he is punished when he attempts to have Moses killed.
The Hebrews reach the Red Sea and are rescued from the pursuing Egyptians by divine intervention.

Evan Parker 70th and John Butcher 60th Birthday Sessions
Jez Nelson presents solo sessions, especially recorded for Jazz on 3, from two of the UK's greatest living saxophonists: Evan Parker and John Butcher.
70 this year, Evan Parker has been at the heart of the British and international free-jazz scene for half a century. Working on both sides of the Atlantic in ensembles both large and small, his collaborations read like a roll call of improvised music's great and good: Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Derek Bailey, Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Kenny Wheeler, and recently, electronic artist Squarepusher. Yet he's best loved for his solo playing. 'One of the music's greatest living instrumentalists' according to The Times, Parker uses a range of complex techniques (circular breathing, split tonguing, overblowing, multiphonics, cross-pattern fingering) to create organic, immersive and hypnotic musical worlds.
2014 also sees John Butcher turn 60. Originally a physicist studying Quarks, Butcher left academia in the 1980s to form the London Improvising Ensemble with pianist Chris Burn, as well as a soprano saxophone quartet with Evan Parker. His solo playing explores electronic techniques like multi-tracking as well as the outer limits of feedback and extreme acoustics: "Some of the best bits come when you're playing near the edge of your control and knowledge. When the music's working, I think it creates its own connections and shapes that are more interesting than ones you might have tried to consciously impose."

A special visit to In Tune by violinist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forstyth who are on tour with Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa. On 29th October they head to Salisbury Cathedral to perform as part of a 10-concert tour of the UK. Their appearance in Salisbury is expected to be a highlight of the tour and commemorates the 30,000 Canadian troops who trained around Salisbury before serving on the Western Front during the First World War.

Landmark: Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu
Tonight's edition of Free Thinking is devoted to one of the landmarks of European literature -- Marcel Proust's gigantic novel, A la recherche du temps perdu which is perhaps best known in English as In Search of Lost Time.
Matthew Sweet gathers together four Proust fans from very different backgrounds - the Pulitzer prize winning novelist, Jane Smiley, the psychotherapist, Jane Haynes, Christopher Prendergast, who has edited the latest translation of the book and from France, the writer, Marie Darrieussecq. The actor Peter Marinker tackles the difficult task of giving an English voice to Proust.

The novel is a modernist masterpiece which offers a symphonic account of what it meant to be alive in France as the 19th century became the 20th. To read it is to explore the mechanics of human sensibility -- it is comic, tragic, discursive, scholarly, obscene, vicious and heartfelt but above all profoundly self aware. Sometimes it reads like a journal or a gossip column; sometimes like autobiography; from times like a scholarly monograph: and often as delicious parody; the coils of Proust's language slows time right down and tempts the reader ever further into the maze of self examination.
Human attachment lies at the heart of the book - whether it's a young boy's love of his grandmother, a grown man's obsessive sexual interest in a young woman or the self deceptions of narcissim. But these are just a few of the book's facets as the mind of its narrator moves from the marriage of his bourgeois family's neighbours in the country, the Swanns, to the glamour and snobbery of the aristocracy in Paris.

Singer Tracey Thorn describes how she as a rebellious teenager she seized on the feminist classic "The Female Eunuch" by Germaine Greer. "It seemed brand new, and it spoke to me of things I'd long thought and felt without ever having words or names for," she says. She explains how the book was a deep influence on the lyrics she wrote for her band Everything but the Girl. But now she is herself a mother, she finds herself questioning Greer's contemptuous dismissal of parenting. "As feminists, I feel we are more forgiving now than Greer was; more inclusive, less dismissive, and perhaps that's because greater freedoms have brought with them greater liberties for us to be so. It's not such a threat now to admit to being happily married and enjoying motherhood when we are not utterly constrained and defined by these roles."

Actor/director Simon McBurney of Theatre de Complicite describes how John Berger's "And Our Faces, My Heart, Brief as Photos" plays with ideas of connection, memory, narrative and mortality which are essential to his theatrical work. "Berger digs in the vulnerable earth of human experience, and joins the fragments he uncovers with an eye as sure as an astronomer, a gesture as gentle as a carpenter," McBurney says. This slim work has been a point of reference for his art and his life.

Rossini - Aureliano in Palmira
Today's Opera Matinee is by Rossini, his opera seria "Aureliano in Palmira" a historical tale of Love and War between the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (Aureliano), and Queen Zenobia of Palmyra, a city in Syria.
For such a rarity (Aureliano in Palmira was a flop at its first outing, never re-staged in Rossini's lifetime and disappearing almost without trace), a great deal of the music sounds familiar - very familiar in fact. From the Overture there is more than a nagging sense that you've heard this before somewhere and that is because Rossini re-cycled his forlorn historical drama into one of his comic masterpieces "The Barber of Seville" (which also flopped on its first outing, but history has been kinder to it). So the quality of the music is assured.
And the setting of the Rossini Festival Pesaro is the most sympathetic place to hear again this original score with the outstanding pairing of tenor Michael Spyres as the Roman emperor Aureliano and soprano Jessica Pratt as the Palmyran queen Zenobia.

Act 1
Act 1 begins in the temple in Palmyra. Queen Zenobia, her lover Arsace, Prince of Persia, and the citizens of Palmyra are praying for deliverance from the Romans, led by the emperor Marcus Aurelius (Aureliano), who are approaching the city gates.
Battle is joined outside the city and the Romans defeat the Palmyrans and capture Arsace, who declares his love for Zenobia to Aureliano. Zenobia tries to negotiate the release of her captured citizens, but Aureliano is adamant and prepares to enter Palmyra itself.
Zenobia prepares the city for one last desperate defence, knowing that her lover Arsace is already in the hands of Aureliano.

The concert begins with the orchestral interlude from Strauss's last opera Intermezzo, based on the composer's own domestic life and inspired by the light comedies of the 18th century.
Chopin's Second Piano Concerto is played by Sunwook Kim, who won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition in 2006, aged just 18. Beethoven's First Symphony is prefaced by Brett Dean's Testament; it was inspired by the Heiligenstadt Testament, the famous Last Will and Testament which Beethoven wrote when he realised that he was beginning to suffer from hearing problems.

Celebrated Canadian writer Margaret Atwood is the author of books including The Handmaid's Tale, Cat's Eye, her recent collection of stories Stone Mattress and The Blind Assassin, for which she was awarded the Booker prize in 2000.
She talks to Anne McElvoy about her interest in science fiction. The MaddAddam trilogy began with Oryx and Crake and continued six years later with The Year of the Flood. It's now being adapted for TV by HBO.

A door that could lead to a writing career of my own... this book and its author showed that it was possible for me to not only be an author but to have my own voice."

Now in its 16th year, the New Generation Artists scheme brings listeners the very best of emerging British and international talent. The NGAs are offered many opportunities to perform in chamber concerts and with the BBC orchestras; every day this week we hear the fruits of their work in the studio, in recordings made specially for Radio 3.
In this programme soprano Olena Tokar sings Mussorgky's song-cycle The Nursery, mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately performs songs by Barber, and pianists Zhang Zuo and Louis Schwizgebel combine for duets by Rachmaninov.

Sibelius Symphony No 3
The second act of Rossini's opera Aureliano in Palmira from this year's Pesaro Festival.
A real Rossini rarity, an opera seria that flopped but which Rossini then re-cycled into his comedy "The Barber of Seville" (which also flopped, but which posterity has been kinder to). There's no doubting the quality of the music, so it must all have been in the performance, because the plot is the usual confusion.
Reviews of this production singled out for praise tenor Michael Spyres (Aureliano) and soprano Jessica Pratt (Zenobia). The ensemble is led by the American bel canto specialist, Will Crutchfield.
And the BBC Philharmonic conclude this week's part of the Sibelius Symphony Cycle with No.3 in C . Numbers 4 to 7 next week.

Act 2
Palmyra has fallen to the Romans - led by Aureliano (Marcus Aurelius), and he generously offers the defeated queen Zenobia the choice to rule alongside him. Zenobia's lover Arsace, the general of the Palmyran army has escaped, but returns to the city to rescue his queen and lover. The pair are caught and brought before Aureliano who at first sentences them to spend the rest of their lives in separate prison cells, before relenting and - after they swear loyalty to Rome - letting the pair rule in Palmyra after all.

Sakari Oramo conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in music by Strauss, Sibelius & Stravinsky - his ballet score The Firebird. Javier Perianes joins for Grieg's great Piano Concerto.
Expect an explosion of colour and character with Strauss's vaulting portrait of the lothario Don Juan and the spangled exoticism of Stravinsky's fairy-tale ballet The Firebird. In between comes Sibelius's brooding, atmospheric tone-poem En Saga, which he said contained 'the whole of my youth'. He asked 'Can one think of anything other than Finland while listening to it?' The acclaimed young Spanish virtuoso Javier Perianes, described as 'a poet at the keyboard', joins Sakari Oramo in Grieg's famous concerto.

8.15pm Interval: The dark and brooding keyboard music of Manuel Blasco de Nebra - heir to the genius of Scarlatti, and a native of Spain from where the BBC Symphony Orchestra recently returned on tour with performer Javier Perianes - we hear the pianist here with the composer's Pastorela No. 6 in E minor. Plus choral music by Sibelius and his work Rakastava [The lover] Op.14, and the BBC Singers with Soprano Alison Smart and baritone Stephen Charlesworth.

Mary Ann Kennedy is in Santiago de Compostela in Spain for highlights from WOMEX, the annual gathering of the world music industry. WOMEX is a showcase for artists worldwide, and there are concert recordings, interviews and live sessions from the latest bands and the freshest talent in world music.
With concert performances from the Cesaria Evora Orchestra from Cape Verde, and Algeria's El Gusto Orchestra. There are also sessions from German Diaz, who performs new music on the hurdy-gurdy, Sakishima Meeting from Okinawa, and the Polish string enesmble Volosi.
