Inspired by Italian writer Italo Calvino's novel "Invisible Cities", this Between the Ears explores the hidden, fantastical and surreal stories caught between the cracks of the modern city.

With contributions from writers, urban explorers and mapmakers we explore the imaginative possibilities held within cities, their secret folds. How does the layout of a city's streets, underground passages and the glittering spires of its skyscrapers capture our desires, our fears and our memories?

From the ghosts contained in a cavernous lost property office deep underground to the view from the top of an abandoned warehouse - what impression does the structure of a city leave on its inhabitants?

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b01jg87b)
Carol Ann Duffy

Michael Berkeley welcomes the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, as his Private Passions. The first woman, the first Scot, and the first openly gay person to hold the post, she was appointed in 2009, having won many awards for her poetry collections since taking first prize in the National Poetry Competition in 1983. Most recently, 'Rapture' (2005) won the TS Eliot Prize, and her latest collection, 'The Bees', won the 2011 Costa Book Award for Poetry.

Born into a Roman Catholic family in the Gorbals, a poor area of Glasgow, Carol Ann developed a passionate love of literature at school, and for a decade from the age of 16 she lived with the Liverpool poet Adrian Henri. She had two plays performed at the Liverpool Playhouse and received an honours degree in phoilosophy from the University of Liverpool. In 1996 she was appointed a lecturer in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University and later became creative director of its Writing School. She was appointed Poet Laureate in 2009. Her work as laureate includes poems on the MPs' expenses scandal, the deaths of the last British servicemen who fought in World War I, David Beckham's tendon injury, and the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. Her poems, which explore everyday experience and a rich fantasy life, are on the school curriculum in the UK.

A keen music-lover, Carol Ann Duffy learnt the piano as a child. Her choices include Chopin's E major Etude Op.10 No.3, which her mother loved to hear her playing; extracts from Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' and and Christy Moore singing a song with words by W B Yeats. This edition, first broadcast in June 2012, is part of Radio 3's celebration of British music - Private Passions' guests this month are four poets from across the UK.

SUN 14:00 Sunday Concert (b01jg8lk)
Stephen Hough - Beethoven, Liszt, Scriabin

Presented by Louise Fryer.

In a specially recorded concert at Newbury Spring Festival, pianist Stephen Hough performs a programme of music exploring the sonata form. His starting point is arguably the best known and loved of them all: Beethoven's Sonata in C sharp minor Op 27 No 2 "Moonlight". The piece didn't gain its famous moniker until five years after Beethoven's death, when a critic likened the effect of the first movement to that of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne. Hough is a renowned polymath, in addition to his skills at the piano he writes, paints and composes. Alongside sonatas by Scriabin and Liszt, he will perform his own composition: Sonata for Piano "Broken Branches", which premiered last year.

Subsequently, it became less often heard, until the nineteenth century, when this ancient form of singing was revived by the monks of Solesmes Abbey in France. Since then different forms of chant have inspired a diverse range of composers including Holst, John Tavener and Roxanna Panufnik to draw on its melodic lines.

SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature (b01jg8nk)
Suspended in Air

"Were I to choose an auspicious image for the new millennium, I would choose [...] the sudden agile leap of the poet-philosopher who raises himself above the weight of the world, showing that with all his gravity he has the secret of lightness, and that what many consider to be the vitality of the times - noisy, aggressive, revving and roaring - belongs to the realm of death, like a cemetery for rusty old cars." - Italo Calvino

The neuroscientist and writer David Eagleman explores the invention, fantasy and flights of the imagination taken by one of Italy's foremost writers - Italo Calvino.

One of the 20th Century's great experimenters, Calvino consistently pushed the boundaries of literary form. Perhaps most famously in his novel 'If on a Winter's Night a Traveller...' - a book composed of the first chapters of other novels.

Calvino drew on a vast range of influences as diverse as tarot cards, astrophysics and the Brother's Grimm, drawing them together into his playful, literary worlds. His writing style danced from works of fantasy and science fiction to folktale and neo-realism - constantly resisting being defined by any single genre. Relishing the challenge to push the boundaries of literature, where he remained a quietly rebellious force until his death in 1985.

In this programme we hear from translator and Calvino scholar Professor Martin McLaughlin, the writer and academic Marina Warner and his friend Adam Pollock, amongst others. Alongside readings by Simon Russell Beale and archive of Calvino himself.

Produced by Eleanor McDowall
A Falling Tree Production for BBC Radio 3

Landmark - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Philip Dodd presents a Landmark edition examining Muriel Spark's 1961 novel The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie It's a fierce assault on the smug, joyless and sexless quality of Edinburgh middle-class life in the 1930s. Its heroine Jean Brodie, is a schoolmistress with a difference - proud, cultured and romantic, her ideas are progressive and radical. She's a dangerously confused woman, headstrong and left single by the holocaust of young men in the First World War, and forced to work out her frustrations as a teacher in a conventional Edinburgh school for girls. When she decides to transform a group of young pupils into the crème de la crème of Marcia Blaine school, 'the Brodie Set' feel honoured and privileged - but in return she expects their undivided loyalty: "give me a girl at an impressionable age and she is mine for life". However, her passionate relationship with her pupils gradually deteriorates from the eccentric and enriching, to the damaging and politically vicious. Philip Dodd is joined by novelists Ian Rankin, Louise Welsh and former Bishop of Edinburgh Richard Holloway to examine this acclaimed and disturbing portrait of adolescent trauma and lost innocence.

I Fagiolini - Renaissance and Baroque Choral Music

Live from Bath Abbey, Martin Handley introduces a concert of supersize choral music from the Renaissance and early Baroque.

Thought lost for 400 years, Alessandro Striggio's Mass in 40 Parts is believed to have been the inspiration for Thomas Tallis's great motet Spem in Alium. Involving five groups of voices and instruments placed around the Abbey, textures from 40 individual parts are woven into an all-enveloping soundscape before rising spectacularly into 60 parts for a grand finale. Plus, to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of Giovanni Gabrieli there's a new reconstruction of his mighty Magnificat.

Striggio: Ecce beatem lucem

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b00z62fy)
The Age of Creativity

Tess Jaray

Tess Jaray is an abstract painter who studied at St Martin's School of Art and the Slade School of Art, where she later taught for many years. In this essay she explores how her experience of ageing has affected her creativity.

She is an abstract painter who began working with pavement patterns in public spaces and urban centres in the 1980's. Her artistic concerns for colour, pattern and rhythm were combined with a new awareness of the possibilities of pavement designs to create a sense of place.

In her essay she explores the changes in attitude and outlook that an artist experiences as they age, from the excitement of youth to the acceptance - or not - of middle and old age. While Tolstoy may have needed to be continually in love to keep his creativity going, for others that eternal search for creative energy make come simply from a bird on a window sill.

The Age of Creativity

Frances Fyfield

For all the wisdom, self-awareness, caution and craft that comes with many years as a writer, Silver Dagger award winner Frances Fyfield finds it is another quality altogether that has matured with her; procrastination. Where once she was quick off the mark, keen to hunch over the typewriter or writing pad, now she finds a thousand natural excuses for not getting on with it. A story that once had to be told can now wait until deadline doomsday's clock reaches a minute before midnight.
Frances struggles for the positives as she looks back contemplatively at her creativity.

Strauss - Die Frau ohne Schatten

Richard Strauss
Opera matinee: Strauss Die Frau ohne Schatten Acts 1 and 2 in this Salzburg Festival performance with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Christian Thielemann
John Shea presents this week's celebration of some of the best of Austrian music making
In the mythical land of the Southeastern Islands the Emperor captures a gazelle who assumes human form and marries him. But, in a symbol of her inability to have children, she has no shadow. It is decreed that unless the Empress gains a shadow before the end of the twelfth moon, she will be reclaimed by her father and the Emperor will turn to stone.
Strauss and Hofmannsthal's opera, with its involved plot, heightened use of symbolism and generous passages of monologue has recently been enjoying the acclaim which many have felt it deserves. Calling for a large cast and orchestra and for frequent scene changes, it is difficult to stage in the theatre. but here receives a warmly received performance at the Salzburg Festival.

Once Upon a Time...

An exploration of the dark, sinister and enchanted world of fairy tales. Michael Rosen, AS Byatt and Richard Mabey take us into the woods - the realm where magic lurks, stange things happen, evil is vanquished and (usually) good prevails. Why do these tales and myths continue to exert such a powerful fascination for children and adults alike?

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b00z64bm)
The Age of Creativity

Francis Pott

Western classical music is notorious for its collection of brilliant but short lived composers. Bizet, Mozart, Schubert; they left a staggering legacy in their little span. But ageing matters profoundly to Francis Pott, not least because the passion for his music must wrestle endlessly with the mechanics of his life as a loving father.
Although a well recognised figure amongst British composing talent with pieces like 'A Cloud of Unknowing' enhancing his reputation for a fiercely individual sound and uncompromising approach to his work, Francis has never enjoyed the luxury of time and space. So will age weary or continue to nurture his creative spirit?
