Lucie Skeaping presents a concert given by Red Priest at the 2011 Bath International Festival. The theme of the event was "Nightmare in Venice" and featured all sorts of music associated with "the dark side". This concert was designed to give the audience at Bath's Guildhall a glimpse into some of the more feverish corners of the minds of the baroque masters, and includes music by Vivaldi, Leclair, Purcell, Gluck, Tartini and van Eyck.

Verdi's La Traviata
Verdi's La Traviata
Presented by Martin Handley
From the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Verdi's enduring favourite, La Traviata, recorded earlier this month. Adapted from Dumas' novel La Dame aux Camélias, it's the story of the Fallen Woman, the tragic courtesan who pays the ultimate price for taking a lover only to be forced to leave him against her wishes, as they break Parisian society's conventions. Soprano Ailyn Pérez portrays Violetta, la Traviata, in a Covent Garden debut role; Alfredo, her young, carefree lover is performed by tenor Piotr Beczala; his father, Giorgio Germont, whose family's honour is compromised by the doomed lovers, is portrayed by Simon Keenlyside - his first time in the Covent Garden stage performing a role he took recently to Japan with the ROH. This classic production of La Traviata, by Richard Eyre, provides a fascinating portrait into a pleasure-seeking, double-standards, decadent society. At the helm of the Royal Opera House Orchestra and Chorus is Patrick Lange.

SAT 20:40 Between the Ears (b00xbfr4)
Out Counting Sheep
Poet James Crowden experiences the wide range of sheep communication at lambing time in the dead of night, the interaction between ewe and lamb and birth itself, often in a sheep shed where up to 1,000 can be lambing at once. Also the talk between shepherds and their sheep and their interesting methods of counting sheep..
In the early 1980s James Crowden worked as shepherd. Some of his sheep kept escaping onto ground owned by the conductor and maestro John Eliot Gardiner. In the end John Eliot bought the sheep off James and at lambing time employed him to work as a night shepherd alongside his own shepherd Walt Pitman. It was whilst working here on the long dark nights in the lambing shed that James started to write his first book, Blood Earth and Medicine. To see a flock of 500 lambing is quite extraordinary and in the quiet of night the noises of sheep can be very illuminating - a strange language that works its way into the shed and us.
Interspersed with the sheep noises voices of shepherds talking to the sheep. Calling them, the wide variety of sheep counting systems up and down the country.
Yan Tan Tethera etc: links with old Celtic language systems + Anglo Saxon and Norse systems Wonderful variations from Rathmell to Teesdale. Also modern sheep countings shearing by the score and the sheep terms themselves gimmer, hogget, tup, ram, shearling, yo, ewe, teg, chilver, grass ewe, draft ewe, suck lamb, weather.

Super-star pianist Lang Lang - the man who's inspired millions of Chinese children to take up the piano - performs Liszt, a composer who he describes as a "rock star" but also a "truly great musician" - words that could equally describe Lang Lang himself.

We ring in the New Year with Howard Skempton's piece for church bells, Five Rings Triples, played by the bell-ringers of All Saints Church, Kingston upon Thames.

Howard Skempton had never composed for church bells before, but he was fascinated by the old English tradition of "method ringing" and he has always found the sound of church bells magical. This piece is constructed according to the traditional rules of bell-ringing, and its title reflects both the structure of the piece and the interlocking rings of the Olympic logo.

SUN 21:15 Sunday Feature (b018nr4z)
Dee
Across heaths, sands and marshes, poet Paul Farley explores the geography of the imagination inspired by the River Dee. From its source in the mountains of Snowdonia, through the borderlands of England and Wales and down to the estuary opening out to the Irish Sea he reflects on the allure of what John Milton called the 'wizard stream'.
The lower reaches of the Dee have nearly silted up and marshland covers its wide banks from which Roman legions once sailed, passengers embarked to Ireland and, further upriver, where Chester was founded. The nearby River Mersey had not yet been stirred into commercial life when the Dee was in full swing centuries ago. For Farley, born in Liverpool and a pleasure tripper to the Dee in his childhood, he always saw it as the Mersey's 'shadow river'.
In this river biography he searches for the true spirit of the Dee. Deep in North Wales, he seeks out the source of what the Celts called Deva - the waters of divinity - above Bala Lake at a place, in the ruins of a chapel, not on any map. He passes through the rapids of Llangollen a place of outstanding beauty haunted by death where folk songs of suicide in its black waters still echo today. He visits Holt where the Dee becomes the (once fractious) national border and where HG Wells, author of War of the Worlds, worked as a school teacher. He crosses Burton marshes with a wildfowler at dawn, tracing migrations of birds. Finally, he reflects on Milton's great elegy 'Lycidas' on Hilbre Island, where the Dee meets the sea and where Milton's great friend Edward King was drowned. A monastic cell used to inhabit Hilbre Island when it was a point of pilgrimage. Today, Paul finds a different kind of brotherhood looking after the island.

SUN 22:00 World Routes (b018nr51)
Bamako, Mali
Lucy Duran heads to Bamako, the capital of Mali in West Africa to explore dance band traditions new and old.
Super Biton de Segou, recorded especially for World Routes on stage at the French Institute in Bamako, are one of the great dance bands from the post-independence era. Formed at the time of President Modibo Keita's drive towards Cultural Authenticity, they took the stories and rhythms of the Segou region and formed a distinctive, driving, modern sound. 50 years on they are still going strong, and although they've never performed in the UK, are one of the most loved bands in Mali.
At the same time that government sponsored dance bands were being formed, other musicians were setting up their own brand of modern Malian music, inspired by the Apollo space missions, they became known as the Apollo bands. Today, there are few still performing, but the Freres Dambele are continuing a family tradition, and performing Apollo music in bars and clubs across Bamako. World Routes caught up with them in a dusty courtyard in a suburb of the capital for an exclusive session.

Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
A Law unto Himself
Born 200 years ago on 8th June 1810 in provincial Saxony, Robert Schumann's story is about as Romantic with a capital R as it gets - dead at 46, a love life worthy of the opera stage, his final years incarcerated in a mental asylum.
The young Robert Schumann showed promise as a pianist, had great talent as a literary writer and critic, and composed sparkling often perplexing music. Yet, hand in hand with these qualities was a gaucheness that made Schumann misunderstood. For much of his life he was fought over by opposing factions - his parents over his vocation, his father-in-law and bride-to-be over his marriage, critics and performers undecided about his music and skills as a conductor.
Donald Macleod sources the fascinating first-hand account of a man who knew Schumann well, his first biographer Wilhelm Von Wasielewski. Schumann's better-known pieces such as 'Carnaval' and 'Liederkreis Op.24' join company with rarely heard works including the astonishing oratorio 'Paradise and the Peri'. The ideal introduction to Schumann or a chance to re-evaluate a great composer in this his bicentennary year.
Donald Macleod in 'A Law unto Himself' unravels Schumann's formative years and discovers how as a young man he couldn't make up his mind whether to become a lawyer, writer, pianist or composer.

Schwetzingen Festival 2011
Takacs Quartet
Every Summer the 250-year-old castle of Schwetzingen, just outside the German city of Heidelberg, plays host to a music festival. The stars of today and, hopefully, tomorrow take part - as they have done since the festival began in 1952.
In this recital the members of the multi award-winning Takacs Quartet play Schubert. They begin with the single movement 'quartet-piece' that surely is part of an unfinished or lost larger work. They follow this with Schubert's magnificent final quartet - a piece that manages to be both lyrical and unsettling, intimate and yet on a huge scale. A true masterpiece.

Music for the Theatre
Episode 5
Penny Gore continues Afternoon on 3's occasional series of music of every kind composed for the theatre, with performances by the BBC's orchestras, and British music every day this week.
Elgar wrote his score for 'The Starlight Express' in time for the Christmas Theatre season of 1915. It's a childs-eye view of the real world thrown into the chaos of the First World War, full of fantasy: fairies, organgrinders and lamplighters show the way forward to the children, who in turn help the 'lost' grown ups.
Maeterlink's drama 'Pelleas and Melisande' is a far more adult affair which attracted several composers of the time - best known perhaps is Debussy's opera, premiered in 1902. Sibelius wrote his incidental music a couple of years later. You can hear more music inspired by Maeterlinck later this week - Faure's incidental music for 'Pelleas and Melisande' on Wednesday, Paul Dukas' only opera 'Ariane and Bluebeard' tomorrow, and on Thursday Bartok's related opera 'Duke Bluebeard's Castle'.
Plus dance music by Georges Jacobi, one of the composers who starred in last Saturday's Music Feature on Radio 3 on Music Hall ballets. He was the Music Director of the Alhambra in London's Leicester Square from the 1870s onwards, and composed more than 100 ballets.

Prom 48: Angela Hewitt
BBC PROMS 2011
Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London last August
Presented by Petroc Trelawny
Another chance to hear a Prom concert from last August in which pianist Angela Hewitt joined the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their Associate Guest Conductor, Andrew Manze, in a late night concert that celebrated the music of Brahms.
The concert opens with solo piano as Angela Hewitt performs the first two of Brahms's popular Op. 117 Intermezzos, the first of which was inspired by a Scottish folk song. As a young man Brahms met Robert Schumann who became his musical father figure while his wife Clara his muse. Schumann's Introduction and Allegro was written just before Brahms met the Schumanns and was premiered with Clara Schumann at the keyboard - it was later dedicated to Brahms. Finally we observe the romantic composer Brahms viewed through the prism of the modernist composer Arnold Schoenberg in his piano quartet which Schoenberg arranged for orchestra in 1937.

Music for the Theatre
Episode 6
Penny Gore presents the only opera written by French composer Paul Dukas - indeed this comprises more than half of the surviving music by the composer of the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice', as Dukas was destroyed much of his own work he wasn't 100% happy with.
He based his opera on the Maurice Maeterlinck's play about Duke Bluebeard's wife Ariane - written a few years after his 'Pelleas and Melisande' for which both Sibelius and Faure composed incidental music (you can hear Faure's tomorrow, while Sibelius's was broadcast in Afternoon on 3 yesterday).
Ariane arrives at Duke Bluebeard's castle as his his new wife, and the duke gives her the keys to six doors which in this version of the tale open to reveal jewels and untold riches. The Duke tells Ariane never to open the seventh door, with its golden key. Of course she can't resist this and when she discovers the hidden door, it opens to release Bluebeard's previous wives. This all happens in Act One, and in the remainder of the opera with Ariane encourages the previous wives to revolt against their cruel husband. Eventually they do capture and subdue the Duke, but only Ariane has the nerve to walk away: the other wives cannot leave Bluebeard, preferring to live with him despite his cruelty.
The Duke's role in this version of the opera (as opposed to Bartok's better known version which we'll hear on Thursday) is quite small. The focus is really Ariane - her motivation, her interaction with the Duke's previous wives and her determination to throw off the misogynist yoke of her husband.
Plus - continuing this week's series of British theatre music performed by the BBC's orchestras - the BBC National Orchestra of Wales play the dance music from another opera: Michael Tippett's 'The Midsummer Marriage'.

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch
Another chance to hear Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre at last year's Proms with music from their Russian homeland with a complete performance of Tchaikovsky's great ballet Swan Lake.
Swan Lake tells the story of Prince Siegfried and his love for the Swan Queen, Odette. She and her swan retinue are human beings under the spell of an evil sorcerer - swans by day, human beings by night. The story of how the terrible spell is eventually broken and Siegfried and Odette united for ever is one of the most romantic and passionate tales told in the world of ballet. Tchaikovsky's score is both vivid and subtle, especially when, as this evening, it is heard complete, rather than in the more often heard suite.

Omid Djalili is a British Iranian and a member of the Baha'i faith, a religion which, although it only has seven million adherents, is geographically the second most widespread in the world. Omid's forbears were among its first adherents in 19th century Iran, a country in which those practising the faith are now persecuted. The core principles of Bahá'í doctrine are the unity of God, the unity of religion, and the unity of humankind. Omid's central belief is summed up in a quote from Teilhard de Chardin, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.".

BBC PROMS 2011
Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London last August
Presented by Andrew McGregor
Another chance to hear the music of Steve Reich which he brought to the Proms last year in celebration of his 75th birthday. His hypnotic rhythms and elements taken from jazz and non-Western traditions produce some ravishing music.
Clapping Music shows off the percussive abilities of two people who make music with nothing but their own bodies. In Electric Counterpoint a single electric guitarist builds up alluring layers of sound with a multiple guitar soundtrack.
Music for 18 Musicians is a seminal piece from the 1970s and one of Reich's best-known works. The exotic colours and percussive textures are very striking, as is the unusual ensemble, featuring multiple pianos, marimbas and xylophones. It is a work Reich himself is still very satisfied with, and its enduring nature has led to many contemporary electronica artists sampling it today.

The stars of today and, hopefully, tomorrow take part - as they have done since the festival began in 1952. Among such an international line-up it was good to see a young chamber-group from England taking its place.
The Heath Quartet is now approaching its 10th birthday and is making a fine reputation at home and abroad. In this recital they contrast a work by the young Benjamin Britten - written just before he left the United States during the 2nd World War - with music that's full of the folk-rhythms of Dvorak's native Bohemia.

BBC PROMS 2011
Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London last September
Presented by Martin Handley
Another chance to hear a rare performance of Weber's opera Der Freischutz in the French version by Berlioz from last year's Proms. One of the cornerstones of German Romantic opera the work was reimagined by Berlioz - a huge fan of Weber - for audiences in Paris in 1841. As originally composed, the work has spoken dialogue in German, but for the Paris production this was replaced with recitatives as well as adding the ballet expected by French audiences at the time.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts, and tenor Andrew Kennedy as the forester-hero, Max, and the Belgian soprano Sophie Karthauser as his beloved Agathe lead the international cast in this dramatic tale of romance and magic.

A leading quartet of our time is joined by the distinguished cellist and founder member of the Berg Quartet, Valentin Erben. Barely thirty years old, but already near death, Schubert had his String Quintet rejected by his publisher and only performed and published many years after his death. But its exploratory outer movements and the sublimely transcendent slow movement, continue to inspire musicians, poets, film makers and audiences to this day.

Schwetzingen Festival 2011
Andras Schiff
Every Summer the 250-year-old castle of Schwetzingen, just outside the German city of Heidelberg, plays host to a music festival. The stars of today and, hopefully, tomorrow take part - as they have done since the festival began in 1952.
In this recital the Hungarian-born pianist Andras Schiff plays one of Beethoven's most remarkable works - his 'Diabelli' variations. A perky little waltz by Anton Diabelli, one of Beethoven's Viennese contemporaries, provides him with a jumping-off point for a wide-ranging exploration of how far he could stretch the idea of a theme and variations. Beethoven's imaginative genius takes us to places that seem a very long way indeed from Diabelli's little tune.

Thursday Opera Matinee
Bartok - Duke Bluebeard's Castle
Thursday Opera Matinee, presented by Penny Gore.
Maurice Maeterlinck's play 'Ariane and Bluebeard' inspired first Paul Dukas's opera (broadcast in Afternoon on 3 on Tuesday) and then the Hungarian writer Bela Balazs, who radically adapted the story as a libretto for his friend Bela Bartok. The result is a far briefer, more psychological drama than Dukas' extended feminist treatment. Bartok concentrates on the device of the locked doors which forms only the start of the Dukas opera, but evokes such a claustrophic and intense atmosphere that everything is loaded on to the two characters: the Duke and his latest in a line of wives - Judith.
Continuing our theme of British theatre music is Constant Lambert's ballet music wound around the signs of the zodiac, premiered in London in 1938. And, since it's still the pantomime season (oh yes it is!) Penny rounds off the afternoon with Frenchman Jean Francaix's lighthearted music for a ballet of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.

Imagine his annoyance when he arrived at the theatre to find that half the orchestra pit had disappeared to accomodate an extended stage, and that the orchestra would have to sit on the stage and perform from under the 'staircase' set. If that wasn't bad enough the theatre producer then proceeded to cut and re-order large chunks of the music. Nielsen had enough and removed his name from the production's posters and programmes.
Perhaps Nielsen should have let Sibelius know about his problems, as the same theatre and same producer approached Sibelius for music for a production of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' in 1925. However, perhaps it was the producer who had learnt his lesson as this was a far more successful production. One review said: 'Shakespeare and Sibelius - at last these two geniuses have found one another'. Sibelius composed his 'Tempest' score after his Seventh Symphony, and along with Tapiola it was the last music Sibelius published.
