The LSO and Valery Gergiev conducts the LSO in Debussy's L'apres midi, two symphonies by Stravinsky and the premiere of James Macmillan's Violin Concerto.
Vadim Repin joins the LSO in the premiere of James MacMillan's latest work, a new Violin Concerto, as part of the orchestra's season-long celebration of the composer's 50th birthday. Three masterpieces frame the new work: Debussy's enticing Prélude á l'après-midi d'un Faune, of which his biographer claimed, when it was written in 1894, 'nothing like it existed in music,' and two of Stravinsky's greatest neo-classical works.
Followed by: The art of organ improvisation - Magnus Williamson at the organ of Peterborough Cathedral.
Anne McElvoy discusses the human propensity for lying with psychologist Dorothy Rowe. Dorothy says we lie because we are frightened of being humiliated and being rejected. They are joined by Lord Falconer, the Barrister, politician and former Lord Chancellor in the Blair government in a discussion on lying in public and private spheres.
Broadway director Hal Prince is also a guest - he was responsible for the premier productions of Cabaret, A Little Night Music, Evita and many more, and is staging his new musical in London before it opens in Broadway this autumn. Called 'Paradise Found', it's based on a true story about the Shah of Persia visiting Vienna in the 1870s, and how he - embarrassingly - fell in love with the Emperor's wife.
Palestinian film director Elia Suleiman talks about his new film, The Time That Remains. It's a personal account of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on his father's own diaries and his mother's letters, it's centred on his home town of Nazareth. Suleiman mixes tense scenes of hardship and fear with almost Buster-Keaton type sight gags. And in a trademark of his films - Suleiman plays himself.
As Craig Venter 'builds life' in the laboratory and conjures up Frankenstein connotations, Anne is joined by Professor Judith Hawley to look at the influence of science on literature and literature's effect on the way we view science.
Jonathan Sawday continues his exploration of Restoration Britain. In this essay, how Charles II's return brought a resurrection of the king's bodily powers like his healing "touch". Jonathan Sawday uses this event to tell the story of how the body returned to public life in so many forms - women on stage, sexualised poetry, the return of fashion, the first attempts at surgery - it symbolised a pushing aside of the Godly people who had ruled under Cromwell.
Fiona Talkington introduces tracks from Jan Bang's new release "....and poppies from Kandahar", explores Gianluigi Trovesi's take on Verdi opera and discovers how crunchy apples inspire Matthew Herbert.

Perth Festival 2010
Part 1
Presented by Mary Ann Kennedy
In this live broadcast the BBC Singers bring choral music with a Scottish flavour to the Perth Festival, drawing both on the riches of Scotland's musical past and on its present.
From the 16th century, music by the great Robert Carver - monk at Scone Abbey - and by his contemporaries Robert Johnson and David Peebles.
Scotland's more recent cultural history is represented in a strikingly virtuosic setting of William Dunbar's words by Thea Musgrave (born in Edinburgh), a haunting Celtic lament by James Macmillan, music by Master of the Queen's Music, and modern-day Orcadian settler, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.
Completing the programme, the UK premiere of a piece by the BBC Singers' Associate Composer Gabriel Jackson - a seascape setting words by Estonian poet Doris Kareva, a choral classic by Ralph Vaughan Williams, works with a Celtic slant by Rutland Boughton and Granville Bantock, and - a real curiosity - settings, in German, of Robert Burns' words by the great German Romantic composer Robert Schumann, who was born 200 years ago this year.
Thea Musgrave: Rorate coeli
Robert Johnson: Gaude Maria virgo
Robert Carver: Agnus Dei Mass Fera pessima
Peter Maxwell Davies: Sea Runes
Granville Bantock: 3 Hebridean Songs (Sea Sorrow; Song to the seals; Milking Song)
Gabriel Jackson: A ship with unfurled sails (UK premiere)
BBC Singers
David Hill (conductor).
WED 19:45 Twenty Minutes (b00m0g62)
Entrance to the Underworld
High Pasture Cave on the island of Skye is one of an entirely new category of archaeological site - shedding light on the life, death and thinking of Iron Age people. It's marked by fire and feasting. In mid-winter, sacrifices of as many as 50 piglets could be made, their bones deposited in the cave, along with many other gifts for the gods, even what are possibly the bone pegs from a lyre. But there was also death here, in this cave with its underground stream. The bones of a woman, a very young baby and a foetus were offered up, covered by stones on a ritual stairway to the depths. The foetal bones had been mixed with the bones of a fetal pig. Isotope analysis showed that the woman and the babies were related. Archaeologists have long been puzzled about the fate of the Iron Age dead. What light can the cave, its offerings and its underground stream shed on this mystery?
Historian Dòmhnall Uilleam Stiùbhart of Edinburgh University's Celtic department explores the site with archaeologist Steven Birch. Fraser Hunter, a curator of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and Orcadian archaeologist Martin Carruthers, help us understand the fascinating lives and afterlives of our Iron Age ancestors. We'll also hear music on replica Bronze age instruments from Scottish musicologist John Purser.

Elgar's Cello Concerto and Janáček's Taras Bulba.
The RSNO completes its cycle of Schumann symphonies with the Fourth, one of the most innovative and influential of all his works by reason of its extraordinary structure in which all four movements are thoroughly integrated. Natalie Clein joins the Orchestra for the stirring, elegiac Elgar Cello Concerto. And, to bring the orchestra's current season to a spectacular close, Janáček's powerful orchestral rhapsody Taras Bulba: a true celebration of the insurmountable Cossack spirit.

David Nash, Michael Winterbottom, Samuel Beckett
The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is putting on a major retrospective for the sculptor David Nash looking at 40 years of work characterised by large geometric sculptures in natural materials. Matthew Sweet hears from the artist himself and reviews the exhibition with critic Richard Mabey.
And Matthew interviews film maker Michael Winterbottom about his intensely violent new work, 'The Killer Inside Me'. It depicts the life of a violent sociopath whose public face is as a small town deputy sherrif. Cultural historian Joanna Bourke and film critic Nigel Floyd review the film and discuss the portrayal of extreme voilence in cinema.
Matthew also discusses Samuel Beckett's fiction writing as two of his lesser known novels and stories are published, Malone Dies and More Pricks than Kicks. He's joined by critic Mary Bryden and actor Peter Marinka to find out whether Beckett should be better known for his prose output.

The King Returned
Episode 5
Jonathan Sawday paints a picture of Restoration Britain, on the return of Charles II to the throne in 1660. Why did the idea of the contract become so pervasive in society?
The King may have been invited home to his rightful place, but some things had changed for good. After 1649, any king had to be aware of the idea of a contract of with his people. After all, that was philosopher Thomas Hobbes' defence of monarchy in the 1650s - and it culminated at the end of this period with John Locke's famous Social Contract and the 1688 Glorious Revolution. Jonathan tells the story of why the idea of the contract become so pervasive in political and mercantile Restoration society.
Producer: Hannah Godfrey and Matthew Dodd.
FRI 23:15 World on 3 (b00sgz17)
Tamikrest are a group of desert nomads from Mali, Niger and Algeria. They have been branded the "spiritual sons" of Malian super-group Tinariwen, and tonight join Lopa Kothari in session. Producer James Parkin
Tamashek is the language of the Touareg, a nomadic people inhabiting the Saharan desert across various countries, including Niger, Algeria, Libya and Mali. The name Tamikrest is Tamashek for junction or connection or coalition. The seven members of Tamikrest, who originate from Mali, Niger and Algeria, came together to express their Touareg identity through Ishumar rock, the Touareg rebel music.
The band's leader and songwriter, 27-year-old singer/guitarist Ousmane Ag Mossa explains: "When Touareg children arrive in the public Malian schools, they are soon confronted with an administration that refuses to see the realities our people suffer. Our hope is to have the world listen to our revolutionary songs, which reflect the harsh life conditions that our people endure."
Tamikrest's songs also praise the desert, a place that is fundamental for the Touareg. And it was in the silky dunes of Essakane at the 2008 Festival of the Desert where they met Dirtmusic, a group of rock'n'roll veterans from the USA and Australia. With their tents side by side not only did they share Touareg tea, but they also found themselves jamming together and discovered that their ideas and music fit perfectly.
The two bands stayed in touch, and Dirtmusic later returned to Mali to record their own album "BKO" which features Tamikrest, Fadimata from Tartit as well as Lobi Traoré (to be released in the spring of 2010). Soon after, Dirtmusic's Chris Eckman returned to Mali to produce Tamikrest's debut album at the famous studio Bogolan in Bamako.
