The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 12:15 Music Matters (b00ksrxj)
Haydn

Tom Service examines our attitudes to the music of Haydn and tries to get to the bottom of why he isn't as popular as Mozart or Beethoven.

With the help of some of the leading Haydn aficionados - pianists Alfred Brendel and Robert Levin, leader of the Lindsays Peter Cropper, and pianist and musicologist Charles Rosen - Tom finds out just how Haydn did it, why it is we think of him as 'witty', and what sort of a man really lay behind that intricately constructed, sometimes humorous and always profound music.

Staring at the Wall

Alan Dein captures the sounds and thoughts of everyday life just outside the walls of Pentonville prison in North London, building up a portrait of enclosure, freedom and imagination.

He talks to Bob, who was born close to Pentonville and grew up in the area. Bob rented a flat across the road with his girlfriend, became an inmate himself and watched her comings and goings on the street outside. Now a free man for many years, he lives just feet from the prison wall, but this time on the outside, staring at the wall first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

SUN 17:00 Discovering Music (b00kssvj)
Haydn Symphonies Nos 22 and 92

Stephen Johnson and the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Nicholas Kraemer, explore two titled Haydn symphonies, considering how the composer's musical imagination was inspired by the day-to-day happenings in his life.

His symphony No 22 (The Philosopher) is believed to have been inspired by the appearance of a pair of unusual instruments - both cor anglais - at his workplace in Esterhazy. Whatever prompted Haydn to use these rare instruments resulted in a work that remains one of the most popular among his early symphonies.

Stephen also explores some of the novelties in one of Haydn's later symphonies, the Oxford. It was supposedly composed to celebrate Haydn's honorary degree at the English University, but was in fact slightly reworked and composed a short while earlier.

SUN 18:30 Choir and Organ (b00kssvl)
Haydn Part Songs

Aled Jones explores the part songs inspired by Haydn's visit to one of England's burgeoning singing societies - the so-called glee clubs. On the way he discovered a masculine world of convoluted etiquette, heavy drinking and pseudo-parliamentary democracy. While Haydn's life was one of never-ending deadlines, at the mercy of more commissions than he could manage, this was one occasion when he wrote genuinely for pleasure.

SUN 20:00 Drama on 3 (b00kssvn)
Hyde Park-on-Hudson

A play by Richard Nelson, blending history and conjecture.

No reigning British monarch had ever been to the United States before George VI's visit in 1939, just on the cusp of a new world war. History was in the making when the King and Queen arrived at President Roosevelt's upstate New York home, with a promise of politics, a picnic and hot dogs. But the private life of the President provided a whole new dimension to an epochal moment, at least in the memory of his lover.

Julian Joseph presents interviews and performances from two pianists and composers - Hiromi Uehara and Lynne Arriale.

Hiromi Uehara, who was born in Japan, talks about her approach to performance and plays two solos on piano as a preview to a forthcoming CD with bassist Stanley Clark. An alumnus of Boston's Berklee College, she started her career improvising with figures such as Chick Corea.

American Lynne Arriale discusses her new CD, Nuance, in which she teams up with trumpeter Randy Brecker and bassist to perform predominantly her own original compositions.

Plus a specially recorded Radio 3 commission, performed by Bojan Z at the Bath Music Festival 2009.

Wagner: Gotterdammerung

Gotterdammerung - Prologue and Act 1

Presented by Martin Handley.

In a concert from Manchester's Bridgewater Hall, the Halle give their first performance of a complete Wagner opera, with Mark Elder conducting, Lars Cleveman as Siegfried and Katarina Dalayman as Brunnhilde.

As a pledge of his love, Siegfried gives Brunnhilde the ring he took from the dragon Fafner, the ring made from the Rheingold that gives its owner power over all the world. Then she sends him into the world to do heroic deeds. But in the hall of the Gibichungs, Hagen has other ideas: a magic potion will make Siegfried forget Brunnhilde and fall in love with Gutrune. The Ring's final chapter is a saga of passion and vengeance, culminating in an act of self-sacrifice and redemption.

Philip hears from the creators of Kursk, a theatre work inspired by the Russian submarine disaster of August 2000.

Plus a discussion about John Woo's film Red Cliff, a historical epic, set during the Han Dynasty. Featuring spectacular battle scenes, it is the most expensive and highest-grossing Chinese language film ever made.

Wagner: Gotterdammerung

Wagner: Gotterdammerung - Acts 2 and 3

Presented by Martin Handley.

Mark Elder conducts the Halle Orchestra, with Lars Cleveman as Siegfried and Katarina Dalayman as Brunnhilde in a celebrated production of the second and third acts of Wagner's Gotterdammerung.

The love between Siegfried and Brunnhilde is doomed and, as the Norns predicted, the final catastrophe is impending. In the darkness of night, Hagen's sleep is interrupted by Alberich appearing through the moonlight, urging him to murder Siegfried and to seize the ring from his finger. The drama threads its way through love potions, fatal deceptions, the Rhine's bursting of its banks and the fiery destruction of Valhalla with its gods and heroes.

TUE 21:15 Night Waves (b00kstkr)
Children's Laureate/Mary Tudor/Sam Mendes plays

Matthew Sweet talks to the new Children's Laureate on the day their appointment is announced.

Matthew and guests discuss Mary Tudor's controversial reputation, asking how bloody was Bloody Mary? Mary was England's first Queen; she returned England to Catholicism and in just under four years burned nearly 300 Protestants for their beliefs.

There is a review of Sam Mendes' star-studded pairing of the Cherry Orchard and The Winter's Tale, which mix American and British actors, including Simon Russell Beale and Ethan Hawke.

And to mark the 60th anniversary of the publication of George Orwell's novel 1984, there is a discussion about how the word 'Orwellian' has taken on a life of its own as a useful political adjective. Other 'authorial adjectives' include Dickensian and sadistic, so which other authors deserve to be employed in this way?

THU 21:15 Night Waves (b00ksx94)
Phedre/Democracy/Venice Biennale/Religion and Women

Rana Mitter presents the arts and ideas programme.

Susannah Clapp has the first review of The National Theatre's production of Phedre, in which Helen Mirren stars as the eponymous tragic Greek heroine destroyed by her passion for her own stepson.

Rana talks to politics professor John Keane about his new book charting the history of democracy. Far from witnessing the triumph of democracy, the 21st century - according to Keane - will actually see its destruction and mutation. Are today's democracies sleepwalking their way into trouble?

Sylvia Smith reports from the world's oldest art festival - the Venice Biennale - which has an increasing focus on Arabic art. The Gulf States have opened their first pavilions in the 2009 exhibition.

And does God hate women? Yes, says American philosopher Ophelia Benson, who argues that religion encourages the oppression of women and attacks Western liberals for not speaking out against religious misogyny. Rana debates this controversial claim with Ophelia Benson, Madeleine Bunting and Humera Khan.

FRI 19:00 Performance on 3 (b00ksztb)
BBCNOW/Weller

Presented by Martin Handley.

In a concert given at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales play music by Dvorak and Beethoven, plus Szymanowski, in which they are joined by violinist Alina Ilbragimova.

The programme begins with Dvorak's eerie The Noonday Witch, followed by Szymanowski's intense and romantic First Violin Concerto, and then concluding with Beethoven's Symphony No 7. Few symphonies are more demonic in their energy and power than this work, which Wagner described as 'the apotheosis of the dance', though when Weber heard it, he thought Beethoven 'fit for the madhouse'.

Dvorak: The Noonday Witch
Szymanowski: Violin Concerto No 1
Beethoven: Symphony No 7

Alina Ilbragimova (violin)
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Walter Weller (conductor)

Followed by perforrmances from previous winners of the Cardiff Singer of the World, including songs by Schubert performed by Bryn Terfel.
