Is This a Record?
Many classical artists over the years have made recordings that in hindsight might be seen as ill-advised, whether through a dubious attempt at 'crossover', or simply through an unsuitable choice of repertoire. Norman Lebrecht looks at these recordings and discusses them with some of the leading record producers of the past 40 years to try and discover how and why they get made. Contributors include Thomas Z Shepherd, Steven Epstein and Herbert Breslin.

PCM3 - Grieg, Tchaikovsky
Presented by Christopher Cook, from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Violinist Alina Ibragimova and pianist Huw Watkins perform two works by French composers at opposite ends of their careers: Debussy's Sonata was the last work he completed, while Messiaen's Theme and Variations is a youthful piece written as a wedding present for his first wife. The violin part of Prokofiev's neo-classical Second Sonata though virtuosic is also highly lyrical and elegant, evidence of the work's inception as a sonata for flute.

Huw Watkins (piano)
Debussy: Sonata for violin and piano
Messiaen: Theme and variations, for violin and piano
Prokofiev: Sonata No 2 in D for violin and piano, Op 94a.

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Suzy Klein.
James O'Donnell puts the organ of the Royal Albert Hall through its paces in one of the landmarks of 20th-century repertoire for the instrument, Messiaen's Messe de la Pentecôte, which draws musical inspiration from birdsong and concludes with a shattering depiction of pentecostal tongues of fire engulfing the Apostles. Alongside it, sacred French music for the same church feast from an earlier tradition: a Renaissance mass by Pierre de Manchicourt, a composer who, though little known today, ended his life as master of the royal chapel of Philip II of Spain and who no less a figure than Orlando Lassus called a 'distinguished and excellent composer of music'.

A Brief History of Cunning
American writer and satirist Joe Queenan traces the history of cunning, from Odysseus to Karl Rove, via Machiavelli, Richard Nixon and Margaret Thatcher. He talks to experts, observers and practitioners of the dark arts, from Professor of Classics Edith Hall to Tim Parks, translator of Machiavelli's The Prince.
In Italy he meets a commentator who describes cunning as a pathology of intelligence, while former Conservative party treasurer Lord McAlpine sees it more as a 'little nudge here, a little nudge there'.
Other contributors include writer Kathy Lette, Italian journalist Beppe Severgnini, law professor Don Herzog, and actor Ian Richardson, prime minister in the BBC's House of Cards.
SUN 22:15 Words and Music (b00cx19y)
Crushed
Readers Rafe Spall and Abigail Davies.
‘In the end it took me a dictionary to find out the meaning of unrequited’. So sings the Saturday Boy in Billy Bragg’s evocation of the pain of unrequited love. The dictionary would only have told him that unrequited means unreturned. Looking into the world of music and poetry he would have found that unrequited love is much more complex and nuanced.
Schooldays are often the start, also for Gwyneth Lewis in her poem ‘To the boys I loved who never loved me’ which brings back memories of adolescence and makes an important statement in this territory: I was never made less by loving you more. Unrequited Love can leave someone a sad, winsome and even quite pathetic figure. However, in reading poetry and listening to music that dealt with this idea it soon becomes clear that once the hope is gone, how the person deals with the love and longing that remains is fertile ground.
The physical decline of Miss Haversham’s dress and rooms might be shocking, and the still upper lip fortitude found in the Houseman poetry quite painful, but the determination and self–knowledge demonstrated by both are things I found to be noble and empowering.
The idea of a carrying something inside that isn’t just going to go away is also explored in Simon Rae’s poem ‘Believed’. This isn’t about unrequited love, but is nonetheless a longing for something that’s never going to happen. There is perhaps in all of us a longing for the things we didn’t do, the words unspoken, people unkissed, journeys not taken.
This is also touched on in Sophie Hannah’s poem To the Memory of Love where Love was Not. Unrequited Love can be painful, and the love that remains after hope has gone can be the most painful of all. Sophie Hannah reminds us that however painful the feelings, at least those feelings are there, true and present, and in some way make us real.
There’s a great deal of music that can be related to unrequited love. Brahms and Berlioz come to mind for their devotions to Clara Schumann and Harriet Smithson respectively. Billie Holiday had to be there not just for the song – she sings ‘Love me or Leave me’ here – but for her own life and that voice that carries so much loss and pain so beautifully. The plangent dissonances of early string music are so reminiscent of the pains and stabs of love, and I’ve included music by Gibbons and Biber. To finish, I have included the quintet from Wagner’s Die Meistersinger where Hans Sachs, one of the most humane and complex of all operatic characters sings of how ‘the heart’s sweet burden had to be subdued’ and renounces his love for Eva.

Gioachino Rossini
Episode 1
Rossini’s operatic career got underway in 1810 with La cambiale di matrimonio – the first, melodious gust of a musical whirlwind that was to blow unabated for 20 years, then die down as abruptly as it had sprung up. When he retired from operatic composition at the age of 37, he had more than three dozen operas to his credit, yet relatively few of them have kept a place in the repertoire. This week, Donald Macleod turns his attention to Rossini’s forgotten operatic masterpieces, starting, today, with his one-act farsa, Il signor Bruschino. But first – and for the only time this week – a word from a rather more familiar character …

WOMAD 2008
Mary Ann Kennedy with more highlights from this year's WOMAD Festival, including a taste of the Rio Carnival from Brazilian band Monobloco, and Tuareg desert blues fromTerakaft.
Notes:-
Monobloco brought the Rio Carnival to WOMAD - they are one of Brazil's most popular 'bloco', or street-bands, and they perform every year in the Rio Carnival. They have been hailed as a breath of feresh air on the carnival scene, as they play not only samba rhythms, but a wide variety of other traditional beats too. Even their rehearsals attract thousands of spectators in Rio. They performed in the Siam Tent on the Saturday afternoon of the Festival.
Terakaft are a desert blues band from Mali, started by two founder-members of fellow Touareg band Tinariwen. Their name means 'Caravan' in Tamashek, and they played their first concert in 2001. They were also in the Siam Tent, closing the Friday night-Saturday morning session at
1.45am.

BBC Proms 2008
Leonard Slatkin conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a Prom featuring three diverse composers. Chen Yi's Olympic Fire was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and to look forward to the London Olympics in 2012.
Winner of the 2001 Van Cliburn Competition Olga Kern plays one of the best-loved works by fellow-Russian Sergei Rachmaninov.
The Prom finishes with two major pieces by Ralph Vaughan Williams: a work for strings commissioned for the New York World's Fair just before the Second World War and a searing symphony apparently inspired by the horrors that conflict brought. Introduced by Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

Petroc Trelawny presents a selection of music and guests from the arts world, and is joined by organist Jennifer Bate ahead of her 2008 Prom featuring works by her former teacher, Olivier Messiaen. Soprano Karita Mattila discusses performing in a concert with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo at the Edinburgh International Festival 2008.
And as Errollyn Wallen's Songbook is being staged as a narrative for the first time as part of the 2008 Grimeborn opera season, the composer and four emerging opera singers perform songs from the work live in the studio.

Gioachino Rossini
Episode 4
Rossini is often characterized as lazy; in fact ‘workaholic’ would be a more accurate description. ‘He has toiled long and wearily enough’, wrote his father in a letter of 1827, referring to the composer’s almost superhuman productivity over the previous decade and a half. Today, Donald Macleod talks us through Rossini’s two-act musical melodrama Bianca e Falliero, the final production of one of the composer’s busiest ever years, 1819.

Final Exposure
Journalist Christine Finn explores the private world of late British landscape photographer Fay Godwin, who left London in 1995 and moved permanently to the family's former holiday home in a remote, secret location on the Sussex coast. Godwin found a new direction for her work and introduced colour for the first time.
After her death in 2005, Godwin's family offered her considerable archive to the British Library. Finn, the first journalist to be allowed to visit, was shown round Godwin's home by her friend film-maker Maggie Taylor, gaining an insight into the power of the place that inspired Godwin.

Piano fever in China
Petroc Trelawny visits the Chinese city of Guangzhou and the Shanghai Conservatoire as well as fast-food style piano kindergartens and the biggest piano factory in the world to find out why China is gripped by piano fever. Tens of millions of shoolchildren are learning the instrument and Western classical music is in the ascendancy. Yet less than four decades ago, classical music was banned and pianos were smashed as symbols of Western decadence.

Jimmy McGriff
Alyn Shipton picks the finest discs by jazz organist Jimmy McGriff, who died in May 2008 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. He was not only one of the fathers of both soul jazz and acid jazz, but was widely regarded as one of the greatest of all jazz organists. As well as Alyn's archive interviews with McGriff himself, there are several of his finest tracks including All about My Girl, I've Got a Woman and The Worm.
