Schumann's Liederkreis, Op 39, is considered to be one of the greatest song cycles of the 19th century. Composed in 1840, Liederkreis comprises 12 songs which set poems by the German Romantic poet, Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff. Together, the 12 songs explore themes of loss, loneliness, nocturnal mystery, ecstasy and reverie. Schumann himself considered the Liederkreis, Op 39 to be the most romantic music he had ever written, and he wrote to his wife that the cycle had 'music of you in it, dearest Clara'.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m000zssf)
Francesca Stavrakopoulou

Francesca Stavrakopoulou is fascinated by the Bible, and she’s a leading scholar of those ancient texts which have so profoundly shaped how we see the world. She’s Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Religion at the University of Exeter; she’s also a convinced and passionate atheist. She is the author of several books about the Bible, and her most recent is her most daring: called “God: An Anatomy”, it draws on the Bible to describe the body of God, from head to foot, in a way she herself describes as “very controversial”.

In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Francesca talks about how her early fascination with Greek gods has inspired her to think differently about the God of the Bible. She talks movingly too about her partner, who served as a marine in Afghanistan, and how difficult it is to adjust to life after the army.

Music choices include Tallis, Beethoven, Elgar, and Handel’s portrayal of her favourite Biblical heroine, Athalia.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (m000zssm)
How to listen to... Arvo Pärt

Tom Service lifts the lid on the music of the most popular living composer - Arvo Part. Nominated for 11 Grammy awards and revered by Bjork, P.J Harvey, and Radiohead, as well as classical musicians around the world, his seemingly simple and spiritual music is loved by millions. Born in Estonia in 1935 he did military service in the Soviet Army, worked as a radio producer, and wrote music for films, documentaries and animations, before creating his unique style of composition ‘tintinnabulation’.

But what exactly is tintinnabulation? What do you get when you cross mathematics with love? And how can strict rules and discipline ultimately mean freedom?

Our witnesses are violinist Viktoria Mullova who has recorded many of Part’s seminal works, and theologian Dr Peter Bouteneff who has researched his music’s connections with his Orthodox faith.

Producer: Ruth Thomson

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (m000zssp)
Light and Shade

Dammed as depraved, and lauded as a brilliant innovator: the artist Caravaggio was born 450 years ago this month. Michaelangelo Merisi, to give him his birth name, often depicted moments of violence and vanity, using the technique known as tenebrism, an extreme dramatic contrast between areas of light and shade. To mark the anniversary, we hear readings that move between darkness and light, from a hymn in praise of darkness by Caravaggio’s contemporary Edward Herbert, Lord Cherbury, to the 20th century poet Rabindranath Tagore’s evocation of a world suffused with light, taking in all the shades in between courtesy of Milton, Elizabeth Jennings, Gerard Manley Hopkins, HD, and John Donne, amongst others. We also hear John Ruskin’s damning assessment of Caravaggio as an artist of darkness and depravity, and imagine his reply. With music including madrigals directly depicted in Caravaggio’s work, and pieces by Mozart, Ligeti, Offenbach and the Velvet Underground. Readers: Ruby Bentall and Justice Ritchie

This edition also includes original settings of poems referenced in Caravaggio's work: Petrarch's Leave Off Your Veil, and Icarus, as well as Gli Uomini Valenti, taken from a contemporary report of testimony Caravaggio gave at a trial. Original recordings by Electropastiche, Voice and translations by Matteo Augello, Guitars by William Vitali, Produced by Jodi Pedrali.
These are extracts from an upcoming show on Caravaggio which will debut in 2022 (dacaravaggio.com)

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (m000zssr)
The Many Diagnoses of Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann attempted suicide by casting himself into The Rhine in 1854. He survived, only to be admitted at his own request to a mental asylum in Endenich, near Bonn, where he died two years later in 1856, aged just 46.

It’s one of music’s most tragic stories, and it would go on to have a life of its own. What happened? What was the nature of his illness? Was he suffering from bipolar disorder? Schizophrenia? Syphilis?

In this Sunday Feature, music journalist Phil Hebblethwaite finds that Schumann has been the focus of vast quantities of research conducted by psychiatrists. In tracing these many post-death diagnoses, a bigger story emerges – a history of psychiatry itself since the 1850s, as well as a portrait of political upheaval and changing social values.

The musicologist and physician Yael Braunschweig has plotted these developments and acts as one of many guides through Schumann’s retrospective diagnoses.

With contributions from Yael Braunschweig, Judith Chernaik, Professor David Healey, Professor Kay Redfield Jamison, Professor Erik Levi, Dr Catherine Oppenheimer and Steven Isserlis.

SUN 23:00 Extraordinary Voices with Nora Fischer (m000qjy0)
Storytelling

In a series of three shows, Nora celebrates what the voice can do with a fabulously diverse playlist of tracks from around the world and across the centuries.

She listens to raw and passionate Bulgarian and Scandinavian singing alongside the profound warmth of Russian basses. She compares the ethereal angst of the voice of the last castrato to the effect of the longest high tenor C in classical music. And she sets the twisting ornamental lines of an 18th-century Handel opera aria next to the runs perfected by Whitney Houston and Beyoncé.

In the final episode of her series, Nora Fischer finds out how a vocalist can tell a tale - not just in the words they’re singing, but in the very character of their voice. She showcases the unique styles of Lotte Lenya, Nina Simone and Frank Sinatra - artists who seem to embody the very meaning of each song they perform. And she finds composers like Gesualdo, Handel and Schoenberg creating emotion and tension through their manipulation of vocal lines as stories unfold before our ears.

Béla Bartók (1881-1945)

A Country to Make

Donald Macleod explores the early musical life of Béla Bartók.

Among the list of elements that feed into the formation of an outstanding musician might be good teaching, a quality instrument, focus, determination, consistency, encouragement.

But there is also the brute fact of physiology.

Béla Bartók may have been of slight build and somewhat sickly, but he had unusually large hands. So while he didn’t show any exceptional compositional talent as a young man, he was expected to have a brilliant career as a pianist.

His Suite dedicated to the memory of Tchaikovsky was written in 1897. After this rarity, Gautier Capuçon joins the orchestra in two celebrated cello concertos, and the programme is completed with Haydn’s ‘Hen’ symphony, so called because a clucking second subject in the first movement, reminded listeners of the jerky back-and-forth head motion of a walking hen.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (m000ztnq)
Béla Bartók (1881-1945)

I Have a New Plan Now

Donald Macleod follows Béla Bartók as he takes his interest in national music in a new direction, with his discovery of folk music.

Bartók’s birthplace, Nagyszentmiklós, was on a geographical border. It’s now Sânnicolau Mare in Romania, close to the borders with Serbia and Hungary and then on the edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In a sense, he lived on a border as well. Bartók played an important role in synthesising the old and the new: he had an ear for the deep-rooted music of the Hungarian people – supposedly timeless and authentic – the music of the past – which he put to use in creating music that was international, challenging and new – music for the present and the future.

Borders Redrawn

Donald Macleod explores Béla Bartók’s life and work in the years after World War I.

In the early weeks of 1918, a virulent strain of influenza was detected among military personnel. It spread and it’s estimated that some 500 million people, a quarter of the population of the world, contracted what was called Spanish ‘Flu. One of them was Bartók. He was confined to bed for almost a month and at times was unable to speak. When he recovered, Hungary was in turmoil in the first of a series of upheavals which would see the borders of the nation redrawn and Bartók’s own uncomfortable position in the spotlight of political life.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (m000zvcf)
Béla Bartók (1881-1945)

A Famous Modern Composer

Donald Macleod looks back on Béla Bartók’s heyday as a performer in the late 1920s.

After being granted a sabbatical from his teaching at the Budapest Academy Bartók was able to realise an ambition he had cherished ever since he had graduated, of undertaking a coast-to-coast concert tour of the USA.

This was against the backdrop of rising nationalism in Europe. Bartok’s inclinations had him swimming against that tide. Romania, where he had been born, was anxious to claim him for its own. He objected to being called a “Romanian composer” and wrote to the author of a radio talk about him who described him in that way: “My creative work just because it arises from three sources – Hungarian, Romanian Slovakian - might be regarded as the embodiment of the very concept of integration so much emphasised in Hungary today… my own idea however – of which I have become fully conscious since I found myself as a composer – is the brotherhood of peoples, brotherhood in spite of all wars and conflicts. I try to the best of my ability to serve this idea in music…”

Punk

Rebellion and causing offence: Shahidha Bari looks at punk and finds that beyond the filth and the fury of the ‘70s music scene, it provided a new vocabulary for artists that’s shaped the cultural scene to the present day, with photographs of the British punk scene on show, a new documentary coming in the autumn and the opening of a play this week drawing on the idea of punk. Shahidha's guests are: Morgan Lloyd Malcolm whose drama, opening in Sheffield, features women in a prison becoming inspired by a punk band; Philip Venables, the classical composer of works including 4:48 Psychosis and Denis and Katya; musician and 6 music broadcaster Tom Robinson, and Radio 3 and AHRC New Generation Thinker Diarmuid Hester, author of Wrong, A Critical Biography of Denis Cooper. They look at figures ranging from Byron and Rimbaud up to The Slits and Derek Jarman. Plus - as Ru Paul's Drag Show returns to TV, Diarmuid Hester considers an earlier portrayal of queer culture in the paintings of Edward Burra.

Typical Girls - Morgan Lloyd Malcolm's play produced by Sheffield Theatres and Clean Break runs from Sept 24th to October 16th

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (m000zvn2)
Béla Bartók (1881-1945)

Continuity and Defiance

Donald Macleod explores Béla Bartók’s decision to leave Europe. But where will he go and how can he possibly leave his mother behind?

Béla Bartók had already been distressed by what he viewed as Hungary’s capitulation to the wishes of Germany, or as he put it “this regime of thieves and murderers.” He also strongly objected to the fact that his publishers, Universal Edition, and the Austrian Performing Rights Society had been “Nazified.” They sent him a form to fill out in which he was asked whether he was “of German blood, of kindred race, or non-Aryan.” Bartók decided that that question would remain unanswered. Meanwhile he became embroiled in a tortuous struggle to wrest his works form Universal and move them to the British firm of Boosey & Hawkes. He wrote to his friend, the violinist Zoltán Székely: “Neither while I am alive nor after my death do I want any German publisher to have any of my work, even if it means that no work of mine will ever be published again. This is for now what is fixed and final.”
