9.30am Building a Library: Lucy Parham on Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor K491

Mozart composed his much-loved Piano Concerto in the winter of 1785-86, shortly before the premiere of the Marriage of Figaro. Despite the compositional proximity of the two works, they reveal very different sides to Mozart's compositional personality, the opera being bright and upbeat while the piano concerto is much darker and is one of only two minor key piano concertos in his entire output. The Piano Concerto in C minor is also different from the earlier concertos because it uses a much larger orchestra including oboes and clarinets. The premiere is thought to have taken place at Vienna's Burgtheater in April 1786. Beethoven is known to have greatly admired Mozart's Piano Concerto No 24 and exclaimed to his friend, Cramer, that he would never be able to do anything like that.

SAT 11:45 Music Matters (m000tm7j)
Music under threat in Kabul

Kate Molleson is joined by musicians in Kabul to discuss the new restrictions on women singing - the ban, from the Afghan Ministry of Education, has caused concern that the Taliban is increasing its influence in the Afghan government as western forces prepare to pull out of the country. With contributions from Ahmad Sarmast, Director of the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, and pianist Maram Abdullah.

Following the death earlier this month of the conductor James Levine, Kate hears from the American music critic Anne Midgette and conductor Kenneth Woods as they discuss the moral questions surrounding Levine’s recorded legacy in the light of the controversy over his personal life.

Ahead of World Autism Awareness Week, Kate talks to Adam Ockleford, who has worked extensively in the field of autism and music, and to Joe Stollery, a composer who regards his own autism as both a help and a hindrance in his musical life.

And, the broadcaster Jennifer Lucy Allan speaks about her new book 'The Foghorn's Lament', which documents the role this coastal 'music' has played in our life and culture.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m000jv9z)
Storytelling, beauty and melancholy in music with composer Isobel Waller-Bridge

TV and film composer Isobel Waller-Bridge leads us through an intriguing selection of pieces that get her thinking about the power music has to create vivid images and to tell stories.

She finds herself dancing with her eyes closed to Erik Satie before realising how stringed instruments can in their own way mimic the emotional impact of voices. She also discovers how a Finnish landscape full of migrating swans can be captured perfectly in music, and plays a song from 1969 that breaks many of the rules of pop to deliver its beautiful, melancholy message.

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

SAT 15:00 Sound of Gaming (m000tm7n)
2021 Bafta Gaming Awards

Louise Blain reflects on this week’s 2021 Bafta Gaming Awards, talking with the nominees and featuring the music - considering them as a possible litmus test on the shape of gaming in the 2020s.

Music featured in the programme is taken from the nominees for the Best Gaming Music category, which are: GHOST OF TSUSHIMA by Ilan Eshkeri, Shigeru Umebayashi, Peter Scaturro; HADES by Darren Korb; THE LAST OF US PART II by Gustavo Santaolalla, Mac Quayle, Scott Hanau; MARVEL’S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES by John Paesano, Scott Hanau, Alex Hackford; ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS by Gareth Coker; and SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE by Jay Waters, Joe Thwaites, Joanna Skorupa.

Nominees for the Game of the Year include ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS which has proved such a hit during a year of lockdown.

Louise looks at these, and more, listing the winners.

In Louise’s words:

"Gaming was such a lifeline for so many people over 2020 and the 2021 British Academy Games Awards nominations reflect that. I don't think many of us would feel quite as connected to friends if we hadn't spent months fishing together in Animal Crossing: New Horizons or sharing the emotional web of The Last of Us Part 2. Vitally, 2020's games are a clear indicator of the diversity possible in this industry. I can't wait to explore the incredible scores nominated in the Best Gaming Music category. From the heroic joy of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the indie sword-spinning action of Hades, these are soundtracks to define a year like no other."

SUN 19:15 Sunday Feature (m000tmhp)
Should Feminists Read Baudelaire?

Charles Baudelaire, the great flaneur and dandy in black, who scandalised 19th century Paris, is the subject of this enquiry by poet, novelist and feminist Michèle Roberts. Being half French herself and a long time reader of Baudelaire’s oplulent, often disquieting poetry, Michèle re-assesses his reputation 200 years after his birth.

"Get drunk! Stay drunk! On wine, virtue, poetry, whatever!"

Perhaps Baudelaire, the enfant terrible of French literature, is being read differently in France today, in the age of #metoo and its French equivalent #balancetonporc. Perhaps the question is even being asked: should feminists read Baudelaire? Is he, as #balancetonporc might say, a ‘swine’? Should his work continue to be revered purely as the transcendent product of genius or should it be understood as rooted in a particular cultural moment, gendered by a particular cultural attitude? Even as we celebrate his birthday, do we notice his position in the canon wobbling a bit?

The programme brings together those who have been inspired by Baudelaire including poet John Cooper Clarke , the self styled ‘Bargain Basement Baudelaire’, American poet Kim Addonizio and Norwegian musician Susanna, who uses his decadent verse, his struggle with debauchery and goodness, as the lyrical backbone of her recent album.

We also hear from French journalist Muriel Zagha and publisher Cecille Lee, and from two of the most inspired Baudelaire academics Professors Helen Abbot and Maria Scott – ready to expose the poet to the fiercest of feminist critiques.

“ Let us beware of common folk, of common sense, of sentiment, of inspiration, and of the obvious.”

Produced by Sara Jane Hall
A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 3.

SUN 20:00 Drama on 3 (m000tmhr)
Constellations and Elegy

Over the last decade Nick Payne's plays have delighted audiences across the world. In this Drama on 3, we bring two of his most acclaimed and moving plays together for the first time. Constellations and Elegy both explore science, time and love.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw and George MacKay star in Constellations, a play about a relationship that plays out in multiple different ways in parallel universes. Marianne and Roland meet at a party. They hit it off, and go for a drink. Or do they? Perhaps they come together and their love story unfolds, or perhaps it's tragically cut short? The play explores how even the smallest change can significantly alter the course we take. It is a spellbinding exploration of the infinite possibility for heartbreak or for hope.

Marianne . . . . . Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Roland . . . . . George MacKay

The play was first performed in 2012 at the Royal Court and went on to win the Evening Standard Best Play Award as well as receiving a nomination for an Olivier Award for Best New Play. It has since been performed across the world.

Elegy stars Juliet Stevenson, Deborah Findlay and Marilyn Nnadebe. It's about a couple who have made a choice between love and survival. Lorna and Carrie met in later life and married. But now they are facing the possibility of their relationship disintegrating in the most painful way. Lorna's brain has been afflicted by an degenerative disease that will soon destroy her. Her partner Carrie is faced with a devastating decision: to submit her beloved wife to an experimental new treatment that risks completely erasing Lorna's memory of the relationship.

Lorna . . . . . Juliet Stevenson
Carrie . . . . . Deborah Findlay
Miriam . . . . . Marilyn Nnadebe

Elegy opened at the Donmar Warehouse in 2016 and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Directed by Sasha Yevtushenko.

Crime and Punishment

Jerry Brotton is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London and wants us to take a fresh look at a period in European history usually associated with beauty, harmony and art. His approach contains a health warning: the Renaissance was a lot darker and violent than many of us have imagined. Retracing the life of Benvenuto Cellini through his shocking autobiography, Jerry reveals how this was a time of conflict as well as beauty, creativity as well as tyranny.

Cellini is imprisoned for over a year in Rome, enduring various attempts on his life before he has a life-changing religious vision. On his release, he kills again and heads for France.

TUE 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (m000tn03)
French Connections: Danny Driver at Wigmore Hall

In a programme which arcs across continents and centuries, Danny Driver explores the links between some of the composers who redefined piano music.

Pictures at an Exhibition, Mussorgsky’s dazzling sequence of miniatures, seems to sum up a lot of what appealed to Claude Debussy about Russian composers: their lack of concern for musical ‘rules’, a penchant for oriental and ancient-sounding modes and vivid colours.

All of these elements found their way into Debussy’s revolutionary Images which go so much further in exploring the piano’s sonic possibilities, music which in turn finds echoes in György Ligeti’s ground-breaking Etudes whose inspiration is drawn from as far afield as Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Danny Driver begins his concert with a composer he says he has only recently come to appreciate. There’s an element of inward-looking intimacy in Fauré’s often modal harmonies, which prefigure Debussy and lend another dimension to the programme.

Recorded earlier this month at Wigmore Hall.

Fauré: Thème et Variations in C sharp minor Op. 73
Debussy: Cloches à travers les feuilles (Images, Series 2)
Fauré: Nocturne No. 6 in D flat Op. 63
György Ligeti: Etude No. 7, Galamb borong (Etudes Book II); Etude No. 5, Arc-en-ciel (Etudes Book I)
Mussorgsky: Pictures from an Exhibition

TUE 22:00 Free Thinking (m000tn05)
Writing about Faith

In Frank Skinner's A Comedian's Prayer Book - the broadcaster presents a series of prayers which read like a stand-up routine exploring questions of belief. A practising Roman Catholic, Skinner's questions include the correct way of addressing God, what it means to be humble, and an unpicking of some of the metaphors used in the Bible. Jeet Thayil was born into a Syrian Christian family in Kerala and his latest novel Names of the Women imagines the New Testament from the viewpoint of the women who became followers of Jesus Christ, from Martha and Mary the sisters of Lazarus to Lydia of Thyatira, who is regarded as the first documented convert to Christianity in Europe. Yaa Gyasi’s second novel is called Transcendent Kingdom and it tells the story of a woman working within science who is negotiating her relationship both with her mother and with her beliefs and background. Laurence Scott talks to these three authors about how they approached writing about faith in fiction and for a mass audience.

Producer: Emma Wallace

You can find a playlist on the Free Thinking website exploring religious belief hearing from speakers including Ziauddin Sardar, Richard Dawkins, Karen Armstrong, Rabbi Sacks, Marilynne Robinson and Rowan Williams. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p03mwxlp

An Anonymous Lover

From MediaCityUK, Salford
Presented by Tom McKinney

The music in tonight's programme was penned within just sixteen years, on the cosmopolitan and interconnected stage of the 18th century, beginning with the overture to "The anonymous lover", one of only two surviving operas of six by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George. Equally famed for his prowess as a fencer, soldier, violinist, composer and concert promoter he was a key figure in French musical life at this time. Mozart's mother died while he was in Paris, and following her death, he lived under same roof as Bologne, for a couple of months before returning to Salzburg. Mozart's early E flat Piano Concerto K 271 was written for a French pianist, Victoire Jenamy, daughter of one of Mozart's theatrical friend, possibly after they had dined out together in Vienna. Haydn designed three symphonies as crowd-pleasers for London and when performances failed to materialise, he offered them for performance in France. Tonight, we feature what's perhaps the most effervescent of the trio. Haydn's six Paris Symphonies would later be premiered by Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-George. To end the concert, Ben Gernon conducts one of Mozart's most majestic symphonies.

Bologne: The anonymous lover, Overture

Haydn: Symphony No 77

Mozart: Piano Concerto No 9 (K 271); Symphony No 28 (K 200)

WED 23:00 Night Tracks (m000p02n)
Music after dark

Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents an adventurous, immersive soundtrack for late-night listening, from classical to contemporary and everything in between. As the nights draw in, Sara invites us to explore with her the musical dimensions of a room. She starts with Alvin Lucier's ground-breaking recording, 'I am sitting in a room', which reappears throughout the programme. She moves from the small, intimate rooms of Durante, in his Concerto in G minor for 2 violins and viola, and the close sound of Nakamura's piano recordings, through John Luther Adams' 'In a Room' to the large, cavernous sound of Terje Isungset's 'Essence of Stone 6', which was recorded in the amazing Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum-Oslo with its extreme 12 second long reverb. As Joan Sutherland sings 'I Dreamt I dwelt in the marble halls', Brian and Roger Eno play from Music for the Marble Palace, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. At midnight we enter the inner sanctum of Solesmes Abbey with its cathedral-like acoustic, the bells toll the hour and the monks sing Gregorian chant. After hearing the reverberant climax of Alvin Lucier's 'I'm sitting in a Room', we return to the intimate quartet writing of Stenhammar and then end looking out of the room as Joan Baez sings Go 'way from my Window.

Stabat Mater

Live from Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, Nicola Heywood Thomas presents a concert in which the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conductor Jac van Steen play two final works by Mahler and Pergolesi, and one by a living composer, Arvo Pärt.

The concert begins with Mahler's final symphony, which was left unfinished at his death. Tonight, we will hear the Adagio from that work in a relatively new chamber arrangement by conductor and composer Michelle Castelletti. Arvo Pärt's meditative Fratres follows, a tintinnabulous work which has no set orchestration, played here by violin soloist Jack Liebeck, alongside the strings and percussion of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. The concert ends with Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's setting of the Stabat Mater. He composed the work in the final weeks of his life, using an incredibly advanced sense of harmony for his time, and combining gravitas with the lightness of his comic operas, creating a truly original work which speaks profoundly across the ages.

Sex and Death

Jerry Brotton is Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London and wants us to take a fresh look at a period in European history usually associated with beauty, harmony and art. His approach contains a health warning: the Renaissance was a lot darker and violent than many of us have imagined. Retracing the life of Benvenuto Cellini through his shocking autobiography, Jerry reveals how this was a time of conflict as well as beauty, creativity as well as tyranny.

At the height of his success, Cellini’s violence and sexual misconduct lead him back to jail. In disgrace he completes another masterpiece, his life-size marble crucifix. It is a final triumph of the Renaissance before his death in 1571.

Lena Platonos’s mixtape

Verity Sharp presents a handcrafted mixtape by the pioneering Greek electronic musician Lena Platonos. Platonos started out as a classical pianist before pioneering the Greek electronic scene of the 1980s. She combines an interest in analogue synthesis with surreal poetry. She says that she listens to music 24 hours a day, with the radio on continually overnight. Her mixtape is a snapshot of this varied sonic universe; hopping from Polish cabaret to electronic psychedelia to a Schubert lieder.

Elsewhere on the show, Verity plays new music by French multi-instrumentalist Colleen and Malian guitarist Samba Touré, as well as a soundtrack by T Griffin for a film that follows the legacy of Mexican architect Luis Barragán. Plus the announcement of the ‘Sound of the Year’ as part of the inaugural Sounds of the Year Awards, presented by the Museum of Sound and The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The awards celebrate everyday sound in all its forms and bring together an international community of sound professionals and enthusiasts.
