A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

Together they tackle new material and classic tunes by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, where both Blanchard and Jean Toussaint started out.

Also in the programme, saxophonist Nubya Garcia, one of the most talked-about players on the current London jazz scene, shares some of the music that inspires and influences her, including a tune by piano great Patrice Rushen.

Produced by Dominic Tyerman for Somethin’ Else.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (m000jn63)
Bizet's Carmen: Glyndebourne Greats

Carmen shocked its original audience. Possibly it was the rawness of the passion and sexual energy that simmers and boils over in this raw drama about freedom, lust and death. From the moment Don Jose picks up the rose thrown at him by the wild cat who works in the local cigarette factory we know we're in for an evening of trouble. It never goes well when a sensitive mummy's boy from the country gets entangled with a feral, death-obsessed femme fatale.

In the second opera in this short season of great performances from the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, this is an opportunity to hear Bizet's masterpiece in a 2002 production that swept away the cliches of a piece that all too often conjures up the fringed shawls and hooped earrings of picture postcard Spain. David McVicar's claustrophobic staging was many miles from sunny Seville, and Anne Sofie von Otter brought a Lieder singer's sensibility to the role of Carmen

Sarah Walker with an intriguing musical mix

Sarah Walker chooses three hours of attractive and uplifting music to complement your morning.

Today, Sarah starts the morning with a ‘hygienic’ prelude from Rossini, finds maturity and genius in a piece that Mendelssohn wrote when he was only 17, and feels the heat in a John Barry score.

Plus, Bach’s energetic ‘Wachet Auf!’ awakens the senses, and a Cuban Overture lifts the spirits.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m000jp9d)
Patricia Wiltshire

Michael Berkeley’s guest is the forensic ecologist Professor Patricia Wiltshire, a solver of puzzles who has carved out a whole new discipline within forensic science. Patricia solves crimes with her microscope by meticulous examination of tiny particles such as pollen and spores left at crime scenes or found on the clothing of criminals or on their victims. She says: ‘Nature will invariably give up her secrets to those of us who know where to look.’

Patricia tells Michael how the course of her life was changed by a phone call from the police asking her to assist on a murder case. She was able to match the pollen left by the shoes of the murderers in their car to the plants where they had dumped the body of their victim, and thus secured their conviction.

Since then she has worked on nearly 300 cases including the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham; the Millie Dowler and Sarah Payne cases; and the Ipswich prostitute murders.

Patricia chooses music by Chopin that she played when she was learning the piano in her 40s, and music by Hasselmans, which expresses her regret at never having learned to play the harp.

We hear Russian ballet music, and a Mozart aria sung by her favourite singer Cecilia Bartoli. Patricia talks movingly about how her grief at the death of her infant daughter allows her to deal with the most distressing aspects of her job.

She describes the happiness she finally found with her second husband at the age of 63 and chooses exuberant flamenco music to celebrate their relationship.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (m000jp9j)
Wagner’s Ring Cycle: the Ultimate Box Set Binge

Tom Service explores classical music’s ultimate binge-listening box set - Richard Wagner’s apocalyptic four-part 16-hour marathon music drama, The Ring.

Cram packed with heroes, heroines, gods and goddesses, it took 25 years to write and has inspired everyone from JRR Tolkein to Francis Ford Coppola, and Bugs Bunny.

Selfishness, deception, hypocrisy, greed, destruction; like all good box sets they’re all in there, but what’s The Ring really about? And what can we, and perhaps today’s world leaders, learn from it?

Tom has half an hour to find out.

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (b04mb49w)
Light

Cheryl Campbell and William Houston are the readers in a montage of music and speech inspired by ideas of light. The programme looks at different aspects of light from a metaphor for love, birth, innocence, and purity; as a fundamental particle of science; as an expression of the presence of the Divine, observations in the diaries of Antarctic traveller Apsley Cherry-Garrard or made about the paintings of JMW Turner, or quite simply, as our evenings become longer, as a marker of the cyclical day. With music by composers including Haydn, Handel, Eric Whitacre, Thomas Adès and John Tavener.

SUN 18:45 Between the Ears (m0000tcr)
The Last Elfdalians

Swedish artist and photographer Maja Daniels explores the mysteries of the endangered Swedish forest language Elfdalian. Maja didn't learn the language herself, but her grandparents speak it and she has long been fascinated by its mysteries.

Spoken in the remote forest region of Älvdalen - a place thick with forest and steep valleys - Elfdalian used to be the main language of the area, but Swedish has increasingly become dominant and few young people speak it today.

In a collage of forest sounds and local voices, travelling through Älvdalen, this programme explores some of the mysteries of the language and its links to Sweden's ancient, Viking past. Maja meets up with young people to hear about new efforts to keep the language alive, and talks to older people who speak it as a first language about how it survived while other ancient European languages did not, and what it can reveal about the people and their culture.

SUN 19:30 Drama on 3 (b01rftt4)
Lungs

A couple are grappling with a dilemma. Should they bring a baby into a world full of uncertainties and anxieties? Duncan Macmillan's raw but funny love story was first produced by Paines Plough and Sheffield Theatres.
The play is performed by Kate O'Flynn and Alistair Cope and directed by Richard Wilson.
Produced for radio by Toby Swift

Lungs was nominated for Best New Play in the Theatre Awards UK in 2012 and subsequently won Best New Play in the 'Offies', the awards for independent theatres in London. Co-produced by Paines Plough, the award-winning touring theatre company specialising exclusively in new plays, and Sheffield Theatres, Lungs was first performed at the Sheffield Crucible as part of the Roundabout season in 2011. The Old Vic's 2019 production was due to open in New York in March this year.

Celebrated actor and director Richard Wilson has been responsible for both the theatre and radio incarnations of this production.

"Richard Wilson's production matches the thrillingly fluid structure of the piece, and Macmillan's script - all nervy half lines and brittle fragments - is astonishingly assured in the way it captures the uncertainty and neuroticism of a pair who seek reassurance that they are 'good people'."
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian.

The Flying Scotsman

We take a journey back in time to recreate the golden age of steam, travelling on the Flying Scotsman from Manchester to Carlisle. We have privileged access to the footplate of this iconic engine which weighs 100 tonnes and is nearly 100 years old. We hear coal being shovelled from the tender into the crackling fire, and the driver operating the train as it speeds along the track at up to 60 miles an hour. The train stops for water and we hear the chatter of the crew. We take a take an almost cinematic journey inside the moving train from carriage to carriage with snatches of the voices of passengers as we go. And we follow a waitress as she collects plates from diners on the train and takes them to the galley kitchen where fine food is prepared. We end our journey in Carlisle where our driver signs off before handing over to another driver for the return journey.

Beethoven Unleashed: Return to Form

Meeting an Old Friend

Donald Macleod is joined by guests Laura Tunbridge and Edward Dusinberre to explore Beethoven’s revolutionary return to the string quartet in the final two years of his life.

Just two years before he died, Beethoven returned to an old treasured form, the string quartet. The five quartets he ended up writing would come to be his final major works, and would change the paradigm beyond recognition. Though dismissed by audiences in their day, their composition is now considered a pivotal moment not only in Beethoven’s life, but in the history of classical music. Donald is joined by musicologist Laura Tunbridge, and violinist Edward Dusinberre of the Takács Quartet, to discuss these extraordinary, watershed works that have bewildered and beguiled listeners ever since their creation. Throughout the week, they focus on each of the five late quartets, uncovering the stories, circumstances and conversations that surround them.

Today, a commission from a Russian Prince and the return of an old friend prompts Beethoven to pick up his sketchbook again, and we hear from the first of the late quartets, Op 127.

Composer of the Week is returning to the story of Beethoven’s life and music throughout 2020 as part of Radio 3’s Beethoven Unleashed season marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (m000jq7v)
Beethoven Unleashed: Return to Form

Thanksgiving

Donald Macleod and his guests Laura Tunbridge and Edward Dusinberre discuss the tumultuous circumstances surrounding Beethoven’s late quartets, and the state of mind they emerged from.

Today, we hear how Beethoven’s financial fretting and a sudden brush with death feed into his writing, with a focus on the second of the late quartets, Op 132.

Composer of the Week is returning to the story of Beethoven’s life and music throughout 2020 as part of Radio 3’s Beethoven Unleashed season marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

Beethoven Unleashed: Return to Form

On the Edge

Donald Macleod, Laura Tunbridge and Edward Dusinberre take a look at how Beethoven’s groundbreaking late string quartets were received by the audiences that first heard them.

There's a suite from Debussy’s shadowy fairy-tale opera Pelléas et Mélisande, arranged by Alain Altinoglu, which receives its UK premiere. And Lisa Batiashvili is the soloist in Szymanowski’s sumptuous Violin Concerto No. 1 - inspired by a poem by the Polish poet Tadeusz Miciński and which includes the words "And now we stand by the lake in crimson blossom, in flowing tears of joy, with rapture and fear...."

Beethoven Unleashed: Return to Form

Elusive Harmony

Donald Macleod is joined again by guests Laura Tunbridge and Edward Dusinberre to uncover the relationships that were important to Beethoven whilst writing his late quartets.

Throughout the week, they focus on each of the five late quartets, uncovering the stories, circumstances and conversations that surround them.

Today, Beethoven’s musical colleagues are the butt of his jokes, and his turbulent relationship with nephew Karl reaches breaking point, as we focus on the fourth of the late quartets, Op 131.

THU 22:00 Free Thinking (m000jnmc)
Tackling Modern Slavery

Naomi Paxton looks at the impact of the 2015 Modern Slavery Act, talking to researchers Katarina Schwarz and Alicia Kidd who are trying to measure and improve its effectiveness.

Katarina Schwarz from the Rights Lab at Nottingham University works with the Wilberforce Institute at the University of Hull on a project looking into what makes people from particular countries vulnerable to being trafficked and exploited, including in the UK.

Over the past five years, over 75% of people identified as potential victims of modern slavery in the UK represent only ten nationalities. The top twenty nationalities make up over 90% of referrals to the authorities. Rights Lab and Wilberforce Institute are working on research that interrogates the legal, policy, economic and social situation in these top 20 countries.

The Wilberforce Institute, together with partners, is working on a project to develop a package of workshops targeted at front line practitioners, businesses, recruitment agencies and NGOs in local areas across the UK. Rather than relying on often dry and theoretical traditional workshops raising awareness on forms of modern slavery, the workshops will be based on real life situations. Alicia Kidd is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute working on this training project.

These projects are part of the work done through the Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre.
This episode of Free Thinking is put together in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council, part of UKRI as one of a series of discussions focusing on new academic research also available to download as New Thinking episodes on the BBC Arts & Ideas podcast feed. Unclassified is a late-night listening party, a place for curious ears to congregate, disconnect from all other devices and get lost in some soothing, serene and strange new sounds. It's a home for composers whose work cannot easily be categorised, artists who are as comfortable in a grimy basement venue as they are in a prestigious concert hall.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (m000jps2)
Beethoven Unleashed: Return to Form

For a Later Age

Donald Macleod explores the enduring power, pathos and innovation of Beethoven’s late string quartets with guests Laura Tunbridge and Edward Dusinberre.

Donald is joined by musicologist Laura Tunbridge, and violinist Edward Dusinberre to discuss these extraordinary, watershed works that have bewildered and beguiled listeners ever since their creation. Throughout the week, they focus on each of the five late quartets, uncovering the stories, circumstances and conversations that surround them.

Today, we hone in on Beethoven’s swansong, Op 135, but also step back and look at how the legend of Beethoven’s so-called ‘late’ period has been cultivated. Our guests offer their experiences of living within this music, and ponder on what these astonishing works have come to mean for us today.

Composer of the Week is returning to the story of Beethoven’s life and music throughout 2020 as part of Radio 3’s Beethoven Unleashed season marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth.

FRI 22:00 The Verb (m000jpsd)
Language Lockdown

A few months ago, writing an email to a colleague that starts 'I hope you are safe in these extraordinary times' would have been an unusual thing to do, but it very quickly became 'the new normal'. This week Ian McMillan and guests look at the many ways in which our language has adapted to fit our new routines, from Zooming with friends to socially distancing in supermarkets.

Rob Drummond, The Verb's resident linguist has been keeping an ear out for the neologisms of our time, and Kate Clanchy presents some of the work written by her students as part of their weekly online poetry classes.

With more time to read, many of us are finding solace in our bookshelves, and discovering new resonances in classic texts. In a piece especially recorded for The Verb, Julie Hesmondhalgh reads from Ruth, by Elizabeth Gaskell, accompanied by Nicholas Howson and Ruth Montgomery from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, just two of the many musicians who have turned their creative energies towards new ways to perform and collaborate.

Presenter: Ian McMillan
Producer: Jessica Treen

FRI 23:00 Late Junction (m000c2lx)
The Rest Is Noise

Verity Sharp listens to the silence in an increasingly noisy world with two hours of music that straddle the divide between noise and quiet. We play pieces that probe the pregnant pause, the hushed tone and the sounds you hear when you are paying attention. We flirt with the emergency tape with tracks from a new compilation called Now That’s What I Call Silence, a home for artists who were rejected by streaming platforms for being “too silent” and feature Japanese Gagaku artists who cherish the idea of ‘ma’, a silence which gives form to composition. We remember the analogue noise of the cassette with Argentine band Reynols who released an album solely comprised of amplified slabs of tape hiss.

Elsewhere Verity plays the French cellist Leila Bordreuil who composes in silence, the data corrupted noise of Brazilian artist Cadu Tenorio and the electronic undertow of Irish musician Maria Somerville.
