SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m000gv5s)
Crunchy chords and heavenly harmonies with organist Rachel Mahon

Organist and soon-to-be Director of Music at Coventry Cathedral, Rachel Mahon blends together a selection of music with a sacred slant, including pieces by Olivier Messiaen, Louis Vierne and Frank Martin.

The mood of reflection continues with a composer from over 800 years ago, Hildegard of Bingen, and with an ethereal recording of Caroline Shaw’s Plan and Elevation by the Attacca Quartet.

But don’t get too comfy, because there are also pyrotechnics from Bach, some naughty rule-breaking from Domenico Scarlatti and a lively improvised dance played by the early music group Joglaresa.

A series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (m000gv61)
Beethoven's Fidelio from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden

The triumph of love, courage and freedom over oppression, tyranny and evil are the eternal themes of Beethoven's only opera, a project close to his heart but which cost him dear in over a decade of revisions and rewrites.

Recorded at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden earlier this month, and the hot ticket of the season, Antonio Pappano conducts a dream team of a cast led by two of the most celebrated singers on today's operatic stage. In a new production by Tobias Kratzer, soprano Lise Davidsen plays Leonore, the devoted wife of Florestan (tenor Jonas Kaufmann), whose love for her wrongly imprisoned husband means she will stop at nothing to ensure his freedom. It causes all sorts of problems, from disguising herself as a man, Fidelio, and having to reject the unwelcome advances of Marzelline, the love-struck jailer's daughter, to courageously risking her life in a touch-and-go mission to free Florestan.

Beethoven's thrilling darkness-to-light journey is presented by Tom Service in conversation with the Rev. Lucy Winkett, including contributions from conductor, cast and director.

Surrounding sounds

Corey Mwamba shares improvised music that’s inspired by place. Trumpeter Byron Wallen’s new album Portrait emerged from time sitting in a square in Woolwich, reflecting on the community around him, with its mixture of Nepalese elders, Somali mothers and descendants of dockworkers. Tom Ward and Tim Fairhall’s latest record was created during a week in a bothy on the isle of Eigg, with squeaky stove doors and murmuring wind and waves finding their way into their spontaneous creations.

Plus, music for ocarina from Mexico, a live recording from Fredrik Nordström NEEDS at the Stockholm Jazz Festival, and solo guitar music improvised to silent films by Dada/Surrealist artist Man Ray.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m0003sg1)
Uta Frith

For forty years, Uta Frith has dedicated her life to understanding the enigma of autism; she was one of the first neuroscientists to recognise autism as a condition of the brain, rather than the result of cold parenting. She works at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London, alongside her husband, Chris Frith, who’s a specialist in mapping the brain through neuro-imaging. Elected to the Royal Society in 2005, she’s passionate about encouraging more women into careers in science.

When Professor Frith first published her influential research into autism in the 1980s, she says it evoked “strong emotional reactions”, and autism remains controversial today, as it is increasingly viewed not as a disability, but as simply a different way of seeing the world. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Uta Frith talks about the little boy she met very early on in her research who inspired her, and about why autism is so fascinating – because of what it reveals about the mystery of human communication.

Music choices include works by Smetana, Hildegard von Bingen and Beethoven, a Berlin cabaret song from the 1920s, and a work by Professor Frith's great female role model, Clara Schumann.

Close Harmony

From Corsican polyphony to Jacob Collier, 50s rock and roll and global hit TV series Glee, close harmony runs through music traditions around the world: but nowhere is it more important than in Barbershop, famous for its striped waistcoats, bow ties, and comedy parodies. But today over 70,000 singers of all ages and genders participate in barbershop societies around the world, coming together to compete and perform in quartets and larger choruses, enjoying its exuberant and expressive performance style, and revelling in its magical 'overtones'.

With Brian Lynch from the Barbershop Harmony Society in Nashville and members of the BBC Singers, Tom explores what makes it so unique, from it's vocal setting to its use of 'just intonation', and discovers the roots of its history, far from the exclusive Ivy League world it's thought to represent.

Metal

Jemima Rooper and Ewan Bailey read works relating to metallic elements in our bodies, our jobs and our land from authors including Wilfred Owen, Afua Cooper & Homer set to music by composers including Shostakovich, Sanna Kurki-Suonio and Kraftwerk.

We'll meet the people who work with it - blacksmiths in operas by Verdi and Franz Schreker and foundry workers in Henry Green's novel Living. Metal can make extraordinary sounds too, whether it's being blown through by a brass quartet playing a funeral march by Edvard Grieg, or struck to create a clangorous John Cage soundscape. But there's a darker side to metal as well - whether it's the lust for gold inspiring acts of cruelty by Spanish conquistadors in John Adams's El Dorado, or the terrible fate, described by Lavinia Greenlaw, of the young women who painted luminous clock faces and were poisoned by radium.

My Mother and Me

The Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson grew up in the theatre with an actress-mother who attuned him to what he calls "the realness of fakeness."

The story goes that Ragnar was conceived during the filming of a sex scene involving his actor-parents, quaint footage of which was part of an installation during his acclaimed retrospective at the Barbican in 2016. And Kjartansson's mother has been central to his work, in a series of films recorded every five years, called 'Me and My Mother'.

As an adult, he discovered that what held him was the situation created on stage, rather than the narrative: "I became interested in creating these situations that are sculptural," he explains of his move into performance art.

In this 'radio happening' by the acclaimed Brooklyn-based Danish poet and producer Pejk Malinovski, we mirror in sound the highly staged expression of Kjartansson's art, the central relationship with his mother, his humour and heart.

New Generation Thinkers: The Endless Demise of the High Street

With the rise of internet shopping, high rental rates and declining footfall, it appears that the end is nigh for our high streets. But the end has been nigh for at least the last 50 years and yet still it keeps re-inventing itself. Dr Jade Halbert goes back to her native Glasgow to speak to people who fear that this time there may well be a wolf at the door and others who believe that a revolution is coming which will mean a re-think, but not necessarily the death, of the high street as we've come to know it.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Schooldays

This week of programmes about Franz Schubert focuses on five years through his short life, and features one of his string quartets every day.

At the age of only 16 the shy, bespectacled Schubert was at school. Yet he was not concentrating on his main studies, being far too distracted by music, much to the disappointment of his father. Today's programme focuses on the year 1813 in Schubert's life, and we hear his String Quartet No.10, D87. Other music includes settings of songs by Schiller and Körner, an opera aria, and movements from his first symphony. Plus we learn about Schubert's sudden rage over his singing rather loudly in a tavern. Presented by Donald Macleod.

MON 22:45 The Essay (m000gt4k)
Paul Robeson in Five Songs

1. No More Auction Block

The life and struggle of Paul Robeson through song. Robeson's epic journey traversed multiple musical forms beginning with the Negro Spirituals. At the height of the Harlem Renaissance, in 1925, Robeson and his accompanist Lawrence Brown turned them into art music. For white audiences these performances came as a revelation. For some black writers and artists there was ambivalence, anxiety that the spirituals described an abject existence they sought to reforge. Shana Redmond, scholar and professor of black music, culture and politics at UCLA explores the ways in which Robeson's performances of No More Auction Block map his own struggles

"The spirituals are not simply a musical form for Robeson; they are his story. The son of a once enslaved man who seized his freedom, Robeson lived in a home where the songs of his people and the gospel of his father’s church commingled, developing a rich, melodious demand for freedom."

This week of programmes about Franz Schubert focuses on five years through his short life, and features one of his string quartets every day.

In 1816, a year in which he made his first money from composing, 19-year-old Schubert was locked in a room and forced to compose by his 'friends', friends who went on to encourage him to leave his teaching work and devote himself to music.

We hear one of the songs he gifted to his first love (sadly not resulting in the marriage he longed for), part of an early setting of the Mass, settings of poems by Goethe, and his eleventh String Quartet.

TUE 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (m000gw6p)
Lammermuir Festival (1/4)

Kate Molleson presents the first of four Lunchtime Concerts from the award-winning Lammermuir Festival. Recorded during the festival’s 10th anniversary year and featuring their resident artists, Quatuor Mosaïques, these concerts take Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ quartets as their backbone and compliment them with works by Haydn and Mozart.
The series starts with Beethoven’s String Quartet in F minor Op 95, which was the last of his middle period quartets that included the three ‘Razumovsky’ quartets. The ‘Serioso’ was a compact and daring composition for the time, one that hinted at the direction Beethoven was to take in his late quartets.
The Lunchtime Concert begins, suitably enough, with a sunrise; the solo violin gently rises from the introductory chord of Haydn’s ever-popular String Quartet Op 76, No 4.

Haydn: String Quartet Op 76, No 4 ‘Sunrise’

Paul Robeson in Five Songs

2. Ol' Man River

Susan Robeson tells a story both the personal and the political through the song that is forever identified with her grandfather, Ol’ Man River. Written expressly for him in 1927 by Hammerstein and Kern for their ground breaking musical Show Boat, Robeson would not wrap his unique voice around it until he was relocated in London the next year. It was a song he would go on to have a lasting and complex relationship with as a black superstar performing for white audiences
“My grandfather transformed Ol’ Man River from a song of submission and despair into a song of resistance. It became an anthem embodying his spirit. When Paul sang his version of Ol’ Man River the message was clear: systems of oppression cannot silence or destroy me.”

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Friends and unfinished business

This week of programmes about Franz Schubert focuses on five years through his short life, and features one of his string quartets every day.

Today the focus is on the year 1820, when Schubert was aged 23. Donald Macleod looks into Schubert's friendships, people who rallied round helping him out, including paying his rent whilst he worked on establishing himself as a freelance composer. However, some of his friends cheerfully began calling him "The Tyrant" due to Schubert's tendency to occasionally respond to these kindnesses harshly; they began to see a different side to his nature.

Music featured includes an extract from two unfinished works, his oratorio Lazarus and the Quartet Movement in C minor. Plus we hear one of the best loved of all Schubert's Goethe settings, Erlkönig, which was first performed in this year, and the glorious Song of the Spirits Over the Waters.

WED 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (m000gtvp)
Lammermuir Festival (2/4)

Period instrument specialists, Quatuor Mosaïques, return for the second Lunchtime concert from the Lammermuir Festival. The festival is held during September in a host of historic venues dotted around the rolling countryside of East Lothian. Today’s highlights were recorded at Chalmers Memorial Church in Port Seton and St. Mary’s Parish Church in Whitekirk.
The reason for Mozart composing his Adagio and Fugue K.546 is unclear, but possibly spurred by the need to earn some money, Mozart reworked one of his earlier keyboard duets (K.426) for strings, prefaced it with a brief adagio and had it published. The ominous start quickly gives way to the fugue which, in contrast, is relentless to the end. This is followed by Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major Op 59, No 1.
Commissioned in 1806 by Prince Razumovsky, the Russian ambassador to Vienna, the ambition and intricacy displayed in the ‘Razumovsky’ quartets resulted in a largely negative reception from critics, but Beethoven was defiant, stating that “they are not for you, but for a later age”.

WED 22:45 The Essay (m000gtw7)
Paul Robeson in Five Songs

3. The Canoe Song

Paul Robeson and film should have been a perfect fit-the 20th century’s first black superstar had everything. Presence, voice and fierce screen intelligence that projected from the screen. British audiences adored him, ‘Our Paul’ they called him but for Robeson cinema was a constant betrayal of his political idealism and desire to escape the prism of race. Matthew Sweet considers the confusing threads that make up the 1935 empire flag waver Sanders of the River, which still hummed to the astonishing power of Robeson’s voice in the Canoe Song.

It took several Hungarian impresarios, an Edwardian songsmith, a Polish Jewish genius of the Berlin cabaret scene and Paul Robeson to make Sanders of the River. A retrograde fantasy of British imperial rule in far-flung Africa, shot largely on the banks of the River Thames. But when Paul Robeson sang the Canoe Song audiences adored him as ‘our Paul’. Matthew Sweet revisits the contradictory ways Robeson, cinema and song intersected.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Joyless and friendless

This week of programmes about Franz Schubert focuses on five years through his short life, and features one of his string quartets every day.

In this programme, Donald Macleod takes a look at Schubert's life in the year 1824. Aged 27, Schubert was suffering from symptoms of syphilis, as well as episodes of despair and depression. We hear how his father encouraged him to persevere through his suffering, and Schubert was able to take the sorrow and melancholy he was feeling through into his music.

That music in this programme includes Schubert's Rosamunde String Quartet, some of his "Grand Duo" Sonata for piano four hands, and - proof of his composition speed - his setting of Gebet for vocal quartet, commissioned in the morning and performed in the evening of the very same day.

Lammermuir Festival (3/4)

Since Quatuor Mosaïques met, performing with Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s ‘Concentus Musicus’ in the 1980s, they have spent over 30 years honing their craft on period instruments. In September, they returned to The Lammermuir Festival as resident artists to perform all of Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ quartets and today we hear the second – his String Quartet in E minor Op 59, No 2. With its startling opening chords and volatile digressions, it’s easy to see why some musicians struggled with the direction that Beethoven was taking the quartet form.
Today’s Lunchtime Concert starts with a Haydn quartet recorded in the mediaeval surroundings of St. Mary’s Parish Church, Whitekirk. His String Quartet in E flat major Op 64, No 6 is radiant and mellow, developing into a finale that is a tour de force of wit and virtuosity.

THU 22:45 The Essay (m000gv2w)
Paul Robeson in Five Songs

4. Zog Nit Keynmol

When Paul Robeson stood before a Moscow audience on the evening of June 14, 1949, in the Tchaikowski Hall, few there expected to hear him to perform the Yiddish Partisan song Zog Nit Keynmol (Never Say). His rendition of this fierce anthem of defiance, composed in the middle of Nazi slaughter, was thick with emotion and at the end the crowd either fiercely applauded or booed. Robeson had sung for those he knew were already murdered imprisoned or facing death as a new wave of Stalinist repression was underway against Soviet Jews. Performer Tayo Aluko explores Robeson’s torment and contradictory emotions that make this performance so dramatic.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09kqfw4)
Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Penniless and ill

This week of programmes about Franz Schubert focuses on five years through his short life, and feature one of his string quartets every day.

In 1826, Schubert was only two years away from his untimely death at the age of 31. Three of his close friends married in this year, whilst he remained single. In this year Schubert was short of money, suffering manic-depression and syphilis, and smoking and drinking heavily. But we hear, in a passionate outburst, his declaration: "I am Schubert....who has written great things and beautiful things... and who is going to write still more beautiful things..."

This programme, presented by Donald Macleod, features Schubert's monumental final string quartet, plus his setting of Goethe's poignant "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt" - "None but the Lonely Heart".

Kate Molleson presents the final Lunchtime Concerts featuring Austria’s leading period instrument quartet, Quatuor Mosaïques. Today’s concert was recorded in Crichton Collegiate Church as part of the Lammermuir Festival in 2019. The concert starts with the most famous of Haydn's six quartets of 1793, his String Quartet in G minor Op 59, No 3. It is known as the 'Rider' thanks to the bouncy theme in the last movement.
Quatuor Mosaïques round off our visit to the Lammermuir Festival with the third of Beethoven's 'Razumovsky' quartets. Incendiary music that, at the time, challenged players and audience alike.

FRI 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (m000h206)
Sakari Oramo's Sibelius Cycle: Symphonies 2 and 7

Twenty-five years separate Sibelius's Second and Seventh symphonies, but that hardly hints at the growth in his musical style: No 2 rich, romantic and the work that sealed his international reputation; No 7 a powerful study, in one movement, of organic musical growth. Together, they conclude Sakari Oramo's Sibelius symphony cycle with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in the 2017-18 season. Luonnotar (1913) from mid-way between the two is a magical creation-story for soprano and orchestra and finds Anu Komsi the soloist - in a work premiered in Gloucester. no less! Aarre Merikanto's Ekho (1922), a perfect, beautiful work makes an ideal partner to Luonnotar - and Komsi is a superb exponent of this vocally taxing score, having already made a magnificent recording of the piece.

FRI 23:00 Late Junction (m000gvxj)
Abel Selaocoe and Sarathy Korwar in session

Abel Selaocoe and Sarathy Korwar, two musicians who have never met before, come together for a stellar improvised session.

Cellist and vocalist Abel Selaocoe was raised in a township outside Johannesburg, and picked up his first cello aged 11. The instrument was shared by other children at his school, however, so he learned to play by using a broom as an imaginary bow. After gaining a musical scholarship to a prestigious school in South Africa, he went on to attend the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. His collaborative work since has seen him perform music influenced by classical, jazz, and folk traditions at non-traditional venues.

Percussionist Sarathy Korwar was born in the USA, grew up in Chennai, and is now a key fixture on the London jazz scene. As composer and bandleader he fuses traditional Indian music with contemporary improvisation, electronica, spoken word and field recordings. He has two innovative and acclaimed solo albums under his belt.

Also tonight, your host Verity Sharp plays words and music from radical jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor, who passed away two years ago this week.
