SAT 11:45 Music Matters (m000cbby)
The 21st century comes of age

As the second decade of this century draws to a close Tom Service talks to the composer Steve Reich at his upstate New York home about emotion in music, his love for J.S. Bach and the creative thought process as he writes a new work for the autumn of 2021. With 2020 and a big birthday for Ludwig van Beethoven around the corner, violinist James Ehnes speaks to Tom about how the music of Beethoven continues to surprise. And as we approach the third decade of the new millennium – our 21st century is fresh out of its painful adolescence – Tom hears from composer Gerald Barry, the Director of Music at London's Southbank Centre, Gillian Moore, the vocal and movement artist and composer Elaine Mitchener, and the Creative Director of the Aurora Orchestra, Jane Mitchell, for their take on the creative classical music temperature of the third millennium – so far...

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m000cbc1)
Beautiful bass lines with contrabassoonist Margaret Cookhorn

Bassoonist and principal contrabassoonist of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Margaret Cookhorn appreciates the constantly shifting harmony in Debussy’s String Quartet, marvels at the space created by the expansive bass line in a Bill Frisell track, is gripped by Rachmaninov’s bold start to his Piano Prelude in C sharp minor, and wants to dance in the studio to some iconic Motown bassoon playing.

She also attempts to decipher why a piece by Grieg sparked a sadness in her for years, and reveals music by Beethoven which is a joy to play as a bassoonist as it actually has some fast notes. Plus, a Scarlatti fugue for harpsichord with an interesting feline connection.

At 2pm Margaret reveals her Must Listen piece - a dramatic work which unfolds slowly and inexorably with the timpani at its heart.

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

From the Met

Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades

Pushkin's short story of avarice inspired some of Tchaikovsky's greatest music, full of psychological insight, drama and tension. Late 18th-century St Petersburg: an impoverished army officer determines to find the secret of the cards and thus both ensure a wealthy future and guarantee his illicit lover Lisa's hand in marriage. But Herman's addiction to gambling quickly becomes an uncontrollable and all-consuming obsession. Convinced that Lisa's grandmother, an elderly countess, knows the mysterious winning combination of cards, she dies of fright as he threatens her with a pistol. It's not long before Lisa and then Herman himself are both dead by their own hands.

As ever, the Met fields a starry international cast, including soprano-of-the-moment Norwegian Lise Davidsen.

Presented from the Met by Mary Jo Heath and commentator Ira Siff.

SUN 23:30 Slow Radio (m000c9yg)
Thames

Field recordist Ian Rawes embarks on a journey in sound along the Thames from Tower Bridge to the North Sea.

It begins inside the north bascule chamber of Tower Bridge, a brick-lined void where we hear the descent and raising of a huge counterweight.

Next we hear the wash of passing boats at an old coal jetty in Greenwich, then the clattering of flagpoles in the wind at the mouth of the Royal Albert Dock. Since the recording was made, the flagpoles have been removed during the Dock's redevelopment into a marina surrounded by new housing. Further east, there are the bangs and pops of a clay pigeon range on the Dartford Marshes heard from across the river. They're among the last audible survivors of the river's gunpowder age of wildfowling and cannon batteries.

The river matures into an estuary at the start of Sea Reach by Canvey Island, where repeated blasts of an oil refinery's siren make a vast and mournful noise. Pigeons coo and scuffle in a derelict building on the Kent shore as a prelude to the abundant sounds of wild fowl and insects on the Allhallows Marshes on a bright summer's afternoon.

Waves lap quietly at the shore before night falls, then a marsh frogs' chorus joins the deep hum of container ships passing to and from the deepwater docks at Tilbury. Along the estuary the sounds of nature are always intermingled with those of industry and transport, perhaps prophetic of the future of the natural world in general.

The journey ends at low tide on the Maplin Sands in Essex, a quiet wasteland of puddles and worm casts stretching to the horizon.

TUE 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (m000ccl9)
Salzburg Festival - Brahms, Joachim and Ravel

Sarah Walker presents highlights from the 2019 Salzburg Festival.

This Summer's theme was 'Time with Enescu' charting the life and times of Romanian musician and composer Georrge Enescu across the last years of the nineteenth century into the first half of the twentieth.

Conductor and pianist, Enescu is best known as a violinist and composer and it’s no wonder that his chamber works written for violin are landmarks in the twentieth century repertoire.

Brahms was Enescu's first musical hero as he was sent to study music in Vienna aged just seven in 1888, and although later in life Wagner's music also influenced Enescu, Brahms is never far away.

When Enescu left Vienna, still only a teenager, he was drawn to ever fashionable fin-de-siecle Paris, and enrolled in composition classes where he joined his contemporary Maurice Ravel.

Chief Conductor Omer Meir Wellber shares his vision of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony with the BBC Philharmonic for the first time. It was written while Bruckner was at his most energetic and confident and was started soon after he'd completed his Sixth. Wagner died while he was writing the slow movement which became an elegy for his friend. Vadim Gluzman, Elsbeth Moser and Johannes Moser join the BBC Philharmonic for Sofia Gubaidulina's Triple Concerto, another work which explores the spiritual side of life. In her programme note she says "When the title of a work reflects the work's essence, the title becomes a symbol" and she says how this work reflects "three-ness" - three soloists, three parts to the work and the use of simple triads in the texture of the piece.

World Premiere of Christmas Music

The Three Choirs Festival is the oldest non-competitive music festival in the world, and in their 2019 season, Bob Chilcott’s Christmas Oratorio received its world premiere. The performance included distinguished soloists such as Dame Sarah Connolly, and the festival’s artistic director Adrian Partington conducted singers from the choirs of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester cathedrals. The festival commissioned this work from Chilcott, and it is a retelling of the Christmas story using texts from the Gospels of St Luke and St Matthew, intertwined with poetry and four hymns. The concert also includes Britten’s festive Ceremony of Carols. It was written whilst the composer journeyed by boat between the United States and England in 1942. A very dangerous crossing to make, whilst German U boats patrolled the Atlantic Ocean.

Recorded at Gloucester Cathedral in August, and presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas.

The Strange Case of the Huge Country Pile

Nosing around Osterley House, currently owned and run by the National Trust, Matthew Sweet and guests discuss our enduring fascination with the grand country estate.

Countless stories, films and plays are set in the rarefied and actually very rare setting of the country estate, a world of valets and scullery maids, viscounts and self-mades, Kind Hearts and Coronets. This year has seen the TV series Downtown Abbey become a film. Every weekend hundreds of thousands of us visit the former homes of the 1% to gawp at the gardens and taste the tea. Have they become a place of reflection, of societal introspection where history was conceived and carved into the plaster? Or is it more about the lovely chutney and special scones? And what might visitors a hundred years from now expect to see about the current period of these houses' history?

FRI 06:30 Breakfast (m000ccl0)
Breakfast Carol Competition Results

Live from Maida Vale Studios in London, Petroc Trelawny presents Radio 3's classical breakfast show and announces the winner of the 2019 Radio 3 Breakfast Carol Competition. Earlier this year, amateur composers were challenged to create new music for a specially commissioned poem – Come to the Child - by Imtiaz Dharker. Hundreds of entries were whittled down to just 6 by a panel of expert judges, including the Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Singers Bob Chilcott. For the last week, listeners have been voting for their favourite, and the winner of the most votes will be revealed by Petroc during the last hour of the programme. He is joined by the BBC Singers, conducted by Bob Chilcott, who will perform the winning carol live, as well as some traditional Christmas favourites.
The winning competition carol will be broadcast throughout the Christmas period as part of the seasonal celebrations on BBC Radio 3.

The weight of expectation

Donald Macleod looks at why Brahms sought solitude and how it came to influence his music.

Brahms was a deeply private man and very guarded about his life, his friends and his feelings. Across this week, Donald goes “Behind Closed Doors” with Brahms to discover what really made him tick. He finds friends, mentors and lovers along the way who together help solve the enigma of the composer.

Throughout his life, there was a great expectation placed on Brahms’s shoulders. Today we look at how that shaped his character and music.

FRI 16:30 The Listening Service (m0001ss8)
The Nutcracker - Strange Enchantments

Think of The Nutcracker as a super-saccharine classic for the feel-good season? Think again. Is everything really all sweetness and light in the world of sugar-plum fairy? No! But don't let the tale's dark undertones spoil your enjoyment of the wonderful music.

Tom Service tears the gaudy wrapping paper from Tchaikovsky's balletic masterpiece to remind us you don't always get what you want. Behind the tinsel and fluffy snowflakes lies a story imbued with darkness and death. But maybe that is the secret of its unfading allure and beauty.

Tom is joined by Marina Frolova-Walker and Peggy Reynolds to crack the most popular nut in the repertoire.
