SAT 12:30 This Classical Life (m0004dnr)
Jess Gillam with... Sam Becker

Jess Gillam presents her new show, with the double and electric bass player Sam Becker, who co-presented the BBC Young Musician podcast with Jess in 2018. The tracks they share with each other range from Debussy's Sarabande to David Bowie's Heroes, and from Dowland's Flow my teares to serpentwithfeet's take on Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique.

From musical beginnings in a carnival band, to being the first ever saxophone finalist in BBC Young Musician, and appearances at the Last Night of the Proms in 2018 and at this year’s BAFTA awards, Jess is one of today’s most engaging and charismatic classical performers. Each week on This Classical Life, she is joined by another young musician to swap tracks and share musical discoveries across a wide range of styles, revealing how music shapes their everyday lives.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m0001zpm)
Pianist and conductor Lars Vogt on a search for truth in music

Lars Vogt reveals how the combination of Josef Haydn and conductor Sir Roger Norrington is a perfect and witty match, and is amazed by the intimacy brought to the music of J.S. Bach by his friend, the violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Lars also plays a barn-storming track by jazz pianist Art Tatum and describes how the spirit of his former piano teacher Karl-Heinz Kämmerling guides him as he plays.

At 2pm Lars brings us his Must Listen piece, going back 80 years to hear how fast (or slow) Dvorak really wanted his music to be.

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.

This varied conspectus of 20th-century English choral music opens with the setting of lines by the then Poet Laureate, John Masefield, that Walton composed for the unveiling of the church’s Henry Wood memorial window in 1946, and is brought up to date with a new commission by Joanna Lee, At this man’s hand, setting the verse by Masefield that is inscribed on the window itself.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m0007q5m)
Hannah Sullivan

Earlier this year, when Hannah Sullivan won the biggest prize in the poetry world, the TS Eliot Prize, the chair of the judges announced: “A star is born. Where has she come from?” Such a prestigious prize is a rare honour, as the book, Three Poems, was Hannah Sullivan’s first published collection. Up until then, she’d established a successful academic career, studying at Cambridge, teaching at Harvard and for the last seven years at New College Oxford, where she’s an Associate Professor of English.

In Private Passions, Hannah Sullivan talks to Michael Berkeley about the time in New York which inspired her prize-winning poems, and why she wanted to capture what it’s like to be alone and vulnerable in a strange city. She reads from a new poem about Grenfell Tower, which will be published next year. And she reveals a passion for Nina Simone. Other music choices include Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier”, the Dvorak Cello Concerto, the Schubert String Quintet, and a setting of a poem by Thomas Campion so perfect she wishes she’d written it: “What is love but mourning?”

Proms at … Cadogan Hall 4: Aris Quartet

BBC Proms: the Aris Quartet play Haydn's ' Sunrise' Quartet and youthful works by Schubert and Haydn's Venetian contemporary, Maddalena Laura Sirmen.

Franz Schubert: String Quartet No. 1
Maddalena Laura Sirmen: String Quartet No. 5 in F minor
Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in B flat major, 'Sunrise'

Aris Quartet

Praised for their suppleness of sound, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists the Aris Quartet make their Proms debut with Haydn’s ebullient ‘Sunrise’ Quartet – nicknamed for the beautiful climbing phrase with which it opens.

This late, great work is paired with two youthful pieces: Schubert’s quietly innovative String Quartet No. 1, and the String Quartet No. 5 by Maddalena Laura Sirmen (born Lombardini) – the 18th-century violin virtuoso and pupil of Tartini, whose career was a defiant exception in a male-dominated profession.

SUN 14:00 The Early Music Show (b08c2n8h)
Bach's Orchestral Suites

Hannah French looks in depth at JS Bach's four orchestral suites, which play something of a Cinderella role to the Brandenburg Concertos. Though they are some of Bach's most festive works, they remain an incomplete set, never published, or even considered a collection in his lifetime. Basically, they are suites of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual. Telemann left us with 135 examples, Graupner 85 and Fasch a neat 100, so why did such a prolific and accomplished composer as Bach shun the genre? Hannah delves into some of the many recordings of the pieces to find out.

Sir Antonio Pappano (conductor)

Celebrated American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is reunited with regular collaborator Sir Antonio Pappano to mark the 150th anniversary of Berlioz’s death with a performance of the composer’s sumptuous orchestral song-cycle Les nuits d’été – a musical journey from springtime love to cruellest loss.

The National Youth Orchestra of the USA undertakes a journey of quite a different kind in Strauss’s monumental An Alpine Symphony, whose vast orchestral forces and massive soundscapes conjure up the craggy drama of the Bavarian Alps.

The concert opens with 'Occidentalis' a new work, by Benjamin Beckman, one of the NYO-USA’s two Apprentice Composers.

Life Rafts

Life Rafts can be made of anything – from an empty honey jar to a planet called Earth. Stowaways on rafts can have unexpected consequences. Rafters require common sense on board. Strictly Speaking. That said, Life Rafts are good for most things. A few bits and pieces of suitable strength and buoyancy properly lashed together will provide hours of splashy pleasure on a shallow pond or stream. Or, on the right current, get you across the Pacific. They can certainly make the difference between life and death – just ask a Fire Ant. Or Noah. Or yourself. With music from David Fanshawe, Baaba Maal, Joao Gilberto, Rachel Porter, Elena Kats-Chernin, Herbie Hancock and more.

With the voices of Alia Alzougbi and Shaun Mason.

Rafael Payare (conductor)

Belfast's Ulster Orchestra and its dynamic music director Rafael Payare present the Proms premiere of Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto, performed here by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Mariam Batsashvili.
Begun when the then Clara Wieck was just 13 years old, it’s a work whose mellow mood and lyrical melodies conceal no little technical intricacy and formal innovation.
Sunny good humour also runs through both Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 – famously described as a musical 'comedy of manners' – and Shostakovich's First Symphony, lively with satirical wit and mischief.

Louise Alder (soprano)
Gary Matthewman (piano)

As we reach the 19th century in our Monday lunchtime survey of music spanning over 800 years, soprano Louis Alder and pianist Gary Matthewman present a recital of songs from across Europe, including Lieder by Schubert, and by both Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny (published under her married name of Hensel), whose final song, ‘Bergeslust’ – completed just a day before her death at the age of only 41 – tempers joy with a poignant ending.

The many facets of love are exposed in Felix Mendelssohn’s ‘Der Mond’ and ‘Neue Liebe’, as well as in Chopin’s ‘Sliczny chłopiec’ (Handsome Lad) and songs by Liszt and Rossini.

Semyon Bychkov (conductor)

Semyon Bychkov traces the evolution and genealogy of Austro-German music in a fascinating Prom featuring three works from three different centuries.

Schubert’s influence on Mahler is clear from the weary loveliness and fretful anxiety of Einsamkeit (‘Loneliness’), heard here in an elegant orchestration by contemporary composer Detlev Glanert.

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, bright with sleigh bells and innocent wonder, glances back to Classical models from the vantage point of fin-de-siècle Vienna, while Glanert takes Brahms’s Fourth Symphony into the 21st century in his lyrical Weites Land (‘Open Land’).

Followed by performances by the Aurora Orchestra of works by winners of the Proms Inspire Competition.

A Cow a Day

the poet and radio producer Pejk Malinovski picks out a cow at random and starts to follow her. He continues to follow her until sunset.

The cow was here long before man arrived. Does the fact that human beings have maths, space travel and doughnuts really make us superior to all other beings on earth? What does the cow have that we don't have? Four stomachs. Hooves. A lot of patience.

A meditative journey unfolds within the sonic backdrop of the ancient city of Varanasi - until suddenly the two of them find themselves on the set of a Bollywood dance film.

A consideration of the nature of radio, a pondering of inter-species relationships, Pejk's programme invites you to un-follow your digital stream and exercise your ability to be just present.

Written and produced by Pejk Malinovski.

Forest Folk

The folk singer, Nancy Kerr joins Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough for a walk in the woods. Forests play a vital role in folk music, as a refuge for romantic outlaws, as a metaphor for freedom and as a space for sexual couplings, usually with the traditionally tragic ending.

Nancy explains how the early folk song collectors such as Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan Williams found a vibrant folk vocabulary bristling with bushes and briars, stout oaks and wily willows. She understands just how powerfully symbolic trees and forests can be, composing her own songs of the woods and interpreting classic tales of sylvan sensuality.

TUE 13:00 Composer of the Week (b088jc2q)
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799)

An American in Paris

Presented by Donald Macleod

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges began life in 1745 as the illegitimate son of a Guadeloupe plantation owner and an African slave, going on to become one of the most fashionable people in Paris. Not only was he a composer and virtuosic violinist, but also a notable athlete, gaining much renown at fencing. His music teachers included Leclair and Gossec, and he would eventually take over conducting the Concert des Amateurs, an orchestra that frequently premiered his violin concertos with Saint-Georges as the soloist. The Concert des Amateurs went on to become one of the best orchestras in Europe under his direction. Saint-Georges also founded La Loge Olympique, which commissioned Haydn's Paris symphonies. His connections with royalty and the aristocracy would eventually lead him into trouble during the French Revolution. Although appointed Colonel of the Legion of Americans, he remained under suspicion and was eventually imprisoned for over a year. He ended his days in a Paris he hardly recognised, and died in 1799.

Joseph learned the violin from an early age, tutored by a man called Plato, his father's plantation manager in Guadeloupe. He went on to become not only a brilliant violinist, but also would compose many works for his instrument in different combinations.

By 1749 Saint-Georges and his family had moved to Paris where he soon found himself enrolled at a specialist fencing school run by Nicholas Texier de La Boëssière, inventor of the fencing mask. The young Joseph took to fencing immediately, and would not only become a celebrated composer with many aristocratic patrons, but also one of the leading fencers of his day in all of France.

Forests

Outlaws of the Forest

Forests are the perfect place for outlaw artists to enact their vision. Just fourteen stops from Soho on the Central Line, Epping Forest provides a particularly convenient place to lose yourself and hide from worldly distractions.

Sculptor, Jacob Epstein used Epping as artistic inspiration and venue for innumerable affairs. But was he lost in the forest or hiding there? John Clare was incarcerated there in an asylum, a place where he lost his status as the peasant poet but found a new identity. First he believed himself to be Lord Byron, latterly he was William Shakespeare. Skip forward a hundred years and the forest continued to intrigue, sheltering the Punk collective, Crass from Big Bang London and providing a surreal playground for theatrical provocateur and forest pixie, Ken Campbell.

Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough is joined on a walk through the artistic hotspots of Epping Forest by Will Ashon, author of 'Strange Labyrinth', a cultural guidebook to the lungs of North-East London.

Sarathy Korwar on Indian hip hop

The latest album by percussionist and bandleader Sarathy Korwar is his most political to date. Korwar describes it as ‘an honest reflection of my experience of being an Indian in Britain. It is a record born of confrontation; one for our confrontational times.’ It features an array of voices from across the South Indian diaspora as well as collaborations with MCs from the nascent rap scene coming out of Mumbai and New Delhi. For Korwar what is refreshing about this scene is that it is the first time independent music has been driven predominantly by working class kids in the country, rather than from the upper-middle class. WED 13:00 Composer of the Week (b088jhbr)
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799)

The Darling of Parisian Society

Presented by Donald Macleod.

On leaving school, and because of his father's position, Joseph took up a commission in the prestigious Company of Musketeers, part of Louis XV's royal household. With his dashing good looks and personality, he became a hit. However he did encounter prejudice amongst some of his comrades, and was eventually forced to resign. Around this time his music was becoming popular in fashionable salons.

By 1766 Saint-Georges started having composition lessons with Joseph Gossec. Gossec dedicated his Opus 9 set of Trio Sonatas to his fashionable student. Saint-Georges soon found himself performing under Gossec's direction in the Concert des Amateurs, which became the platform for premiering many of the younger composer's works, such as the Violin Concerto in G major, published in 1772.

Linton Kwesi Johnson

"My generation, which was the rebel generation of black youth, has changed England and in changing England we've changed ourselves." Philip Dodd talks to him about the roots of his poetry, his love of music and the way he thinks Britain and black Britons have changed since 1963 when he arrived in London from Jamaica as an eleven-year-old boy.

DIY radio and imaginary folk

Elsewhere we play gamelan for flute and percussion, new music from Anna Meredith and imaginary folk from Slovenia.

In 1787 Saint-Georges visited London where a duel was arranged between him and his fellow countryman Chevalier D'Eon. D'Eon had been a spy for the French court, and was famed not only for his fencing but also for his cross-dressing.

On returning to France Saint-Georges introduced Parisian society to the latest English fashions of frock coat, round hat and boots. He was something of a trendsetter and crowds would follow him in the streets. By 1789 he visited London for a second time and organised at least one benefit concert.

As he enters a woodland, perfumer, Roja Dove can be overwhelmed. This legendary nose of the perfume industry can identify 800 different scents blindfolded. Place him in a forest and he can sense narratives of sex, birth, decay and death.

Roja joins Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough for a walk in the woods to discuss how the base notes of the forest scent inspire him. The foundation of damp moss and rotting wood is warm and comforting, but a change in the breeze can bring fresh inspiration to excite the senses, just the kind of effect Roja looks for when he formulates a new perfume.

Over the course of a day at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios, they crafted several dynamic pieces with Oliver on cello and samples, Laurie on synth and lampshade, and Adam Bohman taking his bow to a huge variety of everyday objects from broken CDs to old loyalty cards, combs and metal rulers, not to mention a selection of text pieces based on Chinese takeaway menus.

Plus, Max plays music from Nairobi for the short of breath; we have a vocal hot potato written by Erin Gee for the TAK Ensemble, and an imaginary soundtrack inspired by the strange connection between the six Hawksmoor churches of London.

Produced by Alannah Chance.

FRI 13:00 Composer of the Week (b088jhc1)
Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799)

Suspicion and Imprisonment

When the French Revolution took hold, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was all for it. He longed for a change in French society and for those born into slavery. By 1792 he approached the National Assembly to ask to be allowed to form his own black regiment to support the revolution. This was the first of its kind in Europe, and was called the Légion Saint-Georges. Through all this turmoil he went on giving concerts including performances with the horn player Lamothe. The Violin Concerto in A major has many passages specifically for the horn.

Even as Colonel of the Legion, Saint-Georges was not above suspicion. Having had many aristocratic friends he found himself dismissed and eventually sent to prison for a year. When he was released, he decided to return to San Domingo seeking a better life on his father's plantation. Unfortunately revolution had reached there as well. He returned to France and in 1799 died in Paris a broken and forgotten man. His once-famous music was later banned from performance in France by Napoleon.

Sir Mark Elder (conductor)

Sir Mark Elder and the Halle continue our series marking 150 years since the death of Hector Berlioz with the composer’s vividly dramatic oratorio The Childhood of Christ.

Simple and often disarmingly direct, with emotions that unfold in some of the composer’s most beautiful melodies (including the much-loved ‘Shepherds’ Farewell’), the oratorio follows the Holy Family as they flee from Bethlehem into Egypt, where they find safety and welcome.

Proms Plus: Inspired by Berlioz’s trickery, Shahidha Bari and Nick Groom explore the long tradition of literary hoaxes, with readings from some of the most creative and audacious examples. Producer Ciaran Bermingham.

Followed by a selection of recordings from this week's Proms Artists.

FRI 16:30 The Listening Service (b0b9w8bc)
Orchestral Manoeuvres

As the world's greatest celebration of orchestras and orchestral music that is the BBC Proms gets underway, Tom Service attempts to shed some light on three centuries of orchestral manoeuvres... When did orchestras begin and why? Why do they have standardised sections of strings, woodwind, brass and percussion? Why did they seem to get bigger and bigger as the 19th century turned into the 20th? Why have so many of the great composers spent so much of their time writing for them? Are they still relevant to today's composers and what's their future?

And to find out what it's actually like to play in an orchestra, an individual working together with sometimes 100 others, Tom talks to Beverley Jones, double bassist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

David Papp (producer).

FRI 22:15 Free Thinking (m0004my0)
Landmark: Audre Lorde

Poet Jackie Kay and performer Selina Thompson plus Jonathan Rollins and Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins - the children of Audre Lorde - discuss the influence of the US writer and civil rights activist whose work considers feminism, lesbianism, civil rights and black female identity. Shahidha Bari presents.

In her famous essay The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House (1980), Lorde wrote:

"Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference – those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older – know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house."

Lorde's writing includes poetry collections such as The First Cities (1968), Cables to Rage (1970) and The Black Unicorn (1978). Her Essays include Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (1984) and Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Redefining Difference. She also wrote Zami: A New Spelling of My Name (1982) her novel chronicling her own childhood and sexuality.

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches and The Black Unicorn are being reprinted in the UK this July.
