SAT 11:45 New Generation Artists (m0006zjs)
New Generation Artists in Purcell and Haydn

New Generation Artists.
Kate Molleson presents the first programme in this summer's series celebrating the prodigious talents of Radio 3's current New Generation Artists. Today, in advance of their appearances at this year's BBC Proms, there's sublime Purcell from the Scots mezzo Catriona Morison, a scintillating Haydn sonata from the brilliant Georgian pianist Mariam Batsashvili and the magical 'Sunrise' Quartet in a performance given at the Ryedale Festival by the Aris Quartet.

Mariam Batsashvili (piano)

Clara Schumann Ich stand in dunkeln Träumen and Liebeszauber from 6 Lieder, Op 13

Brahms Dort in den Weiden steht ein Haus
Catriona Morison (mezzo soprano), Simon Lepper (piano)

Established two decades ago, Radio 3's New Generation Artist scheme is internationally acknowledged as the foremost scheme of its kind. It offers a platform for artists at the beginning of their international careers. Each year six musicians join the scheme for two years, during which time they appear at the UK's major music festivals, enjoy dates with the BBC orchestras and have the opportunity to record in the BBC studios. The artists are also encouraged to form artistic partnerships with one another and to explore a wide range of repertoire, not least the work of contemporary and women composers. In recent years, Radio 3's New Generation Artists have appeared in festivals or concerts in Aldeburgh, Bath, Belfast, Birmingham, Buxton, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hay-on-Wye, Orkney, Ryedale, Southampton and Stratford-upon-Avon as well as at the BBC Proms. Typically, the artists selected will have been prizewinners at major international competitions such as the Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Ferrier or Cardiff Singer of the World. However, the BBC New Generation Artist scheme is not itself a prize, rather it offers a unique two year platform on which artists can develop their prodigious talents. Not surprisingly, the list of alumni reads like a Who's Who of the most exciting musicians of the past two decades. In this series, we can catch those artists near the beginnings of their journeys.

SAT 12:30 This Classical Life (m0004s3y)
Jess Gillam with... Segun Akinola

Jess Gillam presents her new show, with the TV and film composer Segun Akinola, whose credits include the latest series of BBC One's Doctor Who. Their choices include music from The Planets by Holst and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, Ravel's String Quartet, and tracks by Snarky Puppy and Spiritualized.

From musical beginnings in a carnival band, to being the first-ever saxophone finalist in BBC Young Musician, and appearances at the Last Night of the Proms in 2018 and at this year’s BAFTA awards, Jess is one of today’s most engaging and charismatic classical performers. Each week on This Classical Life, she is joined by another young musician to swap tracks and share musical discoveries across a wide range of styles, revealing how music shapes their everyday lives.

This Classical Life is also available as a podcast on BBC Sounds.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (m0006zjv)
Liquid sounds (and a marvellous party) with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo takes us on a wild musical ride. There’s passion and adventure from J.S Bach and one of his sons C.P.E Bach; harmonic twists and turns from Handel and Philip Glass; Puccini sung by Della Reese and absorbing soundworlds from Kaija Saariaho and Gregory Spears.

At 2pm Anthony lines up his highly unusual Must Listen piece. It’s a chance to step into the rehearsal room and eavesdrop on one of the twentieth century's greatest operatic stars as she conducts a masterclass in New York in the early 1970s. It’s also a chance to hear part of the aria “Cortigiani Vil Razza" from Verdi’s opera Rigoletto, sung by a soprano.

A series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3

SAT 15:00 Sound of Cinema (m0006zjx)
'You've Never Had It So Good'

A look back on cinematic depictions of 1950's Britain through film music with Matthew Sweet, marking the release this week of 'Tell It To The Bees' - Annabel Jankel's drama set in 1950's Scotland, with music by Claire M Singer.

How should we regard Britain in the 1950's? Matthew Sweet profiles the decade through some of the film music of the time and takes a "rear view mirror" look, courtesy of some more recent films set in the period, which saw the nation transition from post-war austerity into the Swinging Sixties.

Music featured in the programme is taken from the films 'The Happiest Days of Your Life'; 'Doctor In the House'; 'A Kid For Two Farthings'; 'Night And The City'; 'Room At The Top'; 'Night Of The Demon'; 'The Colditz Story'; 'Queen And Country'; 'Wish You Were Here'; 'The Long Day Closes'; and 'Phantom Thread'. The programme also features music from this week's featured new release 'Tell It To the Bees'.

Andreas Staier: A new touch

Andreas Staier gives a recital of 18th century keyboard music on the fortepiano as part of this year's York Early Music Festival.

The emergence of the piano in the second half of the 18th century brought keyboard music not just a new range of expressive possibilities, but also coincided with the arrival of new ‘classical’ forms such as the sonata and rejuvenated, emotionally recharged versions of the fantasia and the theme and variations. Andreas Staier’s recital explores this crucial and exciting era in the evolution of the piano repertoire in works by some of the most influential keyboard composers of the day.

Presented by Lucie Skeaping.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (b08f4px8)
In space no-one can hear you sing...

Space. A place few men or women have gone before ... but plenty of composers have. The universe has inspired musicians for hundreds of years and consequently we all know what space music sounds like. Or do we?

From Holst and David Bowie to John Williams via Ligeti, Thomas Ades and the Beastie Boys, Tom Service dons his spacesuit on a mission to explore why cosmic-inspired music sounds the way it does, and discovers how space science is just as inspired by music as musicians are by space.

En route to the stars, space scientist Lucie Green is on hand to tell Tom the reality of sound in space, while mathematician Elaine Chew helps him uncover the music of the spheres.

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (m0006zrt)
Fly me to the Moon

Fifty years ago, on July 20th 1969, humans landed on the moon for the very first time. Or was it in fact the first time?

Some say that adventurers and inventors have been making the trip to the moon for centuries. Just ask Edgar Allen Poe, who documented Hans Phall’s journey by hot air balloon. Or listen to Leoš Janáček, with his opera celebrating Mr Brouček, who made it all the way on a drunken dream. Or read Italo Calvino, whose classic character Qfwfq climbs up there to harvest lunar milk.

In this edition of Words And Music you too can experience the sensation of ascending to the moon and taking a moonwalk, beholding all the wonders lying in wait on the dark side. Your companions for the expedition are today’s readers: Zawe Ashton and Peter Marinker.

Readings:
Orlando Furioso - Ludovico Ariosto
Stoned Moon Drawing - Robert Rauschenberg

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Kirill Karabits (conductor)

A concert of 20th-century classics from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra continues a weekend marking the 50th anniversary of the first manned mission to land on the Moon.

Space travel has never been more richly imagined than in Holst’s suite The Planets, but in order to get there you’ll need to take a Short Ride in a Fast Machine, courtesy of John Adams’s exhilarating, propulsive Minimalist masterpiece.

The lyrical beauty of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, with its exquisite slow movement, offers a contrasting moment of contemplation. Dynamic Franco-Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović makes his Proms debut as soloist.

The Italian Job: Music from the Polish Court

Il Tempo Baroque Ensemble are joined by sopranos Olga Pasiecznik), Ewelina Siedlecka and Katarzyna Bienias, along with Piotr Olech (contralto), Aleksander Rewiński (tenor) and Piotr Pieron (bass) in a concert given at the Royal Castle in Warsaw as part of the International Summer Academy of Early Music 2018.

SUN 23:00 Percussion Century (m00022p9)
Going solo

Crash, bang, wallop?

No! Colin Currie suggests you think again as he embarks on a journey of sonic exploration. In this episode, percussion is truly set free as Colin chooses some of the most innovative, exquisite and powerful music written for percussion over the past century.

When thirteen percussionists lined up on stage in New York in 1933 to play Ionisation by Edgar Varèse, solo percussion music was firmly planted on the musical map. Composers and performers suddenly became aware of the huge expressive potential of a family of instruments that had previously been used primarily for rhythmic accompaniment and occasional sound effects.

In the decades that followed many more composers started writing for percussion ensembles and soloists, allowing musicians like Colin to thrive. He’ll be introducing a piece played on tuned metal pipes, music for huge multi-percussion set-ups, and the sound of one of the most beautiful and versatile of all percussion instruments, the marimba. Plus an entertaining solo from the jazz master Buddy Rich.

"As my literary sensibility becomes more patriotic, more conservatism, more religious, more sentimental, more fraternal, I find an era to write about where I can look back and live it and so This Storm is very much about alliance and friendship and belief and ideology in the early days of World War II and my good guys - who are always the cops ... and these folks are always going to one of two places, to carouse, to booze, to plot, to talk of sandbagging unfriendly politicians and to flirt and conduct their adulterous love affairs."

The Summer Forest

Once upon a time, Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough woke up in the summer forest. At first, there were worse places to be lost. She hid inside giant oaks with historians, read Tolkein and Shakespeare with wise women. A kind witch, Moira Hodgkinson, even cast a spell to wish her good luck in her quest to discover the joys and traditions of the summer forest.

But it wasn't all about the mythical Forest of Arden and the English Romantic idyll. Eleanor watched as that got chewed up, trees turned into ships, into fuel for the furnaces of the Industrial Revolution. So she met legendary fairy tale guru Jack Zipes, and heard his tales from the Black Forest in Germany, travelled back in time to Earth's primeval forests with their strange and leafless trees; and still found time to relax with a spot of Japanese forest bathing. Listen to the summer forest in all its cultural and ecological glory.

Despite our evolution in the African rainforests, Eleanor wonders whether it is tales from the frozen North that have given us the most potent forests of the imagination, invading our psyche, inhabiting our stories, inspiring our architecture,

Legendary fairytale guru Jack Zipes introduces us to the darker side of the Black Forest, the central point of European folklore. Eleanor travels to Shakespeare's Forest of Arden, part real, part imagined - a forest full of magic and mystery, where we can become better versions of ourselves. We hear tales from the vast frozen Taiga forest, encircling the world in the North. And in the African rainforest we meet early hominids as they flit in and out of the trees, watching the forest biology shaping what we are and the stories we tell.

On the way we see the strange reality of the forest itself communicating. And as darkness falls, our imagination takes over as we spend a moonlit night in the New Forest, high in an oak tree, in the company of ravens, owls and deer.

WED 23:00 Late Junction (m000709v)
The cursed radio music of life

Max Reinhardt hosts another programme jam-packed with challenging, mind-bending, story-spinning music.

Decolonise the mind through the work of experimental vocalist-composer Amirtha Kidambi. Enjoy the pure psychedelic magic of rock band Wand. Endure some verbal battery from spoken word performer Christopher Brett Bailey. Voyage into space with doowop bandleader Dubi Dolczek. Explore the moon with 'Droid Jazz' group Planet Battagon. And, finally, come down to earth again via the exquisite sound of pianist Christophe Chassol, whose recent pieces have been directly inspired by novelist Hermann Hesse.

It was Hermann Hesse who famously wrote this paragraph, which we think accidentally sums up Late Junction as a show rather well: “It is time to come to your senses … You are to listen to the cursed radio music of life and to reverence the spirit behind it and to laugh at its distortions. So there you are. More will not be asked of you.”

Earthy, pagan dances meet the Music of the Spheres in this concert of 20th- and 21st-century orchestral works. Stravinsky’s infamous ballet score The Rite of Spring pulses with rhythmic energy and urgency, while Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s luminous and intricately textured Metacosmos travels deep into space. At the centre of the programme is Britten’s elegiac Violin Concerto, written on the cusp of the Second World War. The Pine Tree

Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough tells the magical story of the tree that sits at the heart of Christmas Day - the pine. We’ll head out through starry skies to the vast pine forests of the world, where Eleanor discovers a tale of economic power, political intrigue, and biological wonder. As we’re watched over by the world’s oldest tree - the Bristlecone pine - thousands of years pass. Whole cultures appear from the pine forests as the tree journeys to the tropics, the Middle East, and encircles the world in the north. Ships' masts, log cabins, violins, baubles and scented air fresheners arrive and depart. Nations are built from the wood, wars are fought over it, gifts bestowed. As Eleanor warms her hands on the wildfires of the Cretaceous period the modern pine emerges from its flames, and she wonders why we still invite this tree into our homes and worship it above all others. An extraordinary story of global dominance, cultural influence, and kitsch.

Woodstock, the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon, the ongoing Vietnam War, The Beatles’ final album (Abbey Road) – 1969 was a pivotal year.

This Prom explores the film and popular music of 1969 to revive the soundtrack of a special summer.

The BBC Concert Orchestra under Stephen Bell presents a typically wide-angled view, taking in music inspired by the era-defining Woodstock festival, excerpts from the films Battle of Britain, The Italian Job, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Midnight Cowboy, and ‘Here Comes the Sun’ from The Beatles’ final album Abbey Road.

As the USA’s victory in the space race inspired new music to match the emerging digital era, the Moog synthesizer broke into the mainstream with the album Switched-on Bach. A concert evoking the end of the Swinging Sixties, with a cross-generational appeal that offers both a sunburst of nostalgia and iconic revivals.
