9.30am – Building a Library: William Mival picks a personal favourite from among the recordings of Richard Strauss's Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche (Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks).

In an exhilarating tour de force of orchestral writing and musical form, Strauss's 1895 symphonic poem depicts the exploits of the 14th century Till Eulenspiegel. Rascally, foolish and mischievous, courageous and scornful, Till rampages through medieval German society, leaving destruction and outrage in his wake as he confronts and exposes pomposity and hypocrisy. By identifying himself through musical brilliance as an anarchic devil-may-care hero, Strauss was at least in part giving the finger to the musical establishment after the critical dubbing of his recently premiered first opera Guntram. Late in life, Strauss said of Till 'I just wanted to give the people in the concert hall a good laugh for once.' Or was that, too, just another prank...?

SAT 12:15 Music Matters (m0001m33)
A (music) lover's guide, and Venus unwrapped

Tom Service reviews The Classical Music Lover's Companion to Orchestral Music by Robert Philip, with the conductor Jessica Cottis and writer Kate Romano.

Music historian Laurie Stras and composer-performers Kerry Andrew, Laura Jurd and Anna Meredith debate the issues which a 2019 series at Kings Place, 'Venus Unwrapped', is attempting to address as it "throws a spotlight on the creative fire power of female composers".

Also this week, Music Matters follows the money in the high-value market for stringed instruments: Tom talks to players, dealers and institutions.

And Hidden Voices: the forgotten songs and Christmas music of Charles Dibdin.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (b0b86rdn)
Choral conductor Sofi Jeannin

A series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside. Today conductor Sofi Jeannin talks about the sense of longing she hears in Elgar's first symphony, is seduced by the velvet fingers of violinist Josef Hassid, and reveals her admiration for percussionists by choosing a virtuosic piece by Xenakis. Sofi also ensures a Swedish flavour to her choices, playing music by composers from her homeland including Wilhelm Stenhammar, Anders Hillborg and Elfrida Andree.

For her Must Listen piece at 2 o'clock, Sofi plays a brand new recording she has made with the BBC Singers featuring music by a French composer who was once described as "half monk, half rascal".

SAT 21:30 Between the Ears (m0001m3d)
The In-Between Land

The magical North Pennines landscape of deaf shepherd-poet Josephine Dickinson, which inspires her life and work and is the fertile backdrop to her real and imagined sound world. Welcome to her remote hill farm near Alston – near the highest market town in England – where Josephine looks after her sheep and writes her poetry. It’s her in-between land, a place between hearing and deafness, art and reality, home and you listening to the programme. It’s a challenging environment, too: in 2018 the ‘Beast from the East’ cut the local community off and emergency aid had to be airlifted in by Chinook helicopter, but in the spring the wildflower meadows are alive to the sound of curlews, lambs and bumble bees. This peat landscape is ever-present in her life and increasingly a source of inspiration for her environmentalism. Born in London, Josephine moved here in 1994 and fell in love with the moors - and with Douglas, an elderly sheep farmer who took her under his wing and married her. Josephine’s deafness started at the age of six, but hearing aids enabled her to pursue her love of music, and she taught piano and worked as an arts development worker at the South Bank. But seven years ago she lost her hearing completely, plunging her into a hallucinatory inner soundscape that tormented and fascinated her in equal measure. She can now hear her lambs and the wind in the cotton grass, thanks to a cochlear implant. In collaboration with BBC Radio 3 and sonic artist Andrew Deakin - from Full of Noises, based in Barrow - Josephine invited local people to share her Ark of Sound in Alston Parish Church, a powerful sound installation demonstrating that a deaf person doesn’t live in a silent world.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (m0001m2b)
Daniel Evans

Actor and theatre director Daniel Evans shares with Michael Berkeley his passions for musical theatre, opera and the piano.

Daniel Evans grew up in the Rhondda Valley and won praise and prizes at Eisteddfods as a teenager. Since then his career has been something of a high-wire act: balancing performing versus directing and theatre management, stage versus screen, popular musicals versus edgy new dramas.

He first made his name twenty years ago as an actor, in Peter Pan at the National Theatre and then as an outstanding interpreter of Sondheim, twice winning Oliviers for Best Actor in a Musical. He’s also well known for his roles in television and film, from Spooks and Dr Who to Great Expectations.

And then in 2009 Daniel Evans was appointed Artistic Director of Sheffield Theatres and he’s now at Chichester Festival Theatre. His stage production of The Full Monty went into the West End and continues to be on tour nationwide, and Flowers for Mrs Harris - a new musical about the life of a post-war char lady being transformed by the sight of a Christian Dior dress – won three UK Theatre Awards.

Daniel tells Michael about meeting Sondheim whilst performing in New York, about his passion for singing, and about the importance of the tradition of the actor-manager in British theatre.

He chooses music by Sondheim and Bernstein that reflects his passion for musical theatre, and he shares his love of opera with music by Britten and Donizetti.

And we hear Bryn Terfel sing a Welsh folk song which takes Daniel back to the valleys and Eisteddfods of his childhood.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (m0001n88)
Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)

The Sea

Donald Macleod delves into the life and work of one of the most important Russian composers of his age – Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky-Korsakov’s music is filled with lush orchestration and hints of orientalism and folk music. These elements and his role as a leading member of “The Mighty Handful” of composers who sought to forge a truly nationalistic music has led him to be regarded as the main architect of the Russian style of composition we know today. In Monday’s episode, Donald explores Rimsky-Korsakov's relationship with the sea, which began as a childhood obsession, before an early naval career, and a civilian job as Inspector of Russia’s Naval Bands brought him into closer proximity to the ocean. Donald also ponders what the ocean represented for Rimsky and for his largely landlocked Russian audience, alongside the various evocations of the sea in his music.

Serenades were a popular form of outdoor evening entertainment in late 18th-century Austria, and though the exact occasion for the writing of this piece (lavishly scored for 13 players - 12 winds plus double bass) is unknown, its posthumous title refers to its unusually grand scale and seriousness.

Introduced by Sean Rafferty.

MON 22:45 The Essay (m0001n8t)
Weird England

Tar Bar'l

In this series of Essays, we usher you into a secret world of hidden folklore. Five young writers explore the odder, darker corners of English tradition: this is not an England of bluetits, roses and white cliffs, nor of country lanes and thatched cottages, but an invitation into a compendium of bizarre and sometimes creepy rural rituals.

Each writer lives or has lived in the area. Their impression of the event stirs childhood memories, fires new convictions, deepens an understanding of ritual and reveals the awkward transposition of ancient ceremonies in contemporary life. In the final essay, the Japanese poet Lila Matsumoto takes her visiting parents to a Staffordshire horn dance.

This series attempts to hear younger witnesses writing for the times in which we live: dispatches on Englishness from the weird frontline.

1. Tar Bar’l

On New Year’s Eve in Allendale, Northumberland a group of men heave barrels of burning tar, kindling and paraffin onto their heads and process through the town. This is a programme devoted to the appeal of fire and flame. This is the Tar Barl Festival, Allendale’s way of marking the New Year for over 160 years. Groups of ‘guisers’ dress in costumes (‘guises’) and carry the fiery barrels on their heads. Novelist Naomi Booth presents. Naomi lives in Yorkshire, but remembers the icy cold of childhood Northumberland holidays. She finds herself strangely drawn to the fiery energy at the heart of Allendale’s New Year’s Eve festivities.

Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)

The Fantastic World of Nikolai Andreyevich

Donald Macleod delves into the life and work of one of the most important Russian composers of his age – Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky-Korsakov’s music is filled with lush orchestration and hints of orientalism and folk music. These elements and his role as a leading member of “The Mighty Handful” of composers who sought to forge a truly nationalistic music has led him to be regarded as the main architect of the Russian style of composition we know today. In Tuesday’s episode, Donald explores Rimsky Korsakov’s use of fairy-tales and folklore, the idea of ‘otherness’ and the excitement of the exotic in his music – elements which seem to contrast with reports of the man himself.

Folk Roots, Urban Roots

'Sometimes,' says Simon Rattle, describing the thinking behind his Roots and Origins series, 'it’s a good thing to have a connecting line and it can be a wonderful opportunity to explore all kinds of things that you might not usually explore and put things together than you might not necessarily think they might be happy bed mates.' So, hold on tight for an exhilarating journey from Hungary to the US, via Poland and Argentina.

The first half features what Rattle calls 'hearty folk music': Bartok's Hungarian Peasant Songs and a rare chance to hear Szymanowski's Polish folktale-inspired Harnasie, for tenor and chorus. The second half begins and ends with LSO principal clarinet, Chris Richards, making his way to the front of the stage for two of the great jazz-inspired clarinet concertos of the twentieth century. And in between, expect Latin rhythms and percussion from Argentine Osvaldo Golijov's 2009 Nazareno, based on music from his St Mark's Passion and written for tonight's performers Katia and Marielle Labèque.

Rattle sums it all up like this: 'Somehow these pieces together added to this wild middle east European first half should make a fantastic evening.'

Recorded last week at the Barbican Hall and presented by Martin Handley.

Béla Bartók: Hungarian Peasant Songs
Karol Szymanowski: Harnasie
Interval
Stravinsky: Ebony Concerto
Osvaldo Golijov (arr Gonzalo Grau): Nazareno for two pianos and orchestra

Weird England

Weird England: Hunting the Earl

2. Hunting the Earl

Poet Elizabeth-Jane Burnett takes part in the ritual of the Hunting of the Earl of Rone in Combe Martin, Devon, and investigates its history. The tradition commemorates the shipwreck of the Earl of Tyrone in 1607, captured by grenadiers and executed for sedition. Elizabeth-Jane is originally from Devon. In this essay, she weaves memories of life and loss, childhood and belonging into a poignant reflection on ritual and place.

The Late Junction Albums of the Year

It's that time of the year again when we ask the Late Junction presenters and production team to flick through the releases of 2018 and scroll back through their music libraries to pick their favourite album of the year.

It’s been a year marked by some strong electronic albums, often gritty and uncompromising. But as ever Late Junction goes beyond the trends in the music press, digging deep to find the rough diamonds across a vast range of genres. Expect heart melting avant-folk guitars, conceptual latex-pop, woozy post-R&B and prepared piano that sounds ‘like someone performing open-heart surgery on a grandfather clock’. But will your album of the year make the list?

It was the only time that Mozart wrote for the harp, but the concerto is a cornerstone of the repertoire for both instruments. To conclude, Xian Zhang conducts Dvorak's joyful Symphony No 8, full of gorgeous melodies and written to mark the composers election into the Bohemian Academy of Science, Literature and Arts. So to redress the balance we’ve saved over some of our other favourite releases from 2018, including some rare creole music from Guadeloupe, a modern take on musique concrète and some otherworldly Gaelic psalm singing to help us get in the Christmas spirit.

In Thursday’s programme, Donald explores this claim, and the intriguing links between folk music and religion in the life and music of the man who Stravinsky famously said was "closed to any religious or metaphysical idea".

The beautiful but low-born Falsirena tries ingenious ways of seducing Duke Ostrogoto, despite his engagement to a noblewoman: she poses successively as an unemployed opera singer, a French baroness and a German soap-seller against the background of the dazzling Venetian carnival

As Christmas approaches, and as part of festivities marking the reopening of the Aberdeen Music Hall after major refurbishment, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Alpesh Chauhan take to the newly polished stage to perform some of classical music's greatest hits.

The sleigh-bells of Troika are often heard in Christmas concerts - conjuring a snowy landscape. Here they are part of Prokofiev's Suite from his Lieutenant Kijé film music. If the composer was consciously courting popularity with an accessible style, this music nevertheless maintains a distinct tartness, for all its tunefulness.

Grieg's Piano Concerto is perhaps the most famous of all: parodied into eternal fame in the 1971 Morcambe and Wise Christmas Special. Freddy Kempf is the soloist in the work which remains popular because of its rhythmic invention and melodic abundance: many tunes echoing Dano-Norwegian folk music.

And is there a hint of Nordic winter chill in Sibelius' Second Symphony? Probably not, because it was written during an Italian springtime. It could be seen as an emotional journey, or an abstract symphonic one. Either way the finale is suitably festive for this evening's sense of occasion.

THU 22:00 Free Thinking (m0001nsz)
Landmark: Watership Down

An ecological fable about a perfect society which terrified children when it was first animated. Matthew Sweet reads Richard Adams' classic as a new version arrives on UK TV screens. He's joined by Dr Diana Bell, conservation biologist at UEA; Victoria Dickenson, author of Rabbit, a cultural history of rabbits; Brian Sibley, adaptor of the novel for a radio version and New Generation Thinker Lisa Mullen to debate rabbits both real and fictional.

First published in 1972, Adams' novel follows rabbits escaping the destruction of their warren. Adams said that he told the tale to his daughters on car journeys and he rejected comparisons with the Bible tale of Moses and other religious symbolism. What do portrayals of rabbits in literature and film, from Peter Rabbit to Bugs Bunny, tell us about our own society? Matthew Sweet remembers being scared by the first animated film released in 1978. Now a new one from BBC TV and Netflix features the voices of James McAvoy, John Boyega and Gemma Arterton.

THU 22:45 The Essay (m0001nt3)
Weird England

Snatch Valentine

Snatch Valentine

Valentine’s Day in Norfolk and other parts of Eastern England was a children’s festival, where Jack Valentine would appear on the night before, mysteriously leaving a gift for the younger members of the house. But the unluckiest Norfolk children were faced with the ordeal of Snatch Valentine, where the gift was suddenly taken away from them. Writer Laura Joyce follows Jack Valentine down the streets of Norwich. Laura lived in Norwich for many years, and her essay is both a celebration of and a valedictory note to the city. In an elegiac piece, she reflects on the pleasures and the pains of gift-giving.

THU 23:00 Late Junction (m0001nt7)
Puce Mary’s Late Junction mixtape

Danish noise artist Frederikke Hoffmeier, aka Puce Mary, hand picks 30 minutes of music from her record collection for the latest edition of the Late Junction mixtape.

Hoffmeier has said she is drawn to music that expresses the extremes of human experience and her work is often both uncompromising and violent, using ear-splitting frequencies and harsh visual imagery. Her last album The Drought, which was her sixth, is rooted in industrial music and power electronics but goes beyond both, offering shuddering violence and personal vulnerability. For this mix she selects some surprising pieces from the music that has influenced her career so far.

Elsewhere we have new music from Sarathy Korwar which interrogates the idea of ‘Eastern’ music and we salute the season with a twinkly Christmas single by Sufjan Stevens.

Produced by Alannah Chance for Reduced Listening.

Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)

A Revised Legacy

Donald Macleod delves into the life and work of one of the most important Russian composers of his age – Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Rimsky-Korsakov’s music is filled with lush orchestration and hints of orientalism and folk music. These elements and his role as a leading member of “The Mighty Handful” of composers who sought to forge a truly nationalistic music has led him to be regarded as the main architect of the Russian style of composition we know today. In the final programme of the week, Donald explores Rimsky-Korsakov’s legacy, and to what degree the composer was a conscious architect of his own music’s reputation via the countless revisions he made of his works. Donald also examines the impact which Rimsky-Korsakov had on the reception of other Russian composers’ music overseas.

Attahir’s piece takes inspiration from the Muslim afternoon prayer; the heat, light and atmosphere of that moment.
