Building a Library: Handel's Concerti a due cori with Simon Heighes.

For Handel a concerto was a means to an end, a tempting bonbon to entice an audience to the main event of the evening. His three Concerti a due cori (Concertos for two choirs) were specially written to help sell seats to his 1747 and 1748 Covent Garden oratorio seasons, Handel recycling highlights from his older choral works and operas, stirringly re-scored for two orchestras with prominent wind and horn parts. Thus these concertos are an attractive proposition, packed full of Handel's 'greatest hits', one after another, whose qualities come over especially well in period instrument performances.

SAT 12:15 Music Matters (b0b39sh1)
Lancashire dialect in song

Kate is in Manchester this week to explore Lancashire dialect in song with performer and researcher Jennifer Reid, the latest in a continuing series of features on Music Matters about the connections between language and music around the British Isles. Also, Rambert's new production, Life Is a Dream, the first ballet in the UK set to music by Witold Lutosławski, and an excerpt from Matthew Herbert's new album, which is actually a book, The Music: A Novel in Sound.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (b0b39sh3)
Inside Music with Rachel Portman

A new series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside. Today composer Rachel Portman revels in Ravel's use of pizzicato, enjoys the intimacy of lieder by Clara Schumann and shows how a simple rising scale can be the catalyst for mesmeric and powerful music by Philip Glass. Rachel also introduces music from her opera The Little Prince - written specifically with a younger audience in mind - "I wanted to write an opera that I could take my own children to".

At 2 o'clock Rachel plays her Must Listen piece - in fact a pair of pieces - from a collection of music she finds herself returning to again and again and in which Rachel finds a deep humanity.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3.

SAT 15:00 Sound of Cinema (b0b39sh5)

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (b0b39shc)
Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is one of the twentieth century's masterpieces, acclaimed at its premiere in 1934 but then banned two years later by Stalin. It tells a tragic tale of adultery and murder as the bored and lonely heroine Katerina, sung by soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek, falls in love with one of her husband's workers, the manipulative Sergey, tenor Brandon Jovanovich. Their treachery leads to a gruesome series of murders - and ultimately to her own devastating end.
Eva-Maria Westbroek leads a starry cast, joined by Brandon Jovanovich and Sir John Tomlinson who is celebrating 40 years of singing at Covent Garden.
Jim Naughtie presents and is joined by Russian cultural historian Rosamund Bartlett.

SAT 22:00 Hear and Now (b0b39cfh)
Sounds and Visions with Max Richter

Tom Service introduces music from the opening concert of "Sounds and Visions" - a weekend devised by composer Max Richter and artist Yulia Mahr and recorded earlier this month at the Barbican in London. The concert includes Richter's melancholic multimedia work Infra, alongside performances from Jlin.

Infra takes its title from the Latin for the word 'below', and that's what Richter explores in this meditation on the events surrounding the London 7/7 bombings - the world just beneath the surface. Originally composed for a dance work choreographed by Wayne McGregor, it's an examination of the submerged sounds of the everyday, of the unnoticed, the overlooked and the forgotten. Max Richter is joined by the strings of the 12 Ensemble.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0b49f2f)
Elisabeth Luard

Michael Berkeley talks to the food writer, artist and journalist Elisabeth Luard about her favourite music and the memories it conjures up of the joys and tragedies of family life.

The winner of the Guild of Food Writers Award for Lifetime Achievement, she has written more than twenty cookbooks, including European Peasant Cookery, Flavours of Andalucía, and A Cook's Year in a Welsh Farmhouse. And her compelling series of memoirs documents the joys and appalling tragedy she's experienced as a mother; the delight she found in living abroad with her young children; and the ups and downs of her long marriage. The latest is Squirrel Pie: Adventures in Food Across the Globe.

Elisabeth tells Michael about her childhood growing up in embassies in South America and her return to school in England and a very special choir master. She chooses flamenco music that reminds her of her life in rural pre-tourism Andalucia bringing up her four young children.

We hear Elisabeth's friend Christopher Logue reading from his poem War Music, and music by Mozart and Beethoven - and we hear a song which was special to Elisabeth's daughter Francesca, who died in her twenties.

Producer: Jane Greenwood

What's the secret musical ingredient that music from salsa to Saturday Night Fever, from Charlie Parker to George Gershwin, from Johann Sebastian Bach to Leonard Bernstein, from ragtime to funk and disco, not to mention baroque sarabandes, has in common?

The answer is that they all swoon to the sounds of syncopation: to rhythms that dance against, as well as with, the beat - to make us tap our fingers and toes, to get us dancing.

On today's The Listening Service: what are the secrets of syncopation: what defines these rhythms in our music, and in our brains and our bodies, in the physiological and psychological ways that we process them?

Tom Service goes off beat! (And tries his hand at Cuban percussion).

SUN 17:30 Words and Music (b0b3vw9w)
The Wedding

On the day after Prince Harry ties the knot with Meghan Markle, Words and Music leads you up the aisle with a series of poetry, prose and music on the theme of the wedding. From the bridal marches of Wagner and Mendelssohn, to Saint-Saëns' confection of piano and strings in the Wedding Cake Valse-Caprice, the joyful ritual of the wedding ceremony has inspired some timeless music. Anna Maxwell Martin and Jamie Glover read work which explores the enduring romance of wedded bliss and the darker moments of married life. Poetry by Shakespeare and Keats meditates on the nature of love and takes us to a sumptuous Grecian wedding feast; while Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice returns us to a time of marriage as an aid to social mobility. Dickens' Great Expectations introduces us to one of literature's most haunting brides: the jilted Miss Havisham, who resides in her faded wedding dress alongside the clock which stopped at twenty to nine on her wedding day, the moment she discovered her heart had been broken.

David Attenborough - World Music Collector

David Attenborough reveals a side of himself that nobody knows, as a collector of music from all over the world. We hear the stories that surround it, and the music itself.

One of David Attenborough's first projects was 'Alan Lomax - Song Hunter', a television series he produced in 1953-4. The famous collector of the blues and folk music of America gathered traditional musicians from all over Britain and Ireland and, for the first time, they appeared on television. David loved the music, the people and, inspired by Lomax, he became music collector himself.

From the start there was a connection between wildlife and folk culture broadcasting: BBC natural history staff shared an office, and equipment, with colleagues busy recording traditional songs, tunes and stories. Soon after 'Song Hunter' Attenborough began travelling the world for the series 'Zoo Quest'. This time the hunt was for animals, captured live for London Zoo. The series also looked at the culture of local people and if he came across music Attenborough recorded it. In Paraguay he met some amazing harp players and recorded what became the series' signature tune. This started a craze. Remember Los Trios Paraguayos?

Wherever he went to make programmes David Attenborough recorded musicians. When the lads carrying the crew's baggage in New Guinea started singing, he taped them. He recorded songs in Borneo longhouses, drumming in Sierra Leone, gamelan music in Java, Aboriginal didgeridoo players and palace music in Tonga.

Attenborough gave the music to the BBC and it has sat, unheard, in the Sound Library ever since. Now he listens again to recordings he made half a century ago. He reveals the memories and stories they evoke, and his delight in the music.

Producer: Julian May.

Remorse, or, The Sorrows of Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Samuel Taylor Coleridge promised to be the genius of his generation, but his creative achievement was contaminated by chronic procrastination, addiction and hallucination. Robin Brooks's inventive play tells the story of Coleridge's ill-fated friendship with William Wordsworth and his infatuation with Sara Hutchinson.

At the crisis of a major breakdown, and suffering from a massive laudanum overdose, Coleridge is forced to review the train-wreck of his life. In an opium nightmare his crimes rise up to accuse him, and a court of friends and enemies is assembled to review the experiences that have brought him to this pass.

Gershwin, Couperin, Cornysh

Tonight's mixtape is a blend of big orchestral, intimate keyboard and sacred choral music. Starting with the piano beginner's favourite - Beethoven's Für Elise - and a movement of the Schumann string quartet. a sequence of segued orchestral music follows, juxtaposing Stravinsky's visceral Rite of Spring with Gershwin's jazzy Rhapsody in Blue, straight into a Mozart symphonic overture. Then down to the intimate with - arguably - Couperin's most famous keyboard work, an Ave Maria from 15th century composer William Cornysh and ending with Debussy's Pagodes as orchestrated by Percy Grainger.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b07f6nvy)
The Shopping News, Romans buy into an identity - while they can.

Joanna Robertson is a journalist and mother who has lived in five foreign countries, where she has observed that local shopping habits tell you a lot about the place. In these Essays, she argues that when people go shopping, they don't just purchase goods, they also buy into something else. Joanna Robertson takes us shopping with the locals and explores these ulterior motives and what they reveal about the residents of five cities: Rome, New York, Berlin, Tirana and Joanna's current home, Paris.

When Romans shop for traditional foods and delicacies in local family-run businesses, they also buy into a local identity - that's now under threat.

Italy was only unified in the nineteenth century, and local roots and identities often go deeper than national ones. One way that Romans express and nourish this local identity is by shopping in traditional family-run businesses that take pride in their products.
The "forno" bakery on Campo de' Fiori has counted the Borgias and Rossini among its regulars. In the Trastevere area, Romans queue up for the pizzas and black cherry tarts of the Boccioni kosher bakery that dates back to the eighteenth century.
However, many traditional shops are selling up because the children head into professions rather than behind the counter, or because of cash offers from mysterious buyers that the owners can't refuse. Previously legitimate family businesses like bars and restaurants are being taken over by the mafia, who keep the names and decor, but put in their own staff, and use ingredients from mafia controlled farms.
Romans are deeply distressed by how unrecognisable their city has become, and the erosion of identity that this has brought.

Producer: Arlene Gregorius.

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b07f6r79)
The Shopping News, Buying intellectual validation in New York

Joanna Robertson is a journalist and mother who has lived in five foreign countries, where she has observed that local shopping habits tell you a lot about the place. In these Essays, she argues that when people go shopping, they don't just purchase goods, they also buy into something else. Joanna Robertson takes us shopping with the locals and explores these ulterior motives and what they reveal about the residents of five cities: Rome, New York, Berlin, Tirana and Joanna's current home, Paris.

Thus book-shopping in New York is also about intellectual validation - or, as Joanna found when shopping for books with the late Susan Sontag, about building intellectual bridges to Europe.

Producer: Arlene Gregorius.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b07f6r7f)
The Shopping News, Buying toys, and a free childhood, in Berlin.

In this edition, she finds that shopping for toys in Berlin reveals an attitude to childhood and nature that's unique to Germany. Germany's concept of nature is deeply rooted in the concepts of nineteenth-century German Romanticism, which in turn is reflected in German toys, and childhood. The child is the Wanderer, journeying through the boundless realms of creativity and dreams, close to the beauty, teachings and wonders of Nature. It's a childhood of great freedom, and responsibility.

Producer: Arlene Gregorius.

THU 19:30 Radio 3 in Concert (b0b3fqq6)
The Philharmonia plays Mendelssohn and Brahms

Daniele Gatti conducts the Phiharmonia Orchestra in two of the sunniest major key symphonies of the 19th-century, each the result of happy holidays.

Like many a German before and since, Italy's climate, landscape and rich cultural history had an irresistible allure for Mendelssohn. His exuberant 'Iltalian' Symphony, full of southern sunshine and energy, directly reflects the exhilaration and joy of his ten-month tour from Milan to Naples in 1830-31. Brahms's Second Symphony, cheery chalk to the soul-searching First Symphony's cheese, was written on holiday at Pörtschach am Wörthersee in southern Austria. The lakeside resort quickly became a favourite with the Viennese after it got its own railway station on the line from Vienna in 1864. For Brahms. The place evidently released in Brahms a cheerful D major, unbuttoned vibe: his unclouded Second Symphony was written during his 1877 summer holiday there, and the following year he was back again, this time writing his equally relaxed and happy Violin Concerto.

Martin Handley presents, live from the Royal Festival Hall.

Tacita Dean, Mountains, John Tyndall

Tacita Dean has travelled the world pursuing her interest in landscape phenomena, capturing them on film and then editing that material to produce her art. In a new exhibition at London's Royal Academy she presents works new and old on everything from cloudscapes to the cosmos.
Dean who trained as a painter talks to Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough about the importance of courting the unknown and the mercurial qualities of film image, flares, flaws and all.
Then focus on mountains and those who climb them. New Generation Thinker Ben Anderson reflects on an interplay between climbing and photography and how posing led to new understandings of what happens to the human body as it switches between stillness and movement plus the role mountains played in the intellectual development of the 19th century physicist and poet, John Tyndall with Tyndall's biographer, Roland Jackson and literary scholar Gregory Tate.

Tacita Dean Landscape is at the Royal Academy until August 12th. Last chance to see Tacita Dean: Portrait is at the National Portrait Gallery, 15 March-28 May; Still Life is at the National Gallery, 15 March-28 May

THU 22:45 The Essay (b07f6r7h)
The Shopping News, Buying dreams of wealth in Tirana

Joanna Robertson is a journalist and mother who has lived in five foreign countries, where she has observed that local shopping habits tell you a lot about the place. In these Essays, she argues that when people go shopping, they don't just purchase goods, they also buy into something else. Joanna Robertson takes us shopping and explores these ulterior motives and what they reveal about the residents of five cities: Rome, New York, Berlin, Tirana and Joanna's current home, Paris.

In Tirana, after the fall of Communism, people dream of buying luxuries and achieving the kind of wealth they've seen on Italian TV. They buy and sell what they can, and are inventive about ways to make money, particularly in the main square. Someone takes their bathroom scales and charges customers ten lek a go to weigh themselves. Whole families come and see it as a treat. But when virtually the entire nation tries to finance its dreams of wealth through pyramid schemes, the dreams turn into nightmares. In the town of Gramsh, virtually all that remains for sale - are guns.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b07f6r7k)
The Shopping News, The Shopping News: Paris

Joanna Robertson is a journalist and mother who has lived in five foreign countries, where she has observed that local shopping habits tell you a lot about the place. In these Essays, she argues that when people go shopping, they don't just purchase goods, they also buy into something else. Joanna Robertson takes us shopping with the locals and explores these ulterior motives and what they reveal about the residents of five cities: Rome, New York, Berlin, Tirana and Joanna's current home, Paris.

When Parisians shop for, or sell, traditional, locally produced high-quality food, it's not just because they revere it, but also because it's part of a deeply entrenched culture that dates back to the nineteenth century. Owners of specialist food shops like Madame Acabo and her to-die-for chocolates are the heirs of key individuals like the lawyer, politician and gastronome of genius, Brillat-Savarin (whose Physiology of Taste, published in 1825, has never been out of print), and the aristocrat Grimod de la ReyniÃre who wrote not only gastronomic almanacs and journals, but also reviews of the new phenomenon called "le restaurant" - one of which, a very successful one using only locally sourced ingredients, he set up himself.

Producer: Arlene Gregorius.
