Building a Library: Leonard Bernstein's Candide with Edward Seckerson.

Based on Voltaire's 18th-century satirical novel about the misadventures of the pure-hearted and naive Candide and his much more worldly mate Cunégonde, Leonard Bernstein's 1956 operetta isn't just another Broadway show. It opened during the infamous witch hunts of Senator McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee, which Bernstein and and book author Lillian Hellman had experienced firsthand. So alongside the blend of wit, sophistication and comedy, including brilliant parodies of operatic forms like 'Glitter and be Gay', the references to the Spanish Inquisition - 'What a day, what a day for an auto-da-fe' - and the irony of Candide's mantra that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds give the work a dark undercurrent.

That Candide never had the lasting success he thought it deserved really bugged Bernstein who tinkered with it on-and-off until the end of his life, resulting in multiple versions and the question of which, if any, is definitive.

SAT 13:00 Inside Music (b09zmqgz)
Inside Music with Nicholas Collon

A new series in which each week a musician reveals a selection of music - from the inside. Today conductor Nicholas Collon discovers how when Joseph Haydn breaks the rules he produces his most endearing music, and describes just how Maurice Ravel skilfully manages to deconstruct the Viennese Waltz.
His choices range from an emotionally pivotal moment in Bach's B minor Mass, to a piano piece on which he had a teenage crush, plus a madcap movement by John Adams played by Nicholas's own Aurora Orchestra.

At 2 o'clock Nicholas reveals his Must Listen piece - a rarity from 1871 that he'd like to introduce to everyone.

A Tandem Production for BBC Radio 3.

SAT 15:00 Sound of Dance (b09zmqh1)
Akram Khan

The programme explores Akram's background in traditional Indian Kathak dance, and looks back over his career to date, focusing on his collaborations with composers such as Nitin Sahwney, Jocelyn Pook, Steve Reich and Vincenzo Lamagna. Akram also talks about his version of Giselle, which appear in cinemas this week, and about his new piece Xenos, which receives its UK premiere next month.

Continuing with the Indian dance theme, Katie's Classic Score of the Week is Ludwig Minkus's "La Bayadere".

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (b09zmqh9)
Mark-Anthony Turnage: Coraline

Kate Molleson presents the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Coraline - an operatic version of the dark fantasy tale by Neil Gaiman, directed by Aletta Collins with libretto by Rory Mullarkey. Soprano Mary Bevan sings the title-role with a cast including mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately and baritone Alexander Robin Baker who are making their Royal Opera debuts. Sian Edwards conducts the Britten Sinfonia.

During the interval, Kate is joined by guest Fiona Maddocks with contributions from Mark-Anthony Turnage and Mary Bevan.

Neil Gaiman has transformed the landscape of children's literature with his highly inventive, atmospheric and otherworldly narratives. His prize-winning novella, Coraline is packed with astonishing imagery - a much-loved story about a girl who discovers a door in her parents' house, leading to an entirely different place and family. For Mark-Anthony Turnage "the fundamental message beneath the story is that we shouldn't be afraid to do what we believe is right. Coraline is brave, not because she doesn't cry or get scared, but because despite these things she still tries her best and doesn't give up. That's why I wanted to write Coraline, because here's a message well worth telling; through opera or in any other way."

SAT 21:30 Between the Ears (b09zmqhd)
In Praise of Shadows

Published in 1933, In Praise of Shadows, remains a cornerstone of design thinking; a classic description of the collision between the shadows of traditional Japanese interiors and the dazzling light of the modern age. DJ Nick Luscombe retraces the journey of author Junichiro Tanizaki from the neon lights of Tokyo in the West to the very heart of traditional Japan in Eastern Kyoto.

In the upside down world of Tanizaki everything might have been different if science had been invented in the East. He explains that the radio and the gramophone are Western inventions, intended to convey the pomp and splendour of Western instruments and compositions. The Japanese love of silence or 'Ma' could never perhaps be best conveyed by loudspeaker. Today Naomi Kashiwagi explores this idea through the conceptual art piece 'Gramophonica', replaying old sounds and even traditional materials like Japanese tissue paper on a wind up gramophone with her own DIY stylus to capture otherworldly inherent sounds, sounds that might have been.

To understand how the concept of 'Ma' influences all of Japanese culture Nick talks to design guru Kenya Hara of Muji and Japan House and architect Kengo Kuma who recently designed the V&A in Dundee and the new Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. Finally in Kyoto Nick explores what we might all gain from the ancient traditions of Eastern thinking with Noh Theatre expert Diego Pellachia and curator of space Robert Yellin.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b09zmvm4)
Anne Sebba

Michael Berkeley's guest is Anne Sebba, the best-selling biographer of iconic women including Wallis Simpson, Winston Churchill's mother Jennie, Laura Ashley, and Mother Teresa.

Her most recent book tells the stories of the women of Paris in the 1940s. She follows the lives of housewives, Resistance fighters, shop girls, prostitutes and celebrities, all the time examining the big, small - and often impossible - choices people have to make in wartime. And we hear part of an operetta composed by one of these women, imprisoned by the Nazis at Ravensbruck.

Anne tells Michael about her controversial biography of Wallis Simpson in which she claims that we should have more understanding of her situation and more admiration for her as a person - and she argues that Wallis married Edward with great reluctance.

We hear Artur Rubinstein playing Rachmaninov, which brings back memories for Anne of interviewing him when she was a young journalist, and she chooses music by Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Verdi. A passionate advocate for the celebration of women's lives and talents, Anne chooses performances by Robyn Archer, Maria Callas and Margaret Fingerhut.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (b09zmvmh)
Is Music a Universal Language?

What is music good for? In our concluding link with the BBC's Civilisations season, The Listening Service asks one of the most fundamental questions we can about music, a claim often made on the art-form's behalf in a list of reasons why it's an essential good: is music a universal language?

It's a seductive idea, that music's primal activation of the world of our emotions, bypassing the rationalising parts of our brains, means that it has an essential communicative function that carries across cultures in the way that no other phenomenon of the human imagination can. Music binds us together, because Beethoven and the blues sound the same and mean the same whether you're listening in Oklahoma or Osaka.

It's a nice theory, but on The Listening Service, we'll reveal the limits of these claims to the universal. And we'll suggest that music separates and defines us just as much as it brings us together. Not giving the game away, but music isn't a universal language: it's much, much more powerful than that - as we'll discover!

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b09zmvmm)
Supernatural Japan

In this Sunday Feature, historian Chris Harding travels from Tokyo to the deep countryside of Japan's north east to tell the alternative story of the country, looking at how, throughout their history, Japanese people have used ghosts and ghost stories to make sense of themselves and their place in the world.

In the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, taxi drivers in the area reported 'ghost riders' in their vehicles. The local fire services were called out regularly to locations that turned out to be deserted - but when they started praying for the souls of the dead before returning to base, they were never called back again to the same site...

For most of us Japan is the ultimate secular, modern, and future-looking society. But what we encounter in breakthrough films like Ring is a small hint at a vast cultural landscape almost entirely unknown to us: ghosts and the ghostly, never far from the surface in popular consciousness in Japan and breaking through at times of transition or crisis.

Producer: Luke Mulhall.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b072hw4k)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), In the Shadow of Monteverdi

This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Documentary evidence relating to Strozzi's life is scarce, but we know she was born in Venice and was likely the illegitimate daughter of librettist and poet, Giulio Strozzi. Through him, Barbara came into contact with Monteverdi and later Cavalli who'd be her teacher. She was also introduced to the literati of Venice, whom she would sing for, and act as mistress of ceremonies for their meetings of the Accademia degli Unisoni, established by her father. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

Barbara Strozzi was fortunate to grow up in a household where she'd meet visitors such as Monteverdi, Cavalli, and other famous Venetian artists of the time. Her mother, Isabella Garzoni, was the long-term servant of the librettist Giulio Strozzi, and may have been a courtesan. Barbara Strozzi was possibly educated in one of Venice's famous ospedali, but she also mentioned in one of her publications that she was taught music by the composer Cavalli. Giulio Strozzi was keen for his illegitimate daughter to be educated to increase her future prospects, but this may also have involved grooming her for the life of a courtesan.

MON 22:00 Music Matters (b0b03cg9)
Night Blossoms

With Tom Service. As part of Radio 3's Night Blossoms, Tom visits Japan during cherry blossom season, finding musical portals to other worlds: from Noh theatre to Japanoise, and from Bach to today's composers fusing ancient and modern ideas. Tom is accompanied by the violinist and translator Midori Komachi.

At a traditional house in the back streets of Tokyo, Tom meets the composer Yuka Takechi, shakuhachi player Rei Jin and koto player Yoko Nishi, who reveal the meaning of Ma, the space between words, objects, and sounds which is full of significance for Japanese culture: and a principal which underpins much of the music in this programme.

Dating back to the 14th century, Noh theatre is known for its rich repertoire of stories, distinctive staging, masks, costumes and music. To discover the secrets of how it connects this world with the world beyond the stage, Tom meets Diego Pellecchia, an Italian-born Noh practitioner who teaches at Kyoto University, and visits the Kita school in Tokyo to witness Noh's unique final rehearsal, the moshiawase, for the play Sakuragawa (The River of Cherry Blossoms).

At Tokyo's Soup bar, an influential venue for Japan's noise music scene, singer Taichi Nagura of Endon explains how his extreme vocal techniques enable him to transcend to other dimensions. And on the other end of the spectrum, conductor Masaaki Suzuki tells Tom about his annual performances of the St Matthew Passion, and how Bach's music has helped Japanese audiences in times of natural disaster.

And in Inokashira Park, with people gathering for one of Japan's famous Night Blossom parties, Tom encounters one of the country's leading composers, whose other-worldly music combines the delicacy of blossoming flowers with the untamed power of nature: Toshio Hosokawa.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b072hy7c)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), Mixing with the Intellectual Elite

This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime, containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

By the 1630s there are accounts of Barbara Strozzi socialising with intellectuals in Venice, including members of the Accademia degli Incogniti. Her father Giulio Strozzi was part of these literary circles where Barbara first started to prove herself as a virtuoso singer, entertaining the men at these gatherings. Her voice was so admired that composers such as Nicolo Fontei wrote and dedicated music to her. By 1637 Giulio established the Accademia degli Unisoni where Barbara would showcase her musical activities further and act as the Mistress of Ceremonies, presiding over their debates, and awarding prizes.

Dark Blossoms, Happy Families

Delving further into the darker sides of Japan's recent history, Christopher Harding explores two starkly contrasting models of "family" in turn-of-the-century Japan. One was a neo-Victorian idyll, epitomised by the Emperor serving as the benevolent head of a national family; the other was symbolised by a woman who joined a group of anarchists plotting to assassinate the Emperor and by feminists who opposed "the heavy investment of powerful people in this familial ideal."
Producer: Sheila Cook.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b072hy7k)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), An Object of Desire

This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

By the time that Barbara Strozzi was nineteen, reports started to appear in print of her capabilities and virtuosity as a singer. It was also mentioned that she had an amorous gaze, with the beauty of Venus and likened to the Phoenix of the day. Not all the reports which came into print praised Barbara Strozzi, and it was suggested by some that her father Giulio was pimping out his daughter. Dr Sara Pecknold discusses a painting of Barbara Strozzi from the time, which reinforces this idea of the composer as an object of sexual desire. By 1644, Strozzi had launched her career as a composer, publishing her Opus One collection of madrigals.

Landmark: Rashomon

David Peace, Natasha Pulley, Yuna Tasaka and Jasper Sharp join Rana Mitter.

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's short story 'In a Grove', published in 1922, became the basis for the 1950 film from Akira Kurosawa 'Rashōmon', one of the first Japanese films to gain worldwide critical acclaim. 'The Rashōmon Effect' has become a byword for the literary technique where the same event is presented via the different and incompatible testimonies from the characters involved. David Peace's new book 'Patient X' is a novelised response to Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's last years and his death by suicide at the age of 35. Natasha Pulley is a novelist and Japanophile with a particular interest in Japanese literature of the 1920s, and in the unreliable narrator implied by use of the Rashōmon Effect. And Jasper Sharp is a writer and curator, author of the Historical Dictionary of Japanese Cinema.

Producer: Luke Mulhall.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b072hy7m)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), Strozzi and Money

This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

A few years after Barbara Strozzi had published her first set of madrigals, she brought out a second group of works in 1651. This Opus Two collection demonstrated Strozzi coming into her own as a composer, and shows less of the influence of her father, the librettist Giulio Strozzi. In her twenties she was also something of a financial wizard, making shrewd investments and loaning money. It was also during this period that she became a mother. Three of her four children were fathered by Giovanni Paolo Vidman, who was already married. Upon Vidman's death, financial support was given to Strozzi by Vidman's widow. Within a few years Strozzi was hard at work again, bringing further compositions into print, including her only collection of sacred works. All of her published works have significant dedications, and we see from this that Strozzi was keenly seeking patronage.

THU 22:00 Free Thinking (b0b01xk3)
Tokyo Idols and Urban life

Tokyo used to be presented as the ultimate hyper-modern city. But after years of economic recession the Tokyo of today has another side. A site of alienation and loneliness, anxiety about conformity and identity, it is a place where self-professed 'geeks' (or 'otaku'), mostly single middle-aged men, congregate in districts like Akibahara to pursue fanatical interests outside mainstream society, including cult-like followings of teenage girl singers known as Tokyo Idols.

Novelist Tomouki Hoshino, photographer Suzanna Mooney, writer/photographer Mariko Nagai and film-maker Kyoko Miyake look at life in the city for the Heisei generation. Presented by Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough.

Director Kyoko Miyake has made a film called Tokyo Idols which looks at the obsession of middle aged men with superstar teenage girls who make a living online
Suzanne Mooney's photographs depict the urban landscapes of Tokyo.
Novelist Tomouki Hoshino's latest book to be translated into English is called ME. It's about rootless millennials and suicide.
Mariko Nagai is an author and photographer who has written for children and adults. Her books include Instructions for the Living and Irradiated Cities.

The translator was Bethan Jones and the speakers were all in the UK to take part in events as part of Japan Now - a festival at the British Library in London, and in Manchester, Sheffield, Norwich. Programmed by Modern Culture in partnership with the Japan Foundation and Sheffield University.

Producer: Luke Mulhall.

THU 22:45 The Essay (b0b01xk5)
Dark Blossoms, The Art of the Heist

Christopher Harding tells the story of a famous crime, the robbery of hundreds of millions of yen in 1968 - which also serves as a metaphor for the theft of postwar promises of liberty and openness in 1960s Japan. The country's "radical moment" was purloined in the interests of rapid economic growth and embrace of an American alliance.
Producer: Sheila Cook.

Her influences range from traditional Japanese gagaku and Western opera to avant-garde and contemporary pop vocalists.

FRI 00:00 Late Junction (b0b020lb)
Otomo Yoshihide's Late Junction Mixtape

A Late Junction mixtape from the mind of Japanese composer, experimental guitarist, turntablist and producer Otomo Yoshihide.

Otomo Yoshihide has long been one of the most dynamic forces in Japanese experimental music. Heralded as Tokyo's premiere noise DJ, he's spent decades at the cutting edge of Japan's experimental underground. His influences range from the musique concrète of Pierre Schaefer and Pierre Henry to the Japanese free jazz of alto sax player Kaoru Abe and guitarist Masayuki Takayanagi.

In 1990, he founded the influential group Ground Zero, the first free improvising musicians to use turntables, and has since been involved in countless music projects including Mosquito Paper, Project Fukushima, Sampling Virus and his New Jazz Quartet.

He has also received much acclaim for his soundtracks for film and television, having produced over 70 film soundtracks, and was awarded the Japan Record Award for best composer in 2013.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b072hy7p)
Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), Off to the Nunnery

This week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Barbara Strozzi. She was one of the most important composers of Italian cantatas in the seventeenth century and, probably, also a Venetian courtesan. Strozzi published eight collections of vocal works during her lifetime containing over one hundred works in total, and her music travelled as far as Austria, Germany and England. Dr Sara Pecknold joins Donald Macleod to help lift the veil on this elusive composer.

By the late 1650s, there are reports of many musical activities taking place at the home of Barbara Strozzi. She was still publishing collections of music, which she dedicated to nobles and powerful people. Strozzi was seeking a patron, which she never achieved. During her final years she was keen to secure a better future for her children, and one of them became a nun, and another a monk. Strozzi's last publication was in 1664, but we know that she didn't stop composing at this point. In 1677 she travelled to Padua where she died at the age of 58.

Simon Trpceski plays Grieg, Mendelssohn and Rimsky-Korsakov

Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski isn't afraid of a challenge: the climax of this recital at Birmingham Town Hall is Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral tour de force Scheherazade - but performed by one man! This arrangement for solo piano by Paul Gilson shouldn't faze Trpčeski, who has been described as "a first rate virtuoso" by The Arts Desk.

The programme also includes Grieg's masterful Holberg Suite in its original composition for piano and a selection of Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words.
Mark Forrest presents this recital from the Grade I-listed Birmingham Town Hall, with its imposing Roman-inspired architecture and enormous pipe organ, once played by Felix Mendelssohn himself.

Since being chosen as one of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists back in 2001, Simon Trpčeski has established himself both as an eminent recitalist and soloist with orchestras around the world, as well as a passionate advocate of Macedonia's cultural scene.

Dark Blossoms, Japan Refusal

Christopher Harding asks if mental illness in Japan may actually be a sign of a rejection of a narrowly-conceived modernity? From the neurasthenia of the great novelist Natsume Soseki to the "hikikomori" or acute social withdrawal of the 1990s, he questions whether these conditions may actually be a rational response to a tightly governed society: "their deep disorientation may be the result of living in a rapidly-changing society and possessing an almost pathological degree of clear-sightedness" This is the final episode in a series of essays in which he explores the doubts and misgivings which have beset the rapid modernisation of mainstream life in Japan. Producer: Sheila Cook.
