9.30am
Building a Library on Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius with Mark Lowther.

Following the triumph of Elgar's Enigma Variations, The Dream of Gerontius is a work by a confident composer at the height of his powers. But sharing the fate of so many first performances, its 1900 premiere was not a popular success. Under-rehearsed and chaotic, partly due to the complexity and modernity of the writing, there was another issue, too: the Anglican community bridled at the work's uncompromisingly Catholic text by Cardinal Newman. More than a century later, in more ecumenical times, the work is part of the standard repertoire of choral societies up and down the land and has been most often recorded by UK conductors, choirs and orchestras.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b09hrp4s)
Michael Frayn

The playwright and novelist Michael Frayn shares his musical passions with Michael Berkeley.

Michael Frayn is an acute observer of the absurdities and pain of the human condition, and his writing career has spanned journalism, novels, philosophy, Russian translation, and plays both philosophical and farcical. Noises Off, his 1982 farce about a farce, has become one of the twentieth century's best loved and most successful plays and is frequently described as the funniest farce ever written. Equally praised have been his philosophical plays such as Copenhagen and Democracy.

He tells Michael about his childhood in Surrey, which partly inspired his award-winning novel Spies, his time in the army learning Russian, and the pain and pleasure of farce - the most technically demanding of all literary forms.

And he shares his lifelong love of classical music, choosing pieces by Beethoven, Prokofiev, Mozart, Mahler, and Brahms - and a piece by his late mother-in-law Muriel Herbert.

Mahler

Mahler's music - Huge eighty minute long symphonies, enormous orchestral forces, it should be thought of as the epitome of a complex cerebral classical music culture, surely?

Not if Mahler has anything to do with it.

Tom Service discovers how Mahler is the first non-classical Classical composer, how he happily harvested his tunes from everwhere from folk songs and children's rhymes to the landscape and nature, and how we as listeners are the most crucial part of them all and why he wanted every one of us to hear his music differently.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b09hrr7n)
Laura Ingalls' America

Children's writer Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie novels have been much loved since they first appeared in the Great Depression for celebrating the pioneer mythology of American identity: immigration, self-determination and family values. Some liberals claim her as a feminist before her time, while the conservative right see her as a symbol of traditional American ideals. Samira Ahmed wonders if she can be both and what the battle over her legacy reveals about modern America.

Heading for Wilder's Rocky Ridge Farm in Mansfield, Missouri, where Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote her novels in her 60s, Samira explores the strange mixture of fact and fiction in the stories. In an America battling over Civil War memorials, the stone house has become a landmark of survival and etched into the tapestry of America. Here Samira meets fans and critics in an attempt to understand why Wilder, a survivor of hard winters, drought and two of the greatest financial crashes in US history, has inspired such love in generations of readers. But also to confront the challenges to the idea of her as a great American heroine because of the genocide of Native Americans that her books obliquely describe and whose land her family's pioneer generation built their lives on.

Samira speaks to biographers Pamela Smith Hill, John E Miller and William Anderson, academics Clive Webb and Frances W Kaye, the Director and President of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum, Jean Cody, and actor Dean Butler from the television series Little House on the Prairie.

Produced by Anishka Sharma
Assistant Producers: Simon Jarvis and James Clarke

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09hs23y)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), Lake of tears

Donald Macleod explores the rich vein of fairy tale and fantasy in Tchaikovsky's music. Today, Siegfried amongst the swans, and music to mark the passing of the year.

Before Tchaikovsky was commissioned to write the music for a ballet about a flight of swan-maidens afloat on a lake of tears and the love-struck prince who sets them free, Russian ballet music had traditionally been the province of jobbing 'specialists' rather than fully-fledged art-composers. Tchaikovsky's initial inspiration was largely financial, and he came to the project with little understanding of how to write music to be danced to. But he was a quick student, and soon began to warm to his brief - in the process producing some of his most memorable music. His piano suite The Seasons - actually a sequence of 12 pieces, one for each month of the year - was largely written in moments stolen from his work on Swan Lake.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09hw0ll)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), Fantasizing symphonically

Donald Macleod explores the rich vein of fairy tale and fantasy in Tchaikovsky's music. Today, a pair of symphonic fantasies - one inspired by Shakespeare, the other by Dante.

Should there be a tempest in The Tempest? That was one of Tchaikovsky's questions for the leading Russian art and music critic Vladimir Stasov, who had asked the composer what his next work would be. Tchaikovsky had several ideas in mind, and it was Stasov who pushed him in the direction of Shakespeare's tale of shipwreck on Prospero's enchanted isle. Stasov was very much of the opinion that Tchaikovsky should indeed include music depicting said severe weather event, and he obliged magnificently. Severe weather was also a feature of the scenario for Francesca da Rimini, which tells in music the story of Francesca, the beautiful daughter of a noble Italian family, and her lover Paolo, whose adulterous love affair was rewarded with punishment in the second circle of hell, lashed for all eternity by terrible whirlwinds.

The Carducci Quartet have chosen music by Beethoven, who like Shostakovich triumphed creatively despite political upheaval and personal adversity - his 'Serioso' quartet was composed as Napoleon laid siege to Vienna and while the composer was already fighting his own battle of losing his hearing.

The two works in the second half - the popular sacred solo motet, Exsultate Jubilate (originally written for a castrato) and the brilliantly vibrant Symphony No. 29 - were composed when the composer was still a teenager.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09hw37x)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), The complete decline of the choreographic art!

Donald Macleod explores the rich vein of fairy tale and fantasy in Tchaikovsky's music. Today, enchanted sleep and a brush with the supernatural.

No-one likes a cast-off, and Tchaikovsky was no exception. At first that extended even to the libretto his beloved brother Modest had written for the now almost completely forgotten composer Nikolay Klenovsky, based on Pushkin's short story The Queen of Spades. The collaboration was aborted and the libretto became available. Initially Tchaikovsky was dismissive, but he came round to the idea and set to work with gusto. The story concerns a gambling-addicted army officer, Hermann, who's in love with Lisa. Lisa's guardian, an old countess, is reputedly in possession of a failsafe formula for winning at cards, but when Hermann tries to force it out of her she dies of fright. The Queen of Spades wasn't an ace in the hole at its first performance in December 1890, but critical hostility quickly receded, and it's retained a firm place in the repertoire ever since. The same is true of the ballet Tchaikovsky completed immediately beforehand - The Sleeping Beauty. Tsar Alexander II achieved almost British levels of understatement when, after attending a special dress rehearsal of the complete ballet, he gave his considered opinion: 'very nice'.

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09hw5r5)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), A 'worthless' masterpiece

Donald Macleod explores the rich vein of fairy tale and fantasy in Tchaikovsky's music. Today, a snow maiden, the Tsarina's slippers, and the "utterly worthless" 1st Piano Concerto.

In the early part of 1873, Moscow's Maly Theatre was closed for renovation. While the works were being completed, the company shared a stage with the the opera and ballet companies of the Bolshoi, which gave rise to the idea of a 'spectacular' production involving all three troupes. A fairy-tale subject was agreed on - The Snow Maiden - and Tchaikovsky was approached to write the incidental music. He completed it in record time - 19 numbers in a single month. His next project, a comic fantasy set in an imaginary Ukrainian village, took far longer to finish - 11 years. This was Vakula the Smith or, as it later became, Cherevichki, based on Gogol's play Christmas Night. Tchaikovsky came to regard it as "musically well-nigh my best opera", but sadly neither contemporary audiences nor posterity have agreed with this judgement. When Tchaikovsky played through his new piano concerto for his friend and mentor Nikolai Rubinstein, once again the reaction wasn't the one he had hoped for: "bad ... vulgar ... absolutely unplayable ... utterly worthless" - a misjudgement that must be up there with Decca turning down The Beatles. Fortunately, Tchaikovsky stuck to his guns and published his First Piano Concerto unaltered - save for the removal of the dedication to Rubinstein. The audience at its Boston premiere loved it, as audiences have continued to do ever since.

Shostakovich Plus 2017, Shostakovich Plus: Trio Wanderer

Fiona Talkington presents Trio Wanderer playing Copland, Suk and Shostakovich as part of the Shostakovich Plus series at LSO St. Luke's.

In the third instalment of this series which partners chamber works by Shostakovich with music by other composers, Trio Wanderer have chosen music by Aaron Copland and Josef Suk. Copland's Vitebsk is "a study on a Jewish theme" and indeed the last movement of Shostakovich's second Piano Trio, which closes the programme is also based on Jewish melodies. Shostakovich wrote this work as a memorial to a friend - the music critic Ivan Sollertinsky - which links it to Elegie - a tribute from Suk to the writer Julius Zeyer.

THU 23:00 Late Junction (b09hzjx6)
faUSt and Lone Taxidermist

Celebrate an Industrial Christmas by listening to the latest in the line of Late Junction collaborations, in which musicians who have never met have a day to play in the BBC's Maida Vale studios. For this special session Jean-Hervé Peron and Zappi Diermaier from the pioneering Krautrock band faUSt make music with erotic-electronic artist Natalie Sharp, aka Lone Taxidermist.

For this collaboration session Natalie Sharp will be keeping it clean with cling film, scanners and a flautist covered in contact mics. Meanwhile, Jean-Hervé Peron from faUSt will be crafting musique concrète with his trademark, fully operational cement mixer, this time filled with festive baubles. Celebrate Christmas the Late Junction way...

Known for taking a chainsaw to large sheets of metal on stage, or playing a cement mixer while doing their ironing, Franco-German band faUSt have been disassembling the nuts and bolts of rock music since they formed in Wümme in 1971. Possibly the strangest band ever to have signed to Virgin Records, faUSt swung from dadaist tape experiments to propulsive space rock, all the time eschewing the hallmark sounds of the Krautrock genre that they were associated with. They have previously worked with the likes of Nurse with Wound, Gnod and Tony Conrad.

Cumbrian-born Natalie Sharp is a body painter, performance artist, and noise-maker who's been described as "an unholy amalgamation of Grace Jones, Ari Up and John Cooper Clarke". Her debut album as Lone Taxidermist came out earlier this year and featured dark electronic pop marked by a taste for the grotesque. Her live performances are a carnival of leering facemasks, latex outfits, and whipped cream.

Produced by Jack Howson for Reduced Listening.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b09hw844)
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), An odd couple

Donald Macleod explores the rich vein of fairy tale and fantasy in Tchaikovsky's music. Today, The Nutcracker and the work it was originally double-billed with - the opera Iolanta.

"It's a pity that so much fine music is expended on nonsense unworthy of attention", wrote the critic of the St Petersburg Gazette after the premiere. "Infinitely poorer than The Sleeping Beauty", was Tchaikovsky's own verdict on what's proved to be probably his most popular ballet. But his lack of enthusiasm for The Nutcracker is hardly surprising, given the major headache its composition caused him. In fact Tchaikovsky became so depressed by the "colourless, dry, hasty and wretched" music he felt he was producing that he begged the Director of the Imperial Court Theatre, Prince Vsevolozhsky, to release him from his contract. Fortunately for us, Vsevolozhsky persuaded Tchaikovsky to summon up the inner strength necessary to complete his score. Why did it give him so much trouble? Part of the problem may have lain in his initial reservations about the project - in particular what he judged to be an unsatisfactory adaptation of ETA Hoffman's original story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by Alexandre Dumas senior. Tchaikovsky had no such doubts about the plot of the one-act opera that somewhat curiously shared the bill with The Nutcracker in its opening run, Iolanta - based on Henrik Hertz's one-act play King René's Daughter.

Fiona Talkington presents Meta4 and Alasdair Beatson playing Mustonen and Shostakovich as part of the Shostakovich Plus series at LSO St. Lukes.

In today's concert we hear two works written by composer-performers - indeed Dmitri Shostakovich and Olli Mustionen both played the piano parts in the initial outings of these piano quintets. Both works have similarities - the use of contrapuntal techniques in movements marked Prelude, Fugue and Passacaglia and both works are emotionally direct. The Mustonen is an outgoing and energetic work whilst the Shostakovich, in contrast, is a more introspective piece.
