9.30am Proms Composer: Gerald Barry
In his setting of texts the Irish composer Gerald Barry delights in the unexpected, in his instrumental music he commands the senses, all of which belies the complexity of his underlying structures. Growing up in rural Cork, he was introduced to music through listening to the radio and has vividly described his visceral reaction to hearing a Handel opera aria for the first time. He studied with Stockhausen and Kagel, and the composer Thomas Adès has described his music as "unprecedented". Andrew explores recordings of this intriguing composer's music ahead of the world premiere of his piece 'Canada' in Monday evening's Prom; commissioned by the BBC and performed by the CBSO under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0831bt2)
Charlie Phillips

Charlie Phillips is a Jamaican-born photographer whose work has been exhibited across the world, and is part of the permanent collections of The Tate and the V&A. He's best known for his photographs of the area of London where he arrived to live as a boy: Notting Hill. His images are full of the atmosphere of Notting Hill in the late 50s and 60s: slum housing, market traders, churchgoers, children playing on the streets - and they're now valued as a unique record of the experience of that Windrush Generation. Later in the sixties, Charlie Phillips photographed the student protests in Paris, pop festivals and rock stars, while making a living as a paparazzo, chasing Elizabeth Taylor around. Simon Schama has described him as a "Visual Poet - chronicler, champion, witness of a gone world - one of Britain's great photo-journalists."

But Charlie Phillips didn't set out to be a photographer; instead, he wanted to be an opera singer, and during his time as a paparazzo in Milan he achieved his ambition, singing from the stage of La Scala in Verdi's Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

In Private Passions Charlie Phillips talks about his passion for opera, and about the racism he encountered when he first arrived in Britain. And although Charlie Phillips has now left West London, he goes back to Notting Hill almost every day - he can't afford to live there any more, but it's where he feels most at home.

Musical Choices include Verdi, Puccini, Dave Brubeck, and a rarely-performed opera by the African-American composer Scott Joplin, about the importance of education in the black community. Phillips also loves hymns and chooses "How Great Thou Art", a rousing evangelical hymn he has planned for his own funeral.

Produced by Elizabeth Burke
A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

'Our family discussed the Revolution of 1905 constantly ... The stories deeply affected my imagination.' Born in the shadow of one of Russia's darkest hours - the slaughter of over 1,000 peaceful protesters outside the Winter Palace in St Petersburg - Shostakovich carried its ghosts with him throughout his life. They are given voice here in a concert that brings together the wordless songs of the composer's Preludes and Fugues with the more explicit homage of the Ten Poems on Texts by Revolutionary Poets. In the last of its three appearances this season, the Latvian Radio Choir is joined by Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov.

Partition

August 1947 - just seventy years ago - and Britain grants independence to India but at the same time splits its dominion to create Pakistan. The actor Sanjeev Bhaskar, whose own family was caught up in the turmoil, joins Ayesha Dharker in a programme that traces the emotional and psychological cost of Partition. There are readings from the work of Intizar Husain, Saadat Hasan Manto, Kushwant Singh, Amrita Pritam and Anita Desai, amongst others, and music that reflects the turbulence - whether it's a rallying cry, a lament, the sound of stunned incredulity or simply strangulated laughter in the face of bureaucratic insanity.

Partition deepens religious divisions on the subcontinent. Twelve million people are displaced and are forced to find new homes in the new states. Sickness and starvation claim many on the road; many more die in sectarian violence. Some historians put the death toll as high as two million. It's a huge political earthquake in the life of southern Asia and the aftershock is still being felt today.

John Butt, conductor

The climax of the Proms Reformation Day is a complete performance of Bach's St John Passion. 'More daring, forceful and poetic' than the St Matthew Passion, according to Schumann, this is a work of almost operatic vividness that brings both a humanity and a painful immediacy to the Passion narrative. Bach specialist John Butt and his Dunedin Consort make their Proms debut in a performance that offers the audience the chance to join in the chorale-singing, reflecting how the work might originally have been heard in a church setting.

Producer Clive Portbury.

MON 22:00 Sunday Feature (b0739rh0)
Brainwash Culture

Professor Daniel Pick explores the enduring cultural obsession with brainwashing.

The word 'brainwashing' emerged during the Korean War. It was used to explain how American prisoners of war had ended up confessing to crimes they couldn't have committed.

Daniel talks to two men with direct experience of this. Robert Jay Lifton's work on 'thought reform' remains influential after sixty years, and was based in part on his interviews with just-released POWs as they sailed home to America from Korea in 1953. And David Hawkins is one of the handful of US POWs who, controversially, chose to stay in China - at least for several years.

But as Daniel explores, 'brainwashing' quickly shifted from a word describing a special form of torture, endured in distant camps and cells, to a way to worry about life in modern America. Advertising, television, huge corporations, a certain soft social conformity, the fear of communism - anxieties about all of these found a use for the new buzzword.

All this was attractive ground for film-makers. Long before The Manchurian Candidate, Hollywood was struggling to tell stories about brainwashing.

Films like The Ipcress File suggested brainwashing was a high-tech form of magic. Or was it just an unusually complicated form of brutality?

Ever since, from Men in Black to the Bourne movies via Homeland, brainwashing has played on our minds through our culture.

But as Daniel discovers, its roots go back well before its supposed birth in Korea - to the birth of mass democracy, and its signature artform, the movies.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b05vh43c)
The Meaning of Trees, Horse Chestnut

Despite being a much loved tree, the Horse Chestnut actually symbolises being there for sentiment rather than purpose, it is actually a pretty useless tree. By all means enjoy the ornamental aspect of the trees but the timber from horse chestnut is not good quality - there is plenty of it as the tree can gain bulk and volume quickly, but the wood is soft, weak and perishes easily. Its so-called chestnuts are pretty useless too. The poisons in them make processing them for food too costly. But its as conkers that its nuts make it have important meaning for us, as play and togetherness. An incomer and an imposter - from the Balkans, the name stuck, due to the horseshoe shape scars left in its trunk when the leaves fall off. It was such a raging fashion after its UK arrival that Capability Brown planted 4800 in one estate in Wiltshire alone. No wonder it has remained everywhere in the UK since. Its conkers and majestic presence will always endear it to us and this was enough for Anne Frank, who also succumbed to its charms, writing about a horse chestnut tree in the centre of Amsterdam, thus also a symbol of hope, of escape and of one day, a return to normality.

A third series of these popular tree essays is again written and presented by experienced essayist, Fiona Stafford, Professor of Literature at Somerville College Oxford, explores the symbolism, importance, topicality and surprises of five more trees common in the UK. Across the series of essays, our ambiguous relationship with trees is explored. The three series have prompted an illustrated book of the essays planned for 2015.

Crossing the Border - Poetry and Film

Right from the birth of cinema, film-makers have experimented with poetry in film. Matthew Sweet explores this overlooked history.

The Russian pioneer film-maker Dziga Vertov developed his celebrated montage technique out of Mayakovsky's poetry and the GPO Film Unit's 'Night Mail' with W H Auden's closing poem owes a good deal to these Russian experimentalists. Starting at the unlikely site of the studio where scenes from 'Night Mail' were shot and recorded eighty years ago, Matthew establishes this iconic film as an important blueprint for poets and film-makers since.

In recent times, the poets Tony Harrison and Simon Armitage have both made documentary films where their poems replaced conventional commentaries. Matthew hosts a reunion between Tony Harrison and his collaborator, the film director Peter Symes, as they relive the powerful moment of filming of the exhumation of a body in a Neapolitan necropolis. This moment poses core questions about film poems: what does the viewer hear and see, how do word and image relate to each other? With Simon Armitage, Matthew learns how his poetry on film gives a voice to the marginalised. Now, a burgeoning movement of experimental film-makers are creating a new space for the production, curation and distribution of film poems in festivals and in digital media, so as the mainstream media fragment, film poetry is returning to its avant garde roots as was exemplified by early film poem makers such as Germaine Dulac and Maya Deren.

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b05vh8sy)
The Meaning of Trees, Cherry

In many countries, cherries are there just to look pretty - a short party trick trotted out once a year which everyone loves and coos at, but then its got to be kept the rest of the year too. True, it has unrivalled spring blossoms, a truly stunning beauty, especially in large numbers. It has much-prized wood and fruit, both of which have a long British pedigree, yet man and global warming have removed 90 per cent of UK cherry trees since 1930. In other countries (Japan especially) it is a sacred tree as a flowering cherry, but the fruit has been monopolised by a few countries - Turkey and the USA especially. Apart from fruit, cherry trees are prized for their swirling, eye-ridden, colourful hardwood which is amongst the most prized for cabinetry and furniture making, and medicinally they can cure gout, fever and help us sleep.

Nick Luscombe

Nick Luscombe shares musical dispatches from places that aren't in the guidebook. We've an electro-acoustic postcard inspired by sea-snails from Belgian artist Lieven Martens; and the pace quickens with multi-tracked, 'multi-octave delirium' from Australian pianists Chris Abrahams and Anthony Pateras. Closer to the tourist trail, but with fresh ears, Nick shares his new field recordings of the Gion Matsuri festival that's held in Kyoto, Japan each summer.

WED 22:00 Sunday Feature (b07h68th)
Sherlock, Sigmund and Signor Morelli

Sigmund Freud and Sherlock Holmes - two of the most brilliant minds of the 19th century - one was fictional and the other real - both celebrated for their detective skills. But the third man in the title of this programme.... Signor Morelli, Giovanni Morelli...?

He links Holmes and Freud. He might have inspired them both. Who was he?

Acclaimed author and game writer, Naomi Alderman , brings to life the long-overlooked tale of how art historian Giovanni Morelli (1816-1891) formulated a new theory of attribution in the visual arts - through his close analysis of detail. Is that a Botticelli ear, or a Titian ear?

It's a process which continues to this day, and has played a vital role in the market for Old Masters. In the mid-19th century, Morelli's eye proved invaluable to museums in Europe, as he sifted through their collections. Previously, art historians had relied on documentary evidence to confirm the creator of a painting or drawing - or had hoped to find similarities by examining settings or subject matter. Morelli's emphasis on the tiniest details - the painting of hands and ears in particular - was revolutionary.

Sculptor Eleanor Crook takes Naomi on a tour of the V and A, putting the so called 'Morelli method' into action.

The great historian, Professor Carlo Ginzburg, believes that Morelli may also have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Sigmund Freud in their creations - both the detective Sherlock Holmes, and the unconscious 'tell'.

Novelist and playwright Simon Brett, describes Sherlock Holmes in action: "As a medical man, you are aware, Watson, that there is no part of the human body which varies so much as the human ear. Each ear is as a rule quite distinctive, and differs from all other ones." Our medical man is Mr Donald Sammut, Morelli enthusiast and hand surgeon, who also sketches the details of every hand he operates on.

Dr Brett Kahr introduces Naomi to the influence Morelli had over Freud's thinking, as she pulls his book from the shelves of the famous study in the Freud Museum.

Dr Valentina Locatelli and Luke Uglow reveals some surprising details in his rather mysterious life, whilst painter Daniel Easterbrook discusses his deep connection the work of the artists Giorgione, who Morelli famously and dramatically attributed the Dresden Venus.

Naomi Alderman discusses the 'Morelli method' with Director of the Warburg Institute, Professor David Freedberg, and art historian Peter Higginson, and picks apart the use of detail with Phillipa Perry, an important key in the understanding of art and ourselves, a trajectory which takes us to the heart of the modern age.

For a man of such unexpected influence, Morelli has slipped off the cultural map - but here's a chance to restore him to his rightful place.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b05vh8t8)
The Meaning of Trees, Holly

People don't think of holly as a tree, but it is very much a tree. In fact, it is one of our oldest, most enduring trees. A major meaning of Holly is timelessness - it was around in its current form long before the dinosaurs, over 160 million years of endurance of what we see today. That is an unusual achievement and proves its meaning as perfect design. Unlike the majority of trees, Holly also symbolises the separation of the sexes, having both male and female trees. Holly also means food and capture - the berries for birds, and its bark is boiled to produce sticky bird lime which is painted onto tree barks to catch song birds for food in the many countries that did and still do eat them.
The meaning of its name is holy, long being associated with Christmas and for centuries known as the holy tree. It also meant safety from witches, holly trees growing out of the tops of hedges were reputed to stop witches running along the hedge tops.
Holly wood is slow growing and so is very hard. It's whiteness gives good staining properties, so it was coloured black and passed off as much more valuable ebony. The wood of the holly became a global name thanks to its Californian suburb and a mistake.

Bela Bartok (1881-1945), Slide into War and Exile

Donald Macleod explores the life and career of composer Bela Bartok (1881-1945), one of the most influential composers of the 20th Century. As Europe slipped into World War II, Bartok wrote to a friend of how he felt the whole world was drifting into evil, restlessness and terror...and of the need to go far from the vicinity of what he called the "pestilence-ridden lands. Today's programme explores Bartok life as a Hungarian émigré in America and his final years away from the land he'd once loved.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London
Presented by Georgia Mann

Shabaka Hutchings (saxophones)
Christian Scott (trumpet)
Kandace Springs (vocals)
Metropole Orkest
conductor Jules Buckley

A giant of jazz, Charles Mingus (1922-79) combined the classic style of Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton with the radical spirit of black music of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and has influenced artists from Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello to Debbie Harry.

Following sell-out Quincy Jones and Jamie Cullum Proms last year, Jules Buckley returns - with his Metropole Orkest - to celebrate the life and music of this legendary composer, bandleader and bass-player. The Prom features Mingus favourites including 'Better Git It in Your Soul', 'Moanin'' and 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat', performed by a starry line-up of artists Kandace Springs, Shabaka Hutchings, Christian Scott and Leo Pellegrino.

Music in Peril

The rich and ancient tradition of Pakistan's Sufi qawwali music, made famous by the singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, is now under attack from Islamist extremists: musicians have been assassinated, and Sufi shrines bombed. Yet qawwali is also flourishing as never before through popular media programming. Lopa Kothari visits Pakistan to find out if a rich musical tradition is under threat and to hear from the musicians themselves.

THU 23:00 Late Junction (b091wfpt)
Peter Broderick and Peter Liversidge

Another Late Junction collaboration session uniting artists from different worlds for a day of music-making in the BBC's Maida Vale Studios. This time it was the turn of American composer Peter Broderick and British contemporary artist Peter Liversidge to see what they could create.

Born in 1987, Broderick began his career as a session musician for the likes of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, before joining Danish experimental ensemble Efterklang for five years. Meanwhile he has released several albums of solo material, ranging from sparse classical compositions to homemade folk music.

Liversidge, born 1973, is best known for creating proposals for art exhibitions that range from the simple to the impossible. While some remain deliberately unrealised, Liversidge has displayed his work internationally. For the opening of the Tate Modern extension in June 2016, Liversidge presented a choral piece for 500 singers.

For this session the two Peters were joined by multi-instrumentalist David Allred.

Also in the programme, experimental music from the world of Dutch underground synth, by Joost M. de Jong Jr.; and a new recording of unreleased Rip Rig and Panic material from former member Mark Springer.

Produced by Chris Elcombe for Reduced Listening.

FRI 21:30 Sunday Feature (b091wdfk)
The Supernatural North

Our imaginations tend to be more like medieval maps than modern ones. They team with myth and fantasy, dragons and anthropophagi. So, as our minds follow the compass point on the map North what is it that we see? Anodyne manufactured images of Santa and his elves, reindeer sleighs streaking across starry skies, snowmen and children "walking in the air", and polar bears frolicking in crystal caves of ice? Or are our thoughts drawn to the deeper and darker lore of the True North of mountain trolls, demons and direwolves, white witches and white walkers, snow queens and Sámi shamans?

Radio 3 New Generation Thinker Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough journeys to Arctic Norway in search of the supernatural world that haunts the imagination of writers such as Philip Pullman, A.S. Byatt, C.S. Lewis, Hans Christian Andersen and the authors of the medieval Icelandic sagas.

Following the trail of a 9th century Norseman called Ohthere, who travelled along the northern coast of Norway and down to the White Sea in Russia, Eleanor sets out from the coastal city of Tromsø in northern Norway. But whereas Ohthere wanted to survey the land and acquire walrus ivory, reindeer and exotic furs, Eleanor is looking for a stranger North - a place inhabited by mountain trolls, witches and giants.

Helping Eleanor in her quest for the supernatural North are writers Philip Pullman, author of Northern Lights; A.S. Byatt, author of Ragnarok; Professor Peter Davidson of Aberdeen University and author of The Idea of North; Dr Carolyne Larrington of Oxford University, a specialist in the Icelandic sagas; Professors Rune Hagen and Richard Holt of Tromso University and artist Jeffrey Vallance.

2017, Prom 55: Classical Music of Indian and Pakistan

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.

The Proms marks the 70th anniversary of partition and independence on the Indian subcontinent with a concert curated by Darbar Trust, producers of Darbar Festival, representing the classical music of India and Pakistan. Explore the region's diverse musical culture in performances celebrating three very different traditions. India's great maestro, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee performs ragas on the iconic sitar from the Hindustani music of North India, while South India's Carnatic music is more strongly melodic, coloured by the distinctive timbres of the Carnatic violin and veena. The Sufi music of Pakistan provides an ecstatic climax to this Late Night Prom, weaving rich, mesmeric tapestries of sound.
