9.30am - Building a Library
Building a Library survey on the music of Dame Ethel Smyth.

As part of Radio 3's celebration of International Women's Day, Kate Kennedy explores the music of an underrated English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Smyth showed tenacity and courage in pursuing her career as a composer at a time when this was an unusual path for women. Sir Thomas Beecham visited her when she was in prison for her political activities, and discovered her leaning out of a window conducting with a toothbrush as her fellow inmates marched around the prison yard.

Daniel Barenboim: 'The ABC of music-making is listening'

Tom Service talks to conductor Daniel Barenboim as the new Pierre Boulez Saal opens in Berlin, and the conductors Marin Alsop and Sylvia Caduff meet in Lucerne and compare notes on their lives on the podium.

Tom meets Daniel Barenboim in Berlin, as the city's newest concert hall, the Pierre Boulez Saal, opens its doors to the public. The hall will host up to 100 chamber music concerts a year, and is home to the Barenboim-Said Akademie, which Barenboim and the philosopher Edward Said created to train young musicians - mostly from the Middle East - and whose public face is the world famous West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. He's a musician who is always interested in the wider world and Barenboim talks to Tom about the middle eastern conflict, world politics, music education and whether or not music can change the world.

And looking ahead to International Women's Day, the American conductor Marin Alsop meets Sylvia Caduff in Lucerne. Caduff, who is now in her 80s, was Leonard Bernstein's assistant at the New York Philharmonic and was mentored by Herbert von Karajan. She became one of the first women to conduct the New York Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 1960s when it was virtually unheard of for a woman to conduct a top orchestra.

Marin was also mentored by Leonard Bernstein and a generation later has similarly broken new ground for women in conducting - becoming the first female conductor of the last night of the Proms, and with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra the first to hold a music director post of an American orchestra.

The two conductors compare notes on their lives in music, their roads to becoming conductors and breaking down barriers for female musicians.

SAT 18:30 Opera on 3 (b08h08qh)
Frank Martin's Le Vin herbe

From the Wales Millennium Centre, a story of love as Welsh National Opera perform Frank Martin's rarity Le Vin herbé. Considered to be more of an oratorio, Martin described it as his first major work in which he spoke his own language, a synthesis of French tonal music and Schoenberg's 12-tone technique. Le Vin herbé started life as a thirty minute oratorio setting words from Joseph Bédier's Roman de Tristan et Iseut. Martin later added two further scenes from Bédier's novel, where in this new form it was premiered in 1942 on the concert platform in Zurich to great success. Many performances followed around Europe and in 1948, Le Vin herbé received its first staged performance in Salzburg. Martin remained unconvinced about staging this work, but in the 1950s it was quickly taken up by opera houses and translated into other languages.

Le Vin herbé is in three parts, framed with a Prologue and an Epilogue. It is a tale of love and death, but one that is not overtly theatrical; a far cry musically from Wagner's interpretation in Tristan und Isolde. In this performance James Southall conducts the Welsh National Opera Chorus and Orchestra, who are joined by the soloists Caitlin Hulcup, Tom Randle and Catherine Wyn-Rogers. Andrew McGregor presents this opera, and is joined by Nigel Simeone to discuss this haunting and concentrated work about love.

SAT 21:30 Between the Ears (b08h08qm)
The Enemy Within

What happens when your home turns into a combat zone? When the sound of children playing, a kettle whistling, or a car backfiring transports your loved one back to a killing ground in Afghanistan or Iraq?

Night terrors, flashbacks and the hidden cost of war - this Between the Ears explores the inner lives of women who care for former service personnel suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

We hear a delicate and often wrenching patchwork of audio diaries and interviews recorded in kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms at moments when couples hit breaking point or encounter unexpected moments of tenderness. This fierce and intimate portrait reveals the true impact of military campaigns on British families - and the sacrifices made by a generation of women who refuse to give up on the soldiers they love.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b08h0cc0)
Vesna Goldsworthy

Thirty years ago, Vesna Goldsworthy fell in love with a young Englishman she met at a summer school in Bulgaria; she moved to England to be with him, much to the disapproval of her parents, arriving in London in 1986. Since then, she's established a reputation as a writer of great wit and originality: with her memoir, Chernobyl Strawberries; with her poetry; and in 2015 with her first novel, Gorsky, which became a best-seller and which was serialized on Radio 4. Vesna Goldsworthy is also a Professor of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.

In Private Passions, Vesna Goldsworthy talks to Michael Berkeley about being brought up in Belgrade during the Communist regime. The popular idea is of an era which was grey and philistine - but in fact there was a huge amount of classical music around. And when she moved to England, her friends and family were horrified. They asked, "How could you move to a country where there is no music"? She reveals why she started writing a memoir of her Serbian childhood: because her doctors told her she was dying of cancer, and she wanted to leave a record for her son. Happily, the cancer was cured, but it taught her a lifelong lesson: not to take life too seriously.

Vesna Goldsworthy's music choices include the Romanian-Serbian composer Ion Iovanovici; an Orthodox address to the Virgin by Divna Ljubojevic; the Sephardic song, "Adio Querida", by Yasmin Levy; and a popular Russian song from the Second World War. She ends with Purcell, a composer she discovered only after she moved to a country "with no music".

SUN 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b08g4fhc)
Wigmore Hall Mondays: David Greilsammer

From Wigmore Hall in London, Israeli pianist David Greilsammer plays sonatas by Scarlatti on the piano, and by John Cage on prepared piano.

Introduced by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

Scarlatti: Sonatas in D minor K213, D minor Kk141, E major Kk531, B minor Kk27, B minor Kk87, A minor Kk175, E major Kk380, D major Kk492
Cage: Sonatas Nos 14, 13, 11, 1, 12, 16, 5

David Greilsammer (piano & prepared piano)

Israeli pianist David Greilsammer intersperses two composers of highly individualistic and edgy keyboard sonatas. Scarlatti's sonatas, originally written for harpsichord, are among the most inventive, quirky and individualistic works not just of the Baroque era, but in all music; while in John Cage's sonatas for 'prepared piano', an ordinary piano is transformed by introducing objects such as screws, nails and rubbers between the strings to produce surprising new tone colours.

SUN 17:00 The Listening Service (b08h0cc6)
Deep Listening: Pauline Oliveros

Tom Service immerses himself in Deep Listening, a practice created by composer Pauline Oliveros. It's a kind of sonic meditation, a way of approaching music with more sensitivity that anyone can practise. In exploring this concept, Tom also explores the music of Oliveros, one of the most influential composers of the late twentieth century. She was a pioneer of electronic music, working with tape machines and early synthesizers in the 1060s in California.
She wrote: "Deep listening for me is learning to expand the perception of sounds to include the whole space/time continuum of sound - encountering the vastness and complexities as much as possible.".

Alice Coltrane: Her Sound and Spirit

As part of Radio 3's programming for International Women's Day, Kevin Le Gendre presents a portrait of Alice Coltrane - pianist, harpist, composer, improviser, bandleader, and ultimately Vedantic spiritual leader. An extraordinary character and musician, she took an approach to life and to music that conceded no boundaries, and she deserves greater recognition.

Hearing testaments to her musicianship as well as her personal strength and powerful presence, Le Gendre asks why her music isn't more widely known. She was greatly influenced by her husband John Coltrane, but has her musical contribution been overshadowed by his legacy?

Drawing on a wide range of influences from gospel to Stravinsky to Indian devotional music, and most often identified as a jazz musician, her music pushes the boundaries and defies conventional categorization. Kevin speaks to some of those who knew her best, including her son, Ravi Coltrane, sister Marilyn McLeod, and collaborators Carlos Santana and Reggie Workman, about the woman behind this singular musical voice.

Alice Coltrane's legacy is still evolving. As a younger generation of artists discover her music through reissues, and recordings of her previously unreleased devotional music come into circulation, her influence continues to spread far beyond the realms of jazz music.

Producer Laura Yogasundram.

SUN 21:00 Drama on 3 (b08h0ccd)
The American Grandmother

David Pownall's powerful new play The American Grandmother is a compelling family drama set in his home city of Liverpool and spans a period of some 30 years. When attending a friend's wedding in 1916, Leone (21) meets and instantly marries a young soldier destined for the front. Estranged from her family she goes to live with her husband's relatives together with her young son, John. However, after her husband Richard is killed, she leaves the boy with them and 'escapes' to America. Many years later she decides to return after she hears from his widow that John has been killed. Overcoming opposition, distrust and outright hostility she finds herself evermore involved with her estranged Liverpool family as she struggles to make them face reality and accept change so that her two young grandsons can have a different life away from the grief and guilt which engulfs them. Above all, she recognises that she must find a way for her eldest grandson to escape from the stifling clutches of his hard-living grandfather - a man with whom she finds she has a certain rapport.

Having written many times about Liverpool, David has a rich grasp and understanding of character, period, language and humour. He also uses his skill as radio dramatist to bring extra, unexpected dimensions to this poignant and moving story.

Also coming from Merseyside, Martin Jenkins has directed some 25 of David's radio plays over a 30 year period. He is especially pleased on this occasion to have cast Noah London who is a pupil at Oldershaw Academy in Wallasey, the same school that he attended during the 1950s.

The play does contain some strong language.

She has a PhD in Creative Writing from Royal Holloway which she completed under the supervision of Andrew Motion, and she's been a writer in residence at Gladstone's Library in Wales. Her travel writing about the Philippines earned her a Shiva Naipaul Memorial Prize, her debut novel was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and her second, The Essex Serpent was named Waterstones Book of the Year. As well as discussing her writing and her life, Sarah shares some her favourite classical music by composers including Schubert, Thea Musgrave and Alma Mahler.

Sarah's featured artist is the English violinist Tasmin Little. After studying at the Yehudi Menuhin School and reaching the final of BBC Young Musician of the Year, Tasmin made her professional debut with the Hallé. Since then she's been a major exponent of British music, recording concertos by Ernest Moeran, Frederick Delius and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending has become something of a signature piece. As well as featuring Tasmin's interpretations of British music, Sarah's chosen a sonata by Schubert, Arvo Pärt's Fratres and a recent work by Roxanna Panufnik, written especially for Tasmin.

Throughout the 1500s, the northern Italian city of Ferrara was one of Europe's political and cultural powerhouses: ducal seat of the celebrated d'Este family, and home for a time to perhaps the Renaissance's most notorious femme fatale: Lucrezia Borgia. Yet it also had a thriving musical culture - one founded upon the unique talents of a set of quite extraordinary women, who honed their musical gifts in almost total secrecy in convents and at secret concerts held in a tiny room within Ferrara's vast Castello. These women had a huge influence on Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and other luminaries of the early Baroque - yet when the Duchy of Ferrara fell in 1597 they faded into legend. This week, Composer of the Week puts that right. Recorded in studio and on location in modern-day Ferrara, Donald Macleod is joined by Renaissance musical scholar Laurie Stras to explore more than a century of female musical genius.

Donald and Laurie begin the week with a selection of gems from Ferrara's golden age - and hints of the dramatic story to come - before taking us right back to the mid-15th century and the first key figure in our story: composer, poet and mystic St Catherine of Bologna. Famed as a composer, poet, singer and violinist, musicians and poets from around Europe would come to the doors of the convent of Corpus Domini in Ferrara for an audience with Catherine, who - according to legend -would play for days at a time, and move between song and speech, music and chant.

Tuesday - Sarah Walker with Sarah Perry

9am
Sarah sets the tone and mood of the day's programme with a range of music to intrigue, surprise and entertain.

9.30am
Take part in our daily musical challenge. Two pieces of music are played together. Can you identify them?

10am
Sarah's guest in the week of International Women's Day is the author, academic and journalist Sarah Perry. Sarah was born into a deeply religious household and spent her early life immersed in classical music, classic literature and the King James Bible. As well as discussing her writing and her life, Sarah shares some her favourite classical music.

10.30am
Music in Time: Romantic
Today Sarah examines why Mily Balakirev's work, Islamey (Oriental Fantasy), is considered one of the most difficult solo piano pieces in the standard repertoire.

Double Take
Sarah explores the nature of performance by highlighting the differences in style between two versions of Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry 'Danny Boy', one for piano and the other for orchestra.

11am
Artist of the Week: Tasmin Little
Sarah's featured artist is the English violinist Tasmin Little.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b08h0k92)
The Women of Renaissance Ferrara, Lucrezia Borgia, Tromboncino and de Rore

Donald Macleod and Laurie Stras explore the musical legacy of Lucrezia Borgia and her favourite composer (and murderer), Bartolomeo Tromboncino, the "Little Trombone".

These women had a huge influence on Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and other luminaries of the early Baroque - yet when the Duchy of Ferrara fell in 1597, they faded into legend. This week, Composer of the Week puts that right. Recorded in studio and on location in modern-day Ferrara, Donald Macleod is joined by Renaissance musical scholar Laurie Stras to explore more than a century of female musical genius.

At the 16th century dawned, Ferrara welcomed the most notorious woman in Renaissance Italy to its magnificent Castello: Lucrezia Borgia, new wife of Duke Alfonso I. Their daughter, Leonora d'Este - composer, singer, and nun - was to prove one of the most remarkable and influential musical figures of the 1500s. But for now, the court of Ferrara rang with the frottole, or popular songs, of Bartolomeo Tromboncino - a composer who had fled his home city of Mantua after murdering his unfaithful wife. Donald Macleod explores how the frottola was hugely influential in the development of the madrigal - the most celebrated secular vocal form of the age - and explores the legacy of a giant of the Ferrarese Renaissance, the Flemish composer Cipriano de Rore, and his murky relationship with the notorious Protestant duchess, Renée of France.

BBC Philharmonic
Rafael Payare (conductor)

Charismatic Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare makes his debut with the BBC Philharmonic in two iconic works which mark the dawn of the twentieth century. Verklärte Nacht, Schoenberg's early string sextet which he later arranged for full string orchestra, takes as its inspiration Dehmel's powerful and poignant poem of the same name. It is one of Schoenberg's most accessible works; nevertheless, it caused consternation at its first performance in 1899. Schoenberg's harmonic world, even before his steps into twelve-note composition, baffled and incensed many, and others took offence at the liberal subject matter. Mahler's epic Fifth Symphony with its famous Adagietto was written just afterwards, during the summers of 1901 and 1902, around the time he met and married Alma Schindler. Like Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, this music takes us from sorrow to redemption, mourning to triumph.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b08h0k94)
The Women of Renaissance Ferrara, Leonora d'Este and Raffaella Aleotti

Revealed for the first time in 500 years: the enigmatic genius of two pioneering women composers of Renaissance Ferrara: Leonora d'Este and Raffaella Aleotti.

As BBC Radio 3 celebrates International Women's Day, we feature the story of two extraordinary female composing pioneers - both of whose legacy is shrouded in mystery. Suor Leonora d'Este was the daughter of the infamous Lucrezia Borgia, a nun, a singer and - it's believed - the composer of one of the most mysterious books of motets of the mid-16th century. Donald Macleod's guest, Renaissance music scholar Laurie Stras, explains why she thinks this ostensibly anonymous text came from Leonora's hand: making her the first published woman composer in Western musical history. Meanwhile, in contemporary Ferrara, Donald explores the enigma of Vittoria and Raffaella Aleotti, two sisters - one a published composer of madrigals, the other a convent-dwelling composer of motets. Or were they in fact the same person?

The Women of Renaissance Ferrara, Giaches de Wert and the First Concerto

After a devastating earthquake nearly destroys Ferrara in 1570, from the rubble is born an extraordinary ensemble of virtuoso female musicians.

Barely a decade into the rule of Duke Alfonso II, the man who turned Ferrara into a cultural and political powerhouse, tragedy struck the city in 1570 as it was hit by a devastating earthquake. Alfonso's accession had already resulted in the flowering of female singing at the court, but now, forced to entertain visiting royalty on the most threadbare of resources, the Duke commanded his finest female musicians to form an ensemble of their own - dazzling guests with their brilliant, shimmering vocal harmonies. This first generation of singing ladies was to gain a pan-European reputation, and set the scene for the fabled "concerto delle donne" - highly-secretive concerts at which noblemen would be treated to an utterly unique, and mesmerising, musical performance. Donald Macleod explores the genesis of the ensemble with Renaissance music scholar Laurie Stras, concentrating today on the music of one of the age's most gifted composers: Giaches de Wert.

Thursday Opera Matinee, Ethel Smyth - The Boatswain's Mate

Katie Derham introduces this week's Thursday Opera Matinée: Ethel Smyth's comic opera The Boatswain's Mate, one of six she wrote between the 1890s and 1920s.
Smyth's previous opera The Wreckers was very much in touch with the Late Romantic musical world of Germany; the music in The Boatswain's Mate is by contrast more simple and folk-like, with some wonderfully lyrical and melodious music. The story, setting Smyth's own libretto, focuses on three main characters - a strong widow, Mrs Waters, her unwanted suitor the retired boatswain Harry Benn, and his accomplice Ned Travers.
Katie Derham introduces the first complete recording of this opera, conducted by Odaline de la Martinez.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales - Zemlinsky, Mendelssohn, Kate Whitley

Recorded yesterday at BBC Hoddinott Hall, Cardiff

Presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas

Principal Guest Conductor Xian Zhang conducts her orchestra and chorus in a programme for International Women's Day. Radio 3 commissioned Kate Whitley to set the text by Malala Yousafzai, the schoolgirl who hit the headlines when she survived a murder attempt by the Taliban in 2012. Speak Out declaims every girl's right to an education in the struggle against oppression, sung by both adult and children's voices. Latvian sisters Baiba and Lauma Skride join forces harmoniously in Mendelssohn's concerto for piano and violin, and Zemlinsky sets Hans Christian Andersen's tale of The Little Mermaid, whose beauty entrances her handsome prince with tragic consequences. Zemlinsky's music powerfully explores the adult themes of this story, written in the wake of his own betrayal in love by Alma Schindler, who left him for Gustav Mahler.

Friday - Sarah Walker with Sarah Perry

9am
Sarah sets the tone and mood of the day's programme with a range of music to intrigue, surprise and entertain.

9.30am
Take part in today's musical challenge: can you work out which two composers are associated with a particular piece?

10am
Sarah's guest in the week of International Women's Day is the author, academic and journalist Sarah Perry. Sarah was born into a deeply religious household and spent her early life immersed in classical music, classic literature and the King James Bible. As well as discussing her writing and her life, Sarah shares some her favourite classical music.

10.30am
Music in Time: Modern
Today Sarah's in the Modern period exploring how Sibelius forged a new symphonic form and reclaimed the power of tonality in his compressed, single-movement 7th Symphony.

11am
Artist of the Week: Tasmin Little
Sarah's featured artist is the English violinist Tasmin Little.

The Women of Renaissance Ferrara, Dangerous Graces - Luzzaschi and the Fall of Ferrara

As Europe's nobility scramble for an audience with the secretive singing ladies of Ferrara, the Duchy meets a shockingly abrupt end. The fate of its musical legacy lies in the hand of just one man...

By the late 1500s, the secret concerts of Alfonso II were the hottest ticket in Europe, with composers, poets and noblemen flocking to Ferrara to hear the legendary vocal virtuosity of its stars Anna Guarini, Laura Peverara and Livia d'Arco. Yet only the most privileged would be granted an audience in the tiny salon, deep in the Castello, where the women would sing and play under the supervision of their music director, Luzzasco Luzzaschi. Yet, just as it was at the peak of its cultural power, the Duchy of Ferrara abruptly fell, Anna Guarini was brutally murdered, and the secrets of an extraordinary century of female music-making were left in jeopardy...

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - by Butterworth, MacMillan, Elgar

Live from Perth Concert Hall

Presented by Jamie MacDougall

Richard Farnes and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra perform Elgar's 2nd Symphony and are joined by Lawrence Power for James MacMillan's Viola Concerto.

Butterworth: A Shropshire Lad:
James MacMillan: Viola Concerto

8.05 Interval

Elgar: Symphony No. 2 in E flat

James MacMillan wrote his viola concerto for tonight's soloist Lawrence Power, and it explores all the expressive range of the instrument: from the tranquil and hymn-like, to the passionately melodic and ultimately joyful.
On either side of this 21st century work sits British music from the early 20th century: Butterworth's A E Housman inspired rhapsody, 'A Shropshire Lad'; and the concert culminates with Elgar's 2nd Symphony. First performed in 1911, and dedicated to King Edward VII, the symphony is nevertheless a deeply personal essay and for many a quintessential expression of the romantic English pastoral.
