Shostakovich's The Nose

Andrew McGregor presents a rare production of Shostakovich's early surreal opera, The Nose, from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Based on Gogol's short story, the plot concerns Russian civil servant Kovalov, who loses his nose and desperately tries to retrieve it as it goes on the rampage around St Petersburg in the uniform of a higher-ranking official. On the way, Kovalov meets a cast of peculiar characters in a work which is a mixture of social satire, comedy and intimate reflection. Martin Winkler sings the hapless Kovalov and John Tomlinson takes on three characters, all of whom make life harder for him. Plus director Barry Kosky talks about his colourful new production and Ingo Metzmacher discusses Shostakovich's wildly inventive score.

There are other pieces for voices by Haydn, Bob Chilcott and Rachmaninov, and it's another amateur choir's turn to introduce themselves in 'Meet my Choir'.

Breaking Free: Tom Service on the Second Viennese School

Breaking Free - the minds that changed music. Tom Service explores how to listen to the Second Viennese School - music that exploded with expressive feeling in the early years of the 20th century, and then gradually rebuilt harmony into a new system, using the 12-note series. He explains how the music developed from Arnold Schoenberg's early expressionist ventures into atonality, to the cool jewel-like precision of his pupil Anton Webern. In conversation with art historian Lisa Florman, he finds parallels in the painter Wassily Kandinsky's journey towards abstraction and his theories of shapes and colours. (Kandinsky was a friend of Schoenberg). And composer George Benjamin describes the intricate structures of Webern's music, which greatly inspired his own compositions.

Breaking Free: Freud versus Music

Did Freud really dislike music as much as he professed? Stephen Johnson explores Sigmund Freud's enigmatic relationship with music. He talks to the American cultural analyst Michelle Duncan, pscyho-analysts and writers Darian Leader and Julie Jaffee Nagel, the music critic David Nice, whose first job it was to take tours around the Freud Museum in Hampstead, and the Barcelona-based neurologist Josep Marco Pallares who is studying amusia and music-specific anhedonia, which he proposes might have been the root cause of Freud's problem with music. Plus extracts from Freud's writings read by the actor Nicholas Murchie.

Breaking Free: A Patriot for Me

2015 marks the 50th anniversary of John Osborne's sensational and ground-breaking epic play about Alfred Redl, "A Patriot for Me". Redl was an officer in the Austro-Hungarian intelligence service in the 1890s. His homosexuality made him a target for blackmail and persecution. Perhaps surprisingly, Osborne's play is not only a sweeping epic but also an angry plea for tolerance and a condemnation of hypocrisy that is as relevant now as it was to him in 1965.

The play has been credited with helping to bring an end to official censorship in the UK.

A Patriot for Me centres on an ambitious rising star in the army, in the decadent society of turn-of-the-century Austria, whose journey of self-discovery leads to blackmail, betrayal and murder. Redl is compromised by his newly realised sexual freedom and is compelled by the Russian army to spy on the country and countrymen he cares for.

THE HISTORY OF THE PLAY

Produced at the Royal Court with Maximilian Schell as Redl, the great famous set piece is an upper-class drag ball, which put the nail in the coffin of the play's licensing by the Lord Chamberlain, though it was a huge success when performed in a private members' club and revived brilliantly many years later at Chichester by Ronald Eyre, starring Alan Bates.

Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951), Breaking Free: The Inventor

Donald Macleod explores Schoenberg's life from five different viewpoints. Part of Radio 3's season: Breaking Free - the minds that changed music.

Today he celebrates Schoenberg's sheer inventiveness, including the development of the 12-tone compositional method.

Schoenberg, seen by many as the inventor of modern music, is perhaps best known as the creator of the twelve-tone method of composition. But it was an idea whose development he kept secret, until revealing it to his students in the 1920s. Donald traces the origins of the method which came to define the composer for many, from Schoenberg's early imitative work, through his exploration of the fullest possible romanticism, to the method's maturation during the 1930s.

On 11 October 1727, George II was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey. The House of Hanover's favourite composer was the natural choice to provide the music. The Academy of Ancient Music returns to the Proms to fill the Royal Albert Hall with all the regal splendour of Handel's Coronation Anthems and with Leopold Stokowski's equally grandiose upholstering of music by Bach and Purcell.

Schoenberg's family life did not always run smoothly. His first wife ran off with the painter Schoenberg had engaged to teach them both, with tragic consequences. His relationship with his eldest son was never warm, Schoenberg's parenting style being old-fashioned to say the least. His second marriage however was a happy one, and the basis of a second family in America. Donald looks at Schoenberg's family life and relationships.

Memory

'Memories,' according to PG Wodehouse 'are like mulligatawny soup in a cheap restaurant. It is best not to stir them.'

In this memory-themed edition of Words and Music Tom Hiddleston and Eleanor Bron nonetheless poke around with the soup spoon to discover what's below the surface.

Among the ingredients Wordsworth and Bertie Wooster are in remarkable agreement; Alan Bennett struggles to comes to terms with his mother's dementia; and Fanny Burney recalls her horrific operation. St Peter and Montaigne have trouble remembering; Ted Hughes remembers all too well his honeymoon with Sylvia Plath; William Blake and Elizabeth Jennings look back on happier days. Somewhere in the middle is a large dollop of Proust.

It's all to be found floating in the music of Purcell, Conlon Nancarrow, Chabrier, John Adams, Brahms and Bach.

Tonight's all-Beethoven Prom culminates in the composer's most fascinating and bold symphony, a piece shaped by irresistible rhythmic drive, whether in the inevitable tread of its slow march or the propulsive energy of its outer movements.
One of the world's oldest orchestras, along with one of its closest collaborators, lights the fuse on Beethoven's Seventh and his excitable Leonore Overture No. 2, while 'pianist's pianist' Sir András Schiff performs the composer's most commanding piano concerto.

Baldur Brönnimann, conductor

The Ensemble Intercontemporain commemorates the late Pierre Boulez - composer, conductor, polemicist and founder of the ensemble - with a programme of pieces he conducted during more than 40 years of appearances at the Proms. His Anthèmes 2, for violin and electronics, contrasts with the exuberant vocal setting of avian poetry by EE Cummings, performed by the BBC Singers.
Around these come Bartók's earthy Village Scenes and Elliott Carter's Penthode - written for tonight's ensemble - a slow movement of geological power that has been compared to the steady glide of tectonic plates.

Death laid its hand on Anton Bruckner as he laboured over the incomplete last movement of his final symphony. But as life was leaving Bruckner, vision and faith were only strengthening in him. Even in its incompleteness, Bruckner's Ninth carries with it an inspiring optimism in the face of death. 'Art had its beginning in God,' believed Bruckner, 'and so it must lead back to God.' Appropriate sentiments given that it is preceded by Bach's cantata of resignation and acceptance 'Ich habe genug' from the thrilling bass-baritone of Christian Gerhaher.

He is former Chief Conductor for the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and this year conducted two BBC Proms (Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, and Mahler and Mozart).

Outside of tracks chosen by Volkov to play, the show features music from Kojey Radical, Jemeel Moondoc, and Charles Mingus with Joni Mitchell.

Donald Macleod explores Schoenberg's life from five different viewpoints. Part of Radio 3's season: Breaking Free - the minds that changed music. Today the composer's moves between Germany and Austria - and further afield.

Schoenberg never really knew where to call home. In Europe he had moved frequently between Vienna and Berlin as well as further afield, and the developing political situation in pre-war Germany and Austria made permanency impossible for him. From the thirties he lived in the states - but this was an exile rather than a homecoming. Donald explores the composer's relationship with the places he lived.

Schoenberg was sincere about faith and belief throughout his life, though not always with consistency. Superstition governed his daily life, in particular a horror of the number thirteen, whilst in religion he first converted from Judaism to Protestantism and later back again, not least because of the impact of the persecution of Jews. Towards the end of his life, he wrote several Jewish works celebrating the establishment of the state of Israel.

Brett Dean: Komarvo's Fall
Szymanowski: Symphony No 4 (Sinfonia Concertante)

8.15: Interval

8.35: Rachmaninov: Symphony No 2

Tamara Stefanovich, piano
John Wilson, conductor

The NYO's Winter journey begins in the chilly isolation of outer space, lands in the middle of a lively Polish party and ends in the radiant warmth of a show-stopping Russian symphony.

Brett Dean's Komarov's Fall begins with sparse, icy strings and woodwind glistening in the silence of space. As the tragic drama unfolds, jagged percussion and urgent brass take over the story of the Russian cosmonaut who became a hapless victim of the ruthless 1960s space race.

The finale of the evening is Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2, the ultimate Russian Romantic symphony. With big, bold melodies and lush, glowing harmonies, this music will blaze in a performance of irresistible sparkle and flamboyance by this orchestra of young musicians.

Landmark: Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities

As part of BBC Radio 3's Music on the Brink season Margaret Drabble and William Boyd take part in a Landmark discussion about Robert Musil's The Man without Qualities.

You can download this programme by searching under Arts and Ideas podcasts for the broadcast date.

Joining Matthew Sweet for a Landmark discussion about the book, its author and the historical landscape are the writers Margaret Drabble and William Boyd, the cultural historian Philipp Blom, German literature expert Andrew Webber and the actor, Peter Marinker.

One of the acknowledged masterpieces of European fiction - it has been compared to Ford Madox Ford's Parade's End, Proust's In Search of Lost Time and Joyce's Ulysses. Left unfinished by the Austrian author at his death in 1942, The Man Without Qualities is one of the first comprehensive accounts of a truly modern sensibility and examines a world perched on the brink of catastrophe - about to fall headlong into the turmoil and anguish of the Great War.

Producer: Zahid Warley.
