Music for a Large Ensemble

Multi-Story Orchestra
Christopher Stark, conductor

The Proms steps out of the Royal Albert Hall and into a municipal car park in Peckham to salute the man who reconnected art music to urban culture in all its drive, repetition and asymmetry.
South London favourites Christopher Stark and the Multi-Story Orchestra make their Proms debut in an all-Reich performance on their home ground.

SAT 16:00 Sound of Cinema (b07rkv02)
The Modern Prometheus

200 years ago this year, a group of English literati, holidaying in Switzerland, which included the poet Lord Byron and his physician Dr John Polidori, Mary Shelley, her step-sister Claire Clairemont, and her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, decided to pass the summer evenings entertaining each other with the telling of supernatural stories. The seeds were sown for one of the most enduring of all horror tales - Frankenstein.
Matthew Sweet introduces a selection of film music inspired by the Frankenstein story in the week of the release of Luke Scott's debut feature "Morgan". The programme highlights music from the Universal Studios series of films from the '30s and '40s; from the Hammer Collection of the '60s and '70s; and from some of the more recent cinematic incarnations of the story.

Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D major
Berlin Philharmonic
Sir Simon Rattle conductor

Overlooking a lake in the Austrian resort of Pörtschach, Johannes Brahms created a symphony that captured all he saw: the beauty of the sunset; the stillness of the night; the peaceful awakening to a new day. And yet its musicians were to play, said Brahms, as if 'with a mourning ribbon around their arm'.
Brahms's meeting of glowing melancholy and piercing brightness is the culmination of the Berlin Philharmonic's second Prom under Sir Simon Rattle, following Dvorák's colourful Slavonic Dances and a new work from Julian Anderson.

Jonathan Swain features young pianist Daniil Trifonov playing Liszt's Sonata in B minor, prior to his Proms appearance this week, and previews a week of Bruckner symphonies at the Proms with the composer's lesser-known Abendzauber. He also looks at music of Latin America from the baroque era to the present, by way of interpretations of traditional pieces from Bolivia, Uruguay and Mexico. There's also music from Copland, Ives and Reich, including Copland's Clarinet Concerto, played by Andreas Ottensamer.

Jancis Robinson

In her forty-year career writing and broadcasting about wine, Jancis Robinson has probably done more than anyone else to make wine an accessible and joyous part of our lives, and to strip away a great deal of the pretensions that used to surround it. But she's also one of our leading scholars of wine, and the fourth edition of the book she describes as her 'fourth child', a mammoth updating of her nearly 1000-page-long Oxford Companion to Wine, is about to be published next month. She talks to Michael Berkeley about her love of opera, the excitement of tasting for the Queen, and the great pleasures of wine and music. Her choices include music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Handel and a sweet English folk song. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3

La Valse

The incomparable Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra makes a return following its second appearance at the Proms back in 2011.
As part of our celebration this year of South American music and musicians, we hear the performance of Venezuelan composer Paul Desenne's Hipnosis mariposa and Heitor Villa-Lobos's orchestral tribute to J. S. Bach.
This most thrusting of orchestras ends with Ravel's dizzying parody of a fin de siècle waltz, La Valse. A Proms hot ticket if ever there was one.

PROMS INTERVAL: Lucky - by Julianne Pachico
Julianne Pachico is a new and exciting literary talent from South America. Her short story is set in 2003 against the backdrop of Colombia's guerrilla war. Teenaged Stephanie is delighted when she persuades her mother to let her stay at home while the rest of the family head off for a weekend away. Her delight in escaping her mother's constant gaze soon turns to disquiet when something unexpected happens.

Julianne Pachico's short story accompanies this year's celebration of South American music when the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra performs at the Proms.

Vocal athleticism, vivid storytelling and Classical poise combine in Rossini's rarely heard opera, performed in concert.

The Physicists

Samantha Bond stars as a psychiatrist in this classic European farce by Friedrich Dürrenmatt about three theoretical physicists who believe they are Einstein, Newton and Möbius. They are locked in a lunatic asylum and each gets tangled in vicious murders. Amidst all the jokes is a real relationship between a scientist who may or may not be mad and his nurse who wants to save him. The Physicists was first performed in 1962 at the height of the Cold War.

The serious subject behind the farce is what to do with the knowledge of weapons of mass destruction once let out of the genie's bottle. Who controls that knowledge? Can scientists remain free, even in the free world?

The music soundtrack is from Bernard Herrmann's less well known score to Fahrenheit 451.

9am
My favourite... Gypsy-style showpieces
Gypsy music has inspired generations of composers to write some of their fieriest and most appealing lighter, and sometimes not-so-light, music. Rob's selection ranges from authentic gypsy tunes played by the great Romanian violinist Grigoras Dinucu (and an Enescu Rhapsody that was inspired by them) to Brahms Zigeunerlieder and Strauss's effervescent Gypsy Baron overture.

9.30am
Take part in today's musical challenge: which location is being depicted in this piece of music?

10am
Rob's guest is the celebrated actress Samantha Bond, one of our most versatile actresses. Born into an acting family, her great uncle was a music hall performer and her father was in The Onedin Line, Samantha is famous for her appearances as Lady Rosalind Painswick in the worldwide hit Downton Abbey and the role of Auntie Angela in the comedy series Outnumbered. Her notable stage and screen appearances also include Juliet in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with Kenneth Branagh, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Robert Lindsay, and Miss Moneypenny to Pierce Brosnan's James Bond. Through the week, Samantha shares her favourite pieces of classical music with Rob.

10:30am
Music in Time: Classical
Rob places Music in Time. He focuses on the fashion during the Classical period for mechanical curiosities: automata such as musical clocks, and a strange instrument invented by Benjamin Franklin and featured by Mozart in his Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Cello - and Glass Harmonica.

11am
Artist of the Week: Staatskapelle Dresden
The Staatskapelle Dresden visits the Proms this week with Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann. With a roll-call of past directors that has included Schütz, Weber and Wagner, the orchestra is one of Europe's musical glories, its sound warm yet transparent, full-bodied and dynamic. Rob chooses a diverse and distinctive roster of recordings from Vittorio Negri in Vivaldi to Herbert Blomstedt in Beethoven and Otmar Suitner in Tchaikovsky.

Giuseppe Verdi was a leading figure in 19th-century Italian opera. But his impact on the cultural and political landscape of the country went much deeper. This week Donald Macleod investigates how Verdi achieved an iconic status which still holds good to this day, beginning with three operas which formed turning points in his career - the first established his international reputation, the second broke new ground with an operatic adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish play, and finally, the work which, alongside Rigoletto and Il trovatore, represents a high-water mark in Italian operatic history.

Carolyn Sampson (soprano)
Iestyn Davies (countertenor)

Two cherished British singers round off 2016's Proms Chamber Music series with a joint recital at Cadogan Hall, celebrating English song with an extended stopover in Germany for songs and duets by Felix Mendelssohn.

Either side, Carolyn Sampson, Iestyn Davies and Joseph Middleton present Benjamin Britten's touching 'realisations' of songs by the composer's theatrical predecessor Henry Purcell, and works by the doyen of English song, Roger Quilter.

Piers Hellawell: Wild Flow (BBC commission: world premiere)
Haydn: Cello Concerto No 1 in C major
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 5 in E minor

Narek Hakhnazaryan, cello
Ulster Orchestra
Rafael Payare, conductor

In the late 1880s Tchaikovsky felt momentarily freed from the catastrophes that were haunting his private life and carving a tragic path through his career. His Fifth Symphony, which was taking shape on his desk, appears to ease the composer's own suffering. Light floods its textures; hopeful melodies invade its dark corners.
Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare makes his Proms debut with his Ulster Orchestra to perform this most radiant of Tchaikovsky's symphonies, bringing with him Haydn's delightfully perky C major Cello Concerto and a brand-new work by Piers Hellawell.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E flat major (Romantic)

Staatskapelle Berlin
Daniel Barenboim (piano and director)

Daniel Barenboim and his Staatskapelle Berlin open three consecutive evenings in which a Mozart piano concerto is paired with a Bruckner symphony. 'We shall never be able to do anything like that,' proclaimed Beethoven when he heard Mozart's dramatic, minor-key Piano Concerto No. 24.
As with Mozart in his concertos, with each of Bruckner's symphonies came a keener focus of vision and honing of craft. With the Fourth, Bruckner really came of age, bringing a newfound confidence in the glowing first movement, while its statuesque Andante is a moving premonition of loss.

My favourite... Gypsy-style showpieces
Gypsy music has inspired generations of composers to write some of their fieriest and most appealing lighter, and sometimes not-so-light, music. TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b01f680z)
Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), 'Viva Verdi!'

Donald Macleod investigates the challenges facing Verdi, while Italy was under Austrian rule, as he tried to cope with the strict censorship applied to operas such as Rigoletto and Un ballo in maschera, and the role played by Nabucco and La battaglia di Legnano in the movement for the unification of Italy. In the turbulent years of the 19th century, when Italy was struggling to gain independence from its Austrian rulers, Verdi's patriotic choruses seemed to embody the spirit of the movement for the unification of Italy, and an entire mythology has grown up around Verdi as hero of the Risorgimento. Donald Macleod investigates the role Verdi's music was thought to have played in Italy's fight for freedom, and the challenges he faced in his own battle with the Austrian censors.

Bruckner: Symphony No 6 in A major

Staatskapelle Berlin
Daniel Barenboim (piano and director)

Bruckner, but not as we know him. In the Sixth Symphony, gone is the composer's typical heft, his long-drawn crescendos and his archetypal brooding introduction. Instead, this symphony gallops into life, crackling with vitality. Bruckner's rich and individual Sixth Symphony is heard in the second of the Staatskapelle Berlin's two Proms after a piano concerto by Mozart that boasts similar rarity and individuality.
Mozart's sparkling Piano Concerto No. 26 was performed by the composer in Frankfurt during festivities in 1790 for the coronation of Leopold II as Holy Roman Emperor; tonight Daniel Barenboim gives its first Proms performance for over 40 years.

TUE 22:00 Sunday Feature (b06fld1w)
How Celtic Are We?

Cultural historian Dai Smith interrogates the Celtic myth.

For generations, Celtic identity on the British isles has been about 'not being English.' It's an interpretation you can see written out in Rugby internationals, jewellery design, music and poetry which has also underpinned devolved politics and regional radicalism.

Dai Smith takes the meaning of the terms 'Celt' and 'Celtic' in the twenty-first century and searches for a Celtic DNA and for Celtic language, as well as the shared history that holds the six Celtic nations together. At a time when many are questioning those facets which hold the identities of the UK together, he also asks if the use of the term Celtic to mean passionate, hot blooded, or romantic is not just a harmless inaccuracy, but a dangerous myth that is preventing a more mature and evidence based analysis of identity around the fringes of the British Isles.

First broadcast in October 2015.

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b05qfqfr)
British Film Comedians, Tony Hancock

A further chance to hear the columnist and historian Simon Heffer with his 2015 Essays on much-loved comic actors of mid-20th century British film.

4 of 5: Tony Hancock.

Tragedy and comedy have often shared the billing in Simon Heffer's series on British comic actors in mid-20th century film, but never more so than in the case of Tony Hancock.

Hancock is warmy recalled for his embodiment on radio and television of a self-deluded failure, a man whose life has been an odyssey of constant frustration. His role in film was less succesful and Simon Heffer examines the reasons why.

After critics noted the contributions of both his gifted screenwriters, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and of his main sidekick, Sid James, Hancock refused to work with them. Then he fired his agent.

Simon Heffer considers the strengths but also the weaknesses of his two largely forgotten films - The Rebel and The Punch and Judy Man - and the sad demise of a brilliant performer whose influences are still apparent today.

Producer : Beaty Rubens.

On the day Staatskapelle Dresden arrives at the Proms, Rob travels back to the early years of this venerable orchestra, with music by one of its first directors: Heinrich Schütz. His third volume of Symphoniae Sacrae was published in Dresden in 1650, at the end of the Thirty Years' War, and Schütz celebrated in grand style with works such as his magnificent "Nun Danket alle Gott".

Christian Thielemann (conductor)

In the first of two Proms in which Christian Thielemann displays his credentials as an interpreter of the Austro-German repertoire, he focuses on Bruckner's Third Symphony, the composer's symphonic monument to his idol Wagner - a monolithic memorial that feels at the same time intimate and personal.

Before that, one of the most sought-after of today's pianists, Daniil Trifonov, is the soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 - whose ebullient finale contrasts with the seraphic slow movement made famous by the 1967 film Elvira Madigan.

WED 22:00 Sunday Feature (b06qjknt)
An Imagined Glasgow

"Glasgow is a magnificent city. Why do we hardly ever notice that?" asks a character in Alasdair Gray's Lanark. "Because nobody imagines living there," replies another. "Think of Florence, Paris, London, New York. Nobody visiting them for the first time is a stranger because he's already visited them in paintings, novels, history books and films, but if a city hasn't been used by an artist, not even the inhabitants live there imaginatively."

When writer Louise Welsh arrived in Glasgow in 1985 the former work horse of the Empire seemed to have turned its back on the River Clyde. Prospects were bleak, but there was a buzz of creativity in the city.

Since 1996 - the year Douglas Gordon collected the Turner Prize- seventeen artists from Glasgow have been nominated for the award. Ever since Glasgow has been heralded as a creative anomaly: how could a working class industrial city, with little in the way of arts infrastructure, produce such interesting conceptual artists? Or so the thinking went.

"There are the myths and there's what actually happened," says Francis McKee, director of the Centre for Contemporary Arts.

Louise Welsh explores myths and miracles, taking to the streets and meeting artists along in the way, including the eventual winners of the 2015 Turner Prize, Assemble.

Producer: Caitlin Smith
First broadcast in November 2015.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b05qfqft)
British Film Comedians, Sid James

In the final programme celebrating comic actors from mid-20th century British film, Simon Heffer turns his gaze on a man whose priapic laugh alone merits an entire radio series. Sid James was at the heart of the phenomenally successful Carry On films and one of the best-loved and most easily recognised comic actors of his day.

Throughout the 1950s and '60s, the many roles he played were all, in essence, the same. As Simon Heffer puts it: "To say Sid had range as an actor would be to do him an injustice. Sid not have range. Sid was Sid. And it was as well he was, because the audience expected Sid in the full pomp of his Sidness, and would have been crushed with disappointment by anything else."

But Sid was not, by birth, the wise-cracking Cockney geezer whom he came to embody. He traced his roots back to Johannesburg, where he started life as Solomon Joel Cohen and began his working life as a gentlemen's hairdresser.

Simon Heffer traces his journey from a few years in rep to bit-parts in British comic films, his years of triumph in the Carry On films and his dramatic and unpredictable death on stage in 1976 - a somehow fitting end to a series on comic actors in their lives and on film.

Producer: Beaty Rubens.

WED 23:00 Late Junction (b07sxtw7)
Late Junction Sessions, Anna & Elizabeth, Asiq Nargile and the Alash Ensemble in Session

Three disparate folk traditions combine in this exclusive Late Junction collaboration session, recorded in the music rooms of Craxton Studios, a turn-of-the-century house in north-west London.

Duo Anna & Elizabeth play Banjo, fiddle and guitar and draw their inspiration from the mountain music of Appalachia, vocalist and saz virtuoso Asiq Nargile is from the Asiq tradition in Georgia while Bady-Dorzhu Ondar from the Alash Ensemble is a master of harmonic Tuvan throat singing, a technique from the southern fringes of Siberia that allows each singer to produce multiple pitches simultaneously. Over the course of a day in the oak panelled rooms of Craxton studios the musicians worked on several pieces including a percussive tap performance from Anna Roberts-Gevalt and a harmonic Tuvan vocal piece from Bady-Dorzhu Ondar.

Also on the programme an exclusive recording of a new piece by British pianist Kate Halsall, Adam Rudolph's Go: Organic Guitar Orchestra, featuring 11 of New York City's guitarists and brooding improv from Austrian group Polwechsel.

My favourite... Gypsy-style showpieces
Gypsy music has inspired generations of composers to write some of their fieriest and most appealing lighter, and sometimes not-so-light, music. Rob's selection ranges from authentic gypsy tunes played by the great Romanian violinist Grigoras Dinicu (and an Enescu Rhapsody that was inspired by them) to Brahms Zigeunerlieder and Strauss's effervescent Gypsy Baron overture.

9.30am
Take part in today's musical challenge: identify a piece of music played backwards.

10.30am
Music in Time: Modern
Rob places Music in Time. Stravinsky's "The Firebird" was his first ballet score, and his first collaboration with Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. Stravinsky used elements of folk music and dazzling orchestration to conjure up a Russian fairy-tale world. The huge success of the premiere in 1910 brought him worldwide fame, and soon afterwards he produced a version of the ballet that could be performed in concert - the Firebird Suite.

Richard Egarr conductor

On 11 October 1727, George II was crowned King of England at Westminster Abbey. The House of Hanover's favourite composer was the natural choice to provide the music. Handel wrote four majestic Coronation Anthems for the occasion, the most famous, Zadok the Priest, designed to unleash its blazing choral entry just as George stepped into the Abbey's chancel.
The Academy of Ancient Music returns to the Proms to fill the Royal Albert Hall with all the regal splendour of Handel's Coronation Anthems and with Leopold Stokowski's equally grandiose upholstering of music by Bach and Purcell.

Music in Time: Renaissance
Rob places Music in Time. He selects English madrigals from "The Triumphs of Oriana", a collection compiled by Thomas Morley in 1601 and said to be in honour of Queen Elizabeth. The 25 madrigals encompass a wide range of composers, but all end with the same refrain: "Then sang the shepherds and nymphs of Diana: Long live fair Oriana".

Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), Verdi and Shakespeare

After Aida was performed in 1871, there was a gap of sixteen years before Verdi's penultimate opera found its way to the stage. He'd been lured back by the temptation of a new Shakespearean work - Otello. It forms the culmination of this Prom in which the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its Russian Chief Conductor perform Shostakovich's disquieting First Cello Concerto.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b05302mx)
Fear Itself, Matthew Sweet

Fear is one of the six basic universal emotions (the others are anger, disgust, happiness, sadness and surprise) and like all human emotions not easy to understand. Fear can be played upon, enjoyed, conquered. It is an obstacle to progress ("the only thing to fear is fear itself") and, as we stand at the kerb, it saves our lives every day. This series of The Essay brings you five essays on different aspects of fear.

Tonight writer and broadcaster Matthew Sweet uncovers the tragic history of The Little Albert Experiment, conducted by John B Watson, a 1920s psychologist who conditioned a toddler to recoil from a white rat and, eventually, any white fluffy object.

Producer Laura Thomas.
