SAT 09:00 Record Review (b06xwcdl)
Building a Library: Debussy's Nocturnes

with Andrew McGregor

0930
Julian Johnson recommends a recording of Debussy's Nocturnes. Inspired by the way painters including Turner, Whistler and his French impressionist contemporaries dealt with light, Debussy used an orchestral palette to evoke the slowly changing movement of clouds, a riotous festival, and a silvered moonlit seascape. The music, at once brilliantly orchestrated and subtle, is a demanding test which separates the sheep from the goats among orchestras, conductors and recording engineers.

1030
Hilary Finch reviews an clutch of recent song recordings.

Nicholas Brittell's work with Hans Zimmer on the score for "12 Years A Slave" won him great praise, since which he went on to score Natalie Portman's directorial debut film, "A Tale of Love and Darkness".

The programme includes music from "Cabaret"; "The Gold Diggers of 1933"; "The Kid"; "The Great Gatsby"; "The Bicycle Thieves"; "Cinderella"; "Teorema"; "Elysium" and "The Bonfire of the Vanities". The Classic Score of the Week is Erich Korngold's music for "The Prince and the Pauper".

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b06xwckg)
From the Met

Wagner's Tannhauser

James Levine conducts Tannhäuser, Wagner's early masterpiece, in its first return to the Metropolitan Opera in more than a decade. One of today's leading Wagnerian tenors, Johan Botha, takes on the title role of the young troubadour knight who is torn between spiritual love and carnal desire. Wagner's opulent score melds together the worlds of the sacred and profane.

Tannhauser, having been charmed by love goddess, Venus, comes to his senses and returns to his mortal love, the chaste heroine Elisabeth. However he sings of passionate rather than courtly love, which shocks her and her community. He promises to seek atonement and redemption, but the illicit attraction of Venus continues to beckon.

Presented live from the Metropolitan Opera, New York by Mary-Jo Heath with commentary by Ira Siff.

SAT 22:00 Hear and Now (b06xwckj)
BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

Presented by Tom Service.

Matthias Pintscher conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a concert recorded at Glasgow's City Halls.

Joan Magrané Figuera's ...secreta desolación... references Wagner's Parsifal, while another German musical revolutionary, Helmut Lachenmann, uses silences and large orchestral forces in Tableau, a work described as "mesmerising, startling and occasionally forbidding". Jay Schwartz's Delta combines "physics with the poetic and aesthetic dimensions of sound" and Salvatore Sciarrino's flute concerto, with soloist Matteo Cesari, offers a fragile soundworld on the edge of silence.

Plus, the latest of Hear and Now's series Modern Muses, features the composer Liza Lim and cellist Severine Ballon, and there's a chance to hear one of Liza Lim's most significant large scale works, The Compass, for solo flute, didgeridoo and orchestra.

Baaba Maal

As a prelude to the Folk Connections weekend on Radio 3, Michael Berkeley's guest is the world music singer and instrumentalist Baaba Maal. He performs at Glastonbury and Womad, and fills venues like the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall - no surprise there, as Baaba Maal is an international superstar, with 11 albums so far, fusing music from his African roots in Senegal with rock and pop, and collaborating with musicians like Brian Eno. What's surprising, though, is the electrifying effect he has on his audience in places like the Festival Hall - he gets them all up and out of their seats and dancing.

In Private Passions, Baaba Maal tells Michael Berkeley why he has a mission to get everybody on their feet, and how he wants to use his music to change minds and challenge political leaders. He remembers his childhood on the edge of the Sahara Desert, and the songs he learnt from his parents. And he reveals the shock - and excitement - of discovering classical music for the first time, and falling in love with Mozart and Beethoven. Other music choices include Fela Kuti, the Ensemble of Mali, and Miles Davis.

Perchance to Dream

Freud argued that dreams could be interpreted, and for many literary characters, such as Winston in 1984 and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina the dream is used as a device to reveal the character's true or subconscious feelings. Nightmares are also well represented, with chilling passages from Moby-Dick and Wuthering Heights. There are also aspirational dreams from real people such as Churchill and George Mallory, and literary figures; Jude the Obscure is desperate to escape his miserable life through learning, while Rebecca Sharp sees a rich husband as her salvation. Prophetic and opium-induced dreams also feature, alongside music by Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Stravinsky and Handel. Extracts are read by Sophie Thompson and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Producer - Ellie Mant.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b06xwpch)
Crossing the Border - Poetry and Film

Right from the birth of cinema, film-makers have experimented with poetry in film. Matthew Sweet explores this overlooked history.

The Russian pioneer film-maker Dziga Vertov developed his celebrated montage technique out of Mayakovsky's poetry and the GPO Film Unit's 'Night Mail' with W H Auden's closing poem owes a good deal to these Russian experimentalists. Starting at the unlikely site of the studio where scenes from 'Night Mail' were shot and recorded eighty years ago, Matthew establishes this iconic film as an important blueprint for poets and film-makers since.

In recent times, the poets Tony Harrison and Simon Armitage have both made documentary films where their poems replaced conventional commentaries. Matthew hosts a reunion between Tony Harrison and his collaborator, the film director Peter Symes, as they relive the powerful moment of filming of the exhumation of a body in a Neapolitan necropolis. This moment poses core questions about film poems: what does the viewer hear and see, how do word and image relate to each other? With Simon Armitage, Matthew learns how his poetry on film gives a voice to the marginalised. Now, a burgeoning movement of experimental film-makers are creating a new space for the production, curation and distribution of film poems in festivals and in digital media, so as the mainstream media fragment, film poetry is returning to its avant garde roots as was exemplified by early film poem makers such as Germaine Dulac and Maya Deren.

August 1914

A new adaptation for radio of Nobel Prize-winner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's epic story of the first battle of the Eastern Front in 1914 - which was a disaster for Russia. Solzhenitsyn's book was published in the West one year after he won the prize - with sections about Lenin omitted. It was only after his expulsion from the USSR that the complete book was available. This new production is narrated by Fiona Shaw.

In August 1914, Colonel Vorotyntsev advances into East Prussia in search of the elusive front line. As he encounters the truth about the German war-machine his military ideals rapidly tarnish and he must decide whether to volunteer his men for certain death or retreat. At the outbreak of the First World War, the Russian advance met with catastrophic results. Bungled orders, poor and insufficient supplies, out-dated equipment and tactics, and deliberate misinformation resulted in chaos and the near-annihiliation of the army at the hands of the Germans. Three years later the tsarist regime fell as Lenin led the October Revolution.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

Butcher Boy?

Donald Macleod explores the early years of Czech composer Antonin Dvorák, including his first symphony the Bells of Zlonice.

Dvorák has often been represented as an innocent, a naïve, a benign country boy, saintly figure, a family man, a train-spotter and pigeon-fancier who loved nothing more than chatting over a beer in a pub with his pals and playing Darda - a card-game now lost. But there's some evidence that the seemingly artless persona he presented to the world was carefully crafted. Much has been made of his humble origins, the eldest of nine children, growing up living the simple life of a deeply religious country community, surrounded by folk music.

Until quite recently, accounts of his life would have us believe that about the age of thirteen Dvorák was apprenticed to a butcher in Zlonice, a town about twenty miles from his home village, but he was able to continue taking music lessons with the local organist, and at fifteen, completing his apprenticeship. But recently his certificate that supposedly testified to this has been shown to be a forgery, the story a mere myth confected to obscure the fact that his parents recognised their son's musical talent from the first and did everything they could to encourage it.

Other People (Hell Is...)

Strangers

Acclaimed writer A L Kennedy muses on the hell that is other people, kicking off with strangers.

In Jean Paul Sartre's Play 'No Exit' one character declares, 'L'Enfer - c'est les autres' - hell is other people, and A L Kennedy has found herself very much behind this idea. As someone so unable to deal with other people that she works at home, making up imaginary friends, who even then don't always behave, she admits to not necessarily being the best person to dish out advice on relationships. However, in this series she wonders whether she's perhaps been a little harsh when it comes to 'other people'.

Today, she reveals why, despite being a solitary novelist with an existential fear of strangers, she has found herself hugging the odd one in the street.

Written and read by A L Kennedy, the award-winning novelist, dramatist and broadcaster.
Producer: Justine Willett.

Danish saxophonist Julie Kjær links up with renowned British improvisers John Edwards and Steve Noble for a performance that juxtaposes fragility with forceful groove. And a series of spontaneous collaborations, from topflight musicians who have never played together before, adds a further frisson of unpredictability.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

An Artist Too Has a Fatherland

Donald Macleod explores the life and work of Antonin Dvorák.

Dvorák's life coincides with an Age of Nationalism across Europe, when cultural distinctions helped to mark out the borders up for grabs in a reformulated Europe. In this programme we'll hear about some of Dvorák's nationally inspired compositions, including his Hussite Overture. It was written in 1883 at the request of František Adolf Šubert, the Director of the National Theatre in Prague, as the overture to a play Šubert intended to write about the times of the Czech hero, the 14th century church reformer and patriot Jan Hus. The main theme adopted by Dvorák is the Hussite hymn, Ye Warriors of God, which was a rallying cry to all Czechs at the time.

Conductor Laureate Sir Andrew Davis takes on Berlioz's retelling of Shakespeare's indelible tragedy with soloists, chorus and orchestra. Made possible by a gift of 20,000 francs from the violinist Nicolò Paganini, Berlioz's epic Romeo and Juliet turned out to be one of his enduring masterpieces, and he came to view the Love Scene as one of his favourite compositions. He warned, though, that this choral symphony was hugely demanding, and required 'long, patient rehearsal, impeccably directed', just what you can expect from Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

Orson Welles was infamous early in his career for a radio broadcast of HG Wells' War of the Worlds which - it's said - caused genuine panic that aliens were invading earth. For Free Thinking Larushka Ivan-Zadeh discusses Welles's last film, F For Fake, which tells the tangled story of art forger Elmyr de Hory.

And Gary Lachman and Kevin Jackson visit a new exhibition about Elizabethan alchemist, philosopher and mathematician John Dee - a mysterious figure who during his long career was sometimes a con-artist, and sometimes the conned.

Scholar, courtier, magician: the lost library of John Dee is on at the Royal College of Physicians in London until July 29th. Entry is free.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

The Bohemian Brahms

Donald Macleod explores the music associated with Antonin Dvorák's many visits to Britain.

Dvorák was first invited to Britain by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1884, to conduct a concert of his own music. Dvorák was almost overwhelmed by his experience of the metropolis - aghast at its sheer size. That first visit was the beginning of what proved to be a lasting, important relationship. Dvorák would return to these shores nine times, and came to be dubbed "the Bohemian Brahms'. He became so famous that his face appeared on one of the Wills cigarette cards.

As Bruckner's Third Symphony creeps into life through an awed hush, it reveals the composer's regard for his two great musical heroes: Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner.
But this was also the symphony with which Bruckner properly revealed to this world his own voice, in all its grandeur and individuality. From the majestic lone trumpet of its opening to the huge, overarching structure those chiselled notes engender, Bruckner's Third heralded a sense of breadth and awe that symphonic music hadn't visited before.

Other People (Hell Is...)

Friends

Acclaimed writer A L Kennedy muses on the hell that is other people, today looking at friends.

As someone so unable to deal with other people that she works at home, making up imaginary friends, who even then don't always behave, A L Kennedy admits to not necessarily being the best person to dish out advice on relationships. However, in this series she wonders whether she's perhaps been a little harsh when it comes to 'other people'.

Today, she ponders friendship, which, as a happily solitary only child, was something she managed to put off for as long as was decently possible...

Written and read by A L Kennedy, the award-winning novelist, dramatist and broadcaster.

Rob places Music in Time as he travels back to the Baroque period with Bach's Cantata BWV 212, 'We have a new Lord of the Manor', popularly known as the Peasant Cantata. Bach wrote this cantata as part of the celebrations to mark the acquisition of a new estate near Leipzig by one Carl Henrich von Dieskau, an inspector of land, alcohol and income taxes. Bach set a text in Saxon dialogue by his regular collaborator Picander and drew on several Saxon folk tunes to create this affectionate and humorous portrayal of the Saxon peasantry.

Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

In the New World

Donald Macleod continues his exploration of the life and work of Antonin Dvorák, today focusing on the composer's years in the United States.

It was the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival which first drew Dvorák to the United States. Initially commissioned to compose a work celebrating the anniversary. She subsequently invited Dvorák to take up the post of Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York - an institution she had founded, along with the American Opera Company, as a means towards her visionary ends of bringing into being a national American school of composition. She wanted to free American music from its possessive European parents. She'd chosen Dvorák because she'd seen how he'd established his own reputation as a composer in a distinct, nationalistic style. Up to this time, American composers had gone to Europe to study. Mrs Thurber aimed to make all that cross-Atlantic travel unnecessary.

In the run up to Radio 3's Folk Connections weekend, Penny Gore presents today's Thursday Opera Matinee: At the Boar's Head by Gustav Holst - his one-act opera combining folk tunes with scenes from Shakespeare's Henry IV.

While convalescing from an illness, Holst had been reading both Henry IV, Part I, and an edition of John Playford's The English Dancing Master. He noticed similarities between the metre of Shakespeare's lines and the rhythms of tunes in the Playford collection and he decided to incorporate the two into an opera.

New Generation Thinker Peter Mackay joins the conversation about landscapes and - as Radio 3 marks the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow with a focus on folk - he explores the way folk traditions have fed into Scottish poetry.

As arguments about whether the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford should be allowed to remain in place continue to divide students and alumni, journalist Nick Cohen and former Rector of Exeter College, Oxford Dame Frances Cairncross discuss how present day funding of colleges and universities can also be a contentious issue.

New Generation Thinker Peter Mackay explores the contrasting folk traditions in Irish and Scottish poetry as Radio 3 begins a weekend exploring folk connections.

FRI 09:00 Essential Classics (b06xyqqw)
Friday - Rob Cowan with Liz Lochhead

9am
My favourite... old-school violinists. Throughout the week Rob shares recordings by some of his favourite violinists. The line-up includes Jascha Heifetz, Ivry Gitlis, Christian Ferras, Toscha Seidel and Philippe Hirschhorn, in music by Richard Strauss, Lili Boulanger, Paganini, Tartini, Wagner and Saint-Saëns.

9.30am
Take part in today's challenge: two pieces of music are played together - can you work out what they are?

10am
Rob's guest this week, in the run-up to Radio 3's Folk Connections weekend, is the Scots Makar - the National Poet for Scotland - Liz Lochhead. Liz's poetry collections include Dreaming Frankenstein, True Confessions and New Cliches, Bagpipe Muzak and The Colour of Black and White: Poems 1984-2003. Liz is also a successful dramatist known for her historical play Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, her award-winning interpretation of the story of Medea, and her critically acclaimed translation of Molière's Tartuffe. She has been announced as the 2016 recipient of the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. Every day at 10am Liz will be sharing a selection of her favourite classical music, including music by Gluck, Sibelius and Korngold, plus Robert Burns' song Green Grow the Rashes.

10.30am
Rob places Music in Time. The focus is on the Modern period and Delius's English rhapsody, Brigg Fair. Written in 1907, it was one of the earliest and most effective concert works to reflect the recent English Folk Song Revival, in which Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger were pioneering figures. 'Brigg Fair', the folksong, was 'collected' by Grainger in 1905 after a musical festival in the North Lincolnshire town of Brigg. When Delius heard Grainger's own arrangement of the song for solo tenor and chorus, he asked his permission to use it as the basis for this magnificent orchestral theme and variations.

11am
Rob's artist of the week is the acclaimed Hungarian-American conductor Antal Doráti, whose early experience in opera houses in Budapest, Munster, Dresden and Monte Carlo led to a dazzling international career at the helm of a string of top orchestras in the USA and Britain. His vast and varied recording legacy is witness to his performing style, which combined dramatic intensity, rhythmic vigor and an acute ear for colour. Throughout the week Rob showcases a selection of Doráti's finest interpretations of works including Tchaikovsky's Suite No. 3 in G, Schumann's Violin Concerto in D minor, Bartók's Dance Suite, Koechlin's Les Bandar-Log and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b06xyqqy)
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

Towards Dramatic Composition

Donald Macleod focuses on the final years in the life of the composer Antonin Dvorák.

Dvorák's last years were productive ones. After turning down an offer from Brahms to move to Vienna to teach at the Conservatoire, he composed a series of tone poems associated with myths and legends, and all taking their inspiration from ballads by the Czech poet Karel Jaromír Erben. These would be his final orchestral works.

Dvorák had served his musical apprenticeship in the orchestra of what was then Prague's opera house and at the end of his life he retained his passion, obsession even, about composing opera. Just two months before his death in May 1904, Dvorák told a journalist from an Austrian newspaper that, "in the last five years I have written nothing but operas. I wanted to devote all my powers, as long as God gives me the health, to the creation of opera. ... I consider opera the most suitable form for the nation. This music is listened to by the broad masses, whereas when I compose a symphony, I might have to wait years for it to be performed."
