SAT 13:00 Saturday Classics (b06vnbyw)
Katie Puckrik

American broadcaster Katie Puckrik indulges in a little 'classical cross-pollination' as she presents familiar music in unfamiliar settings. Her choices include the first movement of Bach's concerto for two violins in D minor played by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and the Hallelujah Chorus performed by the folk trio The Roches. There is music which contains American folk themes (Aaron Copland's Billy the Kid and the Hawthorne movement from Charles Ives' Piano Sonata No.2) and music played on the 'wrong' instruments (the first movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.3 performed on the Moog synthesizer and the Largo from the Winter movement of Vivaldi's the Four Seasons on a church organ).

Kamasi Washington

Julian Joseph presents highlights of the much anticipated UK performance of saxophonist Kamasi Washington, recorded in front of a capacity crowd at the Barbican Theatre as part of the 2015 London Jazz Festival. Washington's debut album, a triple album , was one of the highlight releases of 2015 appearing in many end of year polls. Inspired by the spiritual jazz recordings of saxophonists John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler, he adds a contemporary twist to the music incorporating elements of funk, gospel and hip-hop. Kamasi has collaborated with a diverse range of musical giants including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, rapper Snoop Dogg and vocalist Chaka Khan.

SAT 18:00 Opera on 3 (b06vndr3)
Live from the Met

Bizet's The Pearl Fishers

For the first time in 100 years, Bizet's The Pearl Fishers comes to the Met. Pearl divers Nadir and Zurga talk about the time their friendship was nearly destroyed when they both fell in love with the same woman - the beautiful Hindu priestess Leila. When a veiled princess arrives in the village, Nadir immediately recognises it as Leila, who he still loves, and which will test their friendship once again. The themes of love, betrayal and vengeance are brought to life in Bizet's exotic score, which includes ravishing music such as the famous duet, Au fond du temple saint. Gianandrea Noseda conducts a cast including Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien as the rival pearl divers and Diana Damrau as the object of their affection.

Presented by Mary Jo Heath and Ira Siff.

Marilyn Horne

Norman Lebrecht talks to the American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, tracing her career from precocious Shirley Temple sound-alike, to pirate recordings of pop songs in the 1950s, to dubbing the title role in the movie of the Oscar Hammerstein musical Carmen Jones, and finally the breakthrough to the major mezzo Bel Canto roles of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti for which she was justly famed. She also talks about her experience of early masterclasses with the veteran singer Lotte Lehmann and how the sometimes unhappy experience of that has influenced her approach to helping young singers and teaching masterclasses in her retirement. She discusses her relationship with other musicians such as Stravinsky, Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge. In her frank and direct manner she also reveals to Norman Lebrecht the difficulties she had with her family when she married the black conductor Henry Lewis.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b061fmcf)
Henry Marsh

Henry Marsh is one of the country's leading neurosurgeons: as a senior consultant at St George's University Hospital in South London, he has pioneered brain surgery for more than 30 years.

These are delicate, microscopic operations to deal with tumours and aneurisms where the least slip can be catastrophic: comparable, he says, to bomb disposal work. Henry Marsh's account of his career, 'Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery', has become a best-seller.

In Private Passions, he talks about how his work has given him a heightened awareness of the unpredictability of life, and about the role of music in dealing with stress. He discusses the use of music during operations themselves; he used to listen to music, but after one operation went badly wrong, now feels it is inappropriate. And he gives a neuroscientist's perspective on falling in love.
Music choices include Bach's St Matthew Passion, Mozart's Magic Flute, Scarlatti, Bartok, Prokofiev, Beethoven, and African music which reminds him of time spent teaching in Ghana.

Produced by Elizabeth Burke. A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

SUN 14:00 The Early Music Show (b04sv2wk)
Lost Sounds

Clare Salaman on forgotten instruments which were once part of everyday musical life.

Clare considers why instruments which were once part of musical life - such as the vielle, the bray harp, the hurdy gurdy and the viola organista - are now rarely heard. Some were particularly suited to certain styles of music and unable to keep up when fashions changed. Others, while astonishing, intriguing and even beautiful in their design proved totally impractical for everyday use. Clare chooses recordings of some of these lost instruments, which create sounds which are very rarely heard today.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b06vnmnn)
Literary Pursuits

Jean Rhys: Wide Sargasso Sea

Sarah Dillon is a literary detective, hunting down the story behind the story of the writing of great works. Jean Rhys was the author of four novels in the late 20s and 30s when she disappeared off the literary map and was presumed dead. She spectacularly re-appeared with the publication of Wide Sargasso Sea, telling the back story of the first Mrs Rochester from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. Published in 1966 when the author was in her 70s, the novel became an instant classic.

Sarah Dillon goes on a journey to find out why there was a 27-year gap between novels: she travels to the British Library to look at Rhys's original notebooks; talks to Carole Angier, Jean's biographer; and goes to meet Jean's publisher Diana Athill.

The struggle to bring the book to completion touches on poverty, death and a passionate desire for perfection.

SUN 21:00 Drama on 3 (b06vp3c9)
El Cid

Pierre Corneille was one of France's three outstanding Classical dramatists, alongside Racine and Moliere. The Cid is his most famous - but in Britain too little-performed - play. The distinguished translator Ranjit Bolt's refashioning tells the story of the younger Cid, a self-indulgent, love-smitten courtier in 11th-century Spain who when duty calls rises to the occasion to become Spain's greatest hero.

The star-studded cast includes James Purefoy as the Cid, with Indira Varma as Ximena, Gina McKee as the Princess, and features Eleanor Bron and David Calder.

Rodrigo is a charming young courtier who plans to marry Ximena. But when her father, the chief general in the King's army, insults Rodrigo's father, he finds himself challenged by Rodrigo to a duel. The young, un-warlike suitor knows that if he loses he dies, but also that if he wins he loses Ximena. Pierre Corneille's landmark play examines the ethical and emotional dilemmas faced by the legendary champion-to-be, and his intended. It is a tale of love, honour and might, but in the great tradition of Racine and their other contemporary writers of tragedy, Corneille focuses on romantic dilemma, to show how lovers act under intense duress, and what choices - and perhaps compromises - they then make.

Bolt's translation is at once daring and faithful. He has observed the conventions of 17th century French Drama (rules imposed on his select group of writers by the infamous Cardinal Richelieu, intent on restoring classical virtues). But Bolt in customary fashion has dynamised the language and style.

Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013)

Timbre, Space and Movement

Dutilleux 100

Donald Macleod explores the life and work of one of the 20th century's most sensuous and beguiling musical voices.

Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) was one of French music's greatest composers: the heir to Fauré, Debussy and Ravel. His music blends ravishing instrumental colours and harmonies with a highly individual approach to new sounds and forms. Always beautiful, never barbarous, Dutilleux's music never clung dogmatically to avant-garde trends or fashions, making his one of the most accessible and appealing modern voices in classical music. In the week of what would have been Dutilleux's 100th birthday, Donald Macleod discusses his life and legacy with two of the UK's leading experts on his music, who the composer wryly dubbed "les deux Carolines...": Caroline Potter and Caroline Rae.

The week begins with Dutilleux's early years growing up in Douai in the far north of France, his struggles in Occupied Paris during the Second World War, and two of his most beloved orchestral works: "Timbres, Space and Movement" and his First Symphony.

Landmark: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Merlin Holland, Will Self and Fiona Shaw join Matthew Sweet for a discussion about Oscar Wilde's novel which was published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in the July 1890 issue and then as a book 121 years ago in 1891. It prompted discussions about censorship and hedonism and went on to play a considerable part in the writer's downfall. Endlessly filmed, The Picture of Dorian Gray seems to communicate directly to successive generations - but how much about its writer can it really tell us.

Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde's grandson, has adapted it for a new stage version which runs at The Trafalgar Studios in London from January 18th to February 13th.
Will Self's novel Dorian: An Imitation updated the story to the late 20th century.
Fiona Shaw played Agatha in the 2009 film version, Dorian Gray.

Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013)

A Whole Distant World

Dutilleux 100

Donald Macleod explores a pair of rare works for voices, plus a unique cello concerto for the virtuoso Mstislav Rostropovich.

The week continues with a true Dutilleux rarity - his arrangements of traditional French sea shanties for young voices, completed during his time at Radio France. We also hear from his uniquely imaginative Symphony no.2 "Le Double", for two orchestras, and end with the work the composer himself felt was his most exquisitely lyrical - his Cello Concerto "A Whole Distant World", written for the great Russian cello virtuoso Mstistlav Rostropovich.

Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony

Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
Kirill Karabits, conductor

Tchaikovsky saw himself as the victim of a cold, cruel fate. So he identified closely with Manfred, the lonely, heartbroken wanderer at the centre of Byron's epic poem. His Manfred Symphony is technically challenging, yet full of bountiful drama, colour and a memorable series of melodies.

Dutilleux's concerto for cello and orchestra is an intense meditation on the poet Charles Baudelaire; each of the five movements begins with a fragment of verse. Introspective, luminous timbres and delicate textures collide with mighty climaxes in the orchestra whilst the demanding cello writing involves heart-rending melodies at the top of the instrument's range.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b06vr4k3)
Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013)

The Mystery of the Moment, the Shadows of Time

Dutilleux 100

Donald Macleod introduces poignant meditations on the passing of time, from Dutilleux's ninth and tenth decades.

To end the week, two profoundly moving meditations on the nature of passing time are prefaced by one of Dutilleux's most sheerly exuberant works: his collection of fleeting orchestral snapshots, "The Mystery Of The Moment". We end with the composer's swansong - his song cycle "Time And The Clock", written for the American soprano Renée Fleming.

Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) struck a bold path in the music of twentieth century France. When those around him were ripping up the rule book to make a break with the past, he found a way to develop music, in particular form, colour and harmony, whilst remaining connected to the sound world of Debussy and Ravel. Thomas Sondergard and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales commemorate his centenary with Metaboles, an explosive exploration of musical structure, and Sur le même accord, a lyrical nocturne for violin and orchestra. Dutilleux's love of Debussy is reflected in a new completion by Robert Orledge of the sketches for a Nocturne written for the great violin virtuoso Ysaye. Another musical completion closes the programme, Mozart's much-loved Requiem, left unfinished when the composer died in 1791.

Live from Celtic Connections 2016

Lopa Kothari is live from BBC Music at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, with special late-night performances from Moh! Kouyate from Guinea, Breton folk veterans Kornog performing as Breton Blend 2016 and Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal.

Radio 3's Celtic Connections programming expands to over 10 hours this year, with three late-night sessions from the CCA, and three specially-recorded concerts around Radio 3's 'Folk Connections' weekend at the end of the month. BBC Music offers extensive coverage of Celtic Connections this year, also featuring on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC2 TV in Scotland, and BBC Music Online.

Celtic Connections is held in 20 venues over 18 days with 300 events taking place throughout the whole festival, involving over two thousand musicians from 26 countries. Scots and Irish Celtic music is at the centre of the festival, but it has always embraced the music of the Celtic cultures of the USA, Canada, France and Spain, together with the closely connected cultures of Scandinavia and eastern Europe. In recent years the Festival has also connected with traditions across Africa and Asia. The concerts range from the most traditional to the most experimental, all brought together in the context of one of the world's liveliest folk cultures, with a never-ending stream of young Scottish musicians who are reinventing their own traditions for their own time.
