Anne meanwhile admits to herself that the ashes of her first love are still burning, and that she is now unhappy in her vain splendor. In Donizetti's story of the doomed queen, Sondra Radvanovsky takes the title role as Anne Boleyn, Ildar Abdrazakov is King Henry VIII, Milijana Nikolic is Jane Seymour, the king's consort, and Stephen Costello plays the queen's love interest in Sir David McVicar's gripping period production. SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b051zvvn)
Anna Meredith

Michael Berkeley's guest is Anna Meredith - one of Britain's leading composers coming up from the younger generation. She is hard to label as she composes and performs both acoustic and electronic music, and her work has been performed everywhere from the Last Night of the Proms to flashmob events in the M6 services. She studied at York University and the Royal College of Music, and alongside numerous awards, she's been Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and a judge for BBC Young Musician of the Year. She was recently commissioned as part of the BBC Ten Pieces initiative to write a piece which will be played to primary school children across the country, to introduce them to classical music.

In Private Passions she talks to Michael Berkeley about the music which inspires her, and explains why composers now still have a lot to learn from 16th century madrigals. She celebrates Sibelius and his extraordinary 5th symphony, and Holst's music for wind band, unfashionable though it may be. She introduces work by a new generation of composers too: Emily Hall, Richard Ayres and Owen Pallet. And she reveals why she goes into schools to inspire teenage girls by playing Bjork, and reflects on what it means to be a woman composer now:

My music tends to be quite bombastic, and I've heard people say "It doesn't sound very female", or "What's a nice girl like you doing writing music like that?" When I'm doing electronic music I do all the computer stuff myself and sometimes there's an assumption that there must be a guy somewhere behind the scenes working all the software magic...

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b06twqbl)
Literary Pursuits

Charles Dickens: Great Expectations

Sarah Dillon is a literary detective on the hunt for the story behind the story of how great works were written. She begins with Dickens's masterpiece, Great Expectations. Begun in 1860, Sarah asks why Dickens was writing it so fast - he finished it in nine and a half months - and why he famously changed the ending. The answers take her on a journey to Dickens's home in Gads Hill in Kent, the office of his magazine All The Year Round in Covent Garden and on a night-walk around the streets of London, where Dickens drew on the energy of the city as inspiration. Talking to Dickens biographer Michael Slater and scholars Juliet John from Royal Holloway and John Drew from the University of Buckingham, Sarah pieces together how Dickens's most private life is played out in the novel. And she uncovers the fascinating events behind the writing of it - including an urgent necessity for money, an overwhelming passion, and a relationship that goes to the heart of the deepest psychological needs that Dickens had.

Reader - Samuel West.

SUN 21:00 Drama on 3 (b06twqcd)
Artist Descending a Staircase

Tom Stoppard's Artist Descending a Staircase is both very much written for, and a tribute to, the medium of radio - the medium for which Tom Stoppard first started writing drama. Originally written for radio in 1972, this will be the first new production to be heard on the airwaves for 43 years.

Taking its title from Duchamp's painting Nude Descending a Staircase No 2, Tom Stoppard's 1972 radio play is both a funny and moving exploration of the meaning and purpose of art and the constantly shifting uncertainties of so-called "reality". It is also a tragic love story.

It begins in classic murder-mystery mode. Donner, an elderly artist, lies dead at the bottom of the staircase. His last moments of life - ambiguous fragments of sounds and words - have been captured by the tape recorder, which his housemate Beauchamp uses to make ''tonal art''. But the meaning of these aural clues (which are replayed and re-examined nearly as assiduously as the tape in Coppola's film The Conversation), depends entirely on the radio listener's interpretation of them. Beauchamp and the third artist, Martello, assume - quite understandably - that the recorded clues can only mean that one or other of them is a murderer. But Stoppard aficionados will know that reality is never quite what it seems, and that there is a characteristic coup de théâtre (or coup de radio) awaiting them in the last scene of this beguiling drama.

Martello (older) ..... Geoffrey Whitehead
Beauchamp (older) ..... Derek Jacobi

9am
My favourite... operatic intermezzos. In this new feature Sarah shares her top operatic intermezzos, highlighting the emotional directness and unforgettable melodies of these orchestral miniatures, tucked inside operas by Puccini, Wolf Ferrari, Offenbach, Leoncavallo and Mascagni.

9.30am
Take part in our daily music-related challenge: listen to the clues and identify the mystery object.

10am
At the start of the year that marks 400 years since Shakespeare's death, Sarah's guest is the Laurence Olivier Award-winning actor Antony Sher. Antony is a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company and has acted many of the Bard's most famous roles, from Richard III to Falstaff. He has written a number of books recording the stages of researching, rehearsing and performing great Shakespearean parts, offering a behind the scenes look at the Royal Shakespeare Company at work. Throughout the week Antony shares a selection of his favourite classical music, talks about bringing Mahler to life on the stage and explains how he is preparing for his starring role in King Lear.

10.30am
Sarah features a piece by Henri Dutilleux following the survey of his works in last Saturday's Record Review

11am
Sarah's Artists of the Week are the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. When they started out in 1986, this unique period instrument band decided to throw away the orchestral rule book. They were self-governing, their leaders rotated, and they worked with a range of conductors. Despite their name, they are keen to explore a wide repertoire, from Monteverdi to Mahler and beyond; and their four Principal Artists are Sir Simon Rattle, Ivan Fischer, Sir Mark Elder and Vladimir Jurowski. To celebrate the orchestra's thirtieth anniversary year, Sarah showcases a range of their recordings, demonstrating their diversity, artistry, and the brilliantly incisive, colourful style of playing.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b06tx2zq)
Jean Coulthard (1908 -2000)

French Impressionism Makes Its Mark

Canadian composer Jean Coulthard (1908-2000) was a woman who determinedly followed her own musical path, creating an impressive body of work which, though attracting international recognition during her lifetime, is rarely heard today outside her native country.

Coulthard produced around 350 works in her very long career, for many years fitting composing around her job as a university lecturer and the responsibilities of family life. She was fortunate in having a musical mother whose passion for the French Impressionist composers rubbed off on her daughter, as is is clearly evident in her earlier works. Donald Macleod introduces a selection of works in which echoes of that distinctive soundworld can be heard, including a lament inspired by the chorale theme from a Bach cantata, and a piano concerto in the grand tradition of Beethoven and Schumann.

"O for a Muse of fire..." Shakespeare's Henry V crammed the Battle of Agincourt into a tiny wooden theatre. Four centuries later, William Walton matched that vision with music that redefined British cinema, and this lavish concert version weaves all the play's greatest speeches and Walton's score into a compelling musical drama. Edward Gardner launches the CBSO's year of Shakespeare celebrations with passionate Shakespearean masterpieces by Verdi and Richard Strauss.

Jazzahead! French Focus

Jez Nelson revisits Jazzahead! 2015 - an annual music festival and industry expo held in Bremen, Germany - this time with a focus on French bands, who provided many of the highlights.

Music comes from saxophonist Thomas De Pourquery and his group, Supersonic, who pay tribute to Sun Ra, with high-octane interpretations of some of the afrofuturist jazz maverick's best-loved tunes. Quirky, piano and drums duo Donkey Monkey blur the lines between jazz and punk, and young quintet Papanosh mix free improv with trad jazz, klezmer and sounds from the Balkans.

Veteran double bassist Henri Texier and his trio take us further afield, with lyrical compositions that whisper of the Middle East, while our guest Alex Dutilh, of Radio France, shares insights into the French jazz scene.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b06tx2yn)
Jean Coulthard (1908 -2000)

Expanding Horizons

The outbreak of World War II brought European artists to the USA and Canada and gave Coulthard the opportunity to study with a number of established composers, including Arthur Benjamin. He encouraged her to write for orchestra and incorporated her music into his concert series. Coulthard spent much of the war in New York where she benefitted from lessons with the Dutch composer Bernard Wagenaar, who helped her consolidate a new-found confidence in her writing. Donald Macleod introduces a sonata in which that new sense of certainty shines through, plus an early orchestral work with evocations of happy holidays, a choral song which reflects the spirit of renewal in post-war Canada, and music to celebrate the patron saint of music.

Wednesday - Sarah Walker with Antony Sher

9.30am
Take part in our daily musical challenge: can you work out which two composers are associated with a particular piece?

10.30am
Sarah places Music in Time. Today, the focus is on the Modern age. In 1922 Darius Milhaud travelled to New York to mingle with the jazz musicians of Harlem. What he heard was "absolutely different from anything I had ever heard before... a revelation" - and the result, on his return to France, was his riotous ballet, La Creation du Monde.

11am
Sarah's Artists of the Week are the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. When they started out in 1986, this unique period instrument band decided to throw away the orchestral rulebook.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b06tx2ys)
Jean Coulthard (1908 -2000)

Challenges and Opportunities

In the early 1950s Coulthard's role as lecturer in music theory at the University of British Columbia came under threat, and she was asked to leave. She managed to retain her position but was thankful to be offered a scholarship to study in Paris, where she took classes with Nadia Boulanger. Coulthard resolutely continued to develop her own brand of musical expression, ignoring the critics who berated her for refusing to embrace current trends. Donald Macleod explores works from this period when her style began to change including two very different sets of variations and a setting of poems by Canadian poets in honour of the centenary of the founding of British Columbia.

It is set alongside masterpieces by Ravel and Dutilleux, including Dutilleux's violin concerto L'arbre des songes (Tree of Dreams), performed by Leonidas Kavakos, and Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe Suite No 2, which the composer described as a 'symphonie choreographique'.

WED 22:00 Free Thinking (b06v2k1q)
French Thought and Politics

Philip Dodd wrestles with an especially knotty question - does France have to stop being French to survive? Its a question which owes its urgency to recent events from the massacres of last year to the rise of the Right and an apparent erosion of the secular values that underpin the Fifth Republic. What price the France of Camus and New Wave Cinema in the face of globalisation? To answer these questions Philip is joined by the political commentator Anne-Elisabeth Moutet, the historian Liz Buettner, the Muslim scholar, Ziauddin Sardar and Andy Martin, an expert in 20th century French literature which did so much to fix the features of modern France in our minds.

Europe After Empire by Elizabeth Buettner is published in April
Islam Beyond the Mad Max Jihadis by Ziauddin Sardar is published in February.

Farewell to teaching

Though she was out of step with musical fashions in Canada, Coulthard's reputation kept on growing. Regular broadcasts across the USA and parts of Europe attracted an international audience to her music. When she celebrated her 65th birthday in 1973, she was forced to retire from her teaching post at the University of British Columbia. But retirement gave her more time to compose and she got involved in publishing educational material for teachers. Donald Macleod introduces a selection of pieces from the years surrounding her retirement including a set of piano pieces inspired by reminiscences of an Aegean cruise, and a work for two quartets written as a farewell to her university life.

Evocative musical colours from City Halls, Glasgow. Ilan Volkov conducts Dukas' tone-poem, The Sorcerer's Apprentice; a work of such skilful orchestral imagination its storytelling went on to inspire the eponymous short film, staring Mickey Mouse.

Spellbinding colours are also at the centre of Unsuk Chin's recent Clarinet Concerto, performed this evening by the work's dedicatee: Finnish clarinet virtuoso Kari Kriikku.

And the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conclude by presenting a rarely heard, but very intriguing, 20th century French work, dedicated to the golden age of Hollywood glamour. Koechlin's Seven Stars Symphony (the stars in question including Greta Garbo and Douglas Fairbanks) depicts these heroes and heroines of cinema in swooping and melodic orchestral music, vividly coloured with Harpsichord, Saxophones and Ondes Martenot.

Donald Macleod introduces the third movement from the quartet plus an orchestral piece based on folksongs from across Canada, two pieces with nature themes, and one of her final piano pieces whose title, she says, "describes how the heavenly bodies provoke our imagination".

A yearning melancholy binds the music of Elgar and Butterworth that features in tonight's concert, and the sentiment is echoed in a beguiling new violin concerto from London-born composer Anna Clyne, written for dynamic violinist Jennifer Koh. George Butterworth, who died at the Somme in 1916, will forever be defined by his Housman settings, A Shropshire Lad, from which he derived this bittersweet orchestral rhapsody. 'A passionate pilgrimage of the soul' was how Elgar described his mighty, restless Second Symphony. Sakari Oramo, who has a strong affinity for English music, conducts.

FRI 23:00 World on 3 (b06v1ttb)
Live from Celtic Connections 2016

Lopa Kothari is live from BBC Music at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, with special late-night performances West Highlands group Dàimh, Québécois folk music from Les Poules de Colin and Trio da Kali from Mali. Live from the CCA, the BBC's hub on Sauchiehall Street.

Radio 3's Celtic Connections programming expands to over 10 hours this year, with three late-night sessions from the CCA, and three specially-recorded concerts around Radio 3's 'Folk Connections' weekend at the end of the month. BBC Music offers extensive coverage of Celtic Connections this year, also featuring on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Scotland, BBC2 TV in Scotland, and BBC Music Online. Artists appearing at the World on 3 Sessions range from young Welsh band Calan to African superstar Baaba Maal.

Celtic Connections is held in 20 venues over 18 days with 300 events taking place throughout the whole festival, involving over two thousand musicians from 26 countries. Scots and Irish Celtic music is at the centre of the festival, but it has always embraced the music of the Celtic cultures of the USA, Canada, France and Spain, together with the closely connected cultures of Scandinavia and eastern Europe. In recent years the Festival has also connected with traditions across Africa and Asia. The concerts range from the most traditional to the most experimental, all brought together in the context of one of the world's liveliest folk cultures, with a never-ending stream of young Scottish musicians who are reinventing their own traditions for their own time.
