Building a Library: Oliver Condy recommends a version of Poulenc's Organ Concerto. In 1936 Poulenc made a pilgrimage to the Black Virgin of Rocamadour, where his Christian faith was reignited. And there is a feeling of anxious spiritual questioning in this concerto. But Poulenc also contrasts the religious mood with the more jovial Poulenc of the cabaret and the fairground.

Verdi's The Force of Destiny, recorded last month at the London Coliseum. Mark Wigglesworth conducts the ENO orchestra and chorus, as well as a superb cast lead by the soprano Tamara Wilson in a critically acclaimed performance as Donna Leonora, and the tenor Gwyn Hughes Jones as her lover Don Alvaro. Don Carlo di Vargas is sung by the baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore. Drawing from deep personal references, Calixto Bieito directs this new production at the English National Opera staging this tale of love and revenge - with the main characters incapable of escaping their doomed fate - in the middle of the Spanish Civil War. Chilly Gonzales
Canadian pianist Chilly Gonzales is on a mission - to get us all playing. His piano books and online pop music masterclasses attract hundreds of thousands of hits. Classically trained, he has one of the least orthodox careers in recent music: he made his name in rap, electronica and pop, becoming a successful songwriter and producer for the likes of the rapper Drake and the band Daft Punk. More recently he has been composing for piano and now for strings as well. He has a mission to break down the barrier between art and entertainment, and above all, a simple, overriding passion for music.
His stage shows - both in concert halls and in less conventional places such as old Cold-War German bunkers - are pretty dazzling affairs, and he appears dressed like a matinee idol in a silk robe and slippers.
Chilly chooses music by Mahler, Michael Nyman and Scarlatti, and songs from Fauré, Dionne Warwick and Drake.
He talks to Michael about musical genius, the art of rapping, and above all the endless possibilities and joy he finds in the piano.

Cuba Clasica
Before the 1959 Revolution, Havana was a stopping-off point on the international classical concert and opera circuit. Social changes brought with them cultural changes from the 1960s onwards, and the opportunities for exchange with Western classical artists diminished. More recently, Cuba's popular musical culture has been exported worldwide thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club phenonenon, but is there a thriving classical music scene in Cuba today? Andrew McGregor visited Havana last autumn to find out, meeting performers, students, teachers, radio presenters and academics.
For a small island in the Caribbean, Cuba has played a significant part in world events. But in recent years it is the traditional music which has captivated the world, with son, salsa and cha-cha-cha. The island's other major (and officially supported) cultural phenomenon is ballet; Cuba's dance schools have produced famously athletic male dancers, Carlos Acosta being the best-known outside Cuba today.
Cuba's classical music credentials may be less obvious, but these can be traced back to the Spanish colonisers who introduced their own art forms. The island's first native classical composer, Esteban Salas, was born in Havana in 1725, and his music has been rediscovered by Cuba's fledgling Early Music movement. In the 19th century the most influential composer was Ignacio Cervantes. His Danzas are exquisite piano miniatures which deserve greater recognition today.
In the 1940s and 50s, shortly before the Revolution, Havana was a part of the international concert circuit. The Havana Philharmonic had a strong reputation under the baton of Erich Kleiber, and famous names such as Pablo Casals, Renata Tebaldi, Artur Rubinstein, and Jascha Heifetz all performed there.
In Havana today music of all kinds is everywhere: on the street, in the bars, and in the churches and theatres, but there are fewer boundaries - Cubans don't pigeonhole music into different types.

St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Yuri Temirkanov (conductor)
German violinist Julia Fischer joins the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra as soloist in Tchaikovsky's much-loved Violin Concerto - a work in which concert-hall sophistication balances rustic folk-simplicity, overflowing with tunes and climaxing in a dazzling rondo finale. Big tunes - or, at least, one big tune - also dominate Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations, his affectionate musical portrait of friends and acquaintances. The concert opens with one of Rimsky-Korsakov's finest scores, the 'three symphonic pictures' adapted from his 1907 opera The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh - a work sometimes nicknamed 'the Russian Parsifal'.

Votes for Women
Zoe Tapper and Samuel West star in Elizabeth Robins's play, first performed in 1907 and written to support the cause of women's suffrage.
Admired Conservative MP Geoffrey Stonor is relishing his engagement to the ebullient young heiress Jean Dunbarton until a chance encounter with the charismatic Vida Levering, an advocate of women's suffrage, appears to threaten them both - not just politically, but personally too.
Produced and directed by Marion Nancarrow
Votes for Women is a suffragette play, originally performed in 1907 at the Court Theatre (now the Royal Court), which remains both modern and surprisingly controversial. Writer Elizabeth Robins, an American actress, was hugely admired by London audiences at the time, most notably for her performance as Hedda Gabler. A philanthropist and doyenne of the literati, she was also famed for having pulled a gun on George Bernard Shaw when he made a pass at her! Votes for Women was originally written as a novel - Robins having done her research by interviewing women about their lives (this forms the middle of the play, set at a rally in Trafalgar Square). It was turned into a play when the suffragette movement realised the power of theatre to affect public opinion and, shortly after its run in London, Robins was instrumental in setting up the Actresses' Franchise League.

Monday - Sarah Walker with Alec Baldwin
9am
Sarah presents '5 Reasons to Love... the Waltz'. Throughout the week she enjoys its elegance and expressivity; its high-spirited flirtatiousness; its capacity to conjure up fairytale romance; the Viennese pride expressed in the waltzes of the Strauss family; and the way it can seem to spin out of control, revealing its darker side. Sarah shares waltzes by composers including Weber, Liszt, Johann Strauss II (arr. Webern), Chopin and Prokofiev.

Take part in our daily musical challenge: identify a piece of music played backwards.

Sarah's guest is the Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin. A star of the small screen as well as the silver screen, Alec is known for both his comic and dramatic roles, and has amassed a list of film and TV credits including 30 Rock, The Hunt for Red October and the latest film in the Mission: Impossible series: Rogue Nation. Alec is a passionate classical music fan, whose damascene moment was hearing Mahler's 9th Symphony conducted by Sir Georg Solti whilst driving his car in Los Angeles. Mahler is still his number one love and he even had a special 'Mahler clause' inserted into his contract when filming It's Complicated. Alec also presents concerts for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra - he's said "It's my favourite job that I've ever had." Alec will be sharing a selection of his favourite classical music every day at
10am, including pieces by Sibelius, Rodrigo and Ravel, as well as works by the British composers Vaughan Williams and Frank Bridge.

MON 16:30 Words and Music (b0457qkc)
Featherbrained
An exploration of birds and the human imagination from Wallace Stevens to the crows in Disney's Dumbo with the actors Anna Maxwell Martin and Jonjo O'Neill.
Is there something atavistic about an earthbound creature's fascination with flying? Could this be why birds have such a grip on our imagination? Think of it - Shakespeare's starlings and jackdaws - Rossini's thieving magpie - Lewis Carroll and the dodo....The Owl and the Pussycat ...Messiaen's extraordinary musical aviary ... we're always adding to the list. Somehow, it seems, our minds are refreshed and perplexed by birds. Although profoundly different we seek out similarities with their behaviour; then, perversely, we decide to envy their singularity; we ponder their savagery, then wonder if we should follow their example; even as we hunt them, we marvel at their resilience - windblown scraps flying against a howling gale, or sandmartins snuggling together in deep domesticity. This evening's edition of Words and Music is an exploration of all things featherbrained - an all too human swoop from Wallace Stevens' blackbird to the singing crows in Disney's Dumbo; from the ambivalent sweetness of the dove you can hear in Du Fay or Penalosa to the slight and sensual figure of a wading girl that James Joyce transforms into a seabird. Whether a lark ascending makes your heart leap or whether you're stirred by the brassy lure of a buzzard, prepare to take wing.
Producer: Zahid Warley.

Semyon Bychkov (conductor)
The first of two consecutive nights with the Vienna Philharmonic under two different conductors. Here, Semyon Bychkov showcases Franz Schmidt's neglected Second Symphony - a work he has passionately championed. A bold piece of Brucknerian ambition, it has more than a hint of Richard Strauss about it. It's paired with Brahms's Third Symphony - the work that saw the composer finding his true musical identity, stepping out from behind his influences to create something lyrical yet strangely unresolved.

Wednesday - Sarah Walker with Alec Baldwin
9.30am
Take part in today's challenge. Two pieces of music are played together - can you work out what they are?
10am

Sarah places Music in Time. She heads to the Modern period to investigate Webern's highly individual conception of serialism in his Symphony, Op 21 - a work of captivating beauty.

Friday - Sarah Walker with Alec Baldwin
9.30am
Take part in today's music-related challenge and identify the place associated with a work.
9.45am

FRI 17:00 Words and Music (b0261vb2)
Untitled
It often seems that we live in a world where nothing exists unless it has a title of some kind. And yet there are experiences that we can't easily name... unique emotions that defy all categories. Our struggle to find a name sometimes expresses itself as poetry, sometimes as music... even if the attempt ends in failure. Of course attaching the word "untitled" to anything doesn't really help as this can serve as just another sort of title. That's the nature of things... or maybe just human nature.
In Words and Music this evening the actors Andrew Scott and Amelia Lowdell venture into the weightless world where experiences and what we call them have been allowed to float free... the realm of the untitled. Catullus, Wordsworth, Samuel Menashe and Emily Dickinson are swirling around with them out there as well as Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, Schumann and Conlon Nancarrow. There'll be others too although they may be hard to distinguish to begin with, having escaped their usual moorings. Should we revel in this buoyancy or prepare for a nasty fall? That's up to you.
Producer: Zahid Warley.

FRI 19:00 BBC Proms 2015 (b06sb9gq)
Prom 70: Rachmaninov and Rimsky-Korsakov
St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra with soloist Nikolai Lugansky (piano) and conductor, Yuri Temirkanov. From the 2015 BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Andrew McGregor.
Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor
Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade
Nikolai Lugansky (piano)
St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra
Yuri Temirkanov (conductor)
Just over a decade since their most recent visit, the St Petersburg Philharmonic and its renowned Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Yuri Temirkanov, returned to the Proms with a homegrown programme of Russian greats. Pianist Nikolai Lugansky is the soloist in Rachmaninov's most famous work, the Second Piano Concerto, with its lyrical slow movement and brilliant, virtuosic finale. Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade dissolves the magic and colour of the tales of the Thousand and One Nights into a glittering musical tapestry that the composer himself described as 'an oriental narrative of fairy-tale wonders'.
FRI 20:30 New Year New Music (b06sb9lj)
Stockhausen: Hymnen
A very rare complete performance of one of the great works of the late twentieth century avant garde: Karlheinz Stockhausen's iconic electroacoustic masterpiece Hymnen.
Taking as the starting point a December live performance by the London Sinfonietta of Hymnen's 3rd Region (originally composed to a commission by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic), Radio 3 has also acquired copies of the original four-channel tapes of the remaining Regions 1,2 and 4 of Hymnen from The Stockhausen Foundation for Music in Germany. This will be the first time that the whole piece has been broadcast in 4.0 surround sound - a world premiere and seismic broadcasting event in the history of modern music.
The German title "Hymnen" means "(national) anthems", and the work has a utopian theme, blending and transforming recordings of national anthems from around the world with many other sounds and atmospheres to create a powerfully immersive experience.
Presented by Robert Worby.
