Henry Cowell (1897-1965) was an American composer of experimental music and the central figure in a circle of avant-garde composers that included Carl Ruggles, Edgard Varèse, and Ruth Crawford. They were sometimes referred to as "ultra-modernists." In 1936 Cowell was sent to San Quentin State Prison on a "morals" charge involving a 17-year-old male. Despite being granted a pardon in 1942, the experience of prison had a devastating effect on him. And his music became noticeably more conservative soon after his release from San Quentin.

SAT 15:00 BBC Proms (b067x658)
Proms Saturday Matinees

PSM 4: London Sinfonietta

Michael Cox, Mark van de Wiel, the London Sinfonietta and Thierry Fischer, live at the BBC Proms. Celebrations for Pierre Boulez's 90th-birthday year reach a climax in this matinee performance, in which contemporary music specialists the London Sinfonietta pair Boulez's own music with that of young British composers Helen Grime and Christian Mason.

Live from Cadogan Hall, London
Presented by Tom Service

Pierre Boulez: Mémoriale ('... explosante-fixe ...' Originel)
Helen Grime: A Cold Spring
Pierre Boulez: Domaines
Christian Mason: Open to Infinity: a Grain of Sand (BBC co-commission: UK premiere)
Pierre Boulez: Éclat/Multiples

Michael Cox (flute)
Mark van de Wiel (clarinet)
London Sinfonietta
Thierry Fischer conductor

Pierre Boulez's Mémoriale puts the flute in the spotlight, showcasing minutiae of texture and articulation, while in Domaines it's a solo clarinet that gives out a sustained soliloquy. The two contrasting parts of Éclat/Multiples (1970) are theoretically part of a larger work, as yet unfinished by the composer. They make for a striking contrast: the brilliant, glittering colours of Éclat set against the nervy perpetual motion of Multiples.

This Prom will be repeated on Wednesday 2nd September at 2pm.

Sakari Oramo (conductor)

Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo pairs two of Sibelius's most engagingly descriptive works as we continue our 150th-anniversary celebrations of the composer. The folk hero Kullervo was the inspiration behind a powerful national statement for a country struggling to overthrow Russian rule. This massive musical hybrid - part cantata, part symphony, part suite - is a vivid and thrilling work, richly melodic but looking ahead to modernism in some striking musical gestures. En saga is a fairy tale without a plot, whose contrasting movements suggest many possible stories, but never commit to just one.

SAT 22:00 Hear and Now (b067x9y4)
Profile: John Luther Adams

Tom McKinney presents music by John Luther Adams, in conversation with the composer.

John Luther Adams was born in 1953 in the American Deep South and brought up in the suburbs of New York, but his music is mostly closely associated with the culture and landscape of Alaska, where he moved in the 1970s and lived for 40 years. He now divides his time between Harlem and the Mexican desert.

Combining his compositional training at the California Institute of the Arts, and the influence of composers from Sibelius to Feldman, with a deep concern for the environment, Adams's music has a profound connection with the natural world. His works often explore abstract dimensions of a particular place, resulting in immersive aural pictures which incorporate both musical and natural sounds and aspire to what he calls a 'sonic geography'.

Music in this special Hear and Now portrait includes Adams's early attempt at 'nature music', a cycle of chamber pieces called songbirdsongs, music from his Alaskan opera Earth and the Great Weather, and the orchestral piece Become Ocean, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0680hh5)
Jancis Robinson

In her forty-year career writing and broadcasting about wine, Jancis Robinson has probably done more than anyone else to make wine an accessible and joyous part of our lives, and to strip away a great deal of the pretensions that used to surround it. But she's also one of our leading scholars of wine, and the fourth edition of the book she describes as her 'fourth child', a mammoth updating of her nearly 1000-page-long Oxford Companion to Wine, is about to be published next month. She talks to Michael Berkeley about her love of opera, the excitement of tasting for the Queen, and the great pleasures of wine and music. Her choices include music by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Handel and a sweet English folk song. Producer: Jane Greenwood A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3

Scriabin: Piano Sonata No. 9, 'Black Mass'
Bartók: Piano Sonata, Sz.80
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111

Jeremy Denk, piano

Jeremy Denk is one of America's foremost pianists - a musician the New York Times hails as someone 'you want to hear no matter what he performs'. He makes his BBC Proms debut in a recital that puts Beethoven's final piano sonata at its core. It's a work that blends extrovert passion with a depth that characterises all of the composer's late works. We mark the centenary of Scriabin's death with his most famous piano sonata, the 'Black Mass' - a disconcerting, phantasmagorical musical journey, followed by Bartók's Piano Sonata, a piece strongly coloured by Hungarian folk melodies and rhythmic attack.

This Prom will be repeated on Sunday 30th August at 1pm.

It has been almost a decade since the San Francisco Symphony visited the Proms. The orchestra is joined by its Music Director of more than 20 years, Michael Tilson Thomas, and by American pianist Jeremy Denk in the latter's second concert of the season. Here Denk tackles an American rarity - Henry Cowell's extraordinary Piano Concerto, whose primitive textures require the soloist to pound the piano with fists and forearms. It is paired with Mahler's First Symphony, an ebullient youthful work filled with hints of the mature composer to come, and Schoenberg's imaginative Theme and Variations, heard in the composer's own orchestral arrangement.

Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major

Jeremy Denk (piano)
San Francisco Symphony
Michael Tilson Thomas (conductor)

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

A Messenger from God

For Johannes Brahms they were musical heroes who might just deign to hear out this unknown composer hoping to make his mark; for Robert and Clara Schumann the handsome young man was 'a messenger sent from God'. When he first called at their Düsseldorf home, little could Brahms foresee the extent to which their lives life would become inextricably connected. Donald Macleod tells the story of the first encounter between Brahms and Clara Schumann, who would become a lifelong friend, critic and inspiration.

Emerson String Quartet

The eminent Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja returns for her second Prom this season. She joins the members of the Emerson String Quartet as they make their Proms debut in a programme featuring two great chamber works of the 20th century. The concert begins with the original version of the hauntingly beautiful Adagio for strings from Barber's String Quartet, Op. 11, and ends with Shostakovich's Piano Quintet, with its darkly comic Scherzo and meditative, delicately melancholy Intermezzo. In between Elisabeth Leonskaja plays Debussy's 'Feux d'artifice' from the Second Book of Preludes - a display of technical and aural fireworks for solo piano.

Sibelius: Symphony No. 7 in C major

BBC Symphony Orchestra
Osmo Vänskä (conductor)

Who better to bring this year's cycle of Sibelius symphonies to a close than fellow countryman Osmo Vänskä, with one exceptional cycle already completed on disc and another currently under way. 'These symphonies of mine are more confessions of faith than are my other works,' wrote Sibelius, but the later symphonies were hard-won confessions in which the composer's creativity struggled with self-doubt and hostile critics. The results, however, are exceptional, from the soaring horn-led 'swan hymn' of the Fifth to the innocent beauty of the Sixth and the single-movement Seventh, with its total symphonic unity and an ending that has been called 'the grandest celebration of C major there ever was'.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b03ncnfc)
Cities on the Brink

Berlin

Stepping back in time, three BBC News correspondents present their personal perspectives on the capital cities of the major European powers that fought the Great War.

The first programme explores the epicentre of turmoil as the conflagration took hold: Berlin, the capital of Kaiser Wilhelm II's empire. Stephen Evans reminds us that the German capital on the eve of war was the world's most innovative technological centre. Einstein was here, the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics from 1914. Mark Twain called Berlin the "German Chicago" because of its dizzying sense of modernity and progress. Immigrants were sucked in by industry. In 1895, 20,000 Berliners worked in the factories being built on the outskirts of the city, living cheek-by-jowl in new blocks which became known as "rental barracks".

But all this industrial energy and the wealth it created - which we still associate with today's Germany - came at a price. Both male and female workers felt alienated in their work, likening themselves to machines. As women grew in importance to the economy, so did the loudness of the criticism of their alleged neglect of traditional home virtues. The image of Germany united in war that was to be orchestrated later in the year was already belied by the reality of daily life in the capital itself.

Producer Simon Coates.

Brahms to the Rescue

After Robert Schumann attempted to take his life by hurling himself into the swirling waters of the River Rhine, Brahms rushed to comfort Clara, and offer all the emotional support and practical assistance of which he was capable. Donald Macleod continues the story of their friendship, as we find the young composer steadily falling in love with the woman he admired. For her part, we find Clara coming to depend on his support, and his invigorating company, and admitting him into the tiny company of those she was prepared to address as 'Du' rather than 'Sie'.

Daniel Barenboim returns to the Proms, this time as both conductor and soloist, taking the piano part in Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony startled audiences with its ruthless concision - a reaction against the excesses of the late-Romantics. The Academic Festival Overture is an ebullient work the composer himself described as 'a very boisterous pot-pourri of student songs', and there's also a rare opportunity to hear the epic Triumphlied - celebrating German victories in the Franco-Prussian War in choral settings of striking power and vividness. American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, winner of the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, is the soloist in Brahms's glorious Alto Rhapsody, and completing the concert is Brahms's First Symphony - a work nicknamed 'Beethoven's 10th' for its obvious debt to the elder composer.

Music in the Great War: Gavrilo Princip's Footprint

On the sunny morning of June 28th 1914, Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip shot dead the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. Their assassination began a chain of events that would bring the world to war, destroy three empires and lead to the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The promise of just such national liberation had carried Gavrilo Princip and his fellow assassins from their remote Balkan villages into a world of ideas suffused with freedom and violence. Princip would rot in a cell in the Austrian fortress of Terezin, dying months before the end of the Great War.

Maria Margaronis travels to Belgrade and Sarajevo to unravel the many meanings of Princip then and now. In the centenary year of 2014, plays, films, exhibitions, rival conferences, contested memorials and bitter politics swirl around the figure of Princip. In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, the ideas that drove Princip offer, for some, an invigorating challenge to the 'Black Hand' of corrupt politics and divisive nationalism. For others, Princip reaffirms national pride and comes with a rejection of culpability for war then and now. The city of Sarajevo, now the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, eyes the legacy of Princip with something like resentment and weariness. Princip's bones, along with his fellow assassins, were returned here in 1920 and placed in a 'temple of Serbdom' in 1939, just before Yugoslavia was torn apart. Under Tito, the site of the assassination bore a plaque proclaiming Princip a freedom fighter; a museum bearing Princip's name became a site of pilgrimage, whilst on the pavement were introduced a set of footprints - an artwork that, for decades, invited passers-by to imagine themselves in Princip's feet. These were torn up during the four-year siege as a resented symbol of Serbian nationalism. Yet in the Republic of Srpska there are plans to erect a statue to Princip and rebuild his family home. Maria Margaronis discovers that Princip's past and present remain deeply contested as current attempts to commemorate both his deeds and his memory book-end a century of conflict.

Cities on the Brink

St Petersburg

Stepping back in time, BBC News correspondents present their personal perspectives on the capital cities of major European powers that fought the Great War.

The series continues with the remarkable city which would - uniquely - soon be renamed amidst bloody regicide and revolution: St Petersburg.

The BBC's Moscow correspondent, Steve Rosenberg, finds a revealing connection, however, between the St. Petersburg of a hundred years ago and its counterpart of today.

He tells the remarkable story of the Grand International Masters' Chess Tournament of 1914, with its starring cast of Russian, German, French, British and American competitors and its dramas of who won and who lost.

But the tournament also demonstrated the Russian passion for chess that continues to this day and helps define its national identity as well as the fierce competition with other countries.

Celebrations for Pierre Boulez's 90th-birthday year reach a climax in this performance, in which contemporary music specialists the London Sinfonietta pair Boulez's own music with that of young British composers Helen Grime and Christian Mason.

Presented by Tom Service from Cadogan Hall, London.

Pierre Boulez: Mémoriale ('... explosante-fixe ...' Originel)

2:10pm:
Helen Grime: A Cold Spring

2:20pm:

2:45pm:
Pierre Boulez: Éclat/Multiples

Michael Cox (flute)
Mark van de Wiel (clarinet)
London Sinfonietta
Thierry Fischer (conductor)

Pierre Boulez's Mémoriale puts the flute in the spotlight, showcasing minutiae of texture and articulation, while in Domaines it's a solo clarinet that gives out a sustained soliloquy. The two contrasting parts of Éclat/Multiples (1970) are theoretically part of a larger work, as yet unfinished by the composer. They make for a striking contrast: the brilliant, glittering colours of Éclat set against the nervy perpetual motion of Multiples.

WED 22:15 Sunday Feature (b04nql0m)
God and the Great War

Frank Cottrell Boyce explores the impact of the First World War on religious belief and practice on the military front and at home.

Conventional wisdom has it that, if the Great War didn't actually kill God, it did him great injury. This programme challenges that narrative. In many ways religion flourished; old practices revived, fresh idioms found, Christian language and symbolism co-opted in the war effort.

In this documentary, Frank Cottrell Boyce explains why the First World War may even have been "good for religion." He tells the stories of the "Young Crescent" newsletter which connected a Liverpool church with its boys on the front line, the mushrooming of churches around the Gretna munitions settlement, and the Brighton Pavilion hospital, set up to cater for the medical - and religious - needs of India's war wounded.

The kind of religion that flourished during the war was neither denominational nor dogmatic Perhaps that's why religious observers failed to recognise it at the time. Later it would come to be described as "diffusive Christianity" - eclectic, personal and practical. The religious role of women became important when pressure from bereaved mothers and wives forced the re-introduction of "popeish" practices such as street shrines and prayers for the dead. Perhaps the war even broadened the British perspective on non-Christian faiths. Until the war, India's Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were Britain's colonial subjects in need of a firm hand by Government and of conversion by missionaries. Now they were fellow fighters for the Empire.

And with Armistice Day, a new date was added to the nation's religious calendar. One hundred years on, remembering has become our national act of communion.

Producer: Rosie Dawson.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat major, K482

2:55pm
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 15 in A major, Op 141

Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Charles Dutoit (conductor)

It has been almost 30 years since the celebrated Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja last performed at the Proms. She makes her return alongside the internationally renowned conductor Charles Dutoit, in Mozart's majestic E flat Piano Concerto. Written concurrently with The Marriage of Figaro, the concerto shares much of the opera's grace and its abundance of tunes, as well as some strikingly lovely woodwind textures. Shostakovich's 15th Symphony is an altogether darker affair - intimate and introspective. Musical memories haunt the score as the composer searches for meaning in what he surely knew would be his final symphony.

[First broadcast on Wednesday 19th August]

Followed by a selection of recordings from this week's Proms Artists.

It's one of the composer's best-loved works, one that avoids musical clichés of the exotic Orient, conjuring scenes altogether more subtle and vivid. A major premiere by the orchestra's Composer-in-Association, B Tommy Andersson, puts organist David Goode in the spotlight and the concert concludes with the sunniest and most intimate of Mahler's symphonies - the concise Fourth, a work filled with birdsong and pastoral landscapes that features a child's-eye view of Heaven in its final movement.

Singing Machines

Will a machine ever be able to sing? Professor Trevor Cox asks if technology will ever match the human voice.

Attempts to develop a machine that can sing date back to Wolfgang von Kempelen's Speaking Machine of 1769, which was a physical model of the vocal tract. Trevor goes to York University to see if David Howard can get von Kempelen's Machine to sing.

There were further attempts to create singing mechanical or electrical machines that could sing, but it was only with the development of computer technology that a lifelike singing machine became possible.

In the early 1990s a computer model of the physics of the human vocal tract performed Nessun Dorma - the machine was called Pavarobotti. Trevor talks to Pavarobotti's inventor, Ingo Titze.

In the early 21st century, samples of a real singer were used to create a library of sounds which can be pieced together to create the impression of a real person singing opera. Trevor speaks to the music journalist Kate Hutchinson about how this technology has developed in a surprising way, and has taken on a new life of its own.

Prom 65: Alice Coote sings Handel

Live at the BBC Proms: Alice Coote and The English Concert with Harry Bicket in a programme of Handel arias.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London
Presented by Martin Handley

Handel - Arias from operas, oratorios and cantatas

Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano)
The English Concert
Harry Bicket (conductor)
Susannah Waters (stage director)

A programme of arias from Handel's operas, oratorios and cantatas - including Giulio Cesare, Semele, Hercules, Theodora, Messiah and Tra le fiamme - as a window on 'being both': the dilemmas and turbulent emotions experienced by both male and female characters
Few composers express emotion as directly or with greater psychological truth than Handel. British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote explores the full gamut of these emotions in a Late Night Prom featuring some of Handel's greatest arias. Taking on both male and female roles, she delves into what it means to be a man, or a woman, in Handel's world of sorceresses and knights, kings and queens. She is joined in her theatrical journey by regular collaborators and period-performance specialists Harry Bicket and The English Concert.

This Prom will be repeated on Wednesday 9th September at 2pm.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Rows and Reconciliation

The bearded and bloated Brahms of caricature continued to be inspired by Clara Schumann, despite a multitude of fleeting passions for other women. As Donald Macleod wraps up his account of their long and frequently troubled friendship, we find them at loggerheads in the late evening of their lives about something relatively trivial (an edition of Robert Schumann's 4th Symphony). Clara becomes jealous of the attentions of Frau Elizabeth von Herzogenberg, and feels snubbed. Nevertheless, through all her many personal tragedies, Johannes Brahms remains a constant support, whilst she remained for him an inspiration throughout his life. Right until the end of their lives, he refers his symphonies to her, and dedicates to her some of his most tender, valedictory piano compositions.

Nikolaj Znaider (violin)
Anna Lucia Richter (soprano)
David Danholt (tenor)
Choristers of Winchester Cathedral
Danish National Concert Choir
Danish National Symphony Orchestra
Fabio Luisi (conductor)

The BBC Proms celebration of Nielsen's 150th anniversary continues, with a performance of the Second Symphony by his compatriots from the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. Subtitled 'The Four Temperaments', the symphony is an arc of contrasting moods and textures - the 'Temperaments' of the subtitle are the four 'Humours' of Greco-Roman medicine; the building blocks of emotional and physical well-being: Choleric, Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Sanguine.
Nielsen's choral works are less often performed. This Prom offers the chance to experience the luminescent beauty of Hymnus amoris, inspired by a Titian painting, and the Three Motets that pay homage to Renaissance polyphony.
And Danish-Israeli violinist Nikolaj Znaider performs the ever-popular Brahms Violin Concerto, with its warmly romantic central movement and dizzying, gypsy dance-inspired finale.

Mitsuko Uchida makes a welcome return to the Proms for Schoenberg's rarely heard Piano Concerto. It's a work whose 12-tone abstraction is tempered by intriguing autobiographical suggestions - 'Life was so easy', 'Suddenly hatred broke out' - scribbled on the original manuscript. Autobiography is also at the fore in Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony. Composed in 1943, at a particularly dark moment for Russia in the war, the work is a fragile statement of hope that the composer himself summarised as: 'All that is dark and oppressive will disappear; all that is beautiful will triumph.'.

Matthew Sweet presents a special 'live documentary' exploring First World War popular culture - from music hall to movies, theatre to night clubs and drugs - recorded before an audience at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios, in the style of a music hall evening.

On the Bill:

How did Britain's touring trick-cyclists cope with the loss of their male colleagues to the Western Front?

What could you see at the movies at Christmas?

How did boredom in the trenches become the theme of a hit stage play?

What activity, first banned during the war, linked aristocrats and actresses, movie stars and prostitutes?

And what did audiences make of all this?

Find out as Matthew leads an evening of interviews, discussions and 100-year-old jokes with historians Fern Riddell, Ian Christie, Helen Brooks and Marek Kohn.

With piano accompaniment and contributions from Neil Brand, and song and play extracts performed by Ian Conningham and Hannah Genesius of the BBC Radio Drama Company.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b03ncng0)
Cities on the Brink

London

Stepping back in time, BBC News correspondents present a personal perspective on principal cities of the major European powers that fought the First World War. In this Essay, Emma Jane Kirby considers the capital of the largest contemporary modern maritime empire: London.

To today's listeners some of Londoners' concerns a century ago will seem extraordinarily familiar. Complaints about the Tube were as frequent and heartfelt then as they are today. To try and divert travellers from their misery, Macdonald Gill - the brother of sculptor and designer Eric Gill - was commissioned to produce a "Wonderground" map. It was intended to amuse them as they waited for their trains which were infrequent, often dirty and overcrowded.

The map's whimsical illustrations - together with Cockney asides put in the mouths of some of the invented characters - captured the city's above-ground, pre-war character. It evoked the zeitgeist which George Bernard Shaw simultaneously reflected on stage in "Pygmalion" - and led to a subsequent commission to design a theatreland map during the First World War.

Emma Jane Kirby considers the idea of Britain which London was presenting to both the wider world and Britons themselves, and she assesses how far these attitudes still resonate today.

Producer Simon Coates.
