SAT 22:00 Between the Ears (b046cpvb)
Dear Mr Eliot: When Groucho Met Tom

Lenny Henry stars in a musical fantasy written by Jakko M Jakszyk and Lenny Henry, woven round the real-life 1964 dinner encounter between the greatest poet in the English language of the twentieth century, TS Eliot and the legendary star of A Night at the Opera, Duck Soup and Horse Feathers, Groucho Marx.

Almost exactly fifty years after the meeting in early June 1964, Radio 3's adventurous feature series Between the Ears brings the moment to life with the aid of Groucho Marx and TS Eliot's exchange of letters. They'd been pen-pals since 1961, had swapped signed photographs - Eliot particular that Groucho send him a cigar-toting portrait - and compared lifestories. Eliot hung his Groucho picture between his portraits of WB Yeats and French poet Paul Valery - a place of great honour, according to Craig Raine, celebrated poet himself and biographer of Eliot, who also appears in the programme.

With Lenny Henry taking the role of Groucho, Jakko Jakszyk has woven a delicate vocal and instrumental score around the letters, while he and Lenny together speculate about the nature of the men's seemlingly unlikely passion for each other's work.

After a number of failed arrangements, in June 1964, a car arrives at the Savoy to collect Groucho and his wife to take them the short distance to Eliot's home for the much-awaited dinner. Yet such is the nature of celebrity that when Groucho quoted lines from Eliot's The Wasteland back to him, he was uninterested, and Groucho, in turn, was unable to recall the scene from Duck Soup that Eliot particularly loved. They parted, disappointed and a little dejected. Yet, nine months later, on learning of the poet's death, Marx wrote: "he was a nice man, the best epitaph any man can have...".

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b04mb3k5)
Kika Markham

Michael Berkeley's guest is the actor Kika Markham, widow of Corin Redgrave.

'Actors by their nature are curious, fickle, insecure people: flirts. They should not live together.' So says Kika Markham; but she didn't follow her own advice; instead she fell in love with the actor Corin Redgrave - they were together for 33 years until his death in 2010.

Kika's own career began in the 1960s; she made her name in a series of television films, directed by Ken Loach, Dennis Potter, and then, for the cinema, by Francois Truffaut. Now in her early seventies, Kika Markham is still on television, playing the mother of Mr Selfridge in the successful ITV period drama.

In 'Private Passions' she talks to Michael Berkeley about the central role of music in her life. She remembers working with Francois Truffaut, and falling in love with him - against all advice. She chooses music by the French composer who wrote soundtracks for many of Truffaut's films, Georges Delerue.

But it's her marriage to Corin Redgrave that forms the heart of the programme. She talks movingly about living with Corin during the final years of his life, after he suffered a brain injury and lost a great deal of memory. There were huge challenges for them both. And one of the losses, at first, was music - he could not bear to listen. But there came a moment when Kika sat at the piano, and Corin responded to her playing.

Her choices include Beethoven's 'Spring' Violin Sonata, in which she used to accompany her father, the actor David Markham; a song from 'Guys and Dolls'; and the love duet from Handel's 'Rodelinda'.

Producer: Elizabeth Burke

A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b05w7r5k)
Contemporary Art and the Church

Inspired by the Vatican's new initiative to have its own pavilion at the world's greatest contemporary art show, the Venice Biennale, Fiona Shaw travelled to Rome to meet Gianfranco Ravasi, the Cardinal pushing to reignite the Holy See's relationship with new art.

With recordings from the 56th Venice Biennale 2015 (when this programme was first broadcast).

Since the big bust up with contemporary art at the beginning of the 20th century; the so-called "evil" force of Modernism that Pope Pius X believed "led to the annihilation of all religion", the Christian church has been a cautious commissioner of contemporary art. But a voice from within, that of Ravasi, President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, is set to end the stand-off.

Fiona hears Ravasi's passion to reinstate "the marriage between art and faith".

Ravasi has said, "There is an insoluble problem in the coexistence of art and religion and faith, but there's no need for the Catholic Church to retreat and lose contact with the contemporary art world by remaining stuck in the "reliable" neo-Gothic, neo-Romantic, neo-Classical styles that are perfectly coherent with religion...It's time to grow our relationship with the creative artists and creative energy of the artist... "

The Anglican church of St-Martin-in-the-Fields has been reaching out to contemporary artists for a decade while Canon Mark Oakley at St Paul's Cathedral in London is equally committed, recently commissioning American video artist Bill Viola to create Messenger for the cathedral.

Artists Cornelia Parker and Dorothy Cross discuss the inspiration of Christian stories and iconography in their own work and reflect on the contradiction of contemporary art and the Church, given that art sets out to ask questions, while the Church exists to console, to answer questions.

First broadcast in May 2015.

SUN 22:00 Drama on 3 (b01rftt4)
Lungs

A couple are grappling with a dilemma. Should they bring a baby into a world full of uncertainties and anxieties? Duncan Macmillan's raw but funny love story was first produced by Paines Plough and Sheffield Theatres.
The play is performed by Kate O'Flynn and Alistair Cope and directed by Richard Wilson.
Produced for radio by Toby Swift

Lungs was nominated for Best New Play in the Theatre Awards UK in 2012 and subsequently won Best New Play in the 'Offies', the awards for independent theatres in London. Co-produced by Paines Plough, the award-winning touring theatre company specialising exclusively in new plays, and Sheffield Theatres, Lungs was first performed at the Sheffield Crucible as part of the Roundabout season in 2011. The Old Vic's 2019 production was due to open in New York in March this year.

Celebrated actor and director Richard Wilson has been responsible for both the theatre and radio incarnations of this production.

"Richard Wilson's production matches the thrillingly fluid structure of the piece, and Macmillan's script - all nervy half lines and brittle fragments - is astonishingly assured in the way it captures the uncertainty and neuroticism of a pair who seek reassurance that they are 'good people'."
Lyn Gardner, The Guardian.

In a special edition of Free Thinking, Matthew Sweet talks to Buchan's biographer Andrew Lownie and Buchan scholars Dr Michael Redley and Dr Kate Macdonald about the connections between Buchan's own war experience and The Thirty-Nine Steps, and to Professors Elleke Boehmer and Terence Ranger about how ideas about empire and adventure play out in the novel.

MON 23:00 Jazz on 3 (b05w7tf7)
Joe Lovano Village Rhythms Band

A second chance to hear American saxophonist Joe Lovano and his Village Rhythms Band explore the links between West African music and jazz in concert at Ronnie Scott's in London.

In a career spanning nearly four decades, Lovano's vast catalogue of releases on Blue Note Records as well as time spent with John Scofield, Paul Motian and Saxophone Summit has cemented him a reputation as one of the leading names in the post-bop tradition. However a trip to Lagos, Nigeria in 1981 also spawned a different musical fascination that had a lasting effect on his career. It was there that he met and jammed with afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti - an experience that over 30 years on forms the inspiration for his Village Rhythms Band, a project that explores the pulsing groove of Africa alongside Lovano's own rich history as an improviser.

Here in concert at Ronnie Scott's the saxophonist is joined by a group of master groove players, featuring guitarist Liberty Ellman, bassist Michael Olatuja, drummer Otis Brown III and Senegalese percussionist Abdou Mboup.

Philharmonia Orchestra - Debussy, Messiaen

The Philharmonia Orchestra continues its Paris The City of Light Season with masterpieces by Debussy and Messiaen. The programme begins with an atmospheric three-minute work for solo flute before solo singers, a female chorus and orchestra perform Debussy's setting of the Pre-Raphaelite, poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti's The Blessèd Damozel. This ravishing early work by Debussy was written when, like most of his contemporaries, Debussy had fallen under the spell of Wagner as the blessed damozel yearns for fulfilment of love in death. And the spirit of Wagner also lies at the heart of the intoxicating world of Messiaen's gargantuan Turangalîla, "A love song and hymn of joy, time, movement, rhythm, life, and death".

Lopa Kothari presents a special edition from the Hay Festival in Powys featuring a live set from Malian desert blues band Tinariwen and support from BBC Introducing talent Maelog.

Tinariwen have for a decade been one of Mali's leading bands, their songs telling the stories of nomadic life in the Sahara, as well as highlighting current political concerns. This concert celebrates Hay's links with Timbuktu, once Tinariwen's home city, but since the violence of 2012-13 they have not been able to return there. Support band Maelog are a Welsh-Galician roots collective whose uplifting songs feature traditional pipes from both shores with an array of strings and percussion.
