Tim Rice

Tim Rice has written the lyrics for some of the most successful musicals of our generation: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat ... Jesus Christ Superstar ... Evita ... For 45 years he has been creating hit songs, collaborating first and famously with Andrew Lloyd Webber, then with Abba, Elton John, Freddy Mercury and Madonna. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, thanks to the success of his songs in Disney movies The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. A three-time Oscar winner, he has been knighted for services to music.

In Private Passions, he talks to Michael Berkeley about the process of lyric-writing, about why it's an extraordinary experience to work with Elton John, and about what it is that makes a successful song lyric. He also reveals that his early ambition was to be a pop star, and that he started out as a singer - in fact, he recorded a single.

Music choices include a satirical operetta by Offenbach, Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Vaughan Williams's London Symphony, The Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius, Malcolm Arnold's Peterloo Overture and Britten's arrangement of the folk song The Plough Boy. And Tim Rice ends by revealing which is his favourite musical of all - music his father introduced him to as a boy: My Fair Lady.

SUN 22:00 Drama on 3 (b00nkx97)
The Lady from the Sea

By Henrik Ibsen
Adapted for radio by Frank McGuinness

A translation of Ibsen's sensuous and erotic play The Lady From The Sea adapted by Frank McGuinness and starring Lia Williams and Hugh Bonneville.

Needing financial security, Ellida Wangel has settled for a life as second wife to a dull, provincial doctor and is stepmother to his two resentful daughters. However, she is still spiritually possessed by the mysterious Stranger, a former sailor-lover, and she is left with a desperate yearning for the sea; the promise and ecstasy of the unknown. When this figure, a blatant representation of unrepressed sexuality, returns to claim her, it forces a crisis in her sterile marriage. This startling arrival stirs her desires and lures her back to the water's edge where she must confront both the past and a desire for the freedom that could destroy her.

McGuinness poses the question is it better to suffocate on dry land or drown in the freedom of the sea? The radio is an ideal medium to explore this notion with a soundscape that depicts in the mind the vast ocean beyond that is waiting to spirit Ellida away. The surprising ending leaves the listener with a warm sense of hope and well-being.

Directed by Hannah Eidinow

A Catherine Bailey Production

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Young Artists Day - A Child Prodigy

As part of Young Artists Day on Radio 3, Martin James Bartlett, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014, joins Donald Macleod to explore the early life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, discuss life as a young pianist, and also perform in the studio part of Mozart's Piano Sonata in F major K332.

He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. From his early beginnings in Salzburg as a child prodigy, being paraded by his father around Europe performing for kings and queens, and up until his early death in Vienna, Mozart was a prodigious composer in many genres including chamber music and opera. It was his talent as a pianist that really had audiences speechless in Vienna. He organised subscription concerts in the Auergarten, arriving on stage in a succession of fancy coats, and then proceeded to amaze his listeners with his latest piano concertos. This week Donald Macleod focuses each day on one of Mozart's piano concertos, and the period in which it was composed.

Nannerl said of her brother Wolfgang, that he had to be restricted from composing or practicing the keyboard at all hours. The child Mozart was a prodigy, and was keen to show off his talents. His father Leopold took Nannerl and Wolfgang on a number of trips around Europe, where they performed for the nobility and royalty. Mozart's main instrument was the harpsichord, but he also took to the violin. One of his first works to appear in print was his sonata for keyboard with violin accompaniment in C major K6.

Leopold described his son as a miracle which God caused to be born in Salzburg. However Leopold realised that Salzburg was too small a place to restrict the talents of his prodigy son, so he made sure Mozart's abilities were recognised far and wide. It was whilst on tour in London that Mozart composed his early Symphony No 4 in D major.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b05sy53p)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Battles with Authority

He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Relations between the Archbishop of Salzburg and one of his employees, young Mozart, were not going well. The Archbishop found Mozart insubordinate and rebellious, and forbade him to compose any further symphonies. Instead Wolfgang was expected to regularly churn out suitable entertainment music for his employer including serenades, marches, and divertimenti, including his Divertimento in F major No 10 K247.

Mozart however pushed against the boundaries where he could, including writing a series of violin concertos. He also had the opportunity to compose much liturgical music including his Litaniae de venerabili altaris sacramento K243. It was however for a visiting French pianist that Mozart composed the first of his great piano concertos, No 9 in E flat major K271. He wrote this work in the month that he turned twenty-one, and there was a sense of dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra, which was quite new for listeners at that time.

TUE 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b05sy57y)
Glasgow RCS - Poulenc

Episode 1

Michael Collins and friends begin a week's celebration of the chamber works of Poulenc at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow. The, at times mournful, sonata for clarinet is a late work written for Benny Goodman and dedicated to his friend, the composer Honegger. The sextet for piano and woodwind is quite clearly in the neoclassical vein in the mode of Stravinsky and Poulenc makes full use of the instruments' characters to produce his trademark acerbic yet witty finish. Glinka's Trio is by contrast a work of full-blown and theatrical romanticism. He is joined for Poulenc's Sextet by Members of Stevenson Winds, all students at the RCS making their Lunchtime Concert debut.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Wolfgang in Vienna

He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In the early 1780s, Mozart was making his way as a freelance musician in Vienna. He'd finally left the employment of Archbishop Colloredo in Salzburg, and was now dazzling Viennese audiences with his music, such as his the Rondo in D major K382 for piano and orchestra. His latest opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail also had quite an impact in Vienna, even though Emeperor Joseph II was supposed to have said that the music was too beautiful, and "a monstrous many notes".

On top of Mozart's growing popularity, there was another reason for his interest for remaining in Vienna. Wolfgang had previously fallen in love with Aloysia Weber, but she was now married. His affections turned to her younger sister Constanze, whom he then married. During this same period, Mozart's career as a virtuoso performer in Vienna was in the ascent. In partnership with a musician called Martin, he organised and gave a number of subscription performances. At these concerts which often included in the audience the Emperor, Mozart wowed his public with his artistry, performing his latest works including the Concerto No 13 in C major K415 for piano and orchestra.

Glasgow RCS - Poulenc

Episode 2

Former Cardiff Singer of the World winner, Nicole Cabell and pianist Simon Lepper celebrate Poulenc's profound love for the contemporary poets of his day in Paris in this recital from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow.

Banalités' is a group of five songs from various sources of which, 'Hotel' and 'Voyage a Paris' come from a group of short poems also entitled 'Banalités' by the poet Apollinaire which appealed to him because of their silliness. The group of poems are disparate and have no obvious thematic thread however his settings, beautifully illuminate the sometimes obscure texts.

The poetry of Louise de Vilmorin gave Poulenc the opportunity to write specifically for the female voice in 'Fiancailles pour rire'. The cycle begins with the expression which has come to represent the duality of Poulenc's musical personality -) the monk and the street urchin - the sublime alongside the ridiculous. The final song of the cycle, "Fleurs," is one of those grave songs of love and loss that no one else but Poulenc could have composed.

Poulenc's works are contrasted with two well-known song cycles by his older contemporary, Maurice Ravel; the magically evocative song cycle Shéhérazade originally written for soprano (or tenor) and orchestra and his Cinq populaires grecques which were written around the same time for voice and harp to illustrate a lecture his friend Pierre Aubry was giving on Greek folk song. They are all popular songs which range in mood from the carefree 'Tout gai', to the atmospheric and meditative 'La-bas, vers l'eglise'.

Ravel: Shéhérazade

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Dissatisfied in Vienna

He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In 1786, Mozart organised a number of subscription concerts at the Burgtheatre in Vienna. At these events he performed his latest music, including the Concerto No 23 in A major K488 for piano and orchestra. His popularity as a concert pianist had by now peaked, and Mozart was frustrated that he'd still not been able to secure a position at court.

Mozart now cancelled any further subscription concerts, and considered moving to France or England where he thought the prospects were better. The Emperor Joseph II upon hearing the rumours that Mozart was planning to leave, promptly offered him the post of chamber musician. Set against this good fortune, was the tragic news that Mozart's father Leopold had died. Around this time of grief Mozart composed relatively little, but he did complete his opera Don Giovanni K527.

BBC SSO - Janacek, Shostakovich

Live from City Halls Glasgow

Presented by Jamie MacDougall

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Alpesh Chauhan perform an evening of vividly coloured orchestral music.

Shostakovich's final symphony, his 15th, seems to sum up much of the composer's life: but can also be seen as exploring new ground. In the midst of a rich web of musical quotations, references to Rossini and Wagner, sits music which encompasses the classicism of Mozart and Haydn and modernistic rhythmic invention and techniques of serialism. As always with Shostakovich the Symphony treads lightly, and heavily, between the forces of darkness and light.

From 40 years earlier, the composer's first piano concerto seems an altogether brighter affair - bursting with humour and wit. The soloists, pianist Garrick Ohlsson and BBC SSO principal trumpet Mark O'Keeffe, engage in sardonic exchanges in music full of jazz-inflected rhythms, dazzling colours, and trumpet fanfares.

And the concert opens with another fanfare, by a composer who seems to stand outside the usual categories of music history: Janacek. In his Sinfonietta, opening as it does with an unfolding fanfare of 12 trumpets, he creates by means of extremely compressed music a jewel-like work which references military bands and fairy tales as much as the titular musical form.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b05sy53y)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

The Last Piano Concerto

He took the 'land of the clavier', Vienna, by storm, becoming something of a pioneer in composing piano concertos, this week Donald Macleod explores the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

The year 1790 began well with the premiere of Mozart's opera Cosi fan tute. It was a success in Vienna which earned him a fee of two hundred ducats. Unfortunately his finances were not in a good state, and one friend found Mozart and Constanze dancing around their apartment simply to keep warm. Through an act of generosity came a commission, for which Mozart composed his String Quintet in E flat major K614.

1791 would prove to be Mozart's last. It was then that he completed his final piano concerto, No 27 in B flat major K595, although the paper he used to write this work, suggests that this concerto dates from an earlier period. Money remained tight for Mozart, and so he accepted a mysterious commission for a Requiem. In the last hours before his death, Mozart dictated this work to his pupil Süssmayer, and puffed out his cheeks imitating the sound of the timpani passages.

Stephen Layton (conductor)

"When I think of God I can only write joyful music" said Joseph Haydn when he began to write what is generally accepted as his masterpiece. Taking collective inspiration from Genesis, the Psalms and John Milton's epic poem 'Paradise Lost', The Creation is a work of musical invention, a sensational biblical homage to our living planet. It also owes a debt to another great choral composer from the eighteenth century - Handel. Haydn first heard performances of Messiah and israel in Egypt in London in 1791, with a massive chorus and orchestra numbering over 1000 people. The impact was immense, and he immediately remarked to a friend that he should like to write something similar, but was stuck for a libretto. In return the friend thrust a Bible into Haydn's hand and said "begin at the beginning!" The final result gives a lasting impression of uncomplicated joy in the world, from the pen of a 66 year old composer.
