Boulez: Pli selon pli
Yeree Suh (soprano)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Thierry Fischer (conductor)

It's hard to think of a more influential figure in post-war European music than Pierre Boulez. As a composer, conductor, thinker and cultural leader he has interrogated multiple pathways and possibilities in music, and asked the big questions. His relationship with the BBC Symphony Orchestra began in the 1960s, blossomed during his years as Chief Conductor, and went on to sharpen and invigorate the whole British music scene.

Pli selon pli, literally translated as 'fold by fold', is widely regarded as Boulez's seminal masterwork. His distinctive sound world is inspired here by the work of French poet Stéphane Mallarmé. As the five movements develop, Boulez reveals his portrait of Mallarmé. Each setting uses intriguing and different instrumental forces. The BBC Symphony Orchestra is joined by celebrated soprano Yeree Suh.

Boulez's 12 Notations for solo piano were composed in 1945, and in the 1970s and 80s he revisited the set - orchestrating five of them. The BBC Symphony Orchestra opens the concert with these miniatures, affording the listener a thrilling insight into the compositional development of a true provocateur.

This is the third of the three concerts in the BBC Symphony Orchestra's Total Immersion: Pierre Boulez at 90 - day of celebration at the Barbican in London.

SAT 21:30 Between the Ears (b05mq5tg)
Into the Valley

Monument Valley, which straddles the state lines of Arizona & Utah, is a place most of us have seen & never visited or listened to. The 'true West' of John Ford movies and endless car adverts. Mark Burman takes his microphone through the red dust of history with Navajo guide Larry Y. Holiday. Chased by the storm clouds and lightning, theirs is a trip through nature's own movie set.

At the turn of the 20th Century very few outsiders had penetrated its mysterious spaces. Spanish priests, American soldiers and silver hungry prospectors had vied with warring Ute and Navajo Indians amidst the red rock. Then came isolated trading posts and the first flourishings of tourism in the 1920's. American's eager to 'discover' what was still a largely blank space on the map but was firmly part of the Navajo Nation, who had returned to their land of rock and sand after defeat and exile.
Exactly 60 years ago a teenage Pippa Scott made what was then an arduous journey to act in John Ford's The Searchers. In 1955 it was a remote and inaccessible place. No running water, power or telephones but it offered a towering landscape of eroded rock like no other. An ancient place , still home to a small community of Navajo's who eke out a living in a place of deep spiritual significance to them and exercising a powerful pull on all our imaginations via the words of writers like Zane Grey & Willa Cather & the films of John Ford. Lose yourself in the swirling dust.

Robert Cohan

Robert Cohan is the founding father of contemporary dance in Britain. Born in Brooklyn in 1925, he was first struck by the power of dance whilst on leave from serving in France during the Second World War, when he was taken to see a ballet at Sadler's Wells. Back in New York in 1946, a single modern dance class at the Martha Graham studio convinced him of his vocation. He worked with Graham for almost two decades before moving to London in the late sixties, to found what became the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. Cohan defined the style of British contemporary dance with his breadth of vision, challenging physical style and inspirational teaching. And virtually all the major figures in 20th-century choreography have been influenced by Cohan - Siobhan Davies and Richard Alston to name just two.

Ahead of his 90th birthday celebrations at The Place, Robert Cohan talks to Michael Berkeley about the music that's inspired him during his extraordinary career. He movingly recalls his time on active duty in France, including the time when a can of ham and eggs saved his life by deflecting shrapnel. He reveals the sometimes tempestuous reality of working with Martha Graham, and shares his plans for his tenth decade in dance.

He shares his love for Elgar, Vivaldi and Prokofiev, but also celebrates the music of less well known composers Barry Guy, Alan Hovhaness, Jon Keliehor, and Eleanor Alberga.

Produced by Jane Greenwood.

A Loftus Production for BBC Radio 3.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b05mqhb3)
Caucasian Roots

Episode 1

Historian Bettany Hughes follows the trail of the Caucasus in antiquity from the Black sea coast of Ancient Colchis to the shadow of Mount Ararat in Armenia.

In this two-part series, Bettany Hughes travels to the Caucasus, the land that sits on the boundary of Asia and Europe, between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, to unravel its mythologised and pivotal place in Western history. For the Ancient Greeks, the region was home to the Golden Fleece, the Amazons and Prometheus. In the Christian tradition it was thought to be the resting place of Noah's Ark after the flood. In Russian literature it was mythologised by Pushkin, Lermontov and Tolstoy. And in the Europe of the Enlightenment, it crucially became known as the home of the purest members of the white race - hence today's descriptions of white criminal suspects as "Caucasian". Bettany travels to the region to find the roots of these stories and test how far the myths are backed up by reality

The Boy at the Back

By Juan Mayorga.

A psychological drama from one of Spain's most renowned contemporary writers, which recently won a BBC Audio Drama Award for Best Use of Sound.

When 17-year-old Claudio insinuates himself into a classmate's house and begins to write about it as homework, his literary voyeurism soon spirals out of control. Faced with this gifted and unusual pupil, class teacher German is reminded of his own abandoned literary pretensions. Despite his wife's misgivings, he encourages Claudio's artistic ambitions. However, the boy's incursion into the domestic intimacy of his subjects will have unpredictable consequences for both households.

An exploration of the voyeuristic nature of fiction, the exercise of power and the ambiguity at the heart of human relations.

Juan Mayorga's work has been translated into over 25 languages and performed all around the world. He has won numerous prizes including the Spanish National Theatre Award and the Valle-Inclan Prize, and is a five-time winner of a "Max" (Spanish equivalent of an Olivier Award).

Gustav Holst (1874-1934)

Life Before the War, Life Before the Planets

Donald Macleod explores the life and career of the English composer Gustav Holst (1874-1912). Remembered by many as the man who wrote The Planets suite, Holst was much more than that. He was an intriguing character and the composer of a number of individual, compelling works. In Monday's episode, Donald focuses on Holst's childhood in Cheltenham, his studies in London and the friendships he made there. This was followed by his break into teaching, and an enforced trip away which led to a rather controversial composition.

Massenet's Manon

Manon is Massenet's best known and most popular opera, and is based on Prevost's novel L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut. It tells the story of the impulsive Manon, soprano Diana Damrau, who falls in love with the young student des Grieux, sung by tenor Vittorio Grigolo. Manon longs for luxury and excitement, and she foolishly cannot resist when the rich nobleman De Brétigny wants to make her his mistress. Her choice of wealth over love ultimately seals her fate. Diana Damrau sings her first Met performances of Manon, with tenor Vittorio Grigolo as the betrayed lover. The New York Metropolitan Opera Orchestra is conducted by Emmanuel Villaume, in the production by Laurent Pelly.

Sarah Walker on John White

Radio 3 presenter Sarah Walker celebrates a composer whose music has particularly inspired her: 'English Experimentalist' John White - who, as well as being a dedicated opponent of "seriosity" in classical music, is the spitting image of Hollywood actor Jack Nicholson.

This is the first of five editions of The Essay in which Radio 3 classical music presenters celebrate lesser-known composers whose 'secret admirers' they are. Coming up from Tuesday to Friday:
Tom Service on Arnold Bax
Lucie Skeaping on Thomas Ravenscroft
Martin Handley on Malcolm Arnold
Sara Mohr-Pietsch on Hildegard of Bingen.

Troyk-estra

A second chance to hear one of the most talked about British performances of the last few years - the 18-piece ensemble Troyk-estra in performance at the 2013 Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Just as its parent trio Troyka does, the band looks beyond jazz for its inspiration, working rock and electronica into confrontational grooves. And there's still space for Troyka to strut their stuff as a trio within the big band, with Chris Montague on guitar, Kit Downes on keys and Josh Blackmore at the drums.

Presenter: Kevin Le Gendre
Producers: Peggy Sutton & Phil Smith

First broadcast 03/06/2013.

TUE 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b05mrlzd)
Haydn Plus One

Episode 1

Haydn Plus One. A week of music by Haydn linked to other composers opens with Meta4 playing Haydn's String Quartet Op 64 No 2 and Bartok's Quartet No 5. Recorded at LSO St Lukes in London

Haydn: String Quartet in B minor, Op 64 No 2
Bartók: String Quartet No 5

Meta4

Haydn's reputation as a 'composer's composer' may not do full justice to his music's warming mixture of ingenuity, humanity and sheer attractiveness, but it accurately reflects the esteem in which he has always been held by his contemporaries and successors. This concert is the first in a series of four recorded at LSO St Lukes in London, in which compositions by him in genres in which he was a seminal figure are placed alongside works by later composers who also held those genres dear. Of these, it is surely the string quartet that Haydn is most closely identified; one of his later examples is paired here with a masterpiece from perhaps the 20th century's most searching quartet-cycle, Bartók's Fifth.

They are played by the Finnish quartet Meta4, former members of the Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme.

Recorded at LSO St Lukes in London

Haydn: Fantasia in C, HobXVII/4
Haydn: Piano Sonata in G, HobXVI/40
Beethoven: Piano Sonata in F minor, Op 2 No 1
Haydn: Piano Sonata in C, HobXVI/50.

Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

Haydn's reputation as a 'composer's composer' may not do full justice to his music's warming mixture of ingenuity, humanity and sheer attractiveness, but it accurately reflects the esteem in which he has always been held by his contemporaries and successors. This concert is the second in a series of four recorded at LSO St Lukes in London, in which compositions by him in genres in which he was a seminal figure are placed alongside works by later composers who also held those genres dear. Among those genres is the piano sonata; two of Haydn's are heard here, plus a Fantasia, alongside the confident first sonata by Beethoven, dedicated to Haydn, who had once briefly been his teacher.

They are played by Dutch fortepianist Ronald Brautigam.

Peggy Seeger

Philip Dodd talks to one of the icons of what used to be called the counter-culture, Peggy Seeger. Another chance to hear a conversation recorded earlier this year before Peggy Seeger joins the line up of guests performing at Sage Gateshead over Radio 3's Free Thinking Festival this weekend.

Peggy Seeger's voice and career are emblematic of a life lived against the establishment grain. Born in New York in 1935 she first made her name as one of the leaders of the British Folk Revival, and with her partner Ewan MacColl, she helped to create one of the most innovative radio series of the last fifty years, the Radio Ballads, which blended original music, sound effects, and first-person interviews. In the 1950s she had her US passport withdrawn following a visit to China and chose to stay in Europe. It wasn't wholly unexpected. She had long aligned herself with the radical left and was an outspoken champion of feminism - one of her most famous songs being "I'm Gonna Be an Engineer". When official US attitudes softened after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1994 she returned to live in the States, but recently moved back to the United Kingdom and is still recording and releasing albums, including her latest CD Everything Changes.

Thursday's programme focuses on Holst's breakdown and year long retreat in Thaxted, plus his encounters with a pair of notable literary figures of the day: Robert Bridges and Thomas Hardy.

Episode 3

Haydn Plus One. The four-part series of music by Haydn linked to that of other composers continues with the Endellion Quartet playing Haydn's String Quartet in F minor, Op 20 No 5 and Shostakovich's Quartet No 3. Recorded at LSO St Lukes in London

Haydn: String Quartet in F minor, Op 20 No 5
Shostakovich: String Quartet No 3 in A

Endellion Quartet

Haydn's reputation as a 'composer's composer' may not do full justice to his music's warming mixture of ingenuity, humanity and sheer attractiveness, but it accurately reflects the esteem in which he has always been held by his contemporaries and successors. This concert is the third in a series of four recorded at LSO St Lukes in London, in which compositions by him in genres in which he was a seminal figure are placed alongside works by later composers who also held those genres dear. Of these, it is surely the string quartet that Haydn is most closely identified; one of his earlier examples is paired here with a work from one of the 20th century's most important quartet-cycles, Shostakovich's Third.

They are played by the Endellion Quartet.

Thursday Opera Matinee

Rimsky-Korsakov - The Tsar's Bride

Penny Gore presents this week's opera matinee, Rimsky-Korsakov's thrilling 4-act melodrama The Tsar's Bride, recorded live at La Scala last March.

The libretto, by Ilyaa Tyumenev, is a complex, psychological drama, steeped in history and driven by one of the same characters that inspired Eisenstein: Tsar Ivan IV, "Ivan the Terrible." It's 1571 and the Tsar is looking for his third bride. He's assembled some 2000 girls for inspection, but the one he's taken with is Marfa. However, she is already promised in marriage to her childhood sweetheart Ivan and, as if the situation isn't complicated enough, Marfa is also loved by another powerful man, Grigory - one of the Tsar's secret police. It's a love-triangle which has all the makings of catastrophe.

Rimsky-Korsakov brings the story to life with spectacular music, including lively melodies evoking Russian folklore which lighten the mood.

Daniel Barenboim conducts the company premiere of this opera, staged and directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov, and with Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden. The cast includes soprano Olga Peretyatko as Marfa, baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle as the ruthless oprichnik Griaznoy and mezzo-soprano Marina Prudenskaya as Marfa's tragic rival, Lyubasha.

Live from Aberystwyth Arts Centre

Presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Ben Gernon, performs Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony plus trumpet concertos by Haydn and Arutiunian with soloist Philippe Schartz.

Haydn: Trumpet Concerto in E flat
Tchaikovsky: Symphony no.4 in F minor, Op. 36

Philippe Schartz (trumpet)
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Ben Gernon (conductor)

Philippe Schartz, Principal Trumpet with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, takes to the front of the stage as soloist in two great showcase concertos for trumpet. Armenian composer Alexander Arutiunian took advantage of the trumpet to blaze through even the grandest symphonic textures in his 1950 concerto, whilst Haydn worked for the first time with the precursor of the valve trumpet, filling in some of the notes not available on the natural trumpet. Bold brassiness takes us through the rest of the programme with Shostakovich's brilliant fanfare and Tchaikovsky's turbulent 4th Symphony, a mirror of his emotional strife at the time, with blood-curdling brass instruments ominously sounding the theme of Fate. For the composer it represents "the force of destiny which ever prevents our pursuit of happiness from reaching its goal. The exciting young British conductor Ben Gernon (himself an ex-tuba player) directs the orchestra on the first leg of their spring trip around Wales.

FRI 22:00 The Verb (b01ngr7x)
The Q Special

Ian McMillan presents Radio 3's Cabaret of the Word - in this programme he is joined by Toby Litt, Ira Lightman, Leafcutter John and Sharon Olds who will be celebrating the letter Q.

Toby Litt is an acclaimed novelist whose books are named in alphabetical order. It was his idea to celebrate the letter Q on The Verb, and to that end he has been commissioned to write a poem in quatrains almost entirely composed of Q-words.

Sharon Olds is one of the leading voices in US contemporary poetry; her new collection Stag's Leap has just been shortlisted on this side of the Atlantic for the TS Eliot Prize. Sharon reads a poem called Q and explores the significance of the letter Q in Stag's Leap - which details the break-up of her marriage.

Leafcutter John is a musician and artist who has created a Q soundscape especially for The Verb, incorporating samples of many voices saying Q words, Q in morse code and a baby's first Q.

Ira Lightman is a conceptual poet who also makes public art and performance pieces. He explores the Q-ness of the French writer Raymond Queneau for The Verb.

This programme was first broadcast on 26th October 2012.
