Featured scores includes "Thelma and Louise", "Gone With The Wind", "Silence Of The Lambs", "The Portrait Of A Lady", "The Princess Mononoke", "Orlando", "Annie Get Your Gun". The Classic Score of the Week is Alfred Newman's "All About Eve".

SAT 18:00 Jazz Line-Up (b051ztj7)
The Blue Notes

Claire Martin presents the second instalment of a special concert paying tribute to legendary South African group The Blue Notes, featuring a 2014 incarnation of the group led by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, recorded on the Jazz Line-Up stage at last year's London Jazz Festival.

The original line-up of the legendary band boasted many of Africa's influential and leading lights including Chris McGregor on piano, Mongezi Feza on trumpet, Dudu Pukwana on alto saxophone, Nikele Moyake on tenor saxophone, Johnny Dyani on bass, and Louis Moholo on drums. The majority of these musicians and others such as Julian Bahula, Mervyn Africa, Ernest Mothle, Bheki Mseleku sought refuge and political asylum in Britain to escape the injustice of the apartheid system.
The 2014 version of the band features Bokani Dyer (Piano), Soweto Kinch (Alto Saxophone), Percy Pursglove (Trumpet) , Karl Rasheed (Bass), Mark Sanders (Drums) and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Jazz Artist Shabaka Hutchings (Tenor Saxophone) who was appointed the role of musical director for the project by original Blue Notes drummer Louis Moholo Moholo.

SAT 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert (b052hw6d)
BBC Philharmonic - Elgar, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky

Live from the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester

Presented by Christopher Cook

The BBC Philharmonic and Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena perform music by Elgar, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky.

Elgar: Serenade for strings
Dvorak: Cello Concerto in B minor

8.25 Interval Music

8.45
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 6 'Pathétique'

Johannes Moser (cello)
BBC Philharmonic
Juanjo Mena (conductor)

In music that was of particularly strong significance to each of these composers we hear their clear personal voices. Elgar referred to his Serenade for Strings as his favourite work and he gave it to his wife on their wedding anniversary. While writing his last large-scale orchestral piece, his full-blooded Cello Concerto, Dvorak had the illness and the death of his beloved sister-in-law, to whom he had been close before her marriage, in the forefront of his mind. In Tchaikovsky's final work his relationship with his own mortality inspires a work of extraordinary power and depth.

SAT 21:45 Between the Ears (b05283j4)
School for Harmonicas

Imagine a town of harmonica players; sounds a bit surreal?

Now 'Between the Ears' gives listeners a chance to hear the harmonica as a truly virtuoso instrument, always an instrument of the people - portable, affordable and playable. Acclaimed poet Kim Addonizio turns harmonica student, heading to blues school with pen, mouth, and a stack of harps at the ready, in search of the sweetest sounds.

Trossingen in Germany may be the world capital of harmonicas. Every street echoes to the sound of the harp, and even the downtown hotel is part of the old Hohner Factory. This is where you will find the true aficionados, the hard-core addicts, who come to have lessons with the top players.

Kim learns riffs from the world’s top ‘harp’ teachers, Dave Barrett, Steve Baker and Joe Filisko - who customizes harps for such as Neil Young, blues great Kim Wilson, and jazz phenomenon Howard Levy, and who she wants to persuade to accompany her on his magical harp.

She also dreams of being the first woman to jam on stage at the Blues conference... so will her dreams become reality?

SUN 13:00 Private Passions (b051zvvn)
Anna Meredith

Michael Berkeley's guest is Anna Meredith - one of Britain's leading composers coming up from the younger generation. She is hard to label as she composes and performs both acoustic and electronic music, and her work has been performed everywhere from the Last Night of the Proms to flashmob events in the M6 services. She studied at York University and the Royal College of Music, and alongside numerous awards, she's been Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and a judge for BBC Young Musician of the Year. She was recently commissioned as part of the BBC Ten Pieces initiative to write a piece which will be played to primary school children across the country, to introduce them to classical music.

In Private Passions she talks to Michael Berkeley about the music which inspires her, and explains why composers now still have a lot to learn from 16th century madrigals. She celebrates Sibelius and his extraordinary 5th symphony, and Holst's music for wind band, unfashionable though it may be. She introduces work by a new generation of composers too: Emily Hall, Richard Ayres and Owen Pallet. And she reveals why she goes into schools to inspire teenage girls by playing Bjork, and reflects on what it means to be a woman composer now:

My music tends to be quite bombastic, and I've heard people say "It doesn't sound very female", or "What's a nice girl like you doing writing music like that?" When I'm doing electronic music I do all the computer stuff myself and sometimes there's an assumption that there must be a guy somewhere behind the scenes working all the software magic...

A Loftus production for BBC Radio 3
Produced by Elizabeth Burke.

International Women's Day: Composer Profile - Barbara Strozzi

International Women's Day, celebrating female composers: Barbara Strozzi

Lucie Skeaping is joined by Laurie Stras to profile the life and music of the prolific 17th Century Venetian composer and singer Barbara Strozzi. @bbcradio3 #womensday

Born in 1617, the daughter of a servant girl Barbara was brought up and educated by the poet Giulio Strozzi, who was probably her father. She first tasted fame at her father's 'Academies' in Venice for her 'bold and graceful manner' before going on to publish eight volumes of music, mostly for solo voice. But, despite her remarkable achievements as a singer and composer, she appears to have died in poverty around 1677.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b051zxlh)
From Convent to Concert Hall

Dr Kate Kennedy appraises four female string players from different eras and locations who were all pioneering in their own lifetimes, assessing their impact in the concert hall. In the 18th century, female performers were gaining acceptance and even prominence across Europe as singers in choirs and on the opera stage. But as instrumentalists, progress on the concert platform was slower.

The story begins in Venice, where the four enlightened Ospedale institutions gave disadvantaged girls an education, especially in music. Although many of the students at the Ospedale della Pietà or the Ospedale della Mendicanti gave up their musical studies on marrying or on entering a convent, one notable performer, Maddalena Lombardini, born in 1745, gained prominence as a soloist and as a composer. In the 19th century a young French cellist, Lise Cristianti, caught the attention of Mendelssohn whilst giving concerts in Leipzig, aged 18. She subsequently undertook a perilous journey across Siberia, performing across the region. Another cellist to reach prominence at the start of the 20th century, Beatrice Harrison, is still known today for her recordings outdoors with nightingales, but she also had a serious professional career, as Elgar's preferred interpreter of his cello concerto, and as inspiration for Delius. The final candidate is Rebecca Clarke, whose reputation as a composer has grown since her death, but she was also a prominent viola player.

Motif, Tricko

Norwegian sextet Motif in concert, plus Kit Downes and Lucy Railton's Tricko

Led by bassist Ole Morten Vågan, Motif have been shaping their sound over the last decade, bringing together some of the best players from the young Norwegian improvising scene. Vågan's intense writing allows pieces to spiral from a central phrase or idea, whether it be an urgent groove, a melodic exploration or propulsive free-play. The bassist is joined by Håkon Mjaset Johansen on drums and Håvard Wilk on piano in a powerhouse rhythm section, while the rich frontline features the paired clarinets of Atle Nymo and Michael Thieke alongside trumpeter Eivind Lønning.

The concert also featured a set from Tricko - pianist Kit Downes and cellist Lucy Railton. Their thoughtfully crafted pieces journey through stately themes, brooding melodicism and beautiful, slowly evolving soundscapes.

Five Under 35 - Contemporary British Women Composers

Continuing BBC Radio 3's celebration of female composers for International Women's Day, Donald Macleod speaks to five members of a new generation of British composers about their work? As they discuss the issue of women in music from a contemporary perspective. Featuring music by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Dobrinka Tabakova, Hannah Kendall, Anna Clyne and Charlotte Bray. Join the conversation online by tweeting @bbcradio3 with the hashtag #womensday.

In today's episode, Donald interviews the British-Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova (1980-), whose music shimmers with "glowing tonal harmonies and grand sweeping gestures", according to the leading magazine The Strad. Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Dobrinka Tabakova moved to the UK at the age of 11. Her lushly tonal, often highly Romantic music has been praised by figures as eclectic as John Adams, Iannis Xenakis and Alexander Goehr - and questions what it really means to be 'radical' in 2015.

The Age of Earthquakes, Maths in Films

Douglas Coupland, Shumon Basar and Hans Ulrich Obrist explain the Extreme Present to Matthew Sweet. Their co-authored book The Age of Earthquakes builds on Marshall McLuhan's analysis of how technology influenced culture in the 1960s and is described as "a new history of how we are feeling in the world today when the future seems to be happening much faster than we ever thought. When your life stops feeling like a story, you stop feeling like an individual and technology remembers everything you don't have to".

Also, maths and mathematicians in film. Ahead of the release of Morgan Matthews' comedy drama X+Y which focuses on a socially awkward teenage maths prodigy, mathematician Hannah Fry and film critic Kevin Jackson explore the ways in which number-crunching geniuses have been depicted on the big screen.

Ireland captured his sudden infatuation for the pianist Helen Perkin in his sparkling Piano Concerto, and it's easy to hear how the pianist inspired the composer to heights of brilliance, virtuosity and flair. Alongside the Concerto, Andrew Manze conducts the emotional outpouring that is William Walton's First Symphony and Elgar's poised Introduction and Allegro for strings.

His latest novel, The Last Word, the story of an ageing Indian writer and his young biographer, returns to themes which have interested Kureishi since the start of his career - race, sex and desire, class and humour. He discusses with Philip why immigrants are seen as an eternal spectre Britain, changing views of sexuality and the shadow of mortality.

Bartok: Duke Bluebeard's Castle

The light and the shadowy side of fairy tales: Ravel's Mother Goose ballet suite conjures up enchanted stories with happy-ever-after endings, while, in Duke Bluebeard's Castle, Bartók mines the darkest reaches of psychology in his enthralling operatic masterpiece. American mezzo Michelle DeYoung plays the innocent Judith, inexorably and willingly led towards entombment.

Swedish composer Albert Schnelzer made a big impact at the 2010 Proms with his A Freak at Burbank, which re-imagined Haydn in an American suburb. His new concert-opener -Tales from Suburbia - promises to make a splash: 'an exceptional flair for orchestral virtuosity ... - an important new composer, no question'. The Guardian.

Michelle DeYoung (mezzo-soprano - Judith)
Gabor Bretz (baritone - Duke Bluebeard)
BBC Symphony Orchestra
Kirill Karabits (conductor).
