SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b04vczfc)
Vivienne Westwood

Dame Vivienne Westwood needs little introduction; her name and her brand are known across the world. Indeed, in the Far East she's made it into the top ten most recognised global brands, with Coca Cola and Disney. Her fame rests not just on her fashion designs, daring and sexy and original as they are: because Vivienne Westwood is also the co-creator, with Malcolm McLaren, of punk - that revolution of music and fashion that changed Britain back in the mid-70s.

What is less well known is her passion for classical music, and for going to concerts - 'it's brilliant, it's only £10, much cheaper than going out to a discotheque'. In Private Passions, she talks to Michael Berkeley about the music which has inspired her creations, and about creating costumes for the opera. She describes the hardship of her early days as a designer, when she was so short of money that she lived in a caravan with her two small sons. She remembers the heady days of punk, and marching up and down King's Road dressed entirely in rubber. ('Rubberwear for the office' was the concept, and it was very comfortable, she claims.) She tells the story of how she met her husband Andreas, who now designs with her, thanks to a cow. And why there is nothing more attractive than a man in a suit. Especially when he's bending over.

Her music choices include the climactic orgy from Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe; ballet music by Stravinsky and Milhaud; Bach's St John Passion; Handel's Alcina; Larry Williams; and Musorgsky's Pictures at An Exhibition: 'If there are any punks out there - just listen to this - it will blow your mind!'

Produced by Elizabeth Burke.

SUN 22:00 Drama on 3 (b04vczmc)
Paines Plough at 40

An evening of new drama to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Paines Plough. James Grieve and George Perrin, joint Artistic Directors of Paines Plough, introduce three short plays by Nick Payne, Robin French and Katie Douglas, recorded in front of an audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.

Paines Plough was formed in 1974 over a pint of Paines bitter in the Plough pub. Since then they have produced more than 130 new productions by world renowned playwrights and have toured those plays to hundreds of places from Manchester to Moscow to Maidenhead.

All three plays are performed by the same core ensemble: Susan Brown, Karl Johnson, Clare Corbett, Bryan Dick, with additional support from Roslyn Hill and Monty d'Inverno.

The first play, Nick Payne's Happiness, focuses on married couple Karen and Richard as they attempt to remedy their respective unhappiness with a variety of far-flung undertakings. But can they find a solution that is closer to home?

In the strange universe of Robin French's Silver Drills, the fortunes of Humboldt Zoo are about to be turned around by the arrival of mysterious and endangered animals - the Silver Drills.

In the final play, Katie Douglas's Reunion, Gary has invited his family around for lunch. However, the reunion turns out to be a far cry from what he was expecting.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b04vd0tz)
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

The Pieta

Donald Macleod introduces the life and music of the Venetian priest, feted in his lifetime as both composer and violinist, yet destined to die in obscurity in faraway Vienna.

Antonio Vivaldi's name is now inextricably linked with Venice's charitable institution the Ospedale della Pietà, where the female residents benefitted from his skills as composer, violinist, teacher and impresario. As a boy, Vivaldi was taught by his father, inheriting both his red hair and his skill as a violinist. Young Antonio was soon to be seen deputising for his father in the orchestra of the Basilica of St. Mark's. As the eldest son in a poor family, Vivaldi was destined for the priesthood, and he was ordained in 1703. Combining the careers of musician and priest wasn't unusual at the time, and that same year Vivaldi was appointed violin teacher at the Pietà. Donald Macleod presents a selection of music Vivaldi wrote specially tailored to display the dazzling array of talents offered by the girls of the Pietà including an ensemble concerto for two recorders, two oboes, bassoon and two violins. He also introduces a concerto from Vivaldi's op.3 - the first collection to make his name outside Italy and regarded as the most influential music publication of the first half of the eighteenth century.

MON 16:30 Words and Music (b01k9t7h)
Eminently Victorian

Eminently Victorian is a kind of stumble or headlong trip into the kaleidoscopic world of the 19th century. It's a world which embraces Elgar, Mendelssohn and William Sterndale Bennett as easily as George Eliot, Oscar Wilde and Robert Browning. At once familiar and strange it still seems seems utterly contemporary. Anna Maxwell Martin and Rory Kinnear conjure up Gwendolen Harleth and Gunga Din amongst others and the music whirls from the vernacular of Gilbert and Sullivan to Samuel Coleridge Taylor's The Song of Hiawatha.

Producer: Zahid Warley.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b04vd1ht)
I've Never Told Anyone This Before

Tod Wodicka - The Reluctant Shaman

The first in a series of essays from writers who explore the hidden stories of their lives that they've not yet set to paper.

Some parents and grandparents may be anticipating struggles with getting small children to sleep in the heady days approaching Christmas. In 'The Reluctant Shaman' the acclaimed novelist shares his history of terrifying night-time experiences and how for years he suffered in fear and isolation. In Siberia there is a tradition, albeit a fading one, of young boys who suffer from night terrors being taken aside from the community and trained as shamans. They are believed to have a more fluid relationship with the spirit world and our so-called 'real world'. In a spirit of sceptical inquiry Tod Wodicka tells the story of how he discovered he was not alone in experiencing episodes of being trapped inside his own body, awake, and convinced that the presence in the room is an evil one intent on doing harm. Fuseli's famous engraving of The Nightmare recalls for him some of the strange feelings of powerlessness and horror as a weight presses down on his chest. Where do these episodes come from and what are their implications for a 21st-century agnostic ?

Tod Wodicka was born in Glens Falls, NY in 1976. He graduated from the University of Manchester, UK. He is currently living in Berlin and working on his second novel, The Household Spirit. All Shall Be Well; And All Shall Be Well; And All Manner of Things Shall Be Well is his first novel, both published by Jonathan Cape.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b04vd5wk)
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Opera Impresario

Donald Macleod introduces music from two of Vivaldi's earliest successful operatic productions which opened up new job opportunities outside of Venice.
Vivaldi took over the running of the small Venetian theatre of San Angelo, firstly producing works by other composers, but in the 1714-15 season, he made his own operatic debut in Venice there. Vivaldi was soon in demand at another theatre, placing him in a very powerful position within Venice's operatic life. New opportunities opened up beyond the shores of the Republic and, in 1718, Vivaldi travelled to the court of Mantua where he took up the position of music director. There he was able to take full advantage of the court orchestra with its rich variety of instruments.

Donald Macleod introduces music from two of the operas which helped establish his reputation, a dramatic solo cantata typical of the kind of thing Vivaldi composed for singers to perform during the long operatic off-season, and an example of a chamber concerto that may have been intended for the virtuoso members of the Mantuan court orchestra.

Prom 56: Holst, Schoenberg, Scriabin

The London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski from this year's BBC Proms. 20th-century music takes three contrasting paths here in masterpieces by Holst, Schoenberg and Scriabin.

Holst: The Planets
Schoenberg: Five Orchestral Pieces
Scriabin: Prometheus - The Poem of Fire

Alexander Toradze (piano)
London Philharmonic Choir
London Philharmonic Orchestra
Vladimir Jurowski (conductor)

Tuneful good humour and vivid characterisation see the century at its most approachable in Holst's well-loved The Planets. Scriabin's Prometheus is more eccentric - scored for piano, 'colour organ' and orchestra. This performance of it includes the optional part for choir and responds to the composer's imaginative ideas on colour.

Premiered at the Proms in 1912, Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces take tonality to the limit, anticipating the composer's later development of serialism.

Concert originally broadcast 28/08/2014.

The legendary Pet Shop Boys made their Proms debut in this Late Night Prom, joining the BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra for the world premiere of A Man from the Future, a new piece for electronics, orchestra, choir and narrator.
The piece is inspired by the life and work of Alan Turing, who helped break the German Enigma code during the Second World War and formulated the concept of the digital computer, but was prosecuted in 1952 for his homosexuality, receiving a posthumous pardon last year. It comes as a timely homage, 60 years after Turing's death.
The concert also includes new orchestral arrangements by renowned film composer Angelo Badalamenti of five Pet Shop Boys songs chosen by Tennant and Lowe, in which they are joined by Chrissie Hynde, as well as the exuberant overture to their 1991 tour, Performance, heard live in concert for the first time.

Concert originally broadcast 23/07/2014.

Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Acceptance in Rome

Donald Macleod introduces music associated with a devoted follower of Vivaldi's from Dresden, and influential patrons in Rome.

As Vivaldi's reputation began to spread across Europe, musicians from far and wide made a point of visiting him in Venice. One such was Johann Georg Pisendel, a distinguished violinist from the Dresden court who studied with Vivaldi. On his return he ensured Vivaldi's concertos formed a central role in the repertoire of the court orchestra. Offers of work came in from elsewhere, including Rome, and Vivaldi soon found himself on the invitation lists of some of the most powerful and influential princes and cardinals, including the music-loving Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni. Donald Macleod introduces a sonata from a collection owned by the Cardinal, an excerpt from an opera premiered in Rome and a concerto dedicated to the faithful Pisendel's employer at the court of Dresden.

WED 17:45 New Generation Artists (b04vj87p)
Clemency Burton-Hill continues her week series showcasing the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists.

As part of the BBC's commitment to developing and nurturing young talent, BBC Radio 3 launched its New Generation Artists scheme in the autumn of 1999. Now well into its second decade, the scheme has acquired the reputation of being a world leader for young artists. Every autumn six to seven artists or groups who are beginning to make a mark on the international music scene are invited to join. Opportunities include concerts in London and around the UK, appearances and recordings with the BBC Orchestras, special studio recordings for Radio 3, and, for some, appearances at the Proms.

British mezzo-soprano, Kitty Whately was the winner Kathleen Ferrier Award 2011 and the 59th Royal Over-seas League Award for Singers and she is joined by the leading French violist, Lise Berthaud to perform Brahms's Geistliches Wiegenlied especially for Christmas Eve. Esther Yoo first came to international attention in 2010 when, aged 16, she became the youngest prize winner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition. In 2012, the American-Korean violinist was also one of the youngest ever prize winners of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. The Armida Quartet was founded in the summer of 2006 and in September 2012 the Armida Quartet achieved first prize and Audience Award at the 61st International Music Competition of ARD in Germany.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b04vd60b)
I've Never Told Anyone This Before

Erica Wagner - A History of My Family in One Object

Continuing our series in which five writers were invited to reveal something which they'd never told anyone before. From difficult and awkward truths to personal and challenging experiences, this series of essays offers an intriguing and provocative glimpse into the inner lives of others.

At a time of the year when it's traditional for families to gather together, the journalist and author Erica Wagner looks back on the stories her mother told about her father through the medium of the wedding present she gave him in 1965: a Norden bombsight taken from a Second World War B29 bomber.

The narratives we build around ourselves and those we love are just that - constructed stories - and sometimes the boundary between fact and fiction is a fine one. Erica Wagner's father died in 2007; her mother a couple of years later. During the period when she was packing up their belongings and also spending time with her parents' surviving friends, she began to discover that her mother's proud story about her father's years as a pilot didn't entirely make sense. Her father had never spoken about his wartime experiences, and records from the USAF were either missing or destroyed. With no one left to ask, what does it mean when the stories you cherish may not even be true?

THU 12:00 Composer of the Week (b04vqg6j)
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Celebrity

Donald Macleod introduces two notorious events: the Venetian debut of the singer with whom Vivaldi became infamously associated, and the publication of The Four Seasons.

1725 was an important year for Vivaldi. He once again took over running the San Angelo Theatre in Venice where he oversaw the debut of a young singer whose name was to become inextricably, and rather scandalously, linked with his. At the same time, his collection of concertos entitled Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione was published. It contained a set of 4 concertos known collectively as The Four Seasons, destined to become one of the most popular works of all time. The set were particularly fashionable in Paris where the young Louis XV insisted upon a command performance of the Spring Concerto at Versailles. Alongside the concerto, which famously evokes the icy blasts of winter, Donald Macleod introduces part of a grand serenata Vivaldi composed as a paean of praise to France, a sonata for cello - an instrument for which Vivaldi had a particular empathy, and an excerpt from one of the operas in which Vivaldi's protégé, Anna Giraud, first tread the boards at the San Angelo Theatre.

THU 16:30 Words and Music (b0186gw3)
The Rhyming and the Chiming

Words and Music on the theme of bells. Readers Sylvestra Le Touzel and David Troughton.

This is the season for bells, joyful Christmas bells and clamorous New Year peals - and they will feature in this edition of the programme. But there will also be rhyming and chiming from other seasons of life, taking Edgar Allan Poe's onomatopoeic poem as its centrepiece. There are bells from childhood, from marriage, from the ordinary round of life as nostalgically remembered in both city and countryside by Betjeman. The sinister side of the sound of bells is brought to life by Dickens in his atmospheric story "The Chimes", and in the famous scene from "The Nine Tailors" by Dorothy L. Sayers in which Lord Peter Wimsey finds himself in the belltower as the cacophony carries on about him. There are alarums from the battlefield and the gallows humour of the bells of hell going ting-a-ling-a-ling... But this is Christmas and so Longfellow and Tennyson's "Wild Bells" will see us out on a note of celebration and hope for the future.

Music from Liszt, Henze, Loesser, Philip Feeney, Grieg and Elizabeth Poston among others.

THU 17:45 New Generation Artists (b04vj95f)

German baritone Benjamin Appl was the last private pupil of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and was recipient of the 2012 Schubert Prize awarded by the Deutsches Schubert Gesellschaft. He opens today's programme with a recording, especially for Christmas Day, of Mariä's Wiegenlied by Reger. Schumann's Märchenerzählungen are perfect for Christmas afternoon, each piece from the set tells a whimsical fairy-tale in music. Robin Tritscher and Sean Shibe provide some heat as they perform Italian love songs for voice and guitar by Giuliani, and to end Canteloube's gorgeous settings of folk-songs from the Auvergne region of France performed by Kitty Whately with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor, John Wilson.

FRI 12:00 Composer of the Week (b04vd5wr)
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)

Into Obscurity

Donald Macleod reflects on Vivaldi's bittersweet relationship with Vienna and introduces music from the final decade of his life, as musical tastes in Venice began to change.

Vivaldi continued to compose for the stage through his final decade though, as tastes in Venice began to change, his standing as an opera composer was about to peak. He was constantly on the road, travelling from one court to another with his favourite singer, Anna Giraud. After a very acrimonious debacle with the Cardinal of Ferrara, who refused Vivaldi entry into the city, he nearly went bankrupt. Vivaldi still had friends in high places and, in 1740, Vivaldi made the fateful decision to travel to Vienna and seek patronage from Charles VI, Emperor of Austria. Tragically for Vivaldi, the Emperor died just as Vivaldi arrived. The composer himself only survived a few more months, ending his career in abject poverty. Donald Macleod introduces music from those final years including two operas staged in Venice in which Anna sang key roles, a concerto from one of the collections dedicated to the music-loving Emperor of Austria and, finally, one of Vivaldi's colourful multi-instrument concertos played at his final farewell to Venice.

FRI 17:45 New Generation Artists (b04vj964)
Clemency Burton-Hill continues her two week series showcasing the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists.

Russian pianist, Pavel Kolesnikov became Laureate of the Honens Prize for Piano in 2012 - he opens today's programme with Mozart's dramatic Fantasia K, 475. Narek Hakhnazaryan shot to fame when he was awarded Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition. Today we hear him play the piece that Tchaikovsky described in 1887 as, "the single fruit of my musical spirit from the whole summer." German baritone Benjamin Appl was the last private pupil of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and today Benjamin is joined by pianist Joseph Middleton to perform what Schubert described as "spine-chilling" songs, the cycle that affected the distracted composer more than any other, his settings of texts by Wilhelm Müller, Winterreise D.911.

Prom 55: Tchaikovsky, Debussy and Unsuk Chin

The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Myung-Whun Chung at this year's BBC Proms in music by Unsuk Chin alongside two Western symphonic pieces by Debussy and Tchaikovsky

Debussy: La mer
Unsuk Chin: Šu
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B minor, 'Pathétique'

Wu Wei (sheng)
Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra
Myung-Whun Chung (conductor)

Myung-Whun Chung made his first Proms appearance this summer as Music Director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, which made its own Proms debut as one of a series of global orchestras.

They brought with them the sounds of South Korea in a concerto for sheng (traditional reed mouth organ) and orchestra written by their compatriot Unsuk Chin - a sonic game between soloist and orchestra.

Chin's evocative textures are framed by the sensuous richness of Debussy's La mer, capturing the sea in all its moods, and Tchaikovsky's final symphony, with its elusive but turbulent narrative.

Concert originally broadcast 27/08/2014.

When someone else's life is up for sale is it an act of rescue to revive their story or an act of trespass and looting? What are the borders between prurience and respect?
