SAT 21:00 Between the Ears (b03rwl5p)
Chinoiserie

A radiophonic drama by Peter Blegvad and Iain Chambers.

"A character can be true without being real, don't you think?"

John, an exiled Chinese novelist, meets an American author struggling with a commission about a shape-shifting princess. Their ideas fuse, and as Princess Xu-Feng takes form, mind-altering events occur. We travel inside the minds of the characters, hearing their thoughts and their words, revealing the gap between fantasy and reality.

Chinoiserie explores the true price we pay for speaking the truth. We rule our lives by what we think is real, by what we decide is true. This drama asks whether we're deceiving ourselves.

Chinoiserie follows Peter Blegvad and Iain Chambers' previous drama for Between The Ears, Use It Or Lose It, which won a Sony Radio Award and Prix Europa special commendation in 2012.

An Open Audio production for BBC Radio 3.

Michael Sheen is famous for playing real people on screen - from Tony Blair and Kenneth Williams to Brian Clough and David Frost. This person was Mozart, in the play Amadeus, and Michael has chosen part of Mozart's Requiem, used in that production.

His other choices include music by Lisa Gerrard and Arvo Pärt and Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds starring Richard Burton, who shares a home town with Michael. He tells Michael Berkeley about his recent return home to Port Talbot to work for three years on a marathon staging of The Passion, which lasted for 72 hours and involved a cast of 1000, mostly local, people.

SUN 18:45 Sunday Feature (b03rx8jf)
Shanghai - World City Redux

Rana Mitter reveals how Shanghai today is forging its identity as an ultramodern city - by rediscovering its glamorous past.

In the years between the world wars, 'Shanghai' meant jazz and movies, dazzling neon and astonishing department stores.

Before the communist takeover, a major part of Shanghai, the 'International Settlement' was administered predominantly by the British; there was also a 'French Concession'.

This foreign presence brought oppression, but also infusions of modernity.

And as Rana discovers, as China once again modernises at breakneck speed, the legacy of these European imperial outposts is making itself felt once again.

He sits in as three 20-something professional Shanghainese women compare notes with an 80-something woman about the relative merits of Shanghai social life today and in the 1930s.

He discovers how important aspects of its identity as a world city, such as jazz and speaking English, were quietly cultivated in the early decades of communist rule. And how, since the economic opening, they have emerged back into the light.

Talking to novelists and nationalists, historians and ordinary Shanghainese, Rana discovers - to his surprise - that to them, the violence that underpinned the British colonial presence no longer seems profoundly hurtful.

Instead, they emphasise the way the British presence brought the modern world to the city.

And he talks to those directly engaged in fusing the old cosmopolitan city back into today's hyper-metropolis, from the Italian architect who restores Edwardian buildings on the Bund waterfront to their former splendour, to the Chinese novelist whose detective stories set in modern Shanghai are haunted by the Jazz Age.

Producer: Phil Tinline

First broadcast January 2014.

Now in his mid-thirties, he regularly sings at the world's leading opera houses: this season includes his Covent Garden debut as well as leading roles at the Vienna State and New York Metropolitan opera houses. His recital includes songs by Johann Friedrich Reichardt, who died two hundred years ago: he was brought up to be a court musician, but after meeting Immanuel Kant he studied philosophy and became a revolutionary, active in France and Poland. In between these activities, he found time to write a series of charming songs and chamber pieces.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b03rxdmq)
Jules Massenet (1842-1912)

A Master of Melody

Donald Macleod introduces one of France's most spectaular operatic superstars.

He was one of the most successful composers of his age. Jules Massenet gave his adoring audiences just what they wanted: beautiful melody, rich sentimentality, romance, fantasy and an unmistakably French sense of elegance. It was a formula that served him well into the twentieth century, over a prolific output of twenty-five opera productions. His accomplishments were the product of a rigid personal regime, often starting work at four o'clock in the morning, and continuing for sixteen hours a day. When he wasn't composing, Massenet could often be found supervising his current stage production, or coaching the latest in a long line of brilliant leading ladies. Whether the whiff of scandal that followed him throughout his career had any basis in fact is still a subject for debate. What is unarguable is that he provided some of the best female voices of the age with music that tested their talents to the very limit.

In this programme, Donald Macleod explores Massenet's celebrated gift for melody, as well as some of the recurring dramatic themes that crop up throughout his work. He also presents a musical rarity among all the operatic arias, Massenet's only concerto.

Together they explore the settings by both Schubert and Wolf of Goethe's great poetic version of the Prometheus myth. For Florian Boesch, the romantic poets were committed to living extreme emotions and when he performs their words in the settings by Schubert and Wolf, he feels as if he's 'looking into his own soul'.

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

Clark Rundell (conductor)

"I feel there is no boundary line", said Duke Ellington, talking about classical music and jazz, and so as part of the 2014 Celtic Connections Festival, two of the UK's brightest jazz talents join forces with one of the UK's most versatile orchestras, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, on stage at City Halls in Glasgow.
Pianist Gwilym Simcock and saxophonist Trish Clowes (former and current Radio 3 New Generation Artists) perform their own compositions and improvisations alongside works by classical composers who, in an earlier era, blended jazz styles with their own idioms.
Amid recent works by Simcock and Clowes, performed by them with the BBC SSO and their own all-star trio, the orchestra will play Milhaud's 1920's ballet score 'La création du monde' and Bernstein's '3 Dance Episodes', drawn from his Broadway musical 'On The Town'. The concert is conducted by the American-born contemporary music specialist Clark Rundell.

Followed by recent recommendations from the CD Review shelves.

MON 22:00 An Interview with Christian Thielemann (b03t7fsz)
Another chance to hear Tom Service's Music Matters interview with the German conductor Christian Thielemann, Principal Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle since 2012, Artistic Director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, and one of the foremost conductors of his generation.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest living exponents of the Austro-German symphonic and operatic repertoire - his Ring cycle at Bayreuth in 2006 was hugely acclaimed, and his performances of Strauss and Schumann have also been praised for their richness and intensity - Thielemann has held posts at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Munich Philharmonic among others, and has had a very close relationship with the Bayreuth festival since his debut there in 2000.

In this lively and thought-provoking interview Thielemann tells Tom Service why he prefers to be thought of as a kapellmeister rather than a conductor, why tradition is an inspiration as well as challenge, and why flexibilty is the key to everything. He also explains why he believes music can't possibly be political, and what drives him to conduct.

Producer Emma Bloxham.

MON 23:00 Jazz on 3 (b03s6207)
Schlippenbach Trio

Alex von Schlippenbach's trio performing at the Purcell Room during the 2013 London Jazz Festival.

To listen to the Schlippenbach Trio is to sit in on a musical conversation that's been going for over 40 years between three godfathers of European free improvisation: pianist Alex von Schlippenbach, saxophonist Evan Parker and drummer Paul Lovens. Their vocabulary is drawn from the full swathe of jazz and free music history, but the overall sound also reflects three performers whose individual style and personality is as strong as ever.

Also on the programme, we celebrate pioneering guitarist Marc Ribot's 60th birthday year. Alongside a performance from the Jazz on 3 archives with Evan Parker and Han Bennink, Ribot talks to fellow guitarist and Ribot fan Chris Sharkey. Their wide-ranging conversation covers great accidental guitar solos, learning to play the wrong way round and the studio secrets of Tom Waits, ending up with a bit of a jam.

Presenter: Jez Nelson
Producers: Peggy Sutton & Chris Elcombe.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b03s62qt)
Jules Massenet (1842-1912)

Literary Leanings

The origins of some of Massenet's most celebrated stories.

He was one of the most successful composers of his age. Jules Massenet gave his adoring audiences just what they wanted: beautiful melody, rich sentimentality, romance, fantasy and an unmistakably French sense of elegance. It was a formulae that served him well into the twentieth century, over a prolific output of twenty-five opera productions.

In this programme, Donald Macleod explores some of the varied narrative sources that caught Massenet's dramatic eye, including the oft re-told legend of El Cid and Goethe's autobiographical novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther", whose tragic ending so captivated the composer.

Also performed is the Piano Trio No.1 by Anton Arensky; an eclectic work with hints of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsy which, despite Rimsky-Korsakov's predictions that Arensky's music would disappear without trace, has remained a favourite in this genre.

Lionel Bringuier, Music Director of the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, is one of the most exciting young conductors to emerge from France in recent years. This is a programme to conjure with for a conductor of his contagious vitality: between Beethoven's spirited Fourth Symphony and the hypnotic extended climax that is Ravel's sultry Boléro are two 21st century French gems. Marc-Andre Dalbavie's Flute Concerto is characterised by transparency and by a fluent dialogue between soloist and orchestra, in which each finds resonances in the other. In Ravel à son âme (Ravel, to his soul), Gérard Pesson pays brief, entrancing tribute to his illustrious predecessor

In this programme, Donald Macleod looks at the final years of Massenet's career, which included a surprise flop as his music came to be seen as increasingly old-fashioned, and a new relationship with the theatre in Monte Carlo.

Lawrence Power (viola)
BBC National Orchestra of Wales
Anu Tali (conductor)

Two works written in America by European composers with fond memories of home: Dvorak's "New World" symphony combines melodies infulenced by spirituals and 'plantation songs' with a yearning for his native Czech homeland. Miklos Rozsa left Hungary to eventually become one of Hollywood's most successful and celebrated film score composers, with three Oscars to his credit. Alongside epic scores like Ben-Hur and El Cid, concert music remained an important part of Rozsa's musical life. The Viola Concerto was his last orchestral work, dark and dramatic, a perfect blend of cinematic colour and sharp Hungarian accents. Soloist Lawrence Power is one of the foremost violists today, and as an alumnus of Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme, he opens this new season from Swansea with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, each of which features past members from the last decade. Liszt chose the Greek myth of Prometheus as the perfect subject for a Romantic composer. The story contains "boldness, suffering, endurance and redemption" - exactly what he needed to bring out his best in this dramatic and innovative score. The intriguing young Estonian conductor Anu Tali makes her debut with the orchestra.

Followed by recent recommendations from the CD Review shelves.
