SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b039bd1x)
Gillian Lynne

Gillian Lynne is best known as the choreographer of Cats and Phantom of the Opera, among other West End hits. She received a lifetime Olivier Award earlier this year. But her career began more than seven decades ago, when she was spotted as a dancer by Ninette de Valois. She danced during the War, with doodlebugs falling around her and just two pianos in the pit - no orchestras, as all the men were away fighting. She danced in the first night at Covent Garden after the War, when audiences dusted off their evening clothes. She then moved into movies, playing a gypsy temptress in The Master of Ballantrae opposite Errol Flynn. The sexual chemistry wasn't confined to the screen - she and Flynn had an affair, though his drink problem meant 'He wasn't a great lover. At the end of the day, he couldn't... But he was a beautiful man.'

As she developed as a choreographer, Gillian Lynne worked with the leading composers of the day, including Sir Michael Tippett. In fact she asked him to make changes in his Ritual Dances (from The Midsummer Marriage) so it would become a bit clearer what on earth was going on. 'I said to Colin Davis, I don't know what this is about. But I think it's about orgasms. He said, "Quite right, dear girl. Quite right!"'

Now 87, Lynne talks frankly about her career, and people she has worked with, like Frederick Ashton and Dudley Moore. She is still working - 'If I didn't I'd keel over' - and thanks to her daily workout, she is still enviably fit. She tells the story of finding love for the first time when she was in her 50s - with a man 27 years younger than herself. She's naughty, irreverent, and fun; this is also priceless social history.

Music choices include Fauré, Walton, Vaughan Williams, Tippett and Errol Garner.

First broadcast in September 2013.

Saint-Saëns: Symphony No. 3 in C minor, 'Organ'

Janine Jansen (violin)
Thierry Escaich (organ)
Orchestre de Paris
Paavo Järvi (conductor)

The Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten was written by Arvo Pärt in response to his sense of loss for a composer he had never met but whose music he describes as possessing the "unusual purity" he himself sought as a composer. Britten's own Violin Concerto was written during the composer's war-time years in New York, "I feel so deeply about this piece...one experiences the incredible strength of it" says tonight's soloist Janine Jansen. In the second half of the concert Paavo Järvi leads his Orchestre de Paris in two French works: firstly the Mediterranean swagger of Berlioz's overture 'Le corsaire' and then the weight of full orchestra and organ in Saint-Saëns 'Third Symphony' which concludes a concert that journeys from Estonian introspection to Gallic extrovert display.

An edited version of this Prom will be broadcast on Friday 6th September at 2pm.

Prom 67 (part 2): Arvo Part, Britten, Berlioz & Saint-Saens

Arvo Pärt, Britten, Berlioz and Saint-Saëns performed by the Orchestre de Paris and Paavo Järvi live at the BBC Proms with Janine Jansen as soloist in Britten's Violin Concerto

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Martin Handley

Pärt: Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten
Britten: Violin Concerto

Berlioz: Overture 'Le corsaire'

Fretwork
Ian Bostridge (tenor)
Elizabeth Kenny (lute)

In a concert to mark his birth, 450 years ago, singer Ian Bostridge, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny and viol consort Fretwork explore the music of John Dowland. Courtier, composer, internationally famous performer and occasional spy, Dowland was described by a contemporary as someone "whose heavenly touch upon the lute doth ravish human sense". Today's concert explores both that ravishing music - in songs, dances and instrumental works - and also Dowland's world and life - through musical portraits of his friends, associates and employers. And it includes the song which became his musical calling-card, one of the best known vocal works of the 17th century, and which came to be seen as the epitome of English melancholy: 'Flow my tears'.

Christian Ihle Hadland (piano)
Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra
Vasily Petrenko (conductor)

In their second Proms appearance this summer Vasily Petrenko and the Oslo Philharmonic explore the Romantic landscape and Schubertian echoes of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony. Repeatedly revised by the composer during his lifetime, the symphony opens with a radiant sunrise.
Last heard playing Brahms with the Signum Quartet (PCM 7), Christian Ihle Hadland joins Petrenko and the orchestra for Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto, built on the Mozartian model but already pointing to the bold gestures of the composer's maturity.

TUE 21:15 Sunday Feature (b01pd3nb)
Stop Calling Me 'Doctor Sex'

Matthew Sweet uncovers the extraordinary career of Dr Alex Comfort, author of The Joy of Sex.

By the time of his death in 2000, Comfort's 1972 sex manual had sold over 12 million copies. It was one of the big, mainstream best-sellers that made the liberalisation of sexual mores an accepted part of British life. But at the end of his life, Comfort regretted that the success of this one book had obscured his rich range of work in other areas - from poetry to gerontology, broadcasting to anarchism. In this programme, Matthew Sweet argues that by forgetting who this man really was, we've also lost sight of the true influences that shaped his blockbuster book.

Matthew begins in the childhood garden where, aged 15, Comfort blew off four fingers making fireworks. Far from letting the accident get in his way, he resolved to become a writer, publishing the first of his many books while still in his teens. Comfort became a pacifist and, during the Second World War, he not only refused to fight but conducted a controversial campaign against the bombing of German cities. He argued publicly with George Orwell about the right thing to do if the Nazis invaded. And he was also ruled out of broadcasting on the wartime BBC - though that didn't stop him becomnig a prolific broadcaster in the 1960s.

After the war, he was a leading anti-nuclear activist, at one stage briefly going to prison over a planned protest. Yet all the time he was formulating the ideas that form the basis of The Joy of Sex, which have their roots in his anarchism. An anarchist, he argued, was not a 'bomb-thrower' but someone who resisted the power of those in authority and insisted instead on personal responsibility. His early factual writing on sex began as a talk for fellow-anarchists in the late 1940s. And all the while, Comfort was pursuing a separate scientific career as a gerontologist, helping to pioneer the study of old age. Tragically, his own last years were anything but the 'Good Age' he envisaged for others. Yet, Matthew argues, almost all Comfort's varied labours seem to stem from his drive to struggle against limits - from the loss of his fingers to the power of the wartime state, from sexual repression to the prejudice against the old.

Prom 70: Britten & Lloyd

The BBC Singers, the Choristers of the Temple Church and David Hill, live at the BBC Proms, perform Benjamin Britten's 'A Boy was Born', and George Lloyd's Requiem for Princess Diana.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Christopher Cook

Lloyd: Requiem (London premiere)

Greg Morris (organ)
Choristers of the Temple Church
BBC Singers
David Hill (conductor)

Benjamin Britten's masterly Christmas work 'A Boy was Born' is one of his earliest compositions - completed when he only 19 - but is nonetheless a classic of the modern choral repertoire. Cast in, for choral music, the highly unusual form of a theme and variations, it's laid out for choirs of adult and treble voices. Brilliantly scored for its vocal forces, it counts as one of the most original works in the entire choral canon. In tonight's performance, the Temple Church choristers are joined by the BBC Singers - the group which gave the premiere of the work in 1934. This centenary Proms tribute to Benjamin Britten is matched by one to another composer born 100 years ago this year: George Lloyd, whose Requiem was his final composition, composed in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, and tonight receiving its London premiere.

WED 12:00 Composer of the Week (b039c58q)
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

Nature, Life and Love

Dvorák regarded himself first and foremost as a Bohemian composer, though it proved to be a stumbling block when trying to conquer the international market with his operas. Thanks to the anti-Czech feeling in Vienna at the time, it was impossible for him to get a fair hearing there. In spite of his intention to find a subject with a more international flavour, Dvorák's eighth opera proved to be the most Bohemian opera he ever composed. Donald Macleod introduces an excerpt from it plus one of three concert overtures inspired by the countryside around Dvorák's summer retreat, and the evocative piano trio destined to become one of the most enduring of all his chamber works.

The Poem of the End

Marina Tsvetaeva's poetic masterpiece, charting the final moments of a passionate affair in Prague 1924. Two lovers walk across the bridges of Prague, as they build themselves up to cross the final bridge - of separation.

Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941) was one of the greatest Russian poets of the 20th century. She lived through and wrote about the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Moscow famine that followed it. In 1922, Tsvetaeva left Russia and lived with her family in impoverished exile in Paris, Berlin and Prague, where she had an affair with Konstantin Rozdevitch, a former military officer. She wrote about this relationship in several poems, including Poem of the End.

Tsvetaeva returned to Moscow in 1939. Her husband Sergei Efron and her daughter Alya were arrested on espionage charges in 1941 and her husband was later executed. Tsvetaeva committed suicide in 1941. Her work inspired a number of great poets including Osip Mandelstam, Boris Pasternak, Rainer Maria Rilke, Anna Akhmatova and Joseph Brodsky.

Written by Marina Tsvetaeva and translated by Elaine Feinstein

Performed by Imogen Stubbs and David Seddon

Produced by Emma Harding.

WED 22:15 Sunday Feature (b01ppwn4)
Edouard Manet: The Direct Gaze

Actor Fiona Shaw unlocks the gaze of the most famous naked women painted by French Impressionist Edouard Manet. With contributions from novelist Julian Barnes and artist Michael Craig Martin.

The 19th century French painter, Edouard Manet made art modern: his most famous work is "Le déjeuner sur l'herbe. He is known as the father of Impressionism but we know comparatively little about him. He did away with mythology, allegory and history and instead painted life around him, as it happened. His friend Baudelaire wrote to him "You are only the first in the degeneration of your art". Now, with a long awaited exhibition of his work soon to open at the Royal Academy in London, Fiona Shaw - who enjoys painting, when she's not acting or directing - stares back at the women in Manet's most famous works.

She talks to historians and artists including Julian Barnes, Manet's biographer, Juliet Wilson Bareau, curator Stephane Guegan, art Historian Tamar Garb and contemporary artists who carry a torch for their 19th century predecessor, including the father of Brit Art, Michael Craig Martin.

Manet first shocked the Paris salon in 1863 with his painting of a naked woman having a picnic with her friends in a glade on the Seine. Rejected by the formal exhibition it found its way to the Salon des Refuses, an invention of Napolean III in that very same year, but he was so put out by Le déjeuner sur l'herbe that he said it was "an offence against decency" - while the Empress Eugenie walked past, determinedly not looking. Manet followed this with his painting of a naked prostitute...

In this programme, Fiona Shaw strips back to explore painting itself. She visits the Musee d'Orsay to see Manet's great works, traces his influences from the Louvre and walks the streets near his studio to unlock the gaze of his sitters.

Producer: Kate Bland.

Margaret Are You Grieving? A Cultural History of Weeping

Throughout our cultural history, tears have been intimately connected with the arts, whether as inspiration or response.

Thomas Dixon is director of the UK's first Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary University London.

In this programme he explores the history of weeping as an aesthetic response to works of art: paintings, writing, music, theatre and film.

What it is about works of art and religious symbols that induce weeping and why do we shed tears over performances by actors and singers, fictional characters, abstract symbols, poems, music, metaphysical ideas - in other words things that are not real?

Margery Kempe, Gluck, Mark Rothko and Sophocles' Electra may provide some of the answers.

Thomas Dixon talks to Fiona Shaw, Miri Rubin, Pete de Bolla, Virginia Eatough, Giles Fraser, Ian Bostridge, Matthew Sweet and Simon Goldhill.

Producer: Natalie Steed.

Prom 73: Imogen Cooper and Paul Lewis

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Catherine Bott

Imogen Cooper and Paul Lewis live at the BBC Proms with two great works by Schubert

Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor, D958
Schubert: Piano Sonata in C major, D812 'Grand Duo'

Pianists Imogen Cooper and Paul Lewis return for the final Late Night Prom of the festival. Cooper plays Schubert's late, great Piano Sonata in C minor, its scherzo still informed by the Rossinian joie de vivre of the early symphonies, the surrounding movements infused with the sorrow and resignation of the song-cycles Winterreise and Schwanengesang. Published posthumously, the symphonically conceived Grand Duo dates from the summer of 1824 when the composer was engaged as music master to Marie and Caroline Esterhazy on the family's Slovakian estate.

Final Years

Dvorák's cello concerto, the final major work from his sojourn in America, received its premiere in England in 1896 conducted by the composer. For the remaining years of his life Dvorák travelled little and, other than writing a few chamber works, produced nothing but operas and symphonic poems inspired by the myths and legends of Bohemia and beyond. Donald Macleod introduces Dvorák's last American work, a haunting tone poem based on a grisly Czech folk tale and the opera with which Dvorák finally achieved his one desire - an international operatic success.

Plus highlights from last year's City of London Festival.

Modernism Redux

Will Self broadcasts an imaginary archive of modernist radio and discusses the influence of modernism today.

In a secret laboratory underneath the BBC archive there is a small room containing a special machine. It's a BBC prototype 'RP-1 Ethermatic remitter'. An experimental machine designed to retrieve ('remit') past radio signals back out of the air. Although partially successful during field trials in 1922 it was never made fully operational...until now.

Will Self has been given access to the machine to investigate the relationship between early radio technology and modern culture. Taking his cue from the Wasteland and Ulysses - both published as the RP-1 was developed - he will be drawing from the air an assemblage of modernist art and ideas using the very technologies that enabled them. In doing so he hopes to create something that isn't simply about modernism and its after effects but is itself a modernist work.

Around these Will has conducted a series of conversations at the South Bank Centre and Brunel University with leading cultural thinkers such as John Gray, John Carey and John Mullan about the value and use of Modernist ideas now.

First broadcast in February 2013.
