The Rite of Spring

Dance critic Stephanie Jordan traces the explosive influence of the Rite of Spring on modern dance, the shocking combination of Igor Stravinsky's music and Vaslav Nijinsky's choreography, 100 years after the piece was famously premiered in Paris in 1913 and led to uproar.

The programme features interviews with choreographers Akram Khan and Mark Morris, both devising new interpretations of the Rite. Stephanie Jordan meets Deborah Bull, who danced the role of the Chosen Maiden and Monica Mason, for whom the Royal Ballet1s Kenneth MacMillan created his legendary solo choreography. Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer explain how they reconstructed Nijinsky1s 1913 ballet and Marin Alsop describes the physicality involved in conducting Stravinsky1s score today.

First broadcast in May 2013.

Peter Warlock's yearning and melancholy song-cycle on poems by WB Yeats lies at the heart of this Prom, paired with another wistful piece of English pastoralia from the student pen of the young Imogen Holst. Alongside them, Poulenc's wonderfully witty and colourful Sextet for piano and wind instruments provides a spicy contrast, with - to finish - an elusive 17th-century harpsichord work by François Couperin, refracted through the contemporary prism of Thomas Adès's fertile musical imagination.

An edited version of this Prom will be broadcast on Saturday 24th August at 2pm.

The Conductor

"It seemed he'd been waiting all his life for the knock at the door.."

In an extract from Sarah Quigley's novel, all eyes are on Dimitri Shostakovich.
He's sleepy, bumbling around the kitchen, trying to make his morning porridge.
A knock at the door has unsettled him, but that's the least of his concerns.
Where is his wife, Nina? What is happening in his city, Leningrad?

And what about the work he has to do?

SUN 13:00 The Early Music Show (b038xqrz)
Jacques Arcadelt

At the Hermitage in St Petersburg hangs one of Caravaggio's most famous paintings: the Lute Player. An androgynous young man looks out at us as he plucks the strings of this most iconic of Renaissance instruments, and a music book lies in front of him. Close inspection reveals that not only has Caravaggio carefully painted a real piece of lute music, but we can even identify its composer - Jacques Arcadelt.

Today Lucie Skeaping explores the life of Jacques Arcadelt, one of the most mysterious, fascinating, and significant figures in 16th century music. Many biographical details of his life are sketchy; but from being born in what we now know as Belgium, in the first decade of the 16th century, Arcadelt found his way to Italy where he became a driving force in the rise and popularity of the madrigal.

Arcadelt's several books of madrigals were among the most prolifically-published books of the entire Renaissance - the soundtrack to a film about the period's many great artists would unquestionably need to feature a great deal of music by him. Michelangelo's paintings were barely dry when Arcadelt began singing in the Sistine Chapel, and there's every suggestion that being at the heart of the Renaissance must have been a vital source of his creative inspiration.

All of Arcadelt's music is vocal, and covers a vast range of styles, from light songs to entire Masses, and also a setting of the epic Lamentations of Jeremiah. In this programme Lucie focuses on madrigals performed by the Hilliard Ensemble, the Orlando Consort, the Fires of Love; and religious music performed by the Josquin Capella from a disc released just last year. Lucie also reflects on an intriguing aspect of Arcadelt's work, namely that although he wrote no instrumental music, other composers of the period were all too ready to adapt it for instrumental performance.

The picture of Arcadelt that emerges is of a musician whose senses of enterprise and adventure led to a stellar career as composer and performer, reflected both in his service of distinguished patrons including the Medici family and the Vatican, and also in the huge popular esteem in which he was so obviously held.

Prom 51: Tippett, Britten & Elgar

Daniel Harding (conductor)

What was to have been the latest Proms appearance by Sir Colin Davis becomes, following his death earlier this year, a concert honouring his memory. Taking over as conductor, Daniel Harding performs music by the modern British composer with whom Sir Colin was perhaps most associated - Michael Tippett - including in his programme Tippett's wonderfully vigorous, energetic and inventive Concerto for strings. This year's Britten centenary is marked in his white-hot 1940 song-cycle to words by the precocious teenage poet, surrealist and libertine Arthur Rimbaud. Concluding the concert, the magisterial Second Symphony by the grandfather of 20th-century English music, Edward Elgar.

Plus highlights from last year's City of London Festival.

It's that group that forms the focus for this programme: Jez Nelson is joined by BBC New Generation Artist and Shorter aficionado Trish Clowes to pick out highlights from three performances by the group, recorded by Jazz on 3 over the last 12 years. They'll also be discussing his enduring achievements, with archive interviews featuring bandmates from across the decades, and Mr Shorter himself.

WED 19:50 Twenty Minutes (b038ygbl)
The Music of Radio Times

The first edition of Radio Times magazine hit the bookstands in September 1923. Nine decades later, radio historian Simon Elmes discovers that music, and particularly classical music has always been a staple ingredient of its success formula.

From weekly programme notes by eminent music scholars on the major concert of the radio week, to anguished discussion of "highbrow" and "lowbrow" compositions, the early years of one of Britain's most successful and enduring publications were awash with music theory, argument and appreciation. "Is Bartok mad?" launched a fierce debate on new music, while a lengthy disquisition on the Church Cantatas of Bach heralded a huge series of weekly broadcasts comprising the complete canon of the choirmaster of Leipzig.

Picture features celebrated the glamorous sopranos, contraltos and 'lady violinists' of the week, and the harpist Sidonie Goossens, still performing at the Proms in the last decades of the 20th century, was already a regular photographic favourite in its third. Meanwhile, in 1924, the celebrated diva Dame Clara Butt even went so far as to share with Radio Times readers her great musical dream: "I would like my singing to do something to bring to pass the glorious day 'when war shall be no more'. Is it only a dream?".

Sadly, as events 15 years later were to prove, it was.

The Gospels Come Home

As the priceless Lindisfarne Gospels visit Durham for a major exhibition after four centuries' absence, multiple-award-winning author David Almond explores what they mean to his fellow North-Easterners.

At the heart of this programme are a sequence of lyrical, location-based "meditations", in which David reflects - in his inimitable style and voice - about the ways in which the Lindisfarne Gospels, and their creation on Lindisfarne during the Anglo-Saxon era, laid the foundations for what it means to be a North-Easterner today.

The Lindisfarne Gospels are one of the world's greatest books and among the most important works of European art of the first millenium. Created on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne around the year 700, they are normally housed in the British Library in London, but for three months this summer, the Gospels are returning to the North East for a major exhibition in Durham.

David Almond visits the British Library, Durham, Newcastle and Lindisfarne itself - a location he has adored since his boyhood - to explore the meaning of the Gospels to himself and to his fellow North-Easterners.

He talks with experts in early books and local people on the island to find out more about the making of the Gospels, the unique place they hold in terms of art, religion and literature, the long journeys they have made in the past and their "homecoming" this summer.

David Almond is a writer of short stories and adult fiction but is best known for his children's writing - above all, Skellig and My Name is Mina. Amongst other awards, he has won the Carnegie Medal, the Whitbread Children's Award, The Michael L.Prinz Award, the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and and the Smarties Book Prize.

Lauded for his recording of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues, pianist Alexander Melnikov is the soloist in the composer's buoyant Piano Concerto No. 2. FRI 20:20 Twenty Minutes (b038yjv0)
Friedrich Nietzsche's Horrible Music

The awe-inspiring thinker who declared 'God is dead' was also, unexpectedly, a composer.

The first time Richard Wagner heard a composition by his closest friend he had to leave the room, crying with laughter. The leading conductor of the day dismissed Nietzsche brutally. 'Several times', von Bülow wrote, 'I had to ask myself: is the whole thing a joke? You yourself describe your music as "horrible"- it is, actually, more horrible than you realise ...'

And yet, Tom Service discovers, the music written by the young philosopher is not all that bad.

The author of Also sprach Zarathustra produced piano pieces, songs and even sketches for symphonies. Had he not been comparing himself with the greatest living composer, he might well have pursued a career as a professional musician. Instead he became the philosopher who shaped the modern world.

Produced by Hannah Sander.

FRI 22:00 Sunday Feature (b01n11f0)
After the Gold Rush - The Poetry of California

California is the richest, most populous state in America. An economic and technical powerhouse it has also been the engine of artistic development, especially in poetry. The Beats of the 1950s spring to mind - Allen Ginsberg first read 'Howl' in San Francisco. Since then many radical ideas pioneered in California have become familiar - Environmentalism, Gay Liberation, the personal computer.

In 'After the Gold Rush' Dana Gioia traces how these are reflected in California's poetry. One of America's leading poets and essayists, Gioia was Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts in the George Bush years, before returning to his native California to write. He has won the American Book Award, and has just published his fourth volume of poems, 'Pity the Beautiful'.

Gioia listens to poems by, and talks to, Kim Addonizio, who writes freely about sex, in strict sonnet form; Francisco X. Alarcon, for whom Spanish is as important as English; Al Young, the African-American poet who became the state's laureate. He hears from the great science-fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson and historian Kevin Starr, about the impact of California's landscape on its writers.

He finds that recent developments owe much to what went before, before the Beats, right back to the Gold Rush of the 19th century. People still come to get rich but San Francisco is now one of the most competitive places in the world and no one comes to drop out. Gioia wonders what the impact of this will be on Californian poetry and meets Dan Stone, a brave or foolhardy young writer who has just launched a new magazine of literature and Rock and Roll. Music by Californian artists, from John Adams to Tom Waits, is woven through Gioia's exploration of the poetry of California.

Producer: Julian May.
