The Tempest, by Thomas Ades

The Tempest, by Thomas Adès, from the Metropolitan Opera, New York, conducted by the composer. With Simon Keenlyside as Prospero, Audrey Luna as Ariel, and Isobel Leonard as Miranda.

Miranda suspects that the magic practices of her father, Prospero, are responsible for a huge storm that has sunk a passing ship.
She's right: those on board were his enemies. Prospero nevertheless instructs his spirit Ariel to revive them and bring them to the island.
One of them is Prince Ferdinand who, when he arrives ashore, finds Miranda and the two fall instantly in love. Prospero is not pleased. He immobilizes Ferdinand and prepares to further his vengeance on the rest of the court.

The New York Times called Thomas Adès's masterpiece "one of the most inspired, audacious and personal operas to have come along in years," noting that "Adès drew a textured, glittering and suspenseful account of his opera from the great Met orchestra." The Financial Times lauded the performance's "rare virtuosity... Keenlyside sang with sensitive force... [and] loomed and brooded magnetically."

SAT 21:15 Between the Ears (b01pd3jq)
My Life in the Ghosts of Bush

Bush House, once the buzzing home of the BBC World Service, now stands empty and silent, stripped of fixtures and fittings. Shortly before the building was handed back to its landlords, Between the Ears invited former Bush House broadcasters to revisit their offices and studios, for a final glimpse at significant spaces in their lives.

Yuri Goligorsky, formerly of the Russian Service, returns to the site of the Bush House dormitory, where night-shift presenters were offered a bed - although Yuri found the snoring unbearable. He also remembers one of the landmark programmes he produced - a phone-in with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, broadcast live to the Soviet Union.

Hamid Ismailov takes one last look at the small office where he was once the first and - at that time - only Uzbek in the building, and Michael Goldfarb recalls the unique sound-world of the building, with its many languages, signature tunes, and hardened smokers.

Between the Ears also hears Bush House memories from correspondent Mark Tully, Irini Roumboglou of the Greek Service, which was closed in 2005, and Najiba Kasraee, once of the Pashto Service. Bush House studio manager Robin Warren reveals how he captured and mixed the sounds of the building's marble stairwells, and composer and musician Matthew Herbert, now director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, reflects on Bush's unique sound world - and why it's vital to record it.

Producer John Goudie.

2012

Prom 71: St Louis Symphony

Another chance to hear one of the highlights of the 2012 Proms season.

Presented by Katie Derham

The St Louis Symphony Orchestra makes its Proms debut, under Music Director David Robertson. Brahms's dramatic overture opens the programme, followed by Beethoven's challenging and energetic Violin concerto, with Christian Tetzlaff, a soloist who has made regular appearances at the Proms.

These two composers are at the pinnacle of Western music, and the next composer, Schoenberg, venerated both of them. He argued that his own new way of composing followed logically on from these greats. Gershwin may seem an unlikely pairing with Schoenberg, but both became firm friends when living in Hollywood, sharing an interest painting and tennis.

Brahms: Tragic Overture
Beethoven: Violin Concerto
Schoenberg: Five Pieces for Orchestra
Gershwin: An American in Paris

Christian Tetzlaff (violin)

SUN 18:30 Words and Music (b01pd3n8)
Perchance to Dream

Freud argued that dreams could be interpreted, and for many literary characters, such as Winston in 1984 and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina the dream is used as a device to reveal the character's true or subconscious feelings. Nightmares are also well represented, with chilling passages from Moby-Dick and Wuthering Heights. There are also aspirational dreams from real people such as Churchill and George Mallory, and literary figures; Jude the Obscure is desperate to escape his miserable life through learning, while Rebecca Sharp sees a rich husband as her salvation. Prophetic and opium-induced dreams also feature, alongside music by Mendelssohn, Berlioz, Stravinsky and Handel. Extracts are read by Sophie Thompson and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Producer - Ellie Mant.

SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature (b01pd3nb)
Stop Calling Me 'Doctor Sex'

Matthew Sweet uncovers the extraordinary career of Dr Alex Comfort, author of The Joy of Sex.

By the time of his death in 2000, Comfort's 1972 sex manual had sold over 12 million copies. It was one of the big, mainstream best-sellers that made the liberalisation of sexual mores an accepted part of British life. But at the end of his life, Comfort regretted that the success of this one book had obscured his rich range of work in other areas - from poetry to gerontology, broadcasting to anarchism. In this programme, Matthew Sweet argues that by forgetting who this man really was, we've also lost sight of the true influences that shaped his blockbuster book.

Matthew begins in the childhood garden where, aged 15, Comfort blew off four fingers making fireworks. Far from letting the accident get in his way, he resolved to become a writer, publishing the first of his many books while still in his teens. Comfort became a pacifist and, during the Second World War, he not only refused to fight but conducted a controversial campaign against the bombing of German cities. He argued publicly with George Orwell about the right thing to do if the Nazis invaded. And he was also ruled out of broadcasting on the wartime BBC - though that didn't stop him becomnig a prolific broadcaster in the 1960s.

After the war, he was a leading anti-nuclear activist, at one stage briefly going to prison over a planned protest. Yet all the time he was formulating the ideas that form the basis of The Joy of Sex, which have their roots in his anarchism. An anarchist, he argued, was not a 'bomb-thrower' but someone who resisted the power of those in authority and insisted instead on personal responsibility. His early factual writing on sex began as a talk for fellow-anarchists in the late 1940s. And all the while, Comfort was pursuing a separate scientific career as a gerontologist, helping to pioneer the study of old age. Tragically, his own last years were anything but the 'Good Age' he envisaged for others. Yet, Matthew argues, almost all Comfort's varied labours seem to stem from his drive to struggle against limits - from the loss of his fingers to the power of the wartime state, from sexual repression to the prejudice against the old.

With contributions from: Nicholas Comfort, Tom Arie, Michael Randle, Christopher Turner, David Goodway, DJ Taylor, Carissa Honeywell.

Producer: Phil Tinline.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b01pd4q6)
Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936)

Episode 1

Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) remains one of the most popular - and controversial - Italian composers of the 20th century: a man caught in time between the high Romantic drama of his predecessors Verdi and Puccini, and the Futurism and avant-garde musical experiments of his later compatriots Dallapiccola, Berio and Scelsi.

Respighi chose a different route - his work often infused with the music of a halcyon past. Many of Respighi's work look back to the Italian Baroque - some even to Gregorian chant. Yet they remain charmingly, distinctively blended with his own 20th-century musical language. Respighi's "Roman Trilogy" - comprising the colourful orchestral pieces "Fountains of Rome", "Pines Of Rome" and "Roman Festivals" - are amongst the most-performed concert showpieces of the last 100 years, and notoriously were among Benito Mussolini most cherished pieces of music. Yet his other works are largely unknown to the general public.

This week Donald Macleod - like Respighi - takes a path less trodden as he presents a series of lesser-known masterpieces from the pen of this Italian master.

In the first programme of the week, he explores Respighi's rise to fame in the first decade of the 20th century, and his relationship with his lifelong muse, his wife Elsa.

TUE 00:00 A Peal for New Year's Day (b018mp23)
We ring in the New Year with Howard Skempton's piece for church bells, Five Rings Triples, played by the bell-ringers of All Saints Church, Kingston upon Thames.

This piece was one of 20 new works, collectively called New Music 20X12, commissioned to celebrated the talent and imagination of the UK's musical community as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Howard Skempton had never composed for church bells before, but he was fascinated by the old English tradition of "method ringing" and he has always found the sound of church bells magical. This piece is constructed according to the traditional rules of bell-ringing, and its title reflects both the structure of the piece and the interlocking rings of the Olympic logo.

First broadcast in 2012.

Salley Vickers

Miss Garnet's Angel, the story of an atheistic, uptight woman who flourishes during a winter spent among the churches and art of Venice, became an instant bestseller. Her succeeding novels, including Mr Golightly's holiday and The Other Side Of you, also have a spiritual dimension, featuring angels, Old Testament prophets - and God. Even so religion's arch-critic Philip Pullman describes her as "a presence to be cherished." Listen to "Belief" and you 'll understand why.

Prom 69: Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra

Another chance to hear one of the highlights of the 2012 Proms season.

Presented by Penny Gore

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly in their second Prom perform Messiaen's dramatic 1964 memorial to the dead of two world wars, Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, and Mahler's 6th Symphony which is a similarly wide-ranging soundscape moving from death-portending hammer-blows to alpine cow-bells. It also contains one of Mahler's most glorious slow movements.

Together with the Turangalila Symphony, Messiaen's Et Expecto is one of his most often performed orchestral works. It is on a vast canvas with a wide dynamic range, full of orchestral effects and apocalyptic gongs. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. Riccardo Chailly has been their conductor since 2005.

Prom 14: Kronos Quartet

Another chance to hear one of the highlights of the 2012 Proms season.

Presented by Andrew McGregor

The Kronos Quartet makes its Proms debut with a typically eclectic Late Night programme which ranges from from Syrian folk-pop via Sofia Gubaidulina's Fourth Quartet to one based on 'Amazing Grace.'

For almost 40 years, the Kronos Quartet has been reinventing the string quartet, regularly turning it into a multimedia experience. The group's first Proms appearance begins with high-octance Syrian folk-pop and ends with a Kronos commission blending classical strings with ethnic Balkan instruments, shouts, foot-stomping, bells and electronic overdubs.

In between, varied fare from the group's eclectic repertoire plus a BBC commission inspired by the work of Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (responsible for the realisation of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme). Listen out, too, for the otherworldly Kronos arrangement of a Scandinavian folk lament.

Omar Souleyman, arr. Jacob Garchik: I'll Prevent the Hunters from Hunting You (La sidounak sayyada) (UK premiere)

One of the great musical partnerships is celebrated tonight, as the pianist Murray Perahia joins conductor Bernard Haitink and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, undoubtedly the most personal - and radical - of the five. Bruckner's monumental last symphony also promises to be a highlight of this year's Proms. Bernard Haitink is one of the great interpreters of this profoundly spiritual music, and Bruckner himself described the Vienna Philharmonic as "the most superior" orchestra.

Prom 38: National Youth Jazz Orchestra

Another chance to hear one of the highlights of the 2012 Proms season.

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

The youthful members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra conducted by Mark Armstrong perform a wide-ranging set, from Jazz classics through to a new work by Tim Garland.

Founded in the mid-1960s the NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country's best young jazz musicians with many of the current generation of top British jazz players having risen through its ranks. Known for their unique swinging big band sound they have always played a mix of classics and new works. In tonight's late-night Prom they perform compositions by Ellington and Monk through to contemporary pieces including the premiere of a new work by Tim Garland called 'Agro Alegria' described by its composer as 'almost a ballad' based on a dance rhythm from the flamenco tradition, with the word 'Agro' having the double meaning of planting and growing, but also a reference to the youthful rowdiness of the NYJO members.
