SAT 12:15 Music Feature (b0150d9r)
The Hands of the Composer

Iain Burnside muses on the idea of how hands, fingers, thumbs and their use have directly affected Western keyboard composition.

Pianist Stephen Hough, composer Huw Watkins and critic Bryce Morrison join in with their insights into how the physiology of great composers' hands had an impact on the music that they wrote and the various challenges performers face as a result.

Includes music by Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Ligeti.

Interesting Facts from the programme:
Beethoven's hands were heavy and muscular.
Weber had astonishingly long thumbs.
The extreme length of Rachmaninov's fingers has led some experts to postulate that he had Marfan's syndrome, a genetic condition.
Chopin's hands were so elastic and flexible that when he extended them they prompted one of his pupils to remark that they resembled "the opening mouth of a serpent, about to swallow a rabbit whole."
Schumann permanently damaged his right hand in attempting to build the strength and independence of his fingers on a mechanical device. This ended his virtuoso piano career but fortuitously led to him spending more time composing.

Music: Music includes great pianist-composers, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninov, works by tragically frustrated pianists Schumann and Scriabin through Schoenberg and Stravinsky to finish with the ultimate challenge for contemporary pianists, the phenomenally difficult etudes of non-pianist György Ligeti.

Quotes from programme:

"Stravinsky made no secret about writing at the piano. There are so many chords, for example the first chord in the Symphony of Psalms that has a tenth in both hands. You can just imagine Stravinsky sitting down at the piano and his fingers falling into this position. You can feel that sometimes his hands are doing the composing, or at least having a hand in it."
Huw Watkins, composer

"The last three fingers of the right hand were his Divas"
Stephen Hough, pianist, on Chopin

"Thomas Adés is blessed with enormous hands. He can stretch an eleventh with many notes in between, which I can't quite do. I can stretch a tenth and I know that it's difficult to resist writing huge meaty chords and Tom certainly doesn't in his piano writing!"
Huw Watkins

"Scriabin was obsessed with his hands. When he wasn't stretching them, he was washing them."
Iain Burnside

"The patterns that Faure writes are quite unlike anyone else's and they suggest a certain sort of hand. If you look at, for example, the 3rd Valse Caprice, it looks in some ways like other people's music and then you try and you think: 'I'm going to have to start learning the piano all over again!' It all sounds easy, which is again irritating - no one has any idea that you're making an enormous effort."
Bryce Morrison

SAT 14:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b014qskb)
Till Fellner

The Vienna-born pianist Till Fellner has made a considerable reputation playing music from the Austro-German tradition and in this live concert from London's Wigmore Hall he begins with one of Haydn's finest and wittiest sonatas. Schumann's 'Scenes from Childhood' contain some of the little pieces that many a young pianist has tackled - but the complete set manages to be both sparkling and touching. Finally in this, his bicentennial year, the music of Liszt. The Petrarch Sonnets form part of his so-called 'Year of Pilgrimage' to Italy, when he was deeply moved by the writings of the great 14th-century poet. Liszt repsonds with music of great passion and tenderness.

SAT 18:45 Opera on 3 (b0150dd0)
Gounod's Faust

Granted, the plot's not up to much. Cursed by her brother, the virginal Marguerite is left pregnant, miserable, mad and seemingly beyond redemption by the ageing Faust who's made a devilish pact to exchange his soul for youth. All's well that ends well though, because by close of play Marguerite has been borne up to heaven by a chorus of angels. But when has an implausible story ever been a problem for an opera? Because what matters about Gounod's 'Faust' (and what has kept it in the repertoire for over 150 years) is a succession of showstoppers, including solo numbers (the famous Jewel Song among them), ensembles and choruses. What 'Faust' needs is a stellar cast, which is what we get in this revival of David McVicar's Royal Opera House production broadcast live from Covent Garden. It's led by Angela Gheorghiu as Marguerite who's joined by a trio of fetching men. The young Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo plays the vile seducer of the title role, the charismatic bass René Pape is the diabolical Méphistophélès who makes Faust an offer he can't refuse, and smouldering Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky is Valentin, the brother Marguerite could live without.

Presented by Louise Fryer in conversation with Claire Launchbury.

Followed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's performance of the work, conducted by Jonathan Nott.

But he was also a towering figure in his own country's music, pioneering both jazz rock and world music influences on jazz. Tom Perchard joins Alyn Shipton to explore the high points in Wilen's recorded repertoire.

SUN 12:00 Private Passions (b0150dwc)
Simon Mawer

Michael Berkeley's guest this week is the novelist Simon Mawer, whose most recent novel, 'The Glass Room, was shortlisted for the 2009 Booker Prize. Born into a military family, he spent part of his childhood moving around the Mediterranean, and has lived in Italy for three decades. He began his career as a biology teacher before turning to full-time writing, and two of his books, including the 1997 novel 'Mendel's Dwarf', reveal an intense interest in genetics. 'The Gospel of Judas' has a Middle Eastern setting; 'Swimming to Ithaca' (2006) was inspired by his childhood experiences in Cyprus during the EOKA period, and 'The Fall' (2003) sprang from his own experiences as a rock climber. 'The Glass Room', inspired by an iconic 1920s house, returns to the central European setting of Brno, where Mendel also did his ground-breaking research.

Simon Mawer's music choices begin with a piece by Hildegard of Bingen, an exemplar of medieval faith expressed through music. They continue with an extract from Mozart's Mass in C minor, K427, which represents faith turned into art suitable for the concert hall. Beethoven's Piano Sonata in C minor, Op.111 is for Simon Mawer the most remarkable piece of abstract art, while George Antheil's Ballet mecanique stands for one of the most significant artistic movements of the 20th century - Dadaism. His remaining choices are connected with place - works by Janacek and Vitezslava Kapralova, the young Czech female composer who died tragically young in 1940, remind him of Brno; Leo Ferre's song 'Paname' is about the 'real' Paris that the tourists don't see; while Duke Ellington's Mood Indigo, created in new Orleans, was transported to Paris by Sidney Bechet.

Christian Gerhaher Sings Die schone Mullerin

Presented by Catherine Bott

Baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist Gerold Huber perform Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin at the Wigmore Hall.

Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin is a familiar landmark in the song repertoire, but in 1824 it was groundbreaking: the first hour-long song narrative to have been presented to the public in any form. The simplicity of Müller's poems was matched by Schubert with music redolent of love and loss.

SUN 19:45 Sunday Feature (b0151p3k)
Out in the World - A Global Gay History

Episode 2

In the second programme in Radio 3's landmark series telling the global story of gay identity, Richard Coles travels to Greece to re-discover the ancient culture in which homoerotic love was part of a social code.

Alongside exploring familiar and, according to modern scholarship, hopelessly over-simplified images of pederastic relationships between older and younger men Richard travels to the plain of Chaeronea where the famous Sacred Band of Thebes fought and died. The Band, a military unit made up of same-sex lovers, were wiped out in combat against the Macedonian forces of Philip and his son Alexander in 338BCE. The Lion monument that overlooks the site of the slaughter speaks of an attitude towards the Sacred Band at odds with our modern feminised view of homosexuality.

Richard then explores the impact of the Abrahamic monotheistic religions beginning with the Mosaic laws of Judaism. The fierce prohibition that 'thou shalt not sleep with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination' has echoed down the centuries. Equally the Qur'an stories of Lot and his rejection by the people of Sodom appears unequivocal. But how did the early Islamic, Judaic and Christian societies react to these texts and what are we to make of the Hebrew and Arabic homoerotic poetry of the early medieval period?

Christianity seems to have been the most enthusiastic critic of same-sex relations but even here the judgements and images are rarely as clear cut as the Biblical call for the death sentence for transgressors.

Producer: Tom Alban

MON 22:00 Night Waves (b0151pq9)
New Generation Thinkers

Rana Mitter presents a special programme unleashing the winners of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Thinkers scheme.

In June 2010, ten early career academics were identified by BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council in a competition to bring new voices, fresh thinking and original ideas to broadcasting.

In this special edition of Night Waves Rana grills six of the winners. He investigates the increasing popularity of fan fiction and examines some of the moral and quality control issues that arise when fans co-opt a well known piece of fiction - from Don Quixote to Harry Potter.

And Alexandra Harris will be in the studio to discuss her new biography of Virginia Woolf. Seventy years after her death why does she continue to speak to new readers today?

Rana also discovers why Darwin is being touted as today's most influential economic thinker and why literature written from a child's perspective is all the rage in Africa, including an interview with author Ellen Banda Aaku.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b0151pqc)
Aspects of Grainger

The Great Original

Mention the musician Percy Grainger and many people will still only associate him with his greatest commercial success, "Country Gardens", leading to Grainger all too frequently being dismissed as a composer of light music.

This series of the "The Essay" marks the fiftieth anniversary of Grainger's death with programmes devoted to the Australian-born composer and pianist, his music and his sometimes eccentric personal life. British composer Julian Anderson has long been a devotee of Grainger's music and in this programme he considers Grainger's importance and originality, his influences, including his fascination with many different types of music, both old and new and traditional musics from around the world as well as folk and jazz. .

Grainger had such a diversity of creative interests, many of which influenced or were reflected in his own music, that he is almost impossible to pigeon-hole. Like Charles Ives and Edgard Varese, Grainger was an independent spirit and one of the most stylistically unpredictable composers in history. Julian Anderson feels that the time has come for a major reassessment of Grainger's importance.

Produced by Jeremy Hayes for Potton Hall Productions.

Since 2006, his trio has combined individual virtuosic brilliance with collective groove and lyricism. It features Yuri Goloubev, former professional orchestral bassist and a member of Gwilym Simcock's trio; and drummer Asaf Sirkis, also known for his work with Tim Garland and Gilad Atzmon.

TUE 20:10 Discovering Music (b015bt2w)
Liszt: Piano Sonata in B minor

Wagner was an enthusiast, but it apparently sent Brahms to sleep. These days, Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor is regarded as one of the pinnacles of the piano repertoire, difficult for listeners and monumentally challenging for the pianist. There has been 150 years of disagreement about its structure and its form - is it in one section? Three sections? Four sections? What's it about? Some suggest it's based on the Faust legend. Others say it represents the story of the Garden of Eden. Or perhaps it's biographical. It's one of the most discussed and analyzed pieces of music ever written. This week on Discovering Music, Stephen Johnson gets to grips with Liszt's masterpiece, before a live performance by Nelson Goerner at Wigmore Hall.

And what can past medical breakthroughs teach us about future medical advances? Philip is joined by Helen Bynum, the editor of a new collection of Great discoveries in Medicine, and medical historian Ruth Richardson to discuss.

TUE 22:45 The Essay (b0151q5s)
Aspects of Grainger

Grainger and Folksong

In the early years of the twentieth century composer Percy Grainger travelled around Britain with a phonograph recording rural folksingers. As a musical anthropologist Grainger was looking for authentically rustic, timeless melodic source material. Writer and Cheltenham Music Festival director, Meurig Bowen explores Grainger's passion for folksong, how he used it, how it influenced his music and how it compared with other composers' incorporation of folksongs. Might there have been something inherently condescending and exploitative about folksong collecting or was it a fear that, at a time of increasing industrialisation and migration off the land that if these tunes were not captured they could be lost forever?

The programme includes a fascinating recording, made by Grainger himself in 1906, of a folksong sung by a farm bailiff followed by what the song subsequently became in one of Graingers most poignant arrangements.

Produced by Jeremy Hayes for Potton Hall Productions

First broadcast in September 2011.

WED 22:45 The Essay (b0151r5p)
Aspects of Grainger

Grainger the Man

"If you want to understand the music of Percy Grainger, you need to understand the man - where he came from and what he was aiming at". Pianist and writer, Penelope Thwaites' recent research into composer Grainger's family and background has resulted in discoveries which shed intriguing new light on a man whom, Thwaites maintains is one of the least understood figures in musical history.

She outlines his life, beginning in Australia and ending in America, a piano virtuoso mentioned in the company of Rachmaninov and Horowitz, a composer whose music reflected his own attitude to life: constantly setting himself new challenges. Grainger's mother played a pivotal role in his life and Thwaites deplores the subsequent vilification of her by many commentators. She touches on Grainger's private life and sado-masochistic practices and his establishment of a Grainger Museum in Melbourne into which he voluntarily put everything about his life.

And a new book about Down Syndrome explores how society's attitude towards the disability has moved from its racist roots to its being one of the most common reasons for abortion.

Aspects of Grainger

Grainger and the Voice

Baritone Stephen Varcoe has long been a champion of the vocal music of Australian-born composer Percy Grainger, having performed and recorded much of it. He talks about how he discovered this music, beginning with Grainger's folksong settings and choral works. Varcoe also makes a case for a reappraisal of Grainger's solo songs, which have been unjustly neglected - largely due to Grainger setting texts by writers who are now deeply unfashionable, particularly Rudyard Kipling - and makes suggestions for interpreting them based on his own performance experiences.

FRI 20:40 Twenty Minutes (b00tkmnq)
Learning to Swim

Taking his children to swimming lessons, Ian Sansom calculates that he has probably spent more time taking them to swimming lessons over the years than he has spent reading to them, playing with them or tending to their maths homework. What does it all mean? Of course it's useful as a means of avoiding drowning. In a very few cases it might result in a satisfying career path. It's an enjoyable leisure activity, and a way of keeping fit. But Ian suspects there's something more to it, and his reflections lead him to speculate on the wider meaning of swimming, on the many instances of significant swims and swimmers in film and literature, and on some of the figures who have swum through the pages of our literary canon. Taking his cue from WH Auden, Ian finds analogies between the act of swimming and the act of poetic organisation, and recognises in other writers and philosophers the impulse to swim as an escape into the imagination.

Diana Athill, the revered editor, novelist and memoirist writes and performs a new letter for the Verb and talks about her new book "Instead of a Book". It's a collection of the letters she's written over the past thirty years to her friend the American poet Edward Field.

There's more from The Verb's new voices, a scheme run between Radio 3 and the Arts Council, supporting emergent talent on the spoken poetry scene. This week we feature poets from Stockton and their mentors.

And as the Forward Poetry Prize celebrates twenty years since its inception, founder William Sieghart and previous winner Jane Duran discusses the effect of the prize, which rewards both established and up-and-coming poets.

Horatio Clare, who's making a name for himself as a nature writer, has taken to the sea. He's currently writer-in-residence for the Maersk shipping line and sailing over the South China Sea. On a ship-to-shore telephone line, Horatio tells Ian how he's being inspired by the solitude of sailing - just 19 seamen on a ship half a kilometre long - and talks about the language and place names of the sea.

FRI 22:45 The Essay (b0151s6m)
Aspects of Grainger

Grainger the Pianist

Percy Grainger was one of the most famous pianists of his time, being compared to Rachmaninov and Horowitz. Grieg proclaimed that he'd had to wait until he was in his sixties to hear his own music played with such understanding and brilliance and he and Grainger went on to collaborate on the performance and an edition of Grieg's Piano Concerto. Pianist Lucy Parham enthuses about Grainger's recordings on 78s which are a revelation, as two short extracts demonstrate. His repertoire was characteristically idiosyncratic, as were his views on certain composers. He as known as "the Golden Pianist", for his good looks as well as his seemingly faultless technique and matchless sound.

Produced by Jeremy Hayes for Potton Hall Productions

First broadcast in September 2011.
