The programme also includes part of an archive interview with Henderson.

Joe Henderson's career falls into two distinct parts, his early days as a young lion, recording with the cream of 1960s modern jazz players for Blue Note, and his remarkable comeback after his celebrated trio disc "The State of the Tenor" in 1985, which led to a new international touring career. He discusses this later stage of his career with Alyn Shipton in a Radio 3 interview from the mid-1990s and the rest of his catalogue is assessed by Julian Siegel, a frequent UK poll winner who has been greatly influenced by Henderson.

David Bintley

Michael Berkeley's guest this week is David Bintley, Artistic Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and one of Britain's finest choreographers. He started out as a dancer, and one of his early leading roles with the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet (now the Birmingham Royal Ballet) was Stravinsky's puppet Petrushka - a role that made huge physical demands, as he tells Michael Berkeley. He made a name as a character dancer - other major roles included Widow Simone in Frederick Ashton's 'La fille mal gardee', Bottom in 'The Dream', an Ugly Sister in Ashton's 'Cinderella', the Red King in Ninette de Valois' 'Checkmate' and the Rake in her 'Rake's Progress'.

David Bintley always wanted to be a choreographer since he made his first ballet aged 16 to Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale, and at 18 he made his debut as a choreographer for the Sadler's Wells company. From 1986 to 1993 he was resident choreographer at Covent Garden, and then left to work freelance for companies around the world. in 1995 he was appointed Artistic Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, where his work has ranged from Far from the Madding Crowd (1996) and Cyrano (1997) to popular hits such as The Nutcracker Sweeties, mingling classical ballet wirh jazz; the jazz-inspired reinterpretation of the Orpheus legend in 'The Orpheus Suite'; 'Cinderella', and 'Beauty and the Beast'. His double bill 'Passion and Ecstasy', combining 'Carmina burana', based on Orff's cantata, and 'Allegri diversi', based on Rossini, is currently playing at Birmingham.

His personal music choices range from Mahler's Resurrection Symphony to a dance from Petrushka, the end of Act II of Verdi's 'Otello', an extract from Britten's 'Prince of the Pagodas' and works by James MacMillan, Bob Dylan and Matthew Hindson.

Money

Samuel West makes his radio directorial debut with a new adaptation by Kate Clanchy of Edward Bulwer-Lytton's vibrant and good-hearted satirical comedy. The play was recorded on location at Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, the stately home of Edward Bulwer-Lytton, which he inherited in 1843 shortly after writing 'Money'.
Stars Roger Allam, Celia Imrie and Ian McDiarmid.
The music, specially recorded for the play, is performed by the Endellion String Quartet.

Kate Clanchy's adaptation re-fashions the action around one grand house, modernises the heroine, Clara, and sets the action just before the 1832 Reform Act to accentuate the political plot.

'Money' was first performed at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, in 1840. It was an instant success and the play's social commentary, genteel comedy and high romance still resonate and charm today.

SUN 21:35 Sunday Feature (b00tmldk)
Tracking the Aryans

Historian Bettany Hughes uncovers the troubled story of the search for the ancient Aryans, and journeys to Siberia to find out how recent archaeological discoveries are bringing them renewed attention.

Nowadays associated with the Nazi ideology of a blond blue-eyed master race, the term Aryan was once used to refer to the speakers of a prehistoric language from which the modern Indo-European Language family is descended (including, among others, English, German, Latin, Greek, Farsi and Hindi). But the name's origins lie in the ancient texts of Bronze Age Iran and North India.

Archaeologists on the remote borders of Siberia and Kazakhstan have recently uncovered a series of unexpectedly sophisticated prehistoric settlements. Within, they have discovered unusually complex burial rituals and the earliest known chariots in the world. Could this Steppe culture be the origin of the Aryans of Iran and North India? And what can it tell us about the origin of Indo-European languages?

Bettany travels to the Siberian Steppe to the ancient circular fortified town of Arkaim to find out. And witnesses how even today the Aryans are being used for modern political ends.

Charlie Watts, Breach at the 2011 Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Gil Scott Heron Tribute

Plus concert music from jazz trio Breach and vocalist Ian Shaw recorded at the launch of this year's Glasgow International Jazz Festival. The music was recorded at BBC Scotland's headquarters at Pacific Quay in Glasgow on Friday 13th May. Their highly inventive brand of melodic music mixes elements of Eastern folk traditions with the spirit of free jazz and progressive rock creating a melting pot of sounds. Pianist and vocalist Ian Shaw's set is full of humour, panache and vocal gymnastics proving he is still one of the most vital performing artists in the landscape of the UK jazz scene. Shaw's collaborators over the past few years have included Quincy Jones, Abudullah Ibrahim, Guy Barker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Iain Ballamy, Mornington Lockett, Barb Jungr, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Cedar Walton, Joe Lovano and Claire Martin. This year's Glasgow International Jazz Festival runs from 29th June until the 3rd of July. Jackson, Byrd, Dove

Live from Christ Church Spitalfields as part of the Spitalfields Festival

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

The Gabrieli Consort combines the Tudor splendour of William Byrd's 'Great Service' with two new works by Jonathan Dove.

William Byrd's monumental Great Service, acknowledged as the crowning point of unaccompanied church music during the 16th century, is interspersed in this programme, by works from contemporary British composers. The programme includes the world premiere of two pieces by Jonathan Dove, whose sensitivity to words and desire to exploit the beauty of choral sound contrasts and complements the complexity of Byrd's celebrated masterpiece.

MON 20:15 Twenty Minutes (b01222wl)
Summer Over England

Between the two halves of tonight's concert, poet Nigel Forde presents a seasonal reflection. Summer more than any other time of year is richly represented in the recordings held in the BBC Archive. 'Summer Over the British Isles' was a famous 1937 feature programme evoking the moment when the country could perhaps relax a little, ease its braces and its stays, and stretch out in the long grass ...and hope it wouldn't rain.

It was also a vaguely patriotic and - with hindsight - prophetic programme capturing an era that was about to be blown apart by the off-stage murmurs of war from Europe. But there's much more - Laurie Lee recalling the 'Hill Cricket' played on summer days in the Cotswold villages of his youth, Alistair Cooke describing a day at Lords and that other immortal voice of cricket, John Arlott, recalling long shadows and steepling catches. Vita Sackville-West describes the joys of great summer gardens; Henry Williamson forsakes otters to hymn the beauty of Devon and we catch the sound of conflict in 1964 when Britain's seaside became a battleground for disaffected youngsters...

Producer: Simon Elmes.

MON 22:00 Night Waves (b011y87c)
Margaret Drabble, Watts Gallery, Authenticity on the Internet, Forests, Rocks, Torrents

One of the country's major literary figures, Margaret Drabble talks to Matthew about her collected short stories, "A day in the Life a Smiling Woman", published for the first time in a single volume. She discusses the way in which the chronology of the stories tracks the path of feminism over the last half century.

Matthew is given a tour of the newly reopened Watts Gallery in Surrey, dedicated to the art of the celebrated Victorian artist, George Frederic Watts, one of the great painters of the Victorian age.

Following the controversy surrounding the "The Gay Girl in Damascus" blog, which was revealed to have been written by an American man, we discuss what the concept of authenticity on the internet really means.

And Matthew dons his walking gear to explore the new exhibition of landscape painting at the National Gallery, 'Forests, Rocks, Torrents'. The exhibition aims to introduce a British audience, familiar with the British tradition seen in the work of Turner and Constable, to the great landscape paintings in other parts of Europe.

That's Night Waves with Mathew Sweet on Radio 3 tonight at 10pm.

MON 22:45 The Essay (b00sbx30)
The King Returned

Episode 1

The first of five programmes in which Jonathan Sawday paints a picture of Restoration Britain in five essays: the politics, the science, the culture and the philosophy which made this an extraordinary period of history.

In May 1660 Charles II was invited to return to England and take the throne lost by his beheaded father. A dozen years of Puritan rule were overthrown with a resuming of vigorous cultural life. There was an ebullient outpouring of baroque music, liberated playwriting, scientific progress, stately architecture and courtly entertainment that became known as The Restoration.

But in the 1660s how much was really "restored" of pre-Cromwellian Britain - and how much was actually newly introduced? How much that was restored had really never gone away?

Professor Jonathan Sawday attempts to retell the story of the Restoration in a new way - through five essays, each of which provide a shapshot of cultural and intellectual life.

Caricatured as excessive in today's costume drama, this was a time that was also energetic, experimental and outward looking. From the foundation of the Royal Society, to the construction of St. Paul's, to the new contractual nature of government - this was a period which marks the creation of crucial aspects of modern Britain.

Producer: Hannah Godfrey and Matthew Dodd.

TUE 12:00 Composer of the Week (b01206hy)
British Light Music

Episode 2

Tuesday's programme explores the theme 'Music and movement', in a sequence of pieces reflecting light music's fascination with different modes of transport. Composers from Charles Williams to Richard Rodney Bennett have capitalized on the different rhythmic opportunities suggested by trains, planes, cars, horse rides - or even good old shanks's pony. There's also a discussion of the importance to light-music composers of 'library music'; much of the music familiar to us from signature tunes started life as publishers' commissions, with no specific end use in mind. Presented by Donald Macleod.

OAE - Haydn, Mozart

Live from the Royal Festival Hall, London

Presented by Martin Handley

Sir Simon Rattle continues his fruitful relationship with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in this concert of Classical symphonies and an effervescent Mozart concerto. Seated at the two pianos in the concerto will be the world-renowned partnership of Katia and Marielle Labeque.

The two Haydn symphonies which book-end the programme show him being adventurous and inventive. The nickname for the A major symphony is his own, referring to the slow movement where time does indeed change and shift in this highly original piece. His Symphony no.95 is dramatic and forceful - the composer keen perhaps to make a good impression on the public in London for his first trip to the city.

Elegance, grace and refinement are to the fore in Mozart's concerto for two pianos, which he composed for his sister Nannerl and himself to play together. These qualities are also present in his B flat Symphony, written in the same year.

With Sarah Walker. This week we've chosen a handful of recordings from one of the pioneers of period instrument performance, the harpsichordist and conductor Trevor Pinnock. This week we are featuring some of his best loved recordings with the English Concert including concertos by Vivaldi and Corelli, Symphonies by Mozart and Haydn, choral works by Purcell and operatic excerpts from Gluck and Handel. The King Returned

Episode 5

Jonathan Sawday paints a picture of Restoration Britain, on the return of Charles II to the throne in 1660. Why did the idea of the contract become so pervasive in society?

The King may have been invited home to his rightful place, but some things had changed for good. After 1649, any king had to be aware of the idea of a contract of with his people. After all, that was philosopher Thomas Hobbes' defence of monarchy in the 1650s - and it culminated at the end of this period with John Locke's famous Social Contract and the 1688 Glorious Revolution. Jonathan tells the story of why the idea of the contract become so pervasive in political and mercantile Restoration society.
