SAT 22:00 Between the Ears (b011cgml)
Anatomising a Portrait: An Epileptic Journey

Wander the rooms of London's National Portrait Gallery and amongst pictures of the great and the good you will come across a new display - radical in approach and subject.

Artist Susan Aldworth was commissioned to make a series of artworks reflecting epilepsy for St Thomas' Hospital in Westminster, now on display. In the pursuit of one portrait in particular she placed centre-stage her close friend Max Eilenberg and we follow her on this journey.
Through audio diaries and interviews with Max, we hear her become closer to her subject and her friend. She talks with him about philosophical notions of personal identity in relation to the impact of the absences which define epilepsy.

"If you're blind, you're blind. You don't have blindness. If you've got a cold, you've got a cold. You are not cold. I have got epilepsy and I am epileptic. It's a constituent part of me in the same way as if I'd been born with one leg." Max Eilenberg.

She also talks to neuroscientists and gets the chance to hear the sound of a seizure in the brain.
A haunting experience.
The sound of epilepsy is not a jagged rasping, not spikes of sound - but more like the sound of whale song, a plaintive cry for help, a call in the wild. How does an artist go about creating a work of art to reflect this?

Her own particular interest in the relationship of The Self to the physical brain came after seeing inside her own brain, real time, during a diagnostic brain scan ten years ago on Christmas Day.

Disturbing stuff. But just for a moment, share what it feels like to go through the devastation of a brain turning on its carrier.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall

First broadcast in May 2011.

Cathy Marston

Michael Berkeley's guest this week is Cathy Marston, Director of the Bern Ballet. She trained at the Royal Ballet School and began her career as a dancer before becoming a choreographer in the mid 1990s. She has worked with many international ensembles in the classical and contemporary dance fields, and in 2002 became the first Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House, where she created several ballets for the Linbury Theatre, and worked as movement director for opera productions. She then formed her own company, the Cathy Marston project, which toured the UK in 2006 with a triple bill of her own work. In 2007 she became the Director of the Bern Ballet in Switzerland, where she has created several new pieces, including 'Wuthering Heights', and 'Juliet and Romeo'. Many of her ballets are inspired by literature and biography, and she also creates shorter pieces that she calls 'dance poems'. The Bern Ballet is currently on tour and is appearing this week at the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House.

Cathy Marston's own musical choices include extracts from piano concertos by Shostakovich and Brahms, part of a Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra by Gabriel Prokofiev, with whom she has collaborated (this work is being performed in its entirety at this year's Proms), a song from Schumann's Liederkreis cycle, Nina Simone singing 'Wild is the Wind', the Katia Labeque Band performing 'Unspoken' by Dave Maric (another composer with whom Cathy Marston often collaborates), and Gus MacGregor's 'Lifeline', which always cheers her up.

Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth was Britain's most successful female sculptor of the twentieth century. Two years ago, a brand new art gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield opened in Yorkshire to showcase some of her plasters, alonside other contempoary art exhibitions. Historian Juliet Gardiner talks to those who knew Barbara Hepworth. Juliet visits Wakefield, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and St. Ives to talk to those who know Hepworth's work and speaks to her daughter, Lady Sarah Bowness, her granddaughter, Sophie Bowness and Hepworth's son-in-law, Sir Alan Bowness. Interwoven throughout the programme is archive of the artist herself.

She was born in 1903 and won a musical scholarship to Wakefield Girls school. A woman with artistic hands who declared as a teenager that she wanted to be a sculptor. An unusual choice too back then with no female role models in the sculpture world.

As a young girl, she would enjoy going on drives with her father through the rolling Yorkshire countryside and spoke often of how the undulating landscape informed some of her sculptures. She won a scholarship to Leeds Art School at the age of sixteen and met fellow sculptor Henry Moore there. Together they journeyed south to London and studied at the Royal College of Art.

Hepworth went on a travel scholarship to Italy after the RCA and this reinforced her desire to be a carver. She came back married to fellow sculptor, John Skeaping and they settled down in studios in Hampstead. Her first born son, Paul became the model for one of her popular early wooden carvings, 'Infant'.

She later married artist Ben Nicholson and in 1934 they became parents to triplets. There's the Cyril Connolly quote: "the pram in the hallway is the enemy of creativity" - they now had three prams and the couple put the triplets into a nearby nursery whilst they carried on with their art. They were both now leading lights in the emerging modernist movement.

They decided that with war imminent to leave London and drove to stay with a friend in St. Ives with the triplets and a nanny. For Hepworth, it was to be her home for the rest of her life. Her work is in private and public collections all over the world with her largest work, Single Form, standing outside the United Nations in New York.

In the past two years, many visitors have had the chance to see her working methods at the Hepworth Wakefield.

Producer: Sarah Taylor

First broadcast in May 2011.

SUN 22:15 Words and Music (b011cjkz)
The Gothic

This week Words and Music takes you into the darkened, turreted recesses of The Gothic. From the surreal, macabre beginnings of the genre in Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto to the tortured wanderings of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; the gothic literary world is one of dark passions and ominous thrills. Work by Coleridge and Keats shows the romantic impulse which was extended and darkened by later gothic writing, arriving in the late nineteenth century at Oscar Wilde's haunting Picture of Dorian Gray. Musically, we venture back to the 12th century with the work of Pérotin who composed amidst the gothic splendour of Notre Dame cathedral, as well as pieces by Bach, Berlioz, Paganini and Rachmaninov.

Today we play a world-premiere recording of a work that caused its composer great anguish from its conception to its first performance. Although the 1868 premiere of Parry's Symphony No.1 was under-rehearsed and had to be abandoned, when the piece was performed again later that year, Parry conducted to great applause. Showing influences of both Schumann and Wagner, it's a fine first symphonic attempt and one that is served faithfully in this groundbreaking recording from the English Symphony Orchestra conducted by William Boughton.

Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach (1714-1788)

The Belligerent Flautist

The Belligerent Flautist

Imagine being JS Bach's son, growing up in a gigantic shadow with a great weight of expectation on your shoulders, and trying to earn a living as a composer. These days, almost inevitably, the career of Carl Philipp Emmanuel, Johann Sebastian's second son - and those of the other Bach children - are almost entirely obscured by the reputation of their father. But CPE Bach is the man of whom Mozart said, "he is the father, we are the children. Those of us who know anything at all learned it from him".

This week, Donald Macleod discovers that there's more to CPE Bach than his famous name. In Monday's programme, CPE finds a job at the court of the famously belligerent Frederick the Great of Prussia. When Frederick wasn't busy annexing parts of Europe, he liked nothing better than to play the flute, so an important part of CPE Bach's duties was to provide pieces for the king to perform, and to accompany him when he did. Music in the programme includes the Concerto for Flute in D minor, and an organ sonata written for Frederick's equally musical sister, Anna Amalia.

MON 19:30 Radio 3 Live in Concert (b011cjtb)
Ian Bostridge and Julius Drake at Wigmore Hall

Live from Wigmore Hall, London

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

Purcell's songs fascinated later English composers Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett and we hear arrangements by both of them in tonight's concert as well as two other works by Britten - his Bach setting 'Five Spiritual Songs' and songs from his cycle 'Who are these children?'. Haydn famously visited England twice and wrote a series of English songs for his aristocratic patrons including his only Shakespeare setting 'She never told her love' which sets verses from Twelfth Night. The concert ends with Weill's four Walt Whitman songs including 'Oh Captain! My Captain!' which transforms Whitman's famous cry of anguish at the assassination of Lincoln into song form.

Few conductors have done more for the early music revival than Sir John Eliot Gardiner. Today's recording of Handel's Water Music proves why. "Full of vitality and colour. This is period-instrument playing at its most stimulating and the sound-picture is vivid and clear", says the Penguin Guide to Classical Music. It's just the right approach for this well loved set of light orchestral movements, premiered on a barge in the summer of 1717 after King George I requested a concert on the River Thames.

Fathers and Sons

Fathers and Sons

"In composition and keyboard playing, I never had any other teacher than my father." It could so easily have gone horribly wrong: one of the greatest musical minds the world has ever known, teaching his musical offspring himself. But Johann Sebastian Bach clearly had very special qualities and seems to have remained on good terms with all of his children. In today's programme, Donald Macleod explores the relationship between CPE Bach and his famous father.

Immigration, Bob Dylan at 70, Evelyn Juers, Life, Above All

There are few subjects that attract more debate than immigration, and tonight Anne hears two very different perspectives on the subject - from controversial Dutch author Paul Scheffer and from former World Bank Vice President Ian Goldin, who believes that the merits of migration are underestimated.

As Bob Dylan turns 70, Anne discovers why his recent work still has meaning from singer Barb Jungr and English academic, Daniel Karlin.

Anne talks to the Australian author and publisher Evelyn Juers about her new book that blends fact and fiction to tell the forgotten story of Thomas Mann's brother Heinrich - and his Hollywood exile.

And a film that brought Cannes Film Festival critics to their feet - Life, Above All - the story of a 12 year-old girl growing up in an African township where AIDS is a shameful secret, and the real cause of death of her baby sister has to be concealed.

Our focus work today is Nights in the Gardens of Spain, Falla's fragrant depiction of three individual gardens lushly scored for piano and full orchestra. It's sensitively handled here by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its soloist Alicia de Larrocha, whose "ability to evoke the colour of the Spanish atmosphere is remarkable" says Gramophone Classical Music Guide in a review of this Penguin award-winning disc. Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos supports Larrocha superbly while the London Philharmonic Orchestra provides a hot-blooded accompaniment.

Considered by many to be one of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas, the Waldstein set the scene for future piano works, both by Beethoven and those he influenced. Full of the heroic grandeur that distinguishes the composer's middle period, and one of Beethoven's most technically challenging piano works, it's an ambitious undertaking for any pianist. In this recording Wilhelm Backhaus proves himself equal to the task, combining his characteristically objective, analytical approach with clean phrasing and great feeling. Small wonder he was so admired for his Beethoven interpretations during his lifetime.

In 1768 CPE Bach left Berlin after 30 years' service at the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia and started a new job in Hamburg, where he took over from his godfather, Telemann, as musical director of the city's five most prominent churches. Life was good - according to one visitor, "Bach has a talkative wife, a rather unattractive but well-mannered daughter, a son who is a lawyer, good wine and good beer". Donald Macleod finds out what life was like for the Bach family in the more commercial atmosphere of Hamburg, the biggest port and trading centre of the German lands.

Her First Ball

'Her First Ball' by Katherine Mansfield opens with Leila, a young unsophisticated country girl, nervous but excited on her way to her first formal ball with more cultured relatives.

Written in the tempo of a waltz, Mansfield conjures up the dreamlike, fairytale atmosphere of the ball, which is suddenly shattered when an older, fat dancing partner warns Leila that this is the beginning of the end of her young life, that now she will merely age, regretting her lost youth and beauty. For a moment, the magic is broken, but when another handsome young partner whisks her away, she returns to the thrill of the moment, to the joy of being young and free.

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) is widely considered one the masters of the short story, her much acclaimed stories include 'The Garden Party' and 'Bliss'. She was brought up in colonial New Zealand but moved to Britain in 1908 where she led a literary bohemian life among the influential writers of the time.

Although unjustly neglected in favour of his choral music, Parry's symphonies are well worth listening to. Among these, his Symphony No.5 in B minor "Symphonic Fantasia" stands out, combining the nobilmente of Elgar's symphonies and the gravity of Brahms. "The really clever, coherent thing about this close-knit piece - four movements linked as one - is the emotional memory that Parry carries forward with the development and transformation of his themes", wrote Edward Seckerson of the Independent when reviewing this work at the proms in 2010. The BBC Philharmonic provide a sensitive performance in the hands of Vassily Sinaisky.

The culmination of our series this week of Hubert Parry's five Symphonies coincides with a programme later today on BBC4 in which HRH The Prince of Wales will be exploring his love of the music of Parry and will be investigating his life and legacy.

A Very Remarkable and Famous Man

A Very Remarkable and Famous Man

Times were changing during the second half of the 18th century. A whole new group of people emerged - the middle class. They wanted to be entertained and to acquire the accomplishments of the gentry - playing the harpsichord and the like. For several centuries beforehand music had revolved around the church and the aristocracy, but no more. Composers had to take note of their new audience and CPE Bach immediately recognised the opportunities of a city full of amateur musicians. As he put it to a colleague, "in works that are intended for general consumption, be less abstruse and put in more sugar". Donald Macleod tells the story of CPE Bach's commercial success.

Strauss and Bruckner from St David's Hall, Cardiff

Live from St. David's Hall in Cardiff

Presented by Nicola Heywood Thomas

The "final thoughts" of two great German masters are explored by Principal Guest Conductor Jac van Steen with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Mezzo soprano Katarina Karneus returns to the hall where she won Cardiff Singer of the World in 1995 to perform the Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, capturing a mood of Olympian calm and serenity. Bruckner's powerful Ninth Symphony takes us on a dark and gripping journey, full of thunderous energy. It was left unfinished at the composer's death and closes with the slow movement which shares the same serenity as Strauss.

Jon McGregor, Laura Dockrill and Eva Salzman on Science Fiction, Laurie Stras on Chas'n' Dave and Cockney Song

Ian McMillan's cabaret of the word. Tonight's programme includes new short stories from Jon McGregor, the shortest of which is just ten words long. Jon's first novel, If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things was awarded the Betty Trask Prize and a Somerset Maugham award. His writing has been praised for its quiet but lyrical style, which captures the everyday world around us.

Laura Dockrill reads a letter to Dolly Parton - from Jolene's point of view.

Poet Eva Salzman, a self confessed science fiction nut as a teenager, visits the new Science Fiction exhibition at the British Library - and in thinking about other realities is inspired to write a new piece of fiction for the Verb.

And in the month that Chas 'n' Dave bow out of live performances, Ian and musicologist Laurie Stras discuss - is this the end of the Cockney Song?
