The late crime writer Michael Dibdin kicks off with Mozart's String Quartet in G, K387; then comes opera director Graham Vick, who was hard-pressed to narrow his Mozart choices down, but who eventually settled on a scene towards the end of 'The Magic Flute' . Psychologist and novelist Salley Vickers selected the slow movement of the Piano Concerto No.24 in C minor, K491; while actor Lenny Henry, political commentator Jonathan Dimbleby and Children's Laureate Michael Morpurgo all had different reasons for choosing the opening movement of the Piano Sonata in A, K331. Two recent award-winning writers, Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson, and Nobel laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, both selected extracts from Mozart's darkest and perhaps most psychologically disturbing opera, 'Don Giovanni'; while actor Simon Callow recalls his stage triumph as Mozart in Peter Shaffer's 'Amadeus', with the Adagio from the Serenade in B flat, K361, played to spine-tingling effect at the pivotal point of the drama. The Genius of Mozart

Grand Tour Day: Lucio Silla

Mozart composed Lucio Silla for performance in Milan and though he was still only in his late teens he produced a work that stands comparison with anything written by his contemporaries. The story is set in Ancient Rome and tells of the dictatorial emperor Lucio Silla and his love for Giunia. She, however, is in love with and engaged to be married to the exiled senator Cecilio. In Act One Giunia shuns Silla. In Act Two plotters against the emperor or try to persuade Giunia to marry Silla and then murder him, but she refuses. Silla has Cecilio arrested and thrown into prison and he reminds Giunia that to refuse the Emperor means certain death. But in Act Three Cecilio's friend Cinna manages to persuade Silla to change his mind. He relents, agrees to Giunia and Cecilio's marriage - and even renounces the throne, admitting that 'a virtuous heart is more pleasing to the spirit than false splendour'. So love triumphs and all ends in rejoicing.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Ronald van Spaendonck

Elin Manahan Thomas presents a live concert from BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff as part of Radio 3's celebration of The Genius of Mozart.

Clarinettist Ronald van Spaendonck (a former New Generation Artist) joins the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for Mozart's last great instrumental composition. Written in 1791, it was created for Anton Stadler, a brilliant exponent of the clarinet - still a relatively new instrument at that time. It represents a culmination of all Mozart's great achievements in the concerto form, and has become one of the best-loved compositions in the entire classical repertoire. Richard Egarr is also Music Director of the Academy of Ancient Music, and today he conducts the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in Mozart's Symphony No. 38 - also known as the "Prague" symphony, where the first performance took place in January 1787. It's infused with shadowy overtones of Don Giovanni - the opera which Mozart wrote later that year. The symphony was an immediate success, and remained popular in the Bohemian capital for years to come.

Rob Cowan presents a Mozart selection.

Friday - Sarah Walker

Today Sarah's guest is Professor Paul Robertson, who led the Medici String Quartet for 34 years. He combines an international concert career with his passion for exploring musical responses in scientific research and the neurology of musicality. He has been particularly closely associated with the so-called "Mozart Effect" which came to prominence in the early 1980s, suggesting that listening to Mozart actually improved your mental health. Paul will be discussing the healing properties of Mozart's music, the pleasures and challenges of playing Mozart's chamber music, and discussing CDs of the Medici's Mozart recordings.

Escape from Salzburg

Donald Macleod maps out Mozart's life-story, plays many of his favourite works and trys to fathom why for him Mozart's music will always remain a constant companion. Today he looks at Mozart's ultimately futile first attempt to sever links with Salzburg, an excursion which left the young man bereaved and broken-hearted.

The Genius of Mozart

Mozart - Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail

Petroc Trelawny introduces a complete performance of Mozart's "Turkish" opera, Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, K384, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

Mozart wrote the Abduction from the Seraglio in 1781 just after he had moved to Vienna, a city that had been besieged by the Turkish armies less than 100 years before. Now with the threat from the Ottoman Empire a receding memory, Turkish settings and the spicy exotic sounds of Turkish military bands became all the rage for composers in Vienna and it was against this background that Mozart wrote his German language 'singspiel' for the city's Burgtheater.

It tells the story of a young nobleman Belmonte and his attempts to rescue his betrothed Konstanze and their servants Pedrillo and Blonde from the Palace of Pasha Selim and the clutches of the Pasha's henchman Osmin. However at the moment when Belmonte's plans go awry and the quartet are at the mercy of the Pasha the ruler's humanity and enlightenment shine through and the prisoners are set free.

Belmonte - Peter Schreier (tenor)
Konstanze - Yvonne Kenny (soprano)
Osmin - Matti Salminen (bass)
Blonde - Lillian Watson (soprano)
Pedrillo - Wilfried Gamlich (tenor)
Pasha Selim - Wolfgang Reichmann (speaking role)
