PSM 01 - Brandenburg Concertos

BBC Proms 2010

Live from Cadogan Hall, London

Presented by Catherine Bott

Proms Bach Day launches with the complete Brandenburg Concertos in two concerts given by the English Baroque Soloists and conductor John Eliot Gardiner. Written for the small orchestra of fine musicians at the court of Anhalt-Cöthen, where Bach was Kapellmeister for six years from 1717, each concerto uses a different line-up of musicians. "No other set of concertos" maintains Gardiner, "can compare with Bach's for diversity of instrument make-up, for the prominence and variety of wind instruments, or for the myriad textural contrasts this allows."

Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 in F major, BWV 1046
Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 in B flat major, BWV 1051
Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major BWV 1049

English Baroque Soloists
Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor).

SAT 16:00 Jazz Library (b00t6ymw)
Bix Beiderbecke

Despite a recording career that lasted only from 1924 to 1931, Bix Beiderbecke changed the way jazz soloists played. An influence on a par with Louis Armstrong or Sidney Bechet, his discs had an immediate and long-lasting effect.
Ian Smith joins Alyn Shipton to explore the legend of the tragically short-lived Beiderbecke, and to choose his key recordings, including his small group masterpieces "Singing the Blues" and "I'm Coming Virginia" plus his later work with the big bands of Jean Goldkette and Paul Whiteman. Beiderbecke's piano compositions are also discussed, and his pioneering use of the language of French impressionism in jazz.

Proms 38 - Bach Organ Music

BBC Proms 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

The mighty Father Willis organ of the Albert Hall is unleashed by David Briggs, Organist Emeritus at Gloucester Cathedral, for the third of today's Bach Proms. The programme starts with two contrasting original works for the instrument - a small-scale chorale prelude based on the Advent hymn "Sleepers Wake", preceded by the great Passacaglia in C minor: twenty-one variations and a fugue founded on a repeated bass line. Three pieces demonstrate the organ's traditional role playing transcriptions of orchestral works - a role extending back to Bach's own day - including the cantata movement 'Sheep may safely graze', and David Briggs's own arrangement of the best known of Bach's orchestral suites, including the popular 'Air on the G String'.

Bach: Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582
Bach: Chorale Prelude 'Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme', BWV 645
Bach, arr. Stainton B Taylor: Aria 'Schafe können sicher weiden', BWV 208
Bach, arr. Virgil Fox:'Komm, süsser Tod', BWV 478
Bach, arr. David Briggs:Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068

Proms Intro: Bach

The idea of performing Bach transcriptions is highly appealing to tonight's conductor Andrew Litton. In this Proms Intro for Bach Day, Sara Mohr-Pietsch asks him what makes a good transcription and why Bach's music has been re-imagined by so many other composers. Two young UK-based composers have reworked Bach themselves for this concert, and they give their insights into the musical process.

SAT 22:00 Between the Ears (b00pbwhf)
Melting Point

Melting Point explores both the human experience and musicality of ice as it melts.

This "composed feature" by Nina Perry (whose previous BBC productions include the acclaimed Sounding Post and Mirror, Mirror) explores the icy landscapes of Greenland, Iceland and the Highlands of Scotland through recordings of environmental sounds, interviews with people going about their day to day lives and gathered music that expresses cultural and emotional connections to the weather.

The winter thaw into spring is a time most often associated with renewal and hope, yet paradoxically in light of climate change melting ice has taken on the more ominous connotation of disappearing ice mass and rising sea levels.

Among the voices heard are an Icelandic writer, a Greenlandic fisherman, a drama therapist for whom an ice cube provides a telling metaphor and an ice-climbing fiddle-playing mountain rescuer from the Cairngorms. Their words are interwoven with spectacular recordings of the Greenland ice sheet as it calves and destroys and a specially composed musical soundscape to reveal the dichotomy and emotional resonance of the thaw.

Martin Jarvis

Michael Berkeley's guest this week is the actor Martin Jarvis, who made his first TV appearance in 1965 as a giant butterfly in 'Doctor Who', and went on two years later to achieve worldwide fame as Jon Forsyte in the BBC's landmark adaptation of Galsworthy's 'The Forsyte Saga'. Since then he has appeared in other period dramas, including the title role in the BBC's 1968 serialisation of 'Nicholas Nickleby', and Uriah Heep in the 1974 BBC version of 'David Copperfield', as well as making guest appearances in a range of TV programmes from 'Doctor Who' to 'Inspector Morse', 'Murder She Wrote', 'The Bill' and 'EastEnders'. He is particularly well known for his many radio dramas, readings and audio books, both comic and serious, and has acted in many stage productions in London and abroad.

His personal musical passions begin with the radiant end of Stravinsky's 'Firebird', and continue with Schubert's 'Die Forelle', sung by Janet Baker, followed by Andras Schiff and members of the Hagen Quartet playing the fourth movement of the 'Trout' Quintet, which Schubert based on the melody of his own song. Next comes the famous Toreador Song from Act II of Bizet's 'Carmen', and the slow movement of Mozart's last piano concerto, beautifully played by Clifford Curzon with the English Chamber Orchestra under Benjamin Britten. A light interlude follows with 'Painting the Clouds with Sunshine' by Ambrose and his Orchestra, before we hear Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in part of the finale of Beethoven's Symphony No.7 in A. Finally. Martin Jarvis has chosen Lucy Parham playing Liszt's piano arrangement of Schumann's song 'Widmung', one of a set written for his wife Clara on their marriage in 1840.

The Caccini Sisters

Giulio Caccini was one of the most successful composers and highly renowned singers of his age. But lesser known are his two daughters, Francesca and Settimia Caccini. Both women were highly accomplished singers in their own right, and composers as well, and they both rose to become the highest paid members of their respective courts. Francesca also holds another claim to fame, as the first ever female composer of an opera, and she has been lauded as the most important female composer between the 11th Century Hildegard of Bingen and the 19th Century. Lucie Skeaping investigates the lives of these two extraordinary women.

The programme also includes extracts from the original version of the work from 1915.

Tonight's concert ranges from Mussorgsky's vision of a witches' sabbath (with a bit of help from his friend Rimsky) through Scriabin's dreams, to powerhouse works by the two central Russian composers of the twentieth century. Prokofiev's hard-hitting Third Symphony uses music from his opera The Fiery Angel, while Shostakovich was writing his First Violin Concerto at the very time that the Soviet authorities announced their clampdown on music that didn't conform. Julia Fischer is the soloist, returning to the Proms after her triumphant debut with the Brahms Concerto two years ago.

Proms Literary Festival - Tolstoy

Susan Hitch joins an audience at the Royal College of Music to mark one hundred years since the death of
Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina - a writer whose works regularly appear in the top ten of the greatest novels of all time.

Susan's guests on stage are James Meek, former Moscow correspondent and prize-winning author of "The People's Act of Love" set in turn of the century Russia, and Anthony Briggs, translator of a recent edition of War and Peace and a biographer of Tolstoy.

We know Tolstoy is a great writer - but what about the man himself? James Meek and Anthony Briggs debate his personal influence. Why did he become such an international philosphical celebrity - with hordes of reporters despatched to his deathbed, logging Tolstoy's last hours and morsels consumed in minute detail? Do we need to remember him more as a spiritual teacher who counted Ghandhi amongst his followers, rather than a novelist? And do James and Anthony believe his books give signs of an author who embraced the diversity of human experience - or reveal what he believed to be his misanthropy and pessimism?

Part of a series of debates at this year's Proms Literary Festival celebrating the three Russian authors whose anniversaries fall this year: Chekhov, Pasternak and Tolstoy himself.

Producer: Natalie Steed.

The White Devil

By John Webster

First performed in 1612, John Webster's revenge play is here set in a 1950s underworld of shifting alliances and sudden violence.
Adapted and directed by Marc Beeby

The wealthy Brachiano conceives a violent passion for the married Vittoria Corombona. Her brother Flamineo, Brachiano's secretary, plots to bring his sister and his master together, in the hope of advancing his own career. Their plans are impeded by the return to Rome of Isabella - Brachiano's wife, and sister to the powerful Francisco. Desperate for Vittoria, Brachiano arranges to have both Isabella and Vittoria's husband murdered. And in so doing makes an implacable enemy of the deadly Francisco...
The play was first performed in 1612, but this production sets the action in a murky underworld of the 1950s - a world that seeks to hide its shifting alliances, betrayals and sudden violence beneath a veneer of honour and respectability.

First broadcast in August 2010.

MON 12:00 Composer of the Week (b00t73t9)
Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Episode 1

Forget Samuel Sebastian Wesley as a pillar of the Anglican Cathedral world. He was an eccentric, inconsistent and irascible character, who frequently abandoned his Sunday duties of conducting the choir or playing the organ, to visit the nearest river for fishing. His life is one of regret, having left the world of musical opportunities in London at an early age, to be from that point considered a composer of Church music. His career spans many Churches and Cathedrals, most of which he resigned from under circumstances relating to his neglect of duties, and his outspoken views concerning the clergy's power over music.

Wesley is largely forgotten today, but during his time he was rated highly by the likes of Gounod, Parry and Elgar, and he even got to perform duets with Rossini - his father was also a celebrated composer. Other relatives of note include his great uncle John Wesley - the preacher, and his grandfather Charles - the hymn writer. However, S. S. Wesley was illegitimate, and he and his siblings were largely shunned by their extended family.

Donald Macleod marks the bicentenary of Wesley's birth, surveying the life and music of this bad tempered composer. His career took him from London to Hereford, then on to Exeter and Leeds, moving on again to Winchester and then Gloucester. However, Wesley for most of his life wished to return to Devon where he'd been happiest in that rural landscape, fishing in the local streams and rivers. He eventually got his wish upon his deathbed, being returned to Exeter to be buried next to his baby daughter.

Throughout the week there will be a number of special recordings made for the series, including performances by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Singers, and former New Generation artist, the pianist Tom Poster.

In the first of this week's exploration of Wesley's life and music, Donald Macleod looks at the composer's childhood and early career, including rare works such as his piano Waltz, the Benedictus for voices and piano, and the orchestral Overture in E.

Thomas Dausgaard conducts his Danish orchestra and choirs in an expansive, almost cosmic, programme. Three short choral pieces by György Ligeti - including Lux aeterna, heard in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey - take us to ethereal heights, while Ligeti himself recognised the mesmeric, free-floating character of Rued Langgaard's 1918 Music of the Spheres as prefiguring his own style. Plus Tchaikovsky's captivating concerto and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, overwhelming in its nobly expansive final-movement 'Swan Hymn' climax. Presented by Andrew McGregor

Scriabin, Stravinsky - Part 1

BBC Proms 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Andrew McGregor

Valery Gergiev and the LSO perform the scintillating ballet score that Stravinsky wrote one hundred years ago for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Based on the Russian folk tale of the exotic Firebird imprisoned by the evil magician Kashchey, the work made him famous overnight. Scriabin too was nothing if not ambitious: he began his symphonic output with a massive work in six movements, complete with a choral finale in praise of art and including two solo vocal roles, taken tonight by members of Gergiev's Mariinsky Theatre.

Proms Literary Festival - Pasternak

Susan Hitch explores the life and work of Boris Pasternak, Nobel Prize-winning poet and author, who died 50 years ago. Her guests on stage at the Proms Literary Festival are Jonathan Myerson, who dramatized Dr Zhivago for the BBC, and Professor of Russian Donald Rayfield.

Pasternak is most famous in the UK for his sprawling epic novel Dr Zhivago which sets the concerns, desires and stories of individuals in the vast landscape of Russian revolutionary politics and history. Susan and guests discuss the circumstances of the book's publication: it was smuggled out of Russia during the height of the Cold War, and the subsequent film adaptation by David Lean made Pasternak a global literary hero. But does that tell the real story of Pasternak? Jonathan Myerson and Donald Rayfield explore the misunderstood complexity of the novel, and the fact that the compromises Pasternak adopted in his life mean he's no straightforward Cold War darling of the West.

Recorded in front of an audience, with readings performed by Adjoa Andoh, at the Royal College of Music just before BBC Prom 41 which has a Russian flavour with music from Scriabin and Stravinsky and is conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Joyce DiDonato

Norman Lebrecht meets the acclaimed American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. The sixth child of an Irish Catholic family in Prairie Village, Kansas, she married young and was almost thirty before anyone was prepared to back her talent. In the decade since then, she has taken on mezzo roles in Rossini and Handel with a wide-eyed zest that audiences find irresistible, and an openness that appears to be innate. The very model of a 21st-century communicator, Joyce DiDonato writes a chatty blog and decorates it with photographs that she snaps wherever she goes. She tells Norman Lebrecht about her early life in Kansas, her studies in Philadelphia and Houston, and how she bounced back from a string of rejections to become one of the world's great operatic stars.

Strange Encounters - Series 2

Matthew Cobb

Strange Encounters - scientists revisit mould-breaking experiments in history. Today, biologist Matthew Cobb on the quest for spontaneously generated life. In the sweltering heat of a 17th century Tuscan villa, surrounded by jars of putrefying meat, Francesco Redi doubts the idea, handed down from Aristotle, and accepted unquestioningly by his contemporaries, that insects and reptiles emerge without parents from dead flesh. The painstaking experiments not only established the notion of testing theories by exhaustive experimentation, but also laid the foundations of modern ideas of continuous heredity in all life.

Producer: Roland Pease.

MON 23:15 Jazz on 3 (b00t74vw)
Tomasz Stanko, Martial Solal

Jez Nelson presents a second chance to hear a performance by Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko's Quintet and a solo set from French pianist Martial Solal.

Known for his explorative forays into everything from folk to free jazz, here Stanko presents his new quintet, recorded at the 2009 London Jazz Festival. Expect a subtly different sound world, with bold drum rhythms and electric bass alongside Stanko's haunting and mysterious trumpet tones. After 40 years on the experimental jazz scene, his music is as compelling and creative as ever.

Martial Solal, recorded as part of the 2009 Paris Jazz Week at London's King's Place, plays jazz standards in anything but a standard way, playfully manipulating the jazz repertoire with countermelodies, rhythmic juxtapositions and poised abstraction. The concert is drawn together with a narrative quality, and demonstrating Solal's encyclopaedic knowledge and a ceaseless ability to reinvent.

Presenter: Jez Nelson
Producers: Kathryn Willgress & Rebecca Aitchison.

Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Episode 2

Forget Samuel Sebastian Wesley as a pillar of the Anglican Cathedral world - he was an eccentric, inconsistent and irascible character - Donald Macleod marks the bicentenary of Wesley's birth, surveying the composer's life and music.

Wesley was very unhappy at Hereford Cathedral, and sought a new position elsewhere. He eventually moved to Exeter Cathedral, but not before he married the sister of the Dean of Hereford. Once at Exeter, Wesley soon was involved in local organisations such as the Glee Club, and the Devon Madrigal Society.

In today's episode, Donald Macleod introduces a glee, I wish to tune my quiv'ring lyre, which won Wesley a prize from the Manchester Glee Club. Also the anthem Let us lift up our heart, which Wesley composed when he wasn't too busy out fishing, and neglecting his Cathedral duties.

TUE 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b00t752y)
West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2010

Schubert, Moeran

Sean Rafferty introduces this week of Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts recorded at the 2010 West Cork Chamber Music Festival in the glorious surrounds of Bantry House and St Brendan's Church in Bantry on the south west tip of Ireland. Today the festival's guest performers come together to perform Schubert's Piano Quintet in A major, The Trout - commissioned at a time when Schubert was on a walking tour of Upper Austria, you can almost smell the Alpine air in the music!. Sylvester Paumgarten, a wealthy cellist, arts patron and mine owner, was the commissioner. He was particularly fond of the Schubert's song Die Forelle (Trout) and this is quite possibly the reason why Schubert used the song as the theme for the 4th movement set of variations. More songs feature in Moeran's Fantasy Quartet. The score bears the name of the Norfolk village, Rockland St Mary and perhaps these surroundings inspired Moeran to feature two Norfolk folk songs in this one movement work from 1946.

Schubert Piano Quintet in A major D.667 'Trout'

Kirill Gerstein [piano], Nicola Benedetti [violin], Hartmut Rohde [viola], Leonard Elschenbroich [cello], Dominic Dudley [double bass]

Moeran Fantasy Quartet
Nicholas Daniel [oboe], Cappa Ensemble: Bartosz Woroch [violin]; Adam Newman [viola]; Brian O'Kane [cello]

Background:

In the height of summer the West Cork town of Bantry becomes one of the most important Festival destinations in Ireland with the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, West Cork Literary Festival and the Masters of Tradition Festival.

The historic town comes alive for nine days in late June and early July for the West Cork Chamber Music Festival with world-class chamber music from morning to night in the intimate library of historic Bantry House and the town's two beautiful churches, St Brendan's and St Finbarr's.

A String to Your Bow

Join Andrew McGregor as we step inside the bow maker's workshop, following the master craftsman who needs to be engineer, woodcarver and silversmith. We reveal how precision and technical skill are only the foundation of the art and examine the modern day issues facing bow makers - such as how Pernambuco, a rare Brazilian hardwood which has been used in the making of string bows for over 250 years, has been driven to the point of extinction. With insights from violinists Rachel Podger and Daniel Hope we discover the difference a good bow can make and how the bow continues to evolve today.

Prom 43 - Part: St John Passion

BBC Proms 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Martin Handley

The thoughtful, dignified, spacious music of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt has become one of the most distinctive sounds in contemporary music, and this evening's Late Night Prom presents a performance of a choral work which summarises his unassuming and deceptively simple style - a setting of the Christian Passion narrative from the Gospel according to St John.

Arvo Pärt : St John Passion

Andrew Kennedy (tenor - Pilate)
Brindley Sherratt (baritone - Jesus)
Iain Farrington (organ)
Endymion
BBC Singers
David Hill (conductor)

Extra notes:

Pärt's St John Passion is not a work in which the harrowing events of Christ's arrest, trial, crucifixion and death are used as the vehicle for large-scale, overly dramatic musical gestures. Rather, the piece makes its impact through quiet understatement and ritualised intensity - the music only occasionally raising its voice. In our noisy, over-emotionalised, hyper-sensitive contemporary world Pärt's piece takes us to a place of deep contemplation and solemn ceremony - sounding both fresh and modern, and - at the same time - as if it springs from some great well of primeval music. An unforgettable late-night listen, which will turn the great spaces of the Albert Hall into something like an ancient Romanesque basilica...

Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Episode 3

Forget Samuel Sebastian Wesley as a pillar of the Anglican Cathedral world - he was an eccentric, inconsistent and irascible character - Donald Macleod marks the bicentenary of Wesley's birth, surveying the composer's life and music.

Wesley's relationship with the Dean and Chapter at Exeter Cathedral turned very sour. He was invited to Leeds to give the opening recital on their new organ, and soon accepted the post of organist there. During his time at Leeds, Wesley was in demand as an organist all over the country, but he also started to put into print his views of the Clergy's control over music.

In today's episode Donald Macleod traces Wesley's move from rural Devon to the industrialised north - a move the composer regretted for the rest of his life. Also there is the Magnificat from Wesley's service in E, which he published accompanied by an introduction in which he publically criticised Cathedrals for their inadequate choirs and organs.

WED 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b00t7576)
West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2010

Poulenc, Mozart

Sean Rafferty introduces the second Lunchtime concert from the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry. Seminal works for oboe and clarinet feature on today's programme. During the last years of his life, Poulenc worked on a projected series of sonatas, one for each wind instrument. He completed only three: flute, clarinet and oboe. All are dedicated to the memory of friends or musicians and the Oboe Sonata is inscribed 'à la mémoire de Serge Prokofieff'. Poulenc reflects his friend's music in the brilliant writing in the scherzo. The distinguished British oboist, Nicholas Daniel is joined by pianist, Katya Apekisheva in this performance recorded in St Brendan's Church in Bantry. Mozart composed his Quintet K. 581 for his friend, the outstanding clarinettist Anton Stadler, a member of the court orchestra in Vienna, and the inventor of the Bassett Clarinet, an instrument which extended the clarinet lower pitch range by a major 3rd. In this recording from the 2010 West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Chen Halevi plays the bassett clarinet and is joined by the Chiaroscuro Quartet.

Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810-1876)

Episode 4

Forget Samuel Sebastian Wesley as a pillar of the Anglican Cathedral world - he was an eccentric, inconsistent and irascible character - Donald Macleod marks the bicentenary of Wesley's birth, surveying the composer's life and music.

Although the city of Leeds was sad to see Wesley leave, he had again fallen out with the clergy over his outspoken views, and absenteeism. Wesley now took a new post at Winchester Cathedral, and for a period, worked harmoniously with the Precentor there - that is until a new Precentor arrived introducing his own music into the services.

In today's programme Donald Macleod charts Wesley's move from Leeds to Winchester, including a new enterprise for the composer into the realm of hymnody, and his most famous hymn tune - Aurelia. Also, the BBC Singers perform an anthem not heard since 1854 - By the word of the Lord.

THU 13:00 Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert (b00t75k8)
West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2010

Haydn, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Beethoven

Sean Rafferty introduces the penultimate BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert from the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry, a town with stunning views over Bantry Bay in the south west of Ireland. Today's programme features music by Haydn and Beethoven as well as a virtuoso showpiece for violin. The 26 year old Beethoven almost certainly used Mozart's Quintet for the same instruments, K. 452 as the template for his Quintet for Piano and Winds Op.16. It's Rossini's Figaro from 'The Barber of Seville', who receives the virtuoso treatment in the hands he Israeli violinst, Vadim Gluzman in Castelnuovo-Tedsco's violin showpiece. And the programme begins with Haydn's Quartet in B flat, Op 76 No. 3, Sunrise, so called because of the soaring violin melody which opens the work. The quartet is from his Haydn's last complete set of quartets, Op.76, known as the Erdödy Quartets after Count Erdödy who commissioned them in 1796. The title, Sunrise, is reflected in the soaring violin melody which opens the work.

Another chance to hear the grand finale to Proms Bach Day. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andrew Litton play works by J S Bach in arrangements made in the last hundred years or so, ranging from the subtleties of Walton's "Wise Virgins" Suite and the playfulness of Grainger's version of "Sheep may safely graze", to the richly-scored reworkings by Stokowski, Henry Wood, Sargent, Bantock and Respighi. Plus two special commissions from young composers who have taken Bach pieces as a springboard for their compositions. Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch.

THU 20:45 Twenty Minutes (b00t808h)
Tibet on the Banks of the Clyde

George Bogle - Britain's first emissary to Tibet in 1774 - struck up a remarkable friendship with the country's then spiritual leader, the Panchen Lama. He was there to try to establish trade relations with China, to help his lucrative career in the East India Company, but he also had the time of his short life, falling in love with Tibet, and Tibetans. After his death in 1781, two little girls he'd fathered by an unknown mother were sent back to his family at Daldowie near Glasgow. The family story was that they were his daughters by a high ranking Tibetan lady called Tichan. The name looked genuine and the tradition also surfaced in other families close to the Bogles. The great Tibetan scholar Hugh Richardson was convinced. But was this story true? A generation of Tibet scholars have pored over the 'judiciously arranged' (and probably censored) family records, trying to find clues to their origins. Alas the beautiful story is crumbling, but in doing so is giving us an insight into something even more important and poignant, the fate of mixed race children being sent 'home' from India to Scotland. Even with hefty dowries in landed families, they could not marry into the same class. They could have problems making a life in Scotland - emigration back out into the Empire was often their best prospect. They would be wrenched from their Indian family forever, with no thought for the grief of a mother parted from her child. Despite all this, the Tibetan wife story was perhaps a father's last gift to his daughters, hoping to make them more acceptable to his strict Presbyterian family back home in Scotland. Glasgow novelist, Louise Welsh, investigates one of the more complex and unexpected legacies of the city's imperial past.

Episode 5

Forget Samuel Sebastian Wesley as a pillar of the Anglican Cathedral world - he was an eccentric, inconsistent and irascible character - Donald Macleod marks the bicentenary of Wesley's birth, surveying the composer's life and music.

One final move for Wesley from Winchester Cathedral to Gloucester, where in the final years of his life, he was little concerned with his contractual duties. His acceptance of the post at Gloucester caused quite a shock - one Canon noted, "it was as if the Archbishop of Canterbury had applied for a minor Canonry." Wesley finally got his wished-for return to Devon though, when he was buried at Exeter next to the grave of his daughter. For one who gave so much music to the Anglican Church, his funeral was conducted in silence with no music at all.

In this final episode, Donald Macleod charts Wesley's final years, including a work commissioned by Charles Gounod - The Praise of Music - and Wesley's most famous anthem - Ascribe unto the Lord - which the composer orchestrated later in life.

West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2010

Beethoven, Schumann

Sean Rafferty concludes this series of Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert from the 2010 West Cork Chamber Music Festival with works by Beethoven and Robert Schumann. Husband and wife duo, Vadim Gluzman and Angela Yoffe, perform the fifth of Beethoven's ten violin sonatas, Op. 24, Spring. The title, Spring, isn't credited to Beethoven but it does reflect the immediacy and freshness of the music which is entirely appropriate to the beautiful surroundings of Bantry, the coastal town where the festival takes place each year. The series concludes with a performance given by a dynamic young trio led by Scottish violinist, Nicola Benedetti - Robert Schumann's Piano Trio No. 3, Op. 110, is a work which his wife, Clara, wrote about after its first rehearsal in 1851, 'It is original and increasingly passionate, especially the scherzo, which carries one along with it into the wildest depths'.

Who better to conduct an all-Russian programme at the BBC Proms than Vladimir Jurowski, the dynamic Russian Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Presented by Martin Handley.

Mosolov, Part, Ravel, Scriabin - Part 1

BBC Proms 2010

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Sara Mohr-Pietsch

Esa-Pekka Salonen has been Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra for less than two years, but his distinctive programming and conducting has already made its mark on London's concert life, and their BBC Prom together epitomises their relationship. It starts with a bang - Alexander Mosolov's futuristic aural picture of industrial 1920s Soviet Russia - and continues with a UK premiere from Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, bringing to a climax the BBC Proms celebrations of his 75th birthday. Two early twentieth-century classics complete the programme: Ravel's remarkable piano concerto for the left hand only, and a sensual ochestral showpiece from Scriabin.

FRI 19:45 Twenty Minutes (b00t8096)
He Played It Left-Hand

After losing his right hand in the First World War the pianist Paul Wittgenstein commissioned several composers to write pieces specifically for the left hand, including Ravel, whose Concerto for the Left Hand is performed in tonight's Prom concert. But why, as 10% of the population is left-handed, should it take such a loss for composers to consider doing this? Why (especially as the incidence of left-handedness is even higher among musicians) are musical instruments designed by right-handers, for right-handers?

The novelist Louise Doughty is left-handed and she feels this has had considerable bearing on her becoming a writer. There is a preconception that left-handers are more creative than most of the population, more likely to develop as artists. Louise enquires into the truth of this, talking to Chris McManus, Professor of Psychology and Medical Education at University College London and an expert on left-handedness and asymmetry.

She meets the pianist Chris Steed, who commissioned a left-handed piano, and tries the instrument herself. She considers how left-handedness is not merely mechanical but an approach to the world - a world which pays scant regard to left-handers. Popular opinion even discriminates against left-handness, it being historically associated with evil, and depicted as such in art. Why should Christ sit 'on the right hand of the Father'?

David Bowie's guitarist alter ego Ziggy Stardust 'played it left hand' and this marked him out as special. And Louise hears from the late Robert Sandall about how the great originality of Jimi Hendrix as an electric guitarist was due to his being left-handed.

Producer: Julian May.

Lopa Kothari

Lopa Kothari presents sounds from around the world, including Nigerian-German soul with a session by Nneka. Born to a Nigerian father and German mother, she was educated in both countries and qualified as an anthropologist. She's had mainstream chart success but doesn't shy away from difficult subjects such as colonialism in Africa, corruption and religion.

Since 2003 Nneka has been working closely with the hip hop beatmaker DJ Farhot, a producer living in Hamburg. As a young singer she first gained public attention in 2004 while performing as an opening act for dancehall reggae star Sean Paul at Hamburg Stadtpark.
She finished recording her first album in the autumn of 2005. Entitled 'Victim of Truth', it was released not only in Germany but also in England, France, Netherlands, Nigeria and Japan. The UK's Sunday Times later declared it "the year's most criminally overlooked album".
Following the release of the album, Nneka enjoyed a sustained and successful period of touring, performing at festivals such as Chiemsee Reggae Summer, Haarlem (BevrijdingsPop), Den Haag (Park Pop) and Saint-Brieuc (Art Rock Festival) as well as in respected venues like La Maroquinerie and New Morning in Paris, Tivoli in Utrecht, Paradiso in Amsterdam and Cargo and ULU in London. She has also supported artists such as Femi Kuti, Bilal, Seeed, and Gnarls Barkley.
In February 2008 she released her second album, 'No Longer at Ease'. The lead single from it, 'Heartbeat', became her first song to break into the German Top 50. In September 2009, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number twenty.
She also supported Lenny Kravitz on his French tour in 2009.
She recorded a song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa called "Viva Africa".
